LV code using ActiveX of a spectrometer

Hi all,
we have been using a LV code to make measurements with a spectrometer connected to our computer with a usb plug. It ran fine, the ActiveX being registered in the computere base. Lately, we upgraded LV for LV 8.6. It is now impossible to run our code. We have a "crash", meaning when we launch the program, it takes some long seconds with the computer working but with nothing operating. Then all LV windows are closed, with no error messages. Nothing. We tested the spectrometer with the manufacturer software, and everything works fine. The LV code is extremely simple and will be used after in a larger code. It basically consists in opening an activeX, calling one property, getting an array of values
Any idea of what's happening ?.

1- Which version of LabVIEW were you using formerly?
We developped it with LV 8.5, and LV 8.2. Tests and measurements were made months ago on two different computers (Dell Latitude). Worked fine.
2- Are you using the same computer?
No, the problem occured on a 3rd computer, a NEC one if I am correct, with LV 8.6.1
3- If you re-run the code with the former version of LabVIEW, does it work properly?
Yes, and no. Some issues occured. The PC crashed lately. It was formated and LV reinstalled from 8.5 to 8.6.
The code works but we have some glitches sometimes, as if it could not find yhe specvtrometer.
4- Did you create the simple example you're talking about from scratch or did you copy it from your project?
We created it from scratch.
5- Can you really see the ActiveX Class you want to use into the ActiveX Class Browser (right click on the Automation Refnum)?
Yes, once the ActiveX registered in the windows registry.
6- Do you reproduce the behavior with another class (from MS Excel form example)?
Not tested. Cannot say.
My colleague and I took a 4th PC a laptop (NEC) with LV 8.2 and wrote again the whole code (which is not too long so that was aceptable). It worked fine ! So now we have to figure out if the problem is the PC or our LV 8.6.1 version ...

i have a problem using ActiveX to open excel files. I get error code "-2146827284" (unknown error) when trying to open a workbook. This problem occurs on only one machine i work with, on the others it works fine. All machines have the same setup, Excel97 and Excel2007 installed on them.

Creation of the application object has nothing to do with opening the workbook, which is what is generating the error. If you are getting an error with opening the workbook then you either have the wrong path, a permissions issue, a network issue, or the file is already open.

Distributing labview code. Should I use Activex or DLLs?

I need to allow VB access to my functions. Is Activex really slow? Can I have operator dialogs embedded in dlls? Has anybody ever distributed serious labview code using either?

Performance-wise I'm not avare of major differences one way or another. The main thing I would consider is the conceptual differences between the two approaches:
** With ActiveX you have a seperate program running that you are controlling remotely.
** With DLLs you have discrete bits of code that you are linking to from your program.
Given what you and your users are going to want to do, which model fits the application better? Also, how much work do you want the external code to do?

How to control and display video from IP camera using ActiveX control over Internet.

Hello,
I need to control my IP cameras over the internet. I need to log into the cameras and then display the video. There's an ActiveX control registered on the computer and works fine with IE to access and control the cameras. Controlling the cameras using IE works fairly well, but there are some quirks that I'd like to eliminate by using my own custom code.
Has anyone created a vi that controls a Foscam FI8905W over the Internet? I’ve attempted, but I keep getting a catastrophic failure when I try to call ManagementConnect Method in the DVM_IPCam2 ActiveX Control Module V1.0. I'm not sure whether I need to establish an IP connection with the cameras first, or allow the ActiveX control to establish it for me.
Some example code would be greatly appreciated. Running LabVIEW 2011 on a Win7 32bit. Even some code used to control a similar device using ActiveX over Internet would be helpful.

I have an example vi for interfacing to the foscam activex.
I plan on using mouse click events within the activex window to trigger the PT function.
I only have the basic up/down/right/left directions and not the down-right/down-left/up-right/up-left in the enum. You can load the camera's web page and view the source to see the Java script code that uses the activex control. There are definitions for the other directions.
I had to mark the control as "Disabled" to keep click events from going to the activex control. If I double click the control, it goes full screen. If I then click on it to get out of full screen mode the video never returns or returns to the wrong spot in the VI.

