Lync 2013 client connectivity to Lync Edge Pool

Hi all,
I have a question regarding Lync 2013 topology deployment
I have read somewhere that
The external interfaces of the Edge Server must not be routable by either clients or servers on the internal corporate network. The internal interface of the Edge Server must not be routable from the Internet. These routing principles must be enforced by deploying
firewalls between the Edge Servers (an internal and an external firewall) or by enforcing strict routing at the network layer.
Is the statement true? If it is, then there is no way for the internal client to talk directly to Edge server: its internal network interface doesn't have default route, so this interface can't talk to any client/server that is located on different subnet.
(unless I have to manually add-route in command line for all the subnets in the internal network, which is not preferable)
Any advise is greatly appreciated. Thanks

The mentioned statement is true. You need to manually add static routes in to the Edge server. Only the external interface must have a Gateway configured.

  • Lync Edge functional for external client but federation is not working

    Hi,
I am working on Lync Edge Server from couple of weeks but unfortunately, I can't federate with Skype and other partners. First of all I want to mention following things:
    1. Lync 2013 Front-End Server is fully functional for Internal Users
    2. Lync 2013 Reverse Proxy is fully functional for Mobile Users
    3. Lync 2013 Edge Server is fully functional for External Users except Federation.
Let me share Edge Server current configuration with you.
    1. Lync Edge Pool have two NICs, Internal (Private IP) and External (3 Public IPs with default gateway and External DNS)
    2. Host File have entries for Lync front-end server
    3. Local CA certificate for Internal Interface and Starfield CA Certificate for External interface with required SAN e.g., acs.domain.com etc
    4. Skype is searching my domain URIs but added contact is showing offline in skype
    5. Lync 2013 Basic client is showing Presence Unknown for Skype contacts (Skype contacts already merged with Live ID)
    6. Test-CSFederatedPartner cmdlet is also giving 504 error while testing from Front-end server.
This is production environment actually so please let me know if I am missing something.

    Verify that you configure SRV Record on External DNS {SRV Record _sipfederationtls._tcp.<domain> on port 5061 and SRV Record _sip._tls.<domain> on port 443}
Also Verify that you enable lync federation on Lync topology and publish it
On a Front End server, open Topology Builder. Expand Edge pools, then right click your Edge server or Edge server pool. Select Edit properties.
In Edit Properties under General, select Enable federation for this Edge pool (Port 5061). Click OK.
Click Action, select Topology, select Publish. When prompted on Publish the topology, click Next. When the Publish is finished, click Finish.
On the Edge server, open the Lync Server Deployment wizard. Click Install or Update Lync Server System, then click Setup or Remove Lync Server Components. Click Run Again.
At Setup Lync Server components, click Next. The summary screen will show actions as they are executed. Once the deployment is done, click View Log to view available log files. Click Finish to complete the deployment.

  • Lync 2013 Client Not Display Numbers in Contact Card

    Hi
I have a problem where Lync 2013 client connecting to Lync 2010 backend appears not download the contact list completely. Lync 2010 clients are all operating normally.  On Lync 2010 client, you can view all contact details including Enterprise Voice
numbers and cell numbers for all users. However on Lync 2013 clients, Lync contact details for some users do not populate completely. In most cases, Enterprise numbers/Work Numbers/Mobile Numbers are missing.  If the contact is pinned then the details
    are retrieved.
In cases where Work/Voice/Cell numbers are not displayed, affected users is limited to making lync to lync  calls only. The user can still dial the number  and get through without any issues.
I have deleted and contacts cache on Lync 2013 but this has not helped.

    Hi,
How about check the contact of “Outlook Test” user from the Lync 2010 client?
According to the second screenshot, since it’s an external account, the information will be limited.

  • How to replace Lync Edge serverswith new servers(hardware)?

