LXDE, vino-server, black screen on connection to Arch desktop

Hi all, yet another Arch newb question.
I started vino-server on my Arch LXDE desktop. I accidentally started it as a foreground process, but the advantage is that I can see it running.
I used dconf editor to DISABLE the "encryption required" setting for desktop sharing. (I've tried it both ways - enabled and disabled - same result.)
xtightvncviewer run from Chrubuntu on my laptop from the command line shows a successful connection, and I can see vino-server accepting the connections over on my Arch desktop.
But any graphical viewer on my laptop shows a black screen.
I don't see anything here on the forums and didn't find anything good via Google.

This appears to have been an issue with the 10.5.5 upgrade. The server showed 10.5.4 and Software Update showed me up to date. I manually downloaded the 10.5.5 combo update and installed it. I had kernal panics on 3 separate restarts afterward, but on the 4th try the machine booted and ARD visibility was restored. No more remote system updates for me, I'm doing all of them while I'm at the machine.
Thanks,
Kyle

When I try to use ARD to connect to my XServe all I get is a black screen. For some reason though using VNC from a PC works fine. Any thoughts?

Just to follow this up, found that having jumb frames enabled was causing this. Change the frame size back to 1500 and it works fine.

  • [SOLVED] black screen when connecting rdesktop to localhost

I am trying to set up my machine so I can remote into it via RDP.
    When I run the command
    rdesktop localhost
from my terminal rdesktop pops up.  I choose sesman-Xvnc and type in my password and a plain black screen is all I get.  Sometimes I'll get a message that says "Oh no Something has gone wrong.  A problem has occurred and the system can't recover. All extensions have been disabled as a precaution." It also gives me a log out button.
I have installed xrdp from the AUR via yaourt.  I am using xrdp version 0.6.1-1,  tigervnc 1.4.0-1, and rdesktop 1.8.3-1.
In trying to isloate the problem I tested tigervnc by running
    vncserver

    #!/bin/sh

    unset DBUS_SESSION_BUS_ADDRESS

I've tried restarting vncserver.service with systemctl and I get the same error.
Per the vncserver wiki I created a vncserver@:1.service file in /etc/systemd/system and enabled it.  It starts and runs without a problem.
I have tried using the nouveau video drivers instead of the nvidia driver that I'm currently using and that produced a similar result but with a white square at the upper left hand corner of the rdesktop window.
I'm new to arch-linux and linux in general.  I've been using it for about a month now and I've been able to solve all of my problems through using this forum, reading wikis and the man pages of command line programs.  This one has me completely stumped.
I have no reason to believe the problem is related to xrdp or to rdesktop because the only errors or decent information I have been able to find about what could be going wrong has been the vncserver.service error shown above.

Ok.  I finally got this working.  What I did was I created a file at /etc/systemd/system called vncserver@:4.service and set the user in the file to my username.  Then I went into xrdp.ini which is located at /etc/xrdp and under [xrdp1], (which is for sesman-Xvnc ) I set the port value to 5904 which is the port that my vncserver@:4 service uses when its running.
Since xrdp uses tigervnc as its back end it was just a matter of pointing it to a running vncserver.
    Don't I feel silly
Thanks Knute for your help.  Your idea led me to the right answer.

  • Dell U2711 black screen when connected to Mac via DisplayPort

I currently have a Dell U2711 27" monitor connected to my Mac Mini through DVI (it uses a DVI to mini-DVI adapter at the PC end). However, I cannot get the full resolution of the monitor 1920 x 1080 maximum is offered were the monitors maximum resolution is 2560 x 1440.
I did some Googling and seemed it required DisplayPort connection to achieve this. No dramas. I ordered a Mini-DisplayPort to DisplayPort cable.
I plugged this in and all I get on the Dell is a black screen. The monitor doesn't go into power save mode or anything like that, just displays nothing - an illuminated black screen.
I pulled out my MacBook and connected the cable to that, same deal. The Mac recognises that the cable has been connected (as the laptops LCD goes blue for a second or two while it detects the new monitor).
    Any ideas?
I also had a DisplayPort to DisplayPort cable here which was included with the monitor from Dell, which I will test aswell when my miniDisplayPort to DisplayPort adapter arrived.

Yes, that is one means, but...
However, HDMI 1.3 can also carry resolutions higher than 1920 x 1080 - check out http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HDMI - not really an option on the Dell monitor though, as it only supports up to 1080p on the HDMI connection. However, there is a thread elsewhere on the internet of a user who forced his Windows laptop to use 2560 x 1440 resolution via the HDMI output and the Dell monitor accepted it!
In addition, so can DisplayPort - as per my original post.
The Apple Dual-Link DVI adapter is plagued with issues and has a lot of faults, so I'd rather avoid it. It is also significantly higher priced than the above option of DP.

  • ARD 3.4 + 10.5 Server to 10.4/5 Server = Black Screen

This sort of a reposting of a locked/archived post at...
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2413768
I'm reposting this because the prior post's solution fixes my exact issue: change Ethernet MTU from 9000 (Jumbo) to "Standard" (1500).
I don't want to change MTU on my primary fileserver, since I'm looking to squeeze every ounce of performance out of it.
Note: I do not see this black screen issue using ARB 3.4 from my 10.6.6 client to any machines.
    Hopefully, others find this helpful.

