M-audio 49e versus 61e???

I'm trying to decide whether to get the m-audio 49e versus 61e keystation. Using it to compose music into GarageBand as well as into Finale Songwriter or Sibelius. I'm an amatuer musician who plays the piano. Anybody had any experience with these keyboards that can give me some information on them? Are you findng 49 keys is enough and what about the semi-weighted keys on the 61? What do folks think?

I'm in a similar position and decided to go with the 61. That extra octave made a difference because, at least when I was just improvising and exploring, I kept running out of keys on the 49. It still happens to me occasionally on the 61 but I don't have room for (or the money for) 88... The semi-weighted keys took a little getting used to because they feel like organ keys but if you set the keyboard sensitivity (in GB) to a higher level than default it becomes surprisingly expressive.

  • Digital Audio Interface versus Speakers in Vi

Just got a new Soundblaster Audigy SE to replace my onboard sound.
I installed everything and now I am wondering for the sounds, should I make the Digital Audio Interface as my default for output or should I just do speakers.
I am currently using the Vista OS.

Are your speakers connected to a digital?external receiver or digital? Did you have it connect to a coaxial or optical input on your speakers, or digital din?

  • M-audio 49e Keystation new lead required

    Hello
I have just upgraded to a MacBook Pro after having used a G4 Powerbook for six years. I am having trouble finding a new lead for my old 49e Keystation as the new laptop uses the 800 firewire usb port as opposed to the old 400 port. I have found a 400/800 data transfer here at apple store but the Keystation has a different output port.
    Any help would be appreciated.

you are confusing ports, there is no such thing as a "firewire usb" port, there is a FireWire 800 port, AND 2 USB ports, use one of the USB ports (the 49e only has a USB port, no FireWire)

  • M-Audio Keystation 49e not recognized

I am trying to use an M-Audio Keystation 49e, USB. It does not come up on the USB bus as a connected device. The power light comes on so I know the USB connection is there. I also connected it to the keyboard of my old iMac and got an error that it was drawing too much power. What am I doing wrong?

I have the exact same problem. The M-Audio 49e will not work on Macs for some reason. I have tried another MIDI keyboard on my Mac and it worked fine. My 49e will light up also when connected, but it won't work with any program on Macs for some reason. It works fine on my PC.

  • Low volume using M-Audio keyboard and GB

    Hi:
Using an M-Audio Keyboard 61es keyboard (MIDI controller actually) with Garage Band 09. The volume is very low - basically need to turn everything up to max or close to it. Anyone else have this experience or any hints?
    Thanks
    Using a late 2010 15" i7 macPro

I'm having what I believe to be the same problem with a different, but I assume very similar, keyboard: an M-Audio 49e. I tried raising the volume in the settings suggested by the website, which do raise the volume, but the volume slider in the main work area on the track always defaults to around 1/3 full volume –– incredibly frustrating. I feel like this has something to do with the volume slider on the keyboard itself, which I remember was functional with earlier version of GarageBand, but not with this one. I do not think that that solution has actually solved this problem, and I know that many others are having it as well.

  • M-Audio Piano Pedal Fails To Work?

Beginning with Garageband 3, my M-Audio SP-2 Piano Pedal now works in reverse (used with my M-Audio 49e keyboard). Depressing the pedal now stops a note; leaving the pedal up now lets the notes sustain; the exact opposite of the way it should work, and the way it DID work with GarageBand 2.
    Please advise; this hurts.

Someone over at the MacAddict Forum got better results searching M-Audio's FAQ than I did. To whit:
    "Sustain Pedal polarity, Keystation Pro88, 88es, 61es, 49e, O2
Q: I have plugged a sustain pedal into my new Keystation*, but it works the wrong way round.
A: The polarity of the sustain pedal is determined by the keyboard when it is powered up. On power up, the sustain pedal is assumed to be in the OFF position. So, if you want the sustain pedal to be off when it is unpressed, make sure the pedal is unpressed when you power up.
If the sustain pedal works "the wrong way around" although the pedal wasn't pressed on power-up, turn the Keystation Pro88 off again and then power it on while holding the sustain pedal down. This will reverse it's polarity.