Our company have two Lync Edge servers, which are in one Lync Edge pool. Now, we plan to replace them with new  Lync Edge servers, new hardware. Thus, i would like to know: How to make sure the transition is smooth? Do you have any related article/KB?
I have some questions about this, for example:
    1. should we create new Edge  pool for the new servers?
    2. Can we have the four servers exist for some time before we remove the old servers?
    Please advice. Thanks!

    Deara Ben,
Thanks for your kindly reply on this issue. Sorry for the delay rely due to China Mid-Autumn Festival.
I prefer to the second option--add new servers into the old pool, because i think this is easier than option 1. My implement and test plan is below, do you think it is feasible??
    1. Prepare
1.1 Add two windows servers(A and B), configure external IP (Ex_IP_A and Ex_IP_B) and internal IP for everyone.
1.2 Add new servers into current Lync Edge pool, then publish topo and import the topo file into new servers
    1.3 Install Lync Server components
    1.4 Import and assign cert
1.5 Check service status, make sure services work well
    2. Test
2.1 Open related ports for both new server, on internal firewall and external firewall.
2.2 Apply new internet IP for new server, configure " NAT enabled public IP" for both servers in topology builder(Pub_IP_A and Pub_IP_B) here, then publish the topo.
    2.3 Configure NAT on external Firewall(Pub_IP_A<--->Ex_IP_A; Pub_IP_B<--->Ex_IP_B)
2.4 On the client, modify the local hosts file,
add below DNS record(Pub_IP_A   Sip.domain.com ), log in Lync client then test whether
    server A works well.
2.5 On the client, modify the local hosts file,
add below DNS record(Pub_IP_B   Sip.domain.com ), log in Lync client then test whether
    server B works well.

  • How to connect Lync 2013 client with OCS 2007 R2 Edge server

    Hi,
We have OCS 2007 R2 Edge server for external & OCS 2007 R2 FE Server for internal access in our environment.
We able to access internally Lync2013 clients with OCS 2007R2 server, however from external we cannot access Lync2013 client with OCS2007 R2 server.
Is there any patch or registry key trick to access OCS from lync2013 client externally? We cannot immediately migrate to Lync2013 server from OCS.
    Any help
    MD

    Hi,
I suggest you still use OCS 2007 R2 client to login OCS 2007 R2 Server untill finishing migration to Lync Server 2013, as using Lync client with OCS 2007 R2 Server will offer a pretty limited experience.
Here is a great blog about Lync 2010 Client unsupported with OCS, it is for Lync 2010 client but similar for Lync 2013 client:

  • Lync 2013 Enterprise load balancing on the front end and edge pool

    Hi,
I am setting up a Lync 2013 Enterprise deployment consisting of a Front End pool (x2 FE servers) and an Edge pool (x2 Edge servers).  I'm seeing some conflicting advice regarding load balancing using hardware or DNS for the front end and the edge.
On the front end I have 2 internal DNS records 'lyncfepool1.contoso.local' each of which map to one of the IPs of the FE servers.  I've used my details to populate the Detailed Design Planner excel spreadsheet and am told that I require a HLB to load
balance my front end pool.  I'm aware of the need to load balance HTTPS traffic internally (which will be done by TMG) however other traffic to the front end (SIP, etc) can be balanced by DNS only, and not require a HLB?
Can someone clarify the front end requirement?
Also - looking now at the edge pool - this site again have two edge servers in a pool.  We are using a total of six private IP addresses, two per edge service (2 x av.contoso.com, 2 x sip.contoso.com and 2 x webcon.contoso.com).  These will be
NAT'ed by the external firewall and directed to the respective external (DMZ) IP addresses on the Edge servers on port 443.  I know this isn't true roundrobin due to the intelligence of the Lync client when connecting (in that the Lync client will connect
to one of the public IPs and if it can't connect, it will know to connect to the other service IP), however I want to clarify this set up, particularly the need to direct the external public IP traffic at the DMZ Edge IP specified in the topology builder.
I've attached a basic diagram of the external/DMZ/Edge side which hopefully helps with this question
    Persevere, Persevere, Per..

