LUN masking and mapping in Nexus 5548up OS 5.1(3)N2(1)

Hi,
I just like to know how we can do Boot LUN Masking for ESXi Host in nexus 5548 ,  that only use by specific host and other host cannot see it.

If you are looking for MDS like LUN zoning, Nexus 5000 does not support it. You will need to configure LUN masking on your storage array

    Hi all,
    If my storage array presents a number of LUNs/LDEVs down two physical fibre cables which are outputs from the primary and secondary controllers, and those two cables are ports on the MDS switches, do you need to know the LUN number as it was created on the array?
    I read the Fabric Manager Configuration Guide and it talks about LUN masking at the array. It says to check the Check LUN box. I have not tried this so I was wondering if the LUNs on the array will appear for me to select. If there are say 8 LUNs presented (4 primary and 4 secondary), are they visible when using this option?
    I have a fair sized number of new blades with HBA's with dual ports that need to connect to a large HP array. The setup will be one path goes from a 9216 to a 9509 via port channels (and another path through a similiar setup) to the HP array which will be presenting LUNs through LUN masking to the individual WWN's of the blade HBAs ports. There will be literally hundreds of LUNS coming out of the array so if they are presented in Fabric Manager, it would make my life easier especially when the array is looked after by HP and they might not be around when I start configuring the SAN.
    Thats the joy of outsourcing.

    Finding out what LUNs are available is done via SCSI commands INQUIRY and REPORT_LUNS. In general, having the MDS discover the luns is not done since the MDS does not need to know. The end devices that are zoned and configured in the array's LUN security will need to know and they will use the two above frames to find this info out. The check luns checkbox that you reference is when doing LUN zoning (which is part of Enterprise license). In fact, the manner in which we are able to zone based upon a LUN is by trapping and manipulating the REPORT_LUNS frame. A generic implementation is to simply zone an initiator and a target via their PWWN's. Then, in the array, there is a security mechanism that allows the PWWN of a device to access a particular LUN. That LUN is then associated with a particular volume of disk space. However, we offer the capability to zone with the granularity of the LUN/PWWN combination if you so desire it.

  • RAID, clients, switch and LUN masking

    Hello,
    To cut to the chase of it, I'm not sure if my LUN masking is set correctly.
    I have a RAID unit with 4 slices. In RAID admin I have set the LUN mapping and masking according to the instructions in the RAID admin guide.
    I also have 4 xserves ( all 10.4.6 ) - each is assigned ( mapped to and masked from ) its respective slice of the RAID through an emulex 355. The emulex utilizes a configuration file specified by emulex corporation for this specific apple/raid configuration.
    User home directories reside on the RAID slices.
    PROBLEM: When I log in a user on a desktop client ( 10.4.6 ) I can see the shared homedirectories on the other slices of the RAID via private/Network/Servers. This makes me nervous.
    Note that the xserves DO NOT mount the other RAID slices.
    Am I worrying over nothing or did I miss something in my setup? I'll be glad to post further details if requested.

    and, to clear up a statement in the orginal post, xserves are mapped TO thier respective RAID slice and masked FROM the other slices.

  • Cisco Nexus 5548UP and FI6248UP compatibility with FC SFP

    Cisco Nexus 5548UP and FI 6248UP comes with Unified Ports. What are the SFP types this port can take? 1Gig, 10Gig and 2/4/8FC. Could you please clarify?

  • Nexus 5548UP - HSRP and vPC, tracking required?

    Hi,
    We've got two Nexus 5548UPs that are vPC and HSRP peers.
    I've had some feedback that I should incorporate the tracking function to close the vPC down in the case of a layer 3 problem, the thing is I'm not sure it's required. I can see in this article it recommends implementing tracking when your L2 peer-link and L3 interfaces are on the same module (which it is in my case).. http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/switches/datacenter/sw/design/vpc_design/vpc_best_practices_design_guide.pdf

    there is two tracking can be use din nexus enviroment
    HSRP tracking and vPC tracking
    for using one line card for the vPC peer link vPC tracking is recomnded
    HSRP tracking is used to track L3 uplinks to the core
    Using vPC with HSRP/VRRP object tracking may leads to traffic blackholing in case object tracking is triggered
    its better to use separate L3 inter switch link instead of using HSRP tracking