  • Audio tracks: lock vs disconnect?

Hi, all. I'm new to iMac and FCE Express. I'm not sure I understand the functional difference between locking the audio tracks versus disconnecting them. Don't both functions do the same thing?
    Thanks,
    Jeff

Yes, I guess I'm referring to the patch panel.
So you're saying that if I UNpatch, say, an audio track, and I have a clip in the Viewer that has both video AND audio, moving it to the timeline with the UNpatched audio track will move the video portion only, and not the new clip's audio?
I'm sorry, I don't mean to be an idiot about all this. I think I understand the concept of LOCKING and UNLOCKING the tracks in the timeline. I'm just not getting the whole thing of PATCHING and UNPATCHING tracks, and when patching and unpatching is to be used instead of locking and unlocking. It's a mental block of some sort??
    Thanks,
    Jeff

  • Express and M-Audio Keystation

I Just got an 49e Keystation usb keyboard. Im using Logic Express and I not sure how to get the sounds i record to play back. It show that it is playing but there is no sound. can someone please help me

    Hi loztchyld,
I have an M-Audio 49e, and it works perfectly with Logic Express, so don't despair. I assume since you see the input from the 49e in the Logic transporter window (right?), that you have run the Audio midi setup application in Utilities to install the 49e, that it appears in that window, that you have run the setup assistant for LE and that it shows the 49e as a connected device (right?).
The 49e is used to input notes as an 'AudioInstrument' so you have to create and audio instrument track for it to do it on, say a Steinway piano. Having done that, the track can not be muted, no other track can be solo'd, the volume phaser has to be turned up, your speakers have to be working, the volume slider on the 49e has to be slid at least half way up, say. That's what I can think of off the bat. You might check that the Audio Drivers in the Logic Preferences>Audio is set to Built in Audio. See if any of that works.
    Good luck,
    Ray

  • GarageBand and M-Audio device

Sorry to ask the most basic of questions BUT, have just got the M-Audio 49e Key Station as a gift. Works great through GarageBand - but would work better if I could play it correctly. So am looking for a simple on screen tutorial to teach me to play the keyboard properly and ideally via GarageBand.
Would welcome any thoughts or guidance.

Playing a keyboard is not a good thing to learn on GarageBand. I would recommend, as I have done, getting Practica Musica and learn how to play the keyboard as a keyboard and then apply your knowledge to the keyboard by playing wha you now "know" in GarageBand. It is a painless program to use and you will definitely learn. I love Practica Musica and would recommend it to ANYONE wanting to LEARN to play a keyboard.

  • Low signal using M-Audio Fastrack

    Hi all,
Hoping you can help. I have an M-audio Fasttrack USB connected to an iMac G5. When I plug an electric guitar into the line input I get a very limited signal comming into the mac. • Battlefield 2 audio setti

I have a vreati've xtreme gamer x-fi card and when I enable x-fi in the audio options, I get pretty bad crackling noises in the background. Now, when I set the audio settings to "hardware", the crackling noises disappear. Does anyone know what the difference is between the "x-fi" audio options versus the "hardware" option, they both sound the same? what features am I disabling by not picking the X-FI option? Keep in mind EAX is enabled for both settings and of couse the sound card is also the same.Message Edited by LeonDeGamme on 05-22-2008 02:0 PM

one of the first suggestions I tied (and tried a few more times after) was to replace the openal.dll file in the game. This fix actually worked for another game that had this same crackling problem but unfortunately it didn't work for this game. I think I have tried all the possible solutions for this and come to the conclusion that the only real?fix is to try a new motherboard because the creative card in incompatible with alot of motherboards. Oh, and I have tried both speakers and headphones. I have tried my logitech surround sound speakers and my generic cheap stereo speakers.Message Edited by LeonDeGamme on 05-25-2008 2:2 PM

  • 49e Keyboard Freeze

OK, I'm going straight to M-Audio after I post this. There are no driver updates from M-Audio for my 49e.
My M-Audio 49e keyboard works fine until I start using either my mod wheel or my pitch wheel. Between 5-15 seconds of usage, the keyboard will freeze (thus playing the current note or chord continuously) and will no longer respond to input. The only way I can regain control is to shut off the keyboard, then restart it.
    Any clues?

