M-audio axiom midi controller

just wondering if anyone out there can walk me through a couple things re: learning the axiom midi controller. works great with garage band but there are some things i'm having trouble figuring out.

GarageBand's control messages are non-standard (they would be, wouldn't they). These are the control messages you need to send for each transport function - the first is when the key is pressed, the second when it is released - possibly just the first would do.
All sent on Channel 1 (I think probably any channel would do):
RECORD
Controller 106 127
Controller 106 0
Controller 107 127
Controller 107 0
SKIP BACK
Controller 108 127
Controller 108 0
PLAY
Controller 109 127
Controller 109 0
SKIP FORWARD
Controller 110 127
Controller 110 0
CYCLE
Controller 111 127
Controller 111 0
JOG FORWARD
Controller 24 1
JOG BACKWARD
Controller 24 127
The control messages for the channel level, pan, etc. are way non-standard - they use things like the breath control instructions - and I think that trying to use the Axiom to do mixing would be very difficult. The only controller that works well for all GB's functions is the iControl, designed specifically for it (but of course you still can't do automated mixing in any case, you can only do that by dragging the automation curves).

  • Advice Needed for Audio and MIDI Controller Software

I am hoping someone may be able to give me advice on how I should approach my problem.
I am currently running a live show with audio backing tracks and a small 12 par lighting system. The light system can be controlled via standard MIDI. I am using iTunes to play back sets of backing tracks, and manually controlling the lighting system using a dedicated foot controller.
What I would like to do, is be able to use software to simultaneously play audio files and perfectly sync the lighting (fades, shots, etc. via midi) with the audio track. Ideally, I would be able to have the audio/lighting paired as discreet entities that could be grouped into sets.
    i.e.
    Audio-MIDI_1 = Audiotrack1 would always be paired with Lightcontroller_MIDI_events1
    Audio-MIDI_2 = Audiotrack2 would always be paired with Lightcontroller_MIDI_events2
    Audio-MIDI_3 = Audiotrack3 would always be paired with Lightcontroller_MIDI_events3
I could the create a set of Audio-MIDI_x tracks which could be triggered in any order.
I would like to have to option to be able to activate a single track, or have a complete group of tracks activated sequentially (but be able to stop the and start the group as needed - you never know what will happen in a live situation). It would be nice to have a time-line UI as well.
Now the final requirement: it should be able to run on a PISMO PowerBook. <cringe>
I hope I am not too confusing.
I am thinking MainStage would not be the software for this task as Leo is not an option for the Powerbook.
I have looked at QLab and showcontrolpro, but I don't think theses are right for me either.
Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
    TIA

    Gary,
With a Pismo you really are confined. I've been using some software from Alien Apparatus called Solo Performer Show Controller (www.alienapparatus.com) and it has a timeline to sequence lights where you can run 32 channels of midi or dmx lighting. The only setback is it needs at least a 1 GHZ processor. There may be a company like Sonnet that has an upgrade for your processor.
The software is able to run backing tracks, send midi controls to effects units or other software, send hotkeys for apps, synchronize lyrics in a window or on an external monitor, controls a dmx fog machine, and also has a six button usb foot controller which can be configured for many things such as scrolling your songlist to select the next song, change volume of tracks, change a light scene, send a hotkey, trigger samples, etc. It is a bit pricey at just under 600 dollars but the foot control is durable, the company has excellent support and they listen to users to add features to the software.
    Hope this helps
    Thor

  • Sending audio samples to midi controller

i have logic pro 8 and i was wondering how to send chopped up samples of an audio file to my midi controller which is an axiom 49. for example, i wanna chop up some vocals and instrument loops from a song called dazed and confused to create a hip hop song and i ve seen it done before on youtube just wondering how to do it.

Not sure what you mean by sending audio samples to your MIDI controller. Maybe you'd like to play or trigger these samples from your controller? One way is to cut them up (lots of ways to do this in Logic) and then assign the resultant bits of audio as samples in the EXS sample player. You can also assign these samples in Ultrabeat.
You'll need a basic familiarity with editing in Logic, as well as some fundamental knowledge of the EXS sampler or Ultrabeat.

  • M-Audio Axiom 25 Keyboard Controller

I am thinking of buying this keyboard as M=Audio says it compatible with GB. However, some research shows that people are having problems making the drum keypads work as well as the rotary controllers. Is anyone familiar with this midi controller or can you recommend a product that will work well.