Recent loss of embedded QT movies on many page for IE7 using ActiveX object

I have many pages that allow you to select from 4 video formats including QT .mov. An example is at http://www.cwdjr.net/video4/cancanL.php . The QT object uses ActiveX when on IE only(I use Windows conditional comments) and an ordinary object for most other browsers. Until sometime very recently all of these pages worked when you select the QT file. Now QT works on none of them. I suspected the problem might be due to a very recent Windows XP update which is a large one including .NET updates and other things(K8951847) X 86. I was able to restore to a day before this update, but this did not solve the problem. Of course some portions of some updates can not be removed be restoring to an earlier time, so the result does not prove the update was not at fault.
The involved pages are mostly written in php on the server, so you will not be able to see very much by viewing the source code. To make the problem more simple to view, I made a test page for QT only and with the ActiveX object only. Thus this test page can not be viewed on most browsers that do not support ActiveX. The test page is at http://www.cwdjr.info/broadbandMedia/formatsAX/qtmovtest2.php . Since I serve pages as valid xhtml 1.1 using the correct mime type application xhtml+xml, no IE browser can view the page, since no IE browser can support xhtml served properly. Thus I have a php include at the very top for header exchange between the browser and server. If this says the page does not support the mime type for xhtml, then php using regular expressions, etc is used to rewrite the page as html 4.01 strict for the outmoded browser. Thus don't be surprised if you find some pages in xhtml and others in html when you check properties.
The ActiveX object used for QT on the test page is below:

Once the page comes up on IE7, it is rather slow to respond. Then it gives:
"Web site wants to install the following ActiveX control: 'Quick Time' from 'Apple Inc'".
If you do try to install, nothing happens. In contrast to my regular pages, I added the code show above just before the start of the object. Clicking this on will bring up the QT video, but of course it is not embedded on the desired page. This may work as a temporary fix for IE. I likely can hide it from other browsers by enclosing it in Microsoft conditional comments.
I would be interested if anyone else has had such a problem recently or any ideas concerning this strange response on IE7. I am talking about viewing the page on the server. Since this is a php page it can be viewed locally only if you have a server installed on your computer and I do not. The pages with the first url example given above have operated well on IE7, Firefox, Opera, Safari for Windows, Flock, K-Meleon, Google Chrome and SeaMonkey. There are a few players that have some issues with some of the formats, but this and the fact that some players may not be installed is the reason for offering the video in 4 formats. I sometimes offer high broadband versions as well as low broadband versions.
It seems I spend more time correcting IE issues than for all of the other mentioned browsers combined.

Thanks for the reference. I use nearly no JS anymore, since it often causes problems with true xhtml served properly even when you use external script files. Often one can use php script on the server and avoid these problems. When one serves as true xhtml using the correct mime type of application/xhtml+xml, the page is parsed with a very strict xml parser rather than a loose-as-a-goose html parser. (If one serves a page written in xhtml code as mime text/html, as is incorrectly done perhaps 99% of the time, you are using only html, not xhtml, and are fooling only yourself. The page is parsed as html instead of xhtml.) The xml parser has to be very strict to account for any possible xml content. Even a single, or even several, errors often will not prevent a html page from showing, but even a single error on an xhtml page served properly will often get an error report from the xml parser rather than a view of the page. One of the most laughable examples of misunderstanding of this issue is the home page of Microsoft. It claims to be xhtml. However it is served as text/html and thus would be better written in html 4.01 in the first place. Moreover, if you validate the page as xhtml at w3c, you find hundreds of xhtml errors. If Microsoft served their home page properly as application/xhtml+xml it of course would not work on any IE browser, at least through IE7, since none of these IE browsers can handle true xhtml. In addition the page likely would not show up on any browser if served as true xhtml until all of the hundreds of xml and other errors on the page were corrected. Instead, one likely would get a very long error report rather than a view of the page.
Back to JS, document.write will not work in properly served xhtml, because it easily could produce code with XML errors. For instance it might produce code that contains an unclosed tag, which is a major xml error that can cause an xml device to malfunction. The xml parser thus rightly finds document.write as an error and prevents viewing of the page. However one often can generate the same code as document.write would produce on a browser with php on the server. The finished code is what gets downloaded to the browser, so the xml parser can check everything in the finished code rather than quess what a JS document.write might produce. And don't think you can sweep document.write under the rug by using an external JS file. The very strict xml parser finds it.
Of course embed has never been a w3c tag, but rather is a bad hangover from the browser war era, a gift of Netscape. No page that includes embed can validate as w3c xhtml or xml of any flavor, at least through xhtml 1.1. However the page may work, despite the error, if server as text/html.
All I know is that something has happened recently that has caused my problem to surface. It likely has to do with some change in the XP OS or IE browser. I have tried viewing several pages written by others that use many types of code for .mov, and all of them I have viewed that use an ActiveX embed for the benefit of IE now have the problem I mentioned. If anyone else with XP and nearly all updates, including the very recent one I mentioned, and the most recent version of QT has had this problem, I could be more confident that the problem comes from an external source. If not, it is still possible the sudden change could be something concerning a specific issue that has developed in my computer.
Again, thanks for the JS reference. Some of this likely can translate into php so I can compare how the JS and php server script I am using relate.

Using ActiveX in Oracle Forms6i

Sir I have development an ActiveX in VB for urdu in oracle forms.
The problems I am facing is that it is storing the input efficiently but
when I Query the saved data it is not working,
I got an Error that OLE Object not defined for the current record.

