Lustre 2.0 and iSCSI - Active Active Cluster

Hi All,
I am sitting with a project that has me lookig at all kinds of solutions.
Here is the Project Scope:
2 to 4 servers running Linux ( Still to be decided what Version of Linux )
the above said servers must see the same iSCSI Target and space.
iSCSI Device is a Hard Device with 18TB of SAS2 Drvies and 4 1GB Ports Trunked
The reason for this is that we want to run a Linux based Email system, however our load on email is to huge for just one server
Thus we want to load balance the requests to the 2 or 4 Linux servers and they need to see the same Email on the iSCSI device as a user migth retrieve email from server1 yet email could come in to the users maildir on server2.
Question Time:
Can Lustre 2.0 provide me a solution?.
If not
Can someone recommend a solution to me?.
Thanks To everyone on this forum for making it such a great wealth of Knowledge.

The reason for this is that we want to run a Linux based Email system, however our load on email is to huge for just one server
Can someone recommend a solution to me?.Enterprise solutions often include several email gateways to increase availability, security and workload by physically separating internal and external access and implementing different servers for sending and receiving smtp traffic. A Linux cluster for processing incoming and outgoing smtp email is not necessarily the best option to increase processing power and availability. For smtp servers with public or external access, spam and relay protection can be a challenging issue.

• Install SSAS and SQL on an Active-Active Cluster

Hello
I have to install SQL 2014 and SSAS on a 2-node FCI and I'd like to have SQL running on one node and SSAS on the other one so I can accomplish an Active-Active Cluster.
Is there any ste-by-step guide to do this?

Yes, you can have SQL Service running on one node and SSAS running on another node. In the truest sense its never active-active. But if you consider both nodes are active with different services rather than just staying passive then its fine.
Just that you install each of these in two different groups.
Find the step by step tutorial for SQL Service.

• SAP cluster active/active Windows and cluster active/pasive Database

Dear Experts,
I need to know if SAP is restricted to work in an active / active  cluster Windows R2 and database cluster with passive / active. Maybe Oracle database.
Maybe they can give me some information on how to do it or tell me if this combination is NOT possible. Maybe Oracle as database.
Please any information you can give me I thank.

Hi Kumar,
Please gothru the Installation guides under http://service.sap/com/instguides for required SAP DVD's and PAM for compatible DB's.
In Node A --> You start with ASCS + SCS installation as below
1.) Central Services Instance for ABAP (ASCS) -- Consists of Msg. service & Enqueue Service (Shared Disk)
2.) Central Services Instance (SCS) -- Consists of Msg. service & Enqueue Service (Should be installed after installation of 1.) (Same Shared Disk)
3.) First Microsoft Cluster Service (MSCS) -- This step creates the SAP cluster group on the first MSCS node and adds the ASCS and SCS instance(s) to the SAP cluster group
4.) Database Instance
Node B
5.) Additional Microsoft Cluster Service (MSCS)
6.) Enqueue Replication Server BOTH NODES, First in NODE A followed by NODE B
7.) Central Instance NODE A-- If you install the central instance on one of the NODE A, make sure that you use a local drive, not a shared drive.
8.) Dialog Instance NODE B-- Same procedure as in NODE A.
When NODE A fails, the ASCS and SCS failsover to NODE B and Dialog instance on NODE B act as CI.

• How can we achive active/active cluster setup with Oracle

Hi Experts,
How can we achieve active/active database setup with oracle WITHOUT USING RAC.. As far as I know it's impossible (unless I'm wrong)..
We are using Oracle 11.2.0.1 64bit on Windows 2008 server. We deployed Oracle FailSafe but that's more of an active/passive solution based on a windows cluster.
The other solution we were thinking about is to use DataGuard and replication.. two servers.. the oracle instance running on one server generating logs, and the other server receive the logs and apply them to the physical standby db.. Still, this is not a real active/active setup.
So, is it possible to run 2 servers in an active/active cluster and have the oracle database in an active/active setup or have the instance running on multiple nodes (at the same time)?
Thanks