That is because you will always need HLB for a front-end server since it hosts the Lync webservices which use HTTP/HTTPS traffic.
The description on the calculation tool also describes this correctly:
Supports Standard and Enterprise pools (up to 12 nodes), with pure device-based load balancing or a combination of DNS load balancing and device-based load balancing (for
    Lync web services)
You can use either Hardware or DNS loadbalancing for SIP traffic only, but you will always need a HLB for the webservices.  Both are applicable for the Front-End so you have either
full HLB for both SIP and HTTP(S) traffic
DNS LB for SIP traffic and HLB for HTTP(S) traffic
Hope this is more clear :-)

  • Lync 2010 client connecting to 2013 persistent chat server

Since we never had Group Chat in our 2010 environment, I have no idea how it works and now that we have 2013 Persistent Chat, I am struggling with getting the Lync 2010 connected. The 2013 client works just fine as it is integrated into the client. I found
out Lync 2010 needs a separate Chat client to run along side the IM client.
I installed this client but from there I have no idea how to connect it to the 2013 Chat server. I created the endpoint on the Lync 2013 server according to the article
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/jj204901.aspx but something else needs to be done. I just don't know what. Not even sure where to start looking. Many of our Lync clients have
to use 2010 because the OS is XP so I need to find out how to get these users to work with Persistent Chat.
I am not sure what the point is of creating the End point according to the article. I am sure its necessary but not sure how it fits into the clients using it to connect. What does the article mean when it says "Next, configure Persistent Chat clients
to use that SIP address as their contact object". Do you need Group Chat functioning in 2010 for this to even work?
The problem is we never had Group Chat with 2010 so I am sure there are some settings missing like DNS records etc...

If you have users running legacy clients (such as Microsoft Lync 2010 these users might find the default Persistent Chat URIs difficult to work with and difficult to use when pointing their legacy client towards the pool. Because of this,
administrators need to use the New-CsPersistentChatEndpoint cmdlet to create an additional contact object for the pool, a contact object that provides a friendlier, easier-to-use URI.

  • Unable to search GAL on Lync 2013 Front End Pool through Lync 2013 client

I'm in the beginning of a 2010 to 2013 migration and I'm currently testing co-existence functionality between pools.  I've noticed that users cannot search the GAL from their Lync client after being moved to the 2013 pool.
When trying to access the internal URL https://fepool13.domain.com/abs/handler the user is prompted to login and after three failed attempts, receives "401 - Unauthorized: Access is denied due to invalid credentials.  You do not have permission
to view this directory or page using the credentials that you supplied".
Searching withing a Lync 2010 or Lync 2013 client returns no results, but there are no errors as well as nothing in the event logs or tracing folder regarding not being able to search.
The 2010 pool has been in production for a few years now and when accessing its internal ABS URL https://fepool10.domain.com/abs/handler the user is granted access after a successful login.
In the IIS logs there are slightly more detailed 401 error codes, but I’m not sure what to make of them.
The rtcab database appears to have user information and all three front end servers appear to be syncing with active directory.  I say the rtcab database appears to have user info because the AbUserEntry table is filled with User ID'd, GUID's and a
    bunch of other stuff.
The authentication on 2013 front end servers “internal lync website/abs/handler” is set to 1. Negotiate, 2. Ntlm - which is the same as the 2010 front end servers.
    Any ideas?

    Hi,
Which step did you do among migration from Lync Server 2010 to Lync Server 2013?
Did you already move CMS from Lync Server 2010 to Lync Server 2013?

  • Lync 2013 client switches connection after a VPN connection

have read that if you are working remote, it's better to go through the Edge server instead of establishing a VPN connectionn first before starting Lync. Reason is VPN is encrypted and so is Lync traffic so the double encryption will tend to slow
things down. When I work remote, I fire up Lync first and make a connection to the Edge server. After that, I establish a VPN tunnel to work to access network drives etc....
In about 5-10 minutes, my Lync client disconnects and then immediately reconnects but this time its connecting directly to an internal FE over the VPN which is what I don't want. Any idea on how to keep this from happening? Its not causing a major problems
at this time but we are just doing IM right now. Once conferencing starts, it could be an issue.