  • 3750 and Nexus 5548UP Support

    I am working on a project that was handed down and several different engineers got their hands on.  The project is (or should have been) a simple data storage/center.  Fixing all the design problems has left me with very little time to research the security folks issues and I need help.
    We are using Cisco Nexus 5548UP for our data center core and distribution/routing to encryptors connecting our remote sites which use Cisco 3750X series switches.  The Nexus is running NOS 5.2(1)N1(4) and the 3750s use 12.2(55) IP base.
    These are our particular issues:
    1)  For management and monitoring, what would be a good product to use to support this?  If Cisco Prime Infrastructure, what ports would need to be allowed/opened through firewalls/ACLs (SNMP, syslog, etc)?
    2)  For switch login, the network security folks are reluctant to use TACACS and want to push for LDAP instead.  Using Active Directory, is there any way to get the Cisco Nexus 5548UP and Cisco 3750Xs talking to Active Directory?  I've found both 'yes' and 'no' answers online and am not sure.  Do I need to use a different NOS and/or IOS?  Are there specific directions somewhere?  Or is it not possible?
    3)  Without TACACS, is there any way to implement command logging to a syslog server on the Nexus?  On the 3750s, I make the following changes and all commands are relayed to our syslog server:
    Enable
    Configure terminal
    Archive
    Log config
    Logging enable
    Logging size 500
    Hidekeys
    Notify syslog
    End
    Is there anything similar for the Nexus?
    4)  In conjunction with #3, we need to be able to log each login attempt (success and failure) to a syslog server on the Nexus.  On the 3750, using the "login on-[failure/success] log", it is can setup easy enough.  On the Nexus, I haven't been able to find anything similar.  I can't find any instructions on setting this up on the Nexus, though.
    5)  What IOS/NOS do we need to use to be able to lock out users after 3 failed logins (again, without using TACACS)?

    The LRM is s special case transceiver which supports 10 Gbps over older FDDI grade multimode fiber when used with a mode conditioning patch cord. It is not supported on the Nexus 5548UP.
    The SFP-10G-LR is used with single mode fiber for spans up to 10 km in length. It is supported on the 5548UP (and most every platform of Cisco's that takes SFPs).

    I am trying to setup LACP on the Nexus 5548UP 10 Gig switch on Port-channel 3. However, when I setup LACP, eth ports 7 and 8 (on Port-channel 3) go into either inactive or down state (as below). The 10 gig ports (7 and 8) are connected to a server which has LACP capability.

  • C-200 M2 with P81E to Nexus 5548UP

    Hi all,
    I'm working on a project which is about to set up a Cisco UCS Lab.
    Actually the topology looks simple and easy but there must be some missconfiguration on my side because i can't see any of IDs (P81E's wwpn and mac address info) from the Nexus 5548UP.
    I connected my 5548UP to MDS 9124 for providing the FCoE traffic to the C-200 Farm.
    Then i configured the MDS with NPIV and converted couple of ethernet ports to the FC ports on 5548UP (which i'm using to connect to the MDS)
    Finally i connected my C-200M2's VIC to the 5548UP but i couldn't see any information about server. The ports actually are up. But can't see nothing.
    Some help and advises will be appreciated.

    Right now i connected the N5548 directly to the storage for that reason you can not see the fc uplink connections on running-configuration.
    On Nexus 5548 ;
         Ethernet 1/1 and Ethernet 1/2 are the server ports (P81E)
         Ethernet 1/15 is the Uplink Ethernet port
         Fc 1/31 1/32 is the Storage Ports
         Storage has been configured for the wwpns and LUNs.

  • Nexus 5548UP for SAN Switch

    We have purchased a Nexus 5548UP switch for our SAN environment.  I've only configured it for jumbo frames and currently doing testing on the performance, as some say use jumbo frames while others say do not.  My question is, and I know this is a loaded question but how do you guys go about configuring your SAN switches?  What exactly are you configuring on it?  Such as for performance tuning or the like.  The reason I ask, is we have the switch and it's pretty much working, but I'd like to learn more about it and how to tune it and fully take advantage of the switch.

    That is correct, between two Dell Optiplex workstations.  We also tested between the server that will go into prod and an Optiplex, but once again the Optiplex could be the limiting factor.  You think that  could be it?  Here's my config, so you know how it's setup right now.

  • Nexus 5548UP with 1Gb ether to 10Gb ether on same switch

    I have a Nexus 5548UP switch with a couple of systems some of which have been configured with 1Gb nic's running various OS's and other that have 10Gb nic's.  When I try to SSH from 1Gb box to a 1Gb box everything is fine, when I SSH from 1Gb to 10Gb box it does not work but 10Gb to 10Gb boxes will work.  The switch is a fresh install and has one VLAN 51 the first 2 ports are setup with LACP and the only differences is speed of 1000 and 10000 for the boxes attached.  Is there some trick or additional configuration that is needed to make 1Gb to 10Gb work for SSH and other applications?  I trying to setup some test boxes now to have a repeatable environment and will update when completed.

    I have a laptop connected to a port on the switch and I am currently adding a SUSE 11 SP2 to another port that has a 10G card for a NIC.  Once I finished the install I will post more specific tests using ping and SSH to illustrate.