The Axiom series is not fully compatible with GB. The rotaries and transport buttons on the 25 as well as the sliders on the 49 & 61 will not work as GB has no customizable MIDI mapping options. The pads do work although I have never bothered to use mine and therefore look into programming the axioms pads with note numbers.
If you are wanting control over the sliders and rotaries with a keyboard all built in then its the M-Audio Oxygen series you want to look into.
I personally like my Axiom for most things. IMHO I think it is important to look beyond GarageBand when buying a MIDI controller as sooner or later you will more than likely look into other DAWs that are a bit more sophisticated and buying twice always hurts.
    All the best.

I just checked to see if the update to OS X Yosemite 10.10.1 solved any of the issues outlined in my previous post, and to my dismay, nothing has changed -- all of the previous problems persist.
My iMac (8) -- it's renamed itself eight times since the recent troubleshoot with the Apple tech rep -- shows up as a shared device in Finder on my MacBook Pro, but when I click on it, I cannot establish a connection using "Connect As".  So I've attempted to connect using the menu "Go/Connect to Server...", using both (alternately) the iMac's name and IP address, to no avail.  I get a message which reads: "There was a problem connecting to the server 'Peter's iMac (8)'. This server may not exist or it is unavailable at this time.  Check the server name or IP address, check your network connection, and then try again."
    Here's what I know:
    The server -- Peter's iMac (8) does exist;
    The server -- Peter's iMac (8) is available at this time;
    The server name -- Peter's iMac (8) -- is correct, as specified in the system sharing preferences;
    The server IP address is correct, as specified in the system sharing preferences;
The network connection is active when I attempt to connect.
I'm convinced the problems stem directly from the OS X Yosemite update.  None of this was ever remotely an issue in the previous OS X's -- any of them.  This is maddening!  What can be done?  Apple?? Anyone???

  • Midi controller / audio interface

hi - After years of working with Cubase on a PC, i have become a brand new mac convert and have just invested in a macbook pro with logic express.
I am looking for recommendations for getting midi in & out of the computer as well as a good audio interface. I play keyboards and will use an external midi sound module for sounds so midi latency (as near as possible to zero) is important as is audio quality and I am looking to buy a new midi controller keyboard. Am i right in thinking that the new breed of keyboards will act as the midi interface too?
Finally if there are any good "starting out" reading resources you can point me to that would be greatfully appreciated!
    thanks

    Hi Alex,
    Welcome to the Forum!
You already have the solution on the back of your mind,
Most midi keyboard controllers can be pluged via USB to your computer, and act as a midi interface for other modules too,
some of them also have an audio input.
As you don't state any buget, my only advice will go to the audio interface,
each one has it's own preferences, and I'm sure it's going to rain answer on that matter; go for an Firewire interface to audio (USB's weak), also take a look at your internal HD (I believe it's an 5400rpm drive) you need and external HD 7200rpm in that case for audio.
Finally, if the resources you looking are about Le, instead of reading
the best I fiound to date is Martin Sitter's videos:

  • Re: ERROR while trying to synchronize Audio and MIDI

    Hi Guys/Gals
A bit of a strange one. Yes, I have posted a similar question concerning my trusted 2.7ghz G5 PPC and my Digidesign 003R which it turned out that the Digi's FW ports were to blame.
New issue. I have just completed an install on a client's machine, here's it's specs etc:
    Hardware:
iMac 2.8Ghz Duo Core Intel, 4Gb ram, 500Gb HD etc (the custom top end before last week's upgrade) arrived last week. Running Leopard 10.5.2 and has all the latest updates. (firmware/software)
Apogee Ensemble (with newest firmware update/upgrade)
Iomega ULTRAMAX HARD DRIVE 1TB USB 2.0/FIREWIRE® 400/800 (sorry, copied from their site)
    M-Audio Axiom 49 USB Midi controller/keyboard
    Software:
Logic Pro 8 (latest 8.0.1) All standard plugs/samples, no third parties at all, just 100% Apple install.
    Reason 4 (latest 4.0.1)
I reformatted the built-in hd to two partitions of equal size, one for the OS and one for whatever. I formated the external terrabyte into two partitions also of equal size, non are journalized, all are GUI partitions. I copied the LP 8 demos to both the internal "spare" partition and to the primary "Audio1" partition of the external drive. The Iomega HD is connected via the 800FW port and the Apogee Ensemble is connected via the 400FW port (the iMac has one of each). If I play any of the demo songs from the internal partition, they play perfectly, if I play them off the external Iomega partitions (either) within 8 bars I get:
"Error while trying to synchronize Audio and MIDI
    Sample Rate 45946 recognized.
Check conflict between Logic Pro and external device."
As I said, any demo played back from the internal drives absolutely perfectly..... Any ideas?
    Cheers!!