    Hi Shadowtuck,
Have a read through this guide on how to stop this from happening:
    http://blogs.technet.com/b/nexthop/archive/2011/11/15/enabling-lync-media-to-bypass-a-vpn-tunnel.aspx
Basically, the overview of this is to:
Split tunnel the traffic, so the Lync traffic continues to flow via the Internet
Block the Lync traffic from going over the VPN
Configure DNS pinpoint entries so that when VPN'd in the Lync client resolves the external Edge IP addresses.

  • Lync 2013 client - Set people to "Blocked Contacts" relationship by default?

We are in the process of implementing Lync Server 2013 (on-premises). We have already implemented one front end pool and one edge pool and successfully tested the basic functionality.  Now we are moving on to configuring the various policies based
on our requirements. One requirement that has come late in the planning is to prevent people from receiving IMs unless they explicitly allow people to IM them and to have the ability to whitelist IMs from people on an individual basis.  This is a feature
that was submitted as a requirement by way of our IT HelpDesk manager.
From what I gather, this could be accomplished if someone had the ability to set the default to the "Blocked Contacts" relationship for everyone instead of "Colleagues".  In my research on how to set that as the default, I found
a setting "ShowManagePrivacyRelationship" in Set-CsClientPolicy.  I created a new per-user client policy called "TEST" and applied it to myself.  Then I set ShowManagePrivacyRelationShip to $true via PowerShell on the TEST policy.
However, even hours after making the change and signing out and back into the Lync 2013 client, I still don't see any change in functionality or new options.
Now, if I instead sign in with the Lync 2010 client, I can indeed see a "Manage Privacy Relationships" option in a drop-down near the right side of the client which takes me to a view where I can see and move "People in my company" and
"People in domains connected to my company" pseudo-contacts from the "Colleagues" relationship to "Blocked Contacts" and this accomplishes exactly what we want to do.
Where can I find the "Manage Privacy Relationship" setting in Lync 2013 client?  If there is no setting called that, how can I accomplish what I am trying to do using Lync 2013?
I would rather not use the Lync 2010 client, as our HelpDesk technicians all use Windows 8.1 and Office 2013.

    David:
Yes, I have all of those relationships categories in Lync 2013.  What I am missing is the ability to set the rest of the organization to
Blocked Contacts by default.  I can do this with the Lync 2010 client using the same user login and the same Lync Server 2013 environment.
The following image demonstrates the location of the Manage Privacy Relationships option I would like to leverage in Lync 2013.  The image is of the Lync 2010 client.
    https://www.dropbox.com/s/i0g83i9su9e5zox/Manage_Privacy_Relationships.png
If I click that Manage Privacy Relationships option, I end up on the following screen.  Note that there is a
People in my company object under Colleagues.
    https://www.dropbox.com/s/kkatgtoexea7evt/Default_Privacy_Relationships.png
I am able to move that People in my company object to another relationship option.  I moved it to
Blocked Contacts, as you can see below.
    https://www.dropbox.com/s/956kw0ih15uksgr/People_In_Company_Blocked.png
As you can see in the following image, after making this change if I do not have a person on my Contacts list, they are unable to IM me.  As you can see in my Lync 2013 client relationships list, no one is in my
Blocked Contacts list yet the Lync Test Account is being blocked due to the fact that I put People in my company there and haven't added them to my Contacts list.
    https://www.dropbox.com/s/cue09wjj8tidbau/Blocked.png
After adding the Lync Test Account to my Contacts list, the Lync Test Account is able to IM me.
    https://www.dropbox.com/s/nalju5ia980lc30/Unblocked.png
I hope these images help make clear that there seems to be a capability present in the Lync 2010 client that I am unable to locate in the Lync 2013 client.  I can't find this
Manage Private Relationships option anywhere in the Lync 2013 client or any other option that lets me see those People in my company and People in domains connected with my company objects.
With regards to the EnablePrivacyMode option, I am already aware of it and that is not what we are looking for.