  • Nexus 5548UP/2232PP/FCoE

    Hi,
    In my enviroment I have a datacenter with 2 Nexus 5548UP with FCoE Licence. As I am new to storage networking I need some information about the configuration of FCoE.
    The enviroment is :
    2 x 5548UP Switch
    2 x 2232PP FEX
    1 x Host with Emulex OneConnect OCe10102-F interface
    1 x storage with FCoE interface.
    How many virtual SANs we can create with a single stoarge device.
    I have to configure this 2 5548UP Vs the 2 FEX 2232PP with FCoE.
    1) I have to map each vsan with a Layer 2 FCoE Vlan?
    2) How I can distribute the VSans (and the FcoE Vlans) and the Ethernet Vlans from the 2 FEX 2232PP Vs the 2 5548UP? How many Links? Is better to do a Port-Channel or different Port-Channels? Best Practices?
    3) In which way we need to configure the Teaming? Active Standby or Active Active?
    4) I studied that, it is possibile to do an ISL Trunk between the two Nexus 5548UP switches...right? Can I Create a port-channel and allow all the vsans?
    Kindly guide me with proper connection diagram and configuration steps.

    Assuming FEXes are already connected and operational. Nexus 5548 cannot run in NPV mode. You have to configure zoning in addition to following configuration.

  • Trying to Disable LUN Masking under 1.5.1

    Hi,
    I have an Apple XServe Raid with 7x750Gb drives. The array is configured with three slices which would mean three LUNs. Even though Lun Masking is no longer an option in 1.5.1 it still shows up as enabled on the XServe Raid. Non of the luns are visible to the connected host. There is no switch involved.
    How can I disable Lun Masking under 1.5.1?

    Do you have a copy of the the Admin Tool version 1.5? LUN Masking was present in that version of the tool and think you should be able to turn it off and the resume using the current version.

  • Lun Masking

    I have an xserve raid (firmware 1.5.1/1.5.1.c) configured with 3 slices and Lun Masking which 3 xserves connect to. They are all attached to a qlogic fc switch.
    Recently the company bought 2 more servers to support another area and they need them to mount 2 of the slices. I added the WWN to the corresponding zoneset in the switch, and added the WWN to the lun masking configuration (using raid admin 1.5) and i got the volumes mounted in the new servers.
    The next day i recieve a phone call asking me to switch the volumes from the servers, slice 2 to server 4 and slice 1 to server 5. After making the appropiate changes in server admin and rebooting the servers the volumes in both servers would not mount. In Disk Utility i can see the volume and the corresponding raid slices, however Disk Utility tells me they are degraded and that i should run first aid on the disk. The first aid does nothing to get the volume mounted on the servers.
    If i put the lun masking settings back (slice 1 to server 4) it mounts without a problem. Is there a cache on the lun masking settings? Is it the firmware version? a downgrade and upgrade perhaps?
    If anyone has encountered something similar, any help would be appreciated.

    I did reboot the hosts. At least the 2 i'm trying to get the volume to mount. The other 3 server that also use that raid, i can't reboot them, at least not during the daytime, since they are in production.

  • Partial collection Failure for nexus 5548UP in PI 2.1

    I get "Partial Collection Failure" in the inventory collection status in Prime Infrastructure for all my Nexus 5548UP (8 devices).
    i have seen in the PI 2.1 release notes that a bug CSCum16230  which look like my problem has been resolved in PI 2.1 but i continue getting the "partail collection failure"
    Would like to know if the bug is still exist or get any other help to solve this problem.

    we've got four N5K-C5548UP. Two with a layer 3 daughter card and two without.
    interestingly we see the issue just on those boxes with the l3 daughter cards N55-D160L3-V2 installed...
    Any help or ideas are highly appreciated

  • LMS User Tracking for NEXUS 5548UP

    Dear,
    A while ago I received a ticket from one of our customers because User Tracking was not working for NEXUS 5548UP on LMS 3.2. I opened a TAC case for this but this was normal since it is a Datacenter switch. Now the customer came back on this because they really want to see which server is connected to which switch port. I understood from the TAC engineer this is not on the roadmap to integrate in LMS 4.x. They want to know if there exists another product (they thought about DCNM) and wanted to know how this integrates or works together with LMS...

    My latest understanding of User Tracking and Nexus 5K series is that it is not supported due to a limitation of the MIB support in the NX-OS.
    The current DCNM (release 5.2) is distinct from the LMS and Cisco Prime umbrella but that wil be changing a bit moving forwad as DCNM is enhanced and rolled into the Cisco Prime family. Last I heard there should be some information coming out of Cisco Live this week and a new release will have some additional functionality and better integration. Still, I doubt we'll see UT for the 5K due to the NX-OS limitation.
    One way to do what you're asking apart from use of any of the Cisco products is to enable LLDP on your Nexus and servers. That will at least give you the ability to pull the information from the NX-OS command line ("show lldp neighbor")