Like I said, the solution from previous post addresses this very same issue.

  • Black Screen with cursor. Java Desktop System.

    Hello everyone.
    I've installed Solaris 10 05/08 x86 32bit in VMWare Workstation 6.5.
After I logged in in the system (Java Desktop System, Release 3), I've got only a black screen with cursor, nothing more.

  • Twin Frozr II/oc Black screen wait time before showing desktop

Help guys I'm using driver version 8.892.0.0 AMD at present and it takes approx 25 sec to go from the black screen to desktop after logging in any suggestions to curing the problem.  vitals below
    Gigabyte Z68 UD3H-B3
    Twin Frozr II/oc 6950
    16gb g.skill 1866
    OCZ 60gb SSD
    WD 750 s3
Cooler Master 700w Extreme Power Plus

Uninstall the Catalyst and use the latest Driver Cleaner (it's a Free Download) while in Safe Mode.
After you reboot from Safe Mode .. goto AMD website. I would recommend downloading Catalyst 11.10 rather than 11.11 as heard many problems with that one this month. You'll have to look for Previous Drivers listed at AMD site or can just Google for AMD Catalyst 11.10 download and find a known good site to download it from.
I would not attempt to BIOS Flash the HD 6950's to make them 6970 like.  The 1st few batches released early this year you could but they have been fixed. So GPU BIOS Flashing may and likely will damage the card.
Remember to always perform a HDD Backup ... also easy to do is System Restore Points ..that way if things get messy ..can go back.
Wish you the best of Success!

  • Black Screen when connection apple TV 2. Gen to my TV via HDMI an over a Doulby Suround System (Sound is OK)

    Dear Apple Comunity,
at first i want to wish all the best to the family and close friends of Mr. Jobs. It is a sad loss for all of us.
To come back to my topic:
I connected my apple TV set by HDMI to my Yamaha Doulby Surround System. When i try to use it then one in a while the screen stays black but i can hear the sounds of using my apple TV. I guess that indicates that the signales went from the apple TV to the Yamaha System but somehow the visual informations don´t reach my TV (and yes, i pluged the HDMI-Cable from the Yamaha to the TV-Set).
It just happens once in a while and i don´t know what to do about it. It´s pretty inconviniend that way.
The only way to get it back in track is to remove the Powerplug (HDMI doesn´t work).
    Any suggestions.
    Regards
    René Engel
PS. Pls excuse my bad english.

I suspect it's your receiver, connect the HDMI directly between the Apple TV and the TV and use an optical cable to your receiver from the Apple TV for audio.

  • Windows Server 2008 black screen with mouse *PLEASE HELP*

    Hello fellow techs,
I have been tearing my hair out for the past 12hrs on this issue.
About 3 weeks ago, one of our clients reported that they were experiencing
issues on the network so one of the staff went into the server room and noticed
the screen was black with only the cursor. As they couldn't reboot, they
decided to hold the power button to power it off. When they powered it back
up, it went passed the windows loading
splash screen, and again the screen is black with
the mouse pointer in the center of the screen.
I am diagnosing the server and find that at the black screen, I’m able to move
the cursor and beyond that nothing happened. I started in safe mode with the
    exact same results.
I have been trying many different solutions from posts that I have found in
    Google but no change.
From other machines you can type \\servername in
the run box and see the shared folders, as well as ping it.
This is a very urgent request as I need to have the Server back up and running
    by tomorrow.
I am quiet willing to pay for phone support with anyone that can assist as soon
as possible. I am happy to transfer founds via Paypal.<o:p></o:p>

Before going further, would you please let me know whether there were any changes on the affected server? Has windows update or any new device been added? Please also check your shadow copies.
The Windows Server black screen may be caused by them.

  • 2012 Virtual Machine Black Screens Whenever Promoting to Domain Controller

I have a brand new 2012 cluster with 2 hyper-v host nodes running Server 2012 (not R2). I have successfully spun up several virtual machines from templates via VMM 2012R2.
I added the AD DS role today to my DC01 server running server 2012 (not R2). Then I promoted it to a domain controller. When it came back up I got the login screen as normal and logged in. Upon login I only see a black screen. I can click ctr-alt-del and
get the typical menu, but only logout responds. Everything else such as Task Manager just goes back to the black screen. Connecting via remote eventvwr and checking logs and events shows the DC Promo was successful; I can verify replication to other DC's etc.
I don't see any problems with this server other than I can't see it after login. RDPing in provides the black screen as well. I am able to log in via safe mode and can see the desktop, but am not sure how to troubleshoot from there. I verified that integration
services were latest and greatest before I promo'd.
I de-promo'd it via server manager on another server 2012 server, then removed the roles and deleted it. I just created a new server and did the same process, only used a remote server manager for DCpromo this time. After reboot I have the identical issue
    with a black screen.
    Can anyone help?