  • Lync 2013 Std and Ent Edition Edge co-existence

    Hi all,
I'm seeing an odd issue with our current migration. We have the following:
Site1: Lync 2013 Standard with Edge server.
Site 2: Lync 2013 EE with 3 FEs, mirrored DBs and no Edge server deployed
All users live on Site1 and all is ok. Site 1 contains the CMS & PChat DB's
I'm re-using the current Edge server in Site1 as I need to retain the same URLs at the moment - the long term plan will be to build up a new Edge pool in Site2 once Site1 has been decommed.
I'm planning to move a bunch of pilot users onto Site 2 in the next week, but I see the following issues when I move a couple of test accounts into the pool:
Can't start a "meet now" conference
    Can't expand Disti Lists
Can't search for contacts - addressbook never seems to download
    Can't see federated contacts
P2P IM & AV works fine.
Client logging from a user in the new EE pool shows the following errors when try to communicate with a federated partner:
    ms-diagnostics: 1038;reason="Failed to connect to a peer server";fqdn="standardserver.corp.domain.local:5062";ip-address="172.20.130.32";peer-type="InternalServer";winsock-code="10061";winsock-info="The
peer actively refused the connection attempt";source="FEPool.corp.domain.local"
My initial thoughts that its something to do with firewalling but I can ping & telnet from the old Front End and Edge over to the new FE pool (which are geographically separated and on different subnets) so I would have thought media should be able to
flow between the 2 sites without a problem. The FE pool has a HLB sitting in front of it.
I can also see our Exchange server ok from the new FE pool too.
Looking for any suggestions on what else I can look at.

    Hi,
From your description, did you mean you don’t move anything from Standard pool to Enterprise pool (just move test users to Enterprise pool to test the function)?
Did you test internal or external of your corporation?
Please create a new Lync account on Lync 2013 Enterprise pool to check if the issue also happen.
Please check if CMS replication has update to the latest status with the help of following cmdlet:
    Get-CsManagementStoreReplicationStatus.
If the status not to the latest status, you can invoke by the following cmdlet:
    Invoke-CsManagementStoreReplication

  • Lync Edge Server 2013 Setup

    Hi,
I am planning to deploy 1 Lync Edge Server but the problem is we only have one public IP address. This will be deployed on a Hyper-V VM with 2 NICS installed. All tutorials I have read pertains on having 3 public IP address. The purpose is only to try Skype
federation. Our Front Edge currently works well internally. Is there any way I can deploy an Edge Server with only one Public IP?
    Thanks,
    -Ed-

    Hi Ed,
Although it is best practice to use 3 public IPs for your Edge deployment, you can indeed use just a single public IP - this is a completely supported configuration.
The reason for using 3 public IPs is so that all three Edge services (Access, AV, Conf) can all use port 443 without any conflict. If you choose to use a single IP like you suggest, then naturally these three services can't all use 443.
When you are deploying your new Edge server and configuring it in the Topology Builder, there will come a point where it will ask you if you want to use a single IP for all services. If you choose to do so, you will see that it will automatically change
the Edge services to use varying ports (5061,443,444) instead of all on 443.
Deployment of your Edge will allow external clients to sign in. However, keep in mind that external access and functionality is two part, and the deployment of a reverse proxy is required to allow mobile client sign-in and a vast array of other features
    including;
    • Allows external users to download meeting content for your meetings.
    • Allows external users to expand distribution groups.
    • Allows remote users to download files from the Address Book service.
    • Allows access via the Lync Web App client.
    • Provides access to the Dial-in Conferencing Settings webpage.
    • Provides access to the Location Information service.
    • Provides external devices access to the Device Update web service.
    • Enables Lync mobile applications to discover and use the mobility URLs
    • Allows Lync 2013 clients to leverage Lync Discover URLs
Importantly, your Reverse Proxy will also need a public IP.
In short, you can gain limited external connectivity with a single public IP, but if you want a FULL external feature set you will need 2 public IPs at the very least.
You cannot collocate the reverse proxy with the Edge, or use the same IP for both.
    Hope that helps.
    Kind regards
    Ben