Let me give you a brief explanation of what the situation is and you can be the judge..
My client have four databases with the smallest one being 20GB and the biggest around the 35gb (SGA 750mb to 1.4gb (Tiny by DB standards) and probably on a normal day, you can run all four of them on a decent desktop).. The DBs are used to keep track of people information. Through out the year, the databases are almost sitting idle, and by idle I mean, the odd update here and there, the odd report..etc. No hard real processing of any sort. Two days of the year (end of year) we have all the operators consolidating records and what's not and they will be pounding away entering data and updating the tables - with hourly reports that goes to 3rd parties. The client expects a 99.99 up time and availability during those 2 days.
Now, tell me, How can I justify using RAC and spending hundreds of thousands of dollars in licensing and what ever extra costs introduced by the complexity of the environment for the above scenario knowing that I don't have any real use for RAC for 363 days of the year; and we MIGHT need it for 2 days of the year? This is the dilemma we're facing.
Thanks

• FTP Adapter duplicate processing of files in Active-Active cluster env

Hi All,
We have single active-active cluster environment and we have configured all the HA configurations for Inbound and Outbound operations (except outboundDatasourceLocal). But we faced a situation that the FTP Adapter processed a file twice. This happened when there was a fail-over in oracle database in where SOA-INFRA schema is created.
Please let me know if anyone faced similar issue and what would be the resolution for this duplication issue.
Thanks in Advance.

Hi Vernetto,
Thanks for your reply.
I too had opened a ticket with oracle and they are looking into the issue.
can you please let me know what are the inbound and outbound operation configurations you have specified in the 'outbound connection pools'. Also is there any other specific property you set in jca file?
one more thing is, we have configured outboundLockTypeForWrite to 'oracle' as we are using the oracle database. but i couldnt see any data in FILEADAPTER_IN or in FILEADAPTER_MUTEX tables. you said you could see data in FILEADAPTER_IN table. so is there any specific property requires to be set which i am missing?
please suggest.
Thanks.

• Active - Passive Cluster

Hey, I have to manage an active passive cluster on SLES10 SP4. Oracle 10.2.0.4
All oracle binaries are on a DRBD Device on mountpoint /oradata.
This mountpoint includes the binaries and all datafiles.
I havent installed these systems. At one stage on node died and got reinstalled by a systemadministrator.
After a switch from the running node to the standby node, the cluster is not starting.
Jan 3 14:36:01 a logger: Cluster Ready Services waiting on dependencies. Diagnostics in /tmp/crsctl.6114.
Jan 3 14:36:14 a logger: Waiting for Oracle CSS service to be available before starting
Jan 3 14:36:14 a logger: ASM instance +ASM. Wait 2.
After issung $ORACLE_HOME/bin/localconfig add the cluster is starting, the asm instance is coming up, and also the database instance is starting.
Shortly after that the db instance dies. Alertlog is showing something like recursive sql error.
Looks like writing to the datafiles is not working.
In asmcmd the diskgroups are showing DISMOUNTED (show MOUNTED before)
so what to do ?
a) Why is it necessary to issue "localconfig add" to make the cluster starting ?
b) What could be a reason for not being able to write to the database ?
c) How would you guys install an active/passive cluster ?
c1) Install OS on both nodes
c2) Install oracle binaries
c2.1) on both nodes in the local files system and do the mapping to the drbd afterwards?
c2.2) only on one node and just switch the mountpoint ?
Chris

Hi,
first of all please clarify, if you have Oracle clusterware installed, or just the local configuration for local ASM.
There is a big difference between the 2, and also using DRBD has nothing to do with Oracle clusterware (and is not supported by Oracle).
a.) Localconfig may be necessary for a local ASM installation in 10.2. Main reason is, that the CSS service configuraton includes the hostname (which changed if you switched nodes). Hence may not be able to start ASM. With localconfig you are fixing this issue.
Very important: It is not a good idea to run this is a cluster configuration, since it will break things (a lot of things).
b.) If the ASM diskgroup got dismouned, then the database cannot write. Hence your problem. Why the diskgroup dismounted, you should find in the ASM alert.log
c.) I would go for RAC One Node. Which has this all preconfigured. So it makes life easier. Search for "RAC One Node" on OTN for more information. At least I would take a manual cluster, and do mirroring by ASM, and not DRBD....
c1.) Yes install Oracle cluster (or Grid infrastucture in 11.2) on both nodes. Like a RAC.
c2) Install database software on both nodes locally.
c2.1) No. No DRDB.
c2.2) Both nodes. Same installation.
Regards
Sebastian

Dears,
I'm planning to deploy System Center Operation Manager 2012 R2 on SQL 2012 Active/Passive Cluster which have other sql instances running for other applications. And i'm planning to create a new instance for SCOM, kindly provide me recommendation
whether i can install all sql databases for SCOM on same sql instance or does it require separate instances for opsmanger database , dw database and ACS database?
Thanks in advance..

