LVM waits for seven minutes (see latest post)

Once upon a time my computer powered up in ~40 seconds. Alas those days are gone! Nowadays there is a seven minute (approx.) pause between GRUB and any output on the screen.
There are no errors in any log or dmesg that I can find. After GRUB runs there appears to be IO activity and a blinking cursor.
I *think* this started happening shortly after an upgrade.

Any ideas?

Have you checked for filesystem errors?
Booting to X, Y or Z make no difference as the seven minute pause is during the load of the kernel and once loaded everything works fine.
I have tried the fallback kernel and just booting to single user, both have a seven minute pause. I don't have any other OS to boot.
Yes and most likely, and they would be gone now due to logrotate.
fsck returns ok.

If so I'd check your shutdown procedure, try going to "init 1" first, do a "sync" then watch for messages after typing "halt" (or shutdown, reboot etc).
Why yes it is! I'll give it a go

  • Wait for 3 minutes and then run another method

    I'm calling a JMS service lets say runProgress() the method adds a new row into a database then waits for 3 minutes and then runs another method that removes the row from the table.
    I was thinking about this, and thought that I could create a new Thread, let it wait for 3 minutes and the run the other method.
    The thing is what happens if there are 10.000 users running this at the same time, then there would be 10.000 Threads, wouldn't it be a hevy load on the server.
    Is there any other way?? Suggestions?

    What do you think about if there are massive, like
    10.000+, queue's in memory, this would be slow down
    for the server, right? or isn't it a trouble?you don't need 10.000 queues - just one single queue. you may have a lot of objects in the queue but this is at most a memory problem - depends on the size of the information you need.
    maybe i was not clear enough: you have a single queue where the tasks are put into. then there are other threads (at least 1) that read from the queue and perform actions.
    One option, that I don't know how to do yet but
    thinking about it, is to let the database have some
    kind of a procedure that would run after 3 minutes,
    but I guess that I were only moving the memory trouble
    from the app-server to the database. (hope you
    understand me)yes, i think so.
    So it would be just as good to do this in the
    app-server as in the database, what do you think?a good idea. typically with all these optimization issues you just have to try out. otherwise you won't know the result.

    Saw this solution on another post about an iPad in a school environment. Might work on your iPad so you won't lose everything.
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    ‘iPad is disabled’ fix without resetting using iTunes
    Today I met my match with an iPad that had a passcode entered too many times, resulting in it displaying the message ‘iPad is disabled – Connect to iTunes’. This was a student iPad and since they use Notability for most of their work there was a chance that her files were not all backed up to the cloud. I really wanted to just re-activate the iPad instead of totally resetting it back to our default image.
    I reached out to my PLN on Twitter and had some help from a few people through retweets and a couple of clarification tweets. I love that so many are willing to help out so quickly. Through this I also learned that I look like Lt. Riker from Star Trek (thanks @FillineMachine).
    Through some trial and error (and a little sheer luck), I was able to reactivate the iPad without loosing any data. Note, this will only work on the computer it last synced with. Here’s how:
    1. Configurator is useless in reactivating a locked iPad. You will only be able to completely reformat the iPad using Configurator. If that’s ok with you, go for it – otherwise don’t waste your time trying to figure it out.
    2. Open iTunes with the iPad disconnected.
    3. Connect the iPad to the computer and wait for it to show up in the devices section in iTunes.
    4. Click on the iPad name when it appears and you will be given the option to restore a backup or setup as a new iPad (since it is locked).
    5. Click ‘Setup as new iPad’ and then click restore.
    6. The iPad will start backing up before it does the full restore and sync. CANCEL THE BACKUP IMMEDIATELY. You do this by clicking the small x in the status window in iTunes.
    7. When the backup cancels, it immediately starts syncing – cancel this as well using the same small x in the iTunes status window.
    8. The first stage in the restore process unlocks the iPad, you are basically just cancelling out the restore process as soon as it reactivates the iPad.
    If done correctly, you will experience no data loss and the result will be a reactivated iPad. I have now tried this with about 5 iPads that were locked identically by students and each time it worked like a charm.
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    Try it and good luck. You have nothing more to lose if it doesn't work for you.
     Cheers, Tom

  • BPM: Wait for response in asynch scenario

    Hi,
    I have implemented a BPM which is working (but not as it should). The scenario is R3 IDoc - XI - Legacy SOAP - XI - SAP, and the requirement from the legacy web service is that we cannot sent another Idoc to the web service until we get a response (ALEAUD) back. We also cannot use synchronous interfaces.
    I thought that the BPM would solve this, the BPM contains a receive IDoc step, send Idoc (SOAP), receive ALEAUD response (SOAP) and send ALEAUD (IDOC), all steps asynchronous. But if I send two IDocs from R/3 they get both get sent to web service, even though the second Idoc should wait for a the ALEAUD from the web service before being sent. It seems that XI just creates a new instance of the BPM and runs the second IDoc in this one.
    Is there a way to implement that when XI receives several IDocs from R/3, XI queues them up and sends them one by one and wait for a response before sending next one?
    I have implemented correlation to relate the response to the message sent out.
    Thanks a lot for your help!

    Yes, the response references the Idoc number of the request.
    I actually tried this, but it didn't work the way I expected it. It seems that XI just creates a new instance of the BPM for the next IDoc it receives from R/3, so there are in fact several instances of the BPM running at the same time.
    I tried with a fork, where branch 1 is a loop that is always true (1=1) and branch2 has a receive step with the local correlation. The fork should stop if two branches are true. This did not work as I hoped.
    Right now I am trying a fork with two branches, branch1 includes a loop, inside loop I have a switch which invokes a send step if a simple type flag is on and a cont operation which turns the flag off, otherwise it waits for a minute. Branch2 of the fork has a receive step waiting for the response, with local correlation, and a cont operation which turns the flag on.
    Will this work? I am not sure if this simple type flag is global, that is if it works for all instances of this BPM or just the one BPM it resides in.
    Is there some way of forcing XI to not create new instances of a BPM, but rather have all messages go the same instance? this would solve  my issue as I see it.
    Thanks!