  • Lync 2013 Standard, publishing externally via edge/TMG

    Hi
I am looking into implementing lync into our environment and have been considering using lync standard in the following setup
total users will be 3000 so thinking of placing 1500 on each server at primary site A and then pairing them with the servers at site B we will only really be using this for IM and Presence. The Primary site will be where all the users are located and only
in DR will we failover to the DR site.
    Site A (Primary)

    1x FEA2 1xBEA2
    1x FEedgeA1
    Site B (DR)
    1xFEB1 1xBEB1
    1xFEB2 1xBEB2
    1xFEedgeB1
    my questions are this
    1. If we have two servers in site A each with a separate pool because they are standard, how many external URLS will I have to have if I am connecting using a Iphone using the lync client?
    2. If a server goes down in site A and we fail the users over to site B what will happen to the Iphone users how will they connect back onto lync does this require the users to enter a new URL?
    3. does Lync edge server require a public IP address and should its internal address be an IP on the DMZ or the internal LAN?
    4. do you need TMG/ARR/WAP to reverse proxy lync or can Lync edge do this on its own for Iphone devices wanting to use IM?
    5. In the standard lync model is the backend server a role or a separate server or can it be both, above I have listed as separate servers but was not sure if this could be a role on the FE?
    thanks in advance
    J

    Hello,
    Please find the answers below;
Each Lync pool need to publish external web service URL. Simple URLs can be shared between pools. So you need to publish meet ; dialin , lyncdiscover and webextA1 and webextA2. I assume , your sip domain remains the same for all pools.
In a DR scenario , you will have to make external DNS changes and repoint Lyncdiscover record to site B reverse proxy server.
Yes, edge server require public IP address. Internal edge IP address should be reachable from user VLAN. So internal IP should be fine.
Reverse proxy is required for mobility connectivity.
Lync standard edition backend database will be installed on the same box.
    Thanks

  • Lync 2013 Clients, video applied bandwidth limit source

We have a single Lync 2013 Std server and single Lync 2013 Std edge server.
Clients are Lync 2013 with latest Office updates.
Clients connected via 1Gbps switch ports to each other and the Lync server, all on the same subnet.
Video calls between clients are having a low bandwidth limit applied to them, usually
    Applied bandwidth limit: 350 Kbps
    Applied bandwidth source: PreferenceValue
This of course limits the video quality, often to 480x240 15FPS.
Clients are Core i7, 2 cores (4 threads), support H264 acceleration (Intel HD Video 4000) and have WinRSAT Video Encode Score of 7.4
CSMediaConfiguration has MaxVideoRateAllowed set to Hd720p15M, CSConferencingPolicy has VideoRateKb set to 50000
What is the "preference value" and where is it coming from?

    Hi,
AppliedBandwidthLimit - This is the actual bandwidth applied to the given send side stream given various policy settings (TURN, API, SDP, Policy Server, and so on). This is not to be confused with the effective bandwidth because there can be a lower effective
bandwidth based on the bandwidth estimate. This is basically the maximum bandwidth the send stream can take barring limits imposed by the bandwidth estimate.

    Hi
The solution is to do a ‘repair’ install of Office 2013.  This will reregister the needed components and the popups will stop.
A repair install can be done from ‘Programs and Features’, highlight Office 2013 and click ‘Change’.  When the install wizard appears, choose the ‘repair’ option.