Hi,
Yes, all SCOM SQL databases can run on the same instance of SQL server.
As well, look at some helpful posts for the topic:

• Manual enabling and disabling of activation agent in active-active topology

For Active-Active Topology for Adapters we can deploy and run Oracle BPEL Process Manager and business processes on all nodes but only one adapter service is running at any given time. In case of failover we need to manually disable the Activation Agent on the failed node & enable the activation agent on another node.
One customer has the below queries. Could anyone help.
a)Is there any way to automate the process of enabling and disabling of activation agent in active active topology ie failover is auto-detected and enabling & disabling happens automatically?
b)What is the suggested clustering topology for BPEL from oracle

Customer tried the configuration given in the doc http://download-west.oracle.com/docs/cd/B31017_01/integrate.1013/b31005/life_cycle.htm#CIABHCFE
But after applying the changes they are getting the following error message: "Invalid activation parameter.Activation parameter Physical/Logical Directory has invalid value. Check the error stack and fix the cause of the error."
1. Why this error coming?
2. Also the doc said If the BPEL PM servers (JVMs) in the cluster are located across TCP/IP subnet boundaries, then it is necessary to add the attribute clusterAcrossSubnet=true. Can I have more details on parameter "clusterAcrossSubnet=true" (with an example preferred)

• SQL server 2012 active\passive or active\active cluster

Hi all,
I will two SQL 2012 servers in a cluster, what will be the best mode: active\passive or active\active knowing that will have one clustered instance. When we use active\passive and when to use active\active? Do we use active\active if we have multiple clustered
sql instances only?
Note: the two-node sql cluster will be installed on Hyper-V 2012 R2 cluster

Download this Microsoft whitepaper about Windows 2008 R2 Failover cluster. Here's an excerpt:
Active/Active failover cluster model. All nodes in the failover cluster are functioning and serving clients. If a node fails, the
resource will move to another node and continue to function normally, assuming that the new server has enough capacity to handle the additional workload.
Active/Passive failover cluster model. One node in the failover cluster typically sits idle until a failover occurs. After a failover,
this passive node becomes active and provides services to clients.  Because it was passive, it presumably has enough capacity to serve the failed-over application without performance degradation.

• Duplicate Instances are coming on Active- Active Cluster

Hi,
I am using FileAdapter on a shared drive in Active-Active cluster.
I have done all Oracle Recommended settings(e.g. eis/HAFileAdapter).
Also I would just like to mention that , I have not used below property for my Active Active cluster.
"<property name="singleton">true</property>"
I am getting a strange issue of duplicate processing of same file.
Some times I can see 2-3 instances with the same details and some time it will work normally and I will see only one instance.
I am not able to find out the reason for that.
Any pointers are suggestions would be appreciated ?
Thanks,
Ashu

You have to have ClusterGroupId to make one node active and another inactive in composite.xml file.
<activationAgents>
<activationAgent className="oracle.tip.adapter.fw.agent.jca.JCAActivationAgent" partnerLink="ReadFileContent">
<property name="portType">Read_ptt</property>
*<property name="clusterGroupId">ReadFileCluster</property>* </activationAgent>
</activationAgents>

• Active-Active cluster, duplicate instances?

Hi,
We have a active-active cluster and we get all instances as double amount. All adapter db, ftp etc. Like we read file using ftp-adapter and it creates two instances from one file? What is problem in our environment?

add signletone property for the services(ftp adapter in composite.xml)
<property name ="singleton">true</property>

For dropping the database, using the DBCA is the best approach. After the removal, use the command srvctl to remove the entries from the OCR.

• Managing Active/Passive Cluster.

Hi,
We are having active passive cluster
environment and we are running webMethods on
it.
The problem we are having is whenever we do
any changes we need to do a failover and then
do the same task on the passive one as well.
Can anybody help how to make this thing
automatic so that we deploy any package/fixes
on webmethods and should get replicated on
the passive one.
Thanks,
Amit.

If you are manipulating data-files, that do not affect the Application (in this case webmethods) then simply use the cluster console, which allows you to perform updates on multiple hosts at the same time.
Alternatively if you are making changes to the application itself then, does the application management software ( I am not that familier with webmethods) not allow you to distribute changes across an application domain, ie. using the application tools and not the underlying cluster framework.

Veritas active/passive cluster is very easy to use. I am not sure about linux but I guess even for linux there are having gui interface which is very user friendly. Its like cluster will use common storage and one node will be configured as active other as passive in case any failure occurs at node1 automaticly node2 will become active.