There are a lot of different opinions about partitioning in Mac OS X and you can read some of them here:
    http://forums.cnet.com/5208-7592_102-0.html?forumID=25&threadID=44865&messageID= 530144
    and here
    http://forums.appleinsider.com/archive/index.php/t-8096.html
My opinion is that partitions cam be useful when:
    1. the OS can't manage big volumes (as it was in the past)
    2. the OS can't optimize the space on big volumes
    3. want to install 2 or more separate OSes
    4. organization (like in your case).
Now, OS X filesystem (HFS+) is robust and reliable and OS X is a multitasking system that parallelizes I/O operations like reading or writing a disk.
So if you have 2 separate hard disk the system can parallelize the operations (i.e. reading from one and writing into another one) but if you have 2 partitions the system (or better the disk subsystem) have to jump back and forth among the partitions.
About the linking schema of the Audio interfaces and the FW hard disks it can change: I connect my FW disk to the MOTU and the MOTU to the mac while a friend of mine have to put the disk before of his Presonus.
    Thanks for the beer!
    cheers

  • Advice on Midi Controller

I want to upgrade my current midi/keyboard controller, and would like to know which keyboard/controller you use that auto maps to logic pro 8. My current Edirol midi controller worked great with Reason (no mapping required), but ***** with Logic pro 8. I have to manually assign knobs and faders which is a daunting task. The three midi controllers I'm looking at are: Akai Professional MPK61 USB MIDI Keyboard Controller, Novation 49SL MkII Keyboard Controller, and M-Audio Axiom Pro 49 USB/MIDI Controller. If anyone has information, please let me know!
    Thanks!

As far as the Novation is concerned, Automap is getting better with each update.
All the Logic plugs/instruments are pre mapped, but you may not like the schemes. Remapping is easy though, just takes time.
With Automap up to v3.4 you had to have a continuous C-2 note off message in the transport. Not a big deal but drove some people nuts. With v3.7 that is finally gone, but now the tap tempo is disabled . You can still tap tempo on the keyboard and get the readout, but it does not communicate this back to Logic.
I think the drum pads and the XY control pad thing (not the joystick - the laptop control type of deal) are almost useless on the Novation.
There is a big difference in the feel of the keys between the Axiom and the Novation. If you are a player this could be an issue for you. Novation feels more 'keyboardy'.

  • AU Lab audio and MIDI input irregularities

    Hi,
Using AU Lab with the internal mic on a macbook pro, audio will not become active
until I reselect the audio input from the studio window.
Similarly, it will not respond to MIDI from a software input (Supercollider 3) until I reselect the "Any MIDI Controller"
option in the MIDI Editor.  Oddly, the problem goes away if there is an external MIDI source (i.e., an Axiom 49)
    connected.
Any clues as to what to do?
    Cheers,
    RJK

Just a very quick starter, since it's late & I'd have to read this a lot more carefully to be much use to you… but perhaps it might help… worth a shot…
Are you trying to use two different devices, one for recording & one for playback? It sounds like you are. If that's so, either select your external device for playback +as well as+ recording, or set up an aggregate device (search for 'aggregate device' if this would be useful).

  • How do I hook my Keyboard up to my computer to use it as a MIDI controller?

Ok, I'm new to MACS and new to LOGIC. I just installed logic and all of its components on my IMAC. OSX 10.6.3 Once I installed everything, I tried to hook up my electric piano to use it as a MIDI controller. Mind you, I am also completely new to MIDI. My Piano is a KORG sp-300. I used an Alesis Audio Link USB- MIDI cable to connect my keyboard directly to a usb port in my MAC. I hooked up the midi side of the connector to the midi in and out on my keyboard, and plugged in the usb side to the computer. I then went to the Audio Midi set up, and looked in the midi studio, and there was the USB2MIDI(which is associated with the Alesis cord, and not my Korg piano) and the IAC driver from MAC. I checked so that both are online, and didn't change any of the other settings. I did a test set up, but when I played notes on the keyboard nothing happened.
So now when I open Logic, or garage band for that matter, it doesn't recognize that I have a midi controller hooked up. When I look in midi preferences in garageband, it says that there are 2 midi devices detected. In logic it says that there is no input or output.
I read the manual for LOGIC and for my Korg, and I am lost. Korg says that it transmits on 1 channel, automatically set to channel 1 if not adjusted, and receives on 16. If I am correct, right now I am not interested in receiving, only transmitting.
At this point, I just want to select a software instrument in Logic, play my Korg, and see notes(or MIDI data) appear in the arrange area. I don't know what's going on, but again, I am completely lost.
Could someone please help me here? Am I missing an obvious step? Like I said, I am new to all of this, so please let me know if you have any idea how to get my midi controller to work. It says in the Korg manual that it can be used as a controller, or a multitimbral tone generator. And I did switch the Local Off.
By the way, who would be best to call to solve this issue. MAC? Sweetwater(where I bought the Alesis cord, and Logic)? Or Korg?
Please let me know if you have any helpful advice.
    Thanks,
    Tristan