There are no driver updates from M-Audio for my 49e.
AFAIK there is no driver for the 49e: it is class-compliant, which means that it works as soon as you plug it in.
Since you can play notes the MIDI connection obviously works: is there any way you can try the keyboard with another computer?

  • M audio confusion

Hi. I am using a m audio 49e MIDI controller with Logic Express 9. It has been working fine up until this point, but when I try to record a new track or play another "instrument" along with what I have, the commands from my controller are either very delayed or do not work at all. Help?

I've just bought the 24" iMac Intel Core Duo and am having the same problem with it not recognising my M-Audio 410 Firewiere interface.
Did using the external power supply help the problem. During set up I also had my iPod connected and now it seems like it's fried........ no sign of life and it's worked fine for two years until I plugged in my new computer.
    Please help .....

  • Recording a trumpet?

    Hi all,
My young son is developing into a decent trumpet player and recently discovered Garageband on my Mac. I now routinely catch him fiddling with loops and developing his own sort of jazz tunes. I'm actually pretty pleased to find him applying what music theory he has learned in this fashion and want to encourage him.
I have an M-Audio 49e hiding in my car trunk for a holiday surprise to help him with input. But I can imagine that at some point he may want to record his own playing (maybe to combine with some jazz drum loops).
Since I have the sneaking suspicion that at some point I may have to get him his own Mac, I would like a reasonably priced suggestion for recording his trumpet. I suppose a decent microphone + preamp?
Any and all suggestions would be greatly appreciated-- I'm not a musician myself, but I am really pleased that he is showing such interest.
    Thanks,
    Jil
    Quad 2.5 Ghz G5, 17 1.5 Ghz PB, 800 Mhz G4 Cube

    What a great FAQ!
For now I will let the little guy use my new Quad G5 and it has been optimized for video/Photoshop with 2 large 7200 RPM drives and 7 GB RAM. The only "problem" is that he might get spoiled a bit.
I would like to proceed in steps because I want to make sure that he is really interested in the whole process before making large investments -- I like the idea of a Firewire-based or USB interface for the preamp because it can be easily transferred to his own Mac if we decide to go that way. I could probably go with one of the M-Audio offerings to start. I have the PCI 2496 in one of the other machines and have had good luck with it.
I'm pretty undecided about the microphone. I suppose a real "simple" approach (probably one step up from the ibook + built-in mic) would be to let him start out with one of the low end USB mics and see what he thinks. If this really gets him going then move to a preamp + "real" mic.
And at that point I will probably start looking an an iMac or refurbed Dual G5.
What I like about GB is that he seemed to take to the interface very naturally, I basically showed him what little I knew and then left him alone for awhile -- came back to find him fine-tuning his "Ode to Percussion" with 4-5 tracks and having a ball. He's only 11, probably the perfect age to catch the "bug" -- if he wants to move to Logic or one of the other big guns by high school I have no problem with setting him up. I will have to do some reading as well to try to get a handle on things.
Does this sound like a reasonable progression?

  • MIDI CONTROLLERS WHICH ONE WOULD YOU CHOSE AND WHY?

    Between M-Audio 8v2 , M-Audio 02 , M-AUDIO 49E and M-Audio axiom 25. Which one of these would you choose and why?

    The Axiom 25.
For the rotary encoders, pads and memory.
I'd take this over the 49 because both of the keyboards will be pitiful and your better of getting a full size board with hammer action if its about the "piano" feel. These things are great to have at hand when fiddling with synths while setting up in logic.