I am not getting the point that why the Error OLE object not defined occur in
display case where as in new record the object is activited on new record
instane by itself but not in post query
I am working on application of a library with Urdu data and at last step Iam

Ignore my previous post. I misread the question.
There is no support for using ActiveX in JDeveloper. What you would need to do is to wrap your activex in a Java class and then you'd be able to use that java class in your project. There may be some facilities available somewhere on the internet that would help you doing that. I just don't know of any.

I don't understand the logic of what you are trying to do, but anytime code doesn't do what you expect, the first place to start looking is at any errors that are being generated - which you aren't collecting or displaying...

Howto use ActiveX made in VB in LabView

Hi,
In LabView you can make a container for an ActiveX object.
I have made an ActiveX component in Visual Basic. How can I access this in
LabView. If I make an ActiveX dll I cannot find the functions in LabView. If
I make and ActiveX ocx I cannot find the object in the object list in
LabView.
What are the constraints in LabView regarding ActiveX components?

Leif,
I previously used ActiveX containers created in VB (most are) in a LabVIEW project. If memory serves, all I did was to place the OCX in a file, and manually browse to it using the Active X browser. I had trouble with registering due to some bug or "feature" that wouldn't update the OCX from the registry in LabVIEW. Everytime we updated the OCX, it would break all of our code. Our solution was to NOT register it, and browse to it manually. That worked great.
So, drop in a container open or invoke node on your diagram, right click to open the browser, and choose "Browse" to the right of the name. This will allow you to browse directly to an OCX.
I strongly recommend placing your OCXs in an embedded file within your deployment file structure.
That will make it much easier when you deploy your project.

How to register for class while using ActiveX

I am trying to use ActiveX to send an email with Microsoft Outlook. I have found an example Vi. but i was getting an error with code "-2147221164" (Class not registered in Outlook_Mail-1.vi). How to register for that class and what are the files required for that registration.

How can i use activeX in abap?

hi exports,
i have a activeX of group-ware in my windows-XP.
and, a method of the activeX export employee-code of user.
i want to get a employee-code using the method.
how can i use the activeX in abap?

Using activex control in forms 6i

hi all,
I want to use activex control in my form. (e.g Spreadsheet.11) . how to set the cell property (value,colour,border etc..)
i have created activex control in form and imported ole libraries, run time i am able to see the control .Ii want to set cell properties . any suggestion/help/code greatly appreciated

when u load activex (spreedsheet) the corresponting menu also u can see when u run through which also you can set the attribute values
im also check the same it is working

Using ActiveX to _READ_ outlook mail

Hello everyone!
I am trying to fetch email messages from outlook and process them in my labview software. I have seen the various examples and posts about sending email with outlook using ActiveX, but after crawling around the web I have not seen any examples of reading email in labview using ActiveX. I am a newcomer to using ActiveX and am struggling with the specifics of how to do this. I hope that the LabVIEW fairies can leave some guidance - or better yet, an example - under my pillow (How to examine the inbox for new messages, fetch them, and then erase them).
I have successfully run various examples of sending an email, but I don't know exactly which sequence of ActiveX classes/calls to use to read email, or which types to wire to the inputs of the invoke node blocks (many of the inputs/outputs are variants, so if you don't know what they're supposed to be, you can't create them).
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

LabView interface with DLL that uses ActiveX

I've written a DLL using Microsoft Visual Studio 2005. This DLL uses ActiveX (MSXML4.0). It works fine being called from other applications created in Microsoft Visual Studio. It crashes being called from LabView 7.1. By commenting out everything, I've figured out that it crashes on the call to ActiveX (no problems if this call is commented out). What should I do to make it work?
I've tried using CoInitialize at the initialization of DLL; it didn't solve the problem.
Additional information: DLL is using MFC in a Static Library, not using ATL, Character set = Not Set.
The functions are defined in C calling convention (not __stdcall).
Please help.

Thank you for your answer, but that is not the case. There is no UI in this DLL, but it is using some convinenient MFC classes, like threads, CString, etc. The threading really was not even involved in the example that crashed. The function that crashed was
selectNodes on MSXML2::IXMLDOMNodePtr. Here is the code:
MSXML2::IXMLDOMNodeListPtr selectNodes (LPCTSTR expression, MSXML2::IXMLDOMNodePtr pStartNode)
CComBSTR quesryBstr (expression);
return pStartNode->selectNodes (quesryBstr.m_str); //_bstr_t(expression));
where the pStartNode was a root node of
MSXML2::IXMLDOMDocument2Ptr m_pXMLDoc;
hr = m_pXMLDoc.CreateInstance ("Msxml2.DOMDocument.4.0", NULL, CLSCTX_INPROC_SERVER);
I commented out really everything except this function, so there was nothing to corrupt the memory or any other problems.
What can be of a problem?