    Pancenter,
Thanks for the response, but I do not have a midi interface. I am using a midi to usb connector cable, thus bypassing the need for a Midi interface.
The Mac reads the USB cable as a midi device, but not the keyboard that I am trying to use as a controller. I have tried it with my korg sp 300 and with my Nord Electro 2.
    Thoughts?
    Thanks,
    Tristan
    Tristan...
This is what you have, correct?
    http://www.alesis.com/usbmidicable
    This from Alesis..
"The AudioLink Series USB cable receives and outputs MIDI signal thanks to its internal interface. The USB-MIDI Cable connects plug-and-play to your Mac or PC for an all-in-one USB-MIDI solution."
Notice, -internal interface-. What you have is a simple USB MIDI Interface. Most MIDI interfaces are USB.
My point is (was), MIDI OUT of the Korg goes to the connector marked MIDI IN on the Alesis, those new to MIDI often get this wrong.

  • Why does GarageBand '11 not recognise my MIDI Controller?

My Evolution MK-249 MIDI controller keyboard is recognised as being on the USB 3.0 Hi-Speed Bus in the System Information window, but is not recognised by GarageBand '11 nor does it appear as a device in Audio MIDI Setup. As a test, I plugged in a USB microphone + headset and GarageBand immediately detected the device and it appeared in Audio MIDI Setup.
Evolution are no longer in business, but support has been picked up by M-AUDIO. According to their website the MK-249 is amongst many MIDI devices for which "the class-compliant drivers built into Mac OS X provide full support for all features.".

I have just realised I have put this on the wrong forum - it is not relevant to iOS. I will now post it in the correct forum, please pardon my ignorance!

  • Error while trying to synchronize audio and MIDI.  Sample rate 42804 recognized.  Check conflict between Garageband and external device.

Sometimes, while playing back my software instrument songs, I get an intermittent pop-up error message, saying "Error while trying to synchronize audio and MIDI.  Sample rate 42804 recognized.  Check conflict between Garageband and external device."
(Sometimes the five digit number is different, but remains a five-digit number beginning with "4".)
Simultaneously, the song stops until I press the "Okay" button in the pop-up window.
When I continue to play the song, the sound is jerky and clipped, and the playhead doesn't keep up with the song, and then suddenly jumps to the part of the song currently being played.
There's also a sound of static.
The issue seems to occur whether or not I have my MIDI controller turned on and plugged into my desktop Imac.

  • USB MIDI controller no longer recognized by mac (not even in System Information).

    Hello!
I have an M-Audio Keystation 49e that I have been using with my MBP (early 2008 model) for a few years with absolutely zero problems ever. I recently bought a very generic Chinese MIDI interface ("Sanoxy" brand) to go between my full-size Yamaha and mac so that performances of parts into logic would be on weighted keys and such.
For a while I used both the MIDI interface with the Yamaha and the little 49-key MIDI controller (via USB and also powered by the USB) with no problems. I believe this problem occurred when I tried to use both the MIDI interface and MIDI controller on one USB port using a Targus external number pad (unpowered) that has two USB ports on it (bad idea I'm sure). I did this because my MBP only has two USB ports on it and I was using the other for my audio interface.
I have reset PRAM more than a couple times, reset SMC, cleaned caches (even though this could be done more thouroughly maybe with a recommended program besides Cocktail - trial is expired), even replaced AppleMIDIUSBDriver.plugin from my parents iMac which the MIDI controller still works on. All this and nothing. The keyboard is not recognized as even being plugged into the USB port on System Information even though the lights are on, much less AMS.
Any other information you need I'd be happy to let you know.
    Super thanks!
