M-Audio not connectin when using firewire 800 drive

Computers that have both a FireWire 400 and a FireWire 800 port may be sharing the same FireWire bus internally. When using both, the 400 and the 800 port at the same time, you may experience problems like audio drop outs or loss of connection to the M-Audio FireWire interface. There's a variety of possible reason for this including but not limited to bandwidth limitations, clocking issues (400/800) and bus master problems with the devices connected to both ports. M-Audio recommends using the M-Audio FireWire audio interface on the computers original FireWire port while adding a separate FireWire interface card to the system (PCI or PCMCIA). Connect any third party FireWire 800 devices to the added FireWire interface card.
But will this really fix the problem?
M-audio says yes & apple says maybe.
Sound like a serious flaw with apples firewire bus.

Damian,
Following are my experiences. My setup is listed down below.
-Yes, that will fix the problem. The bottom line is, M-audio FW box doesn´t like to share disk drives on the G5 firewire bus (both 400 aand 800). So yes, 400 and 800 FW ports are somehow connected internally, sharing the same resources.
-I had a spare FW 400 PCI card lying around, and I attached my disk drives to that. Didn´t start to look around for a FW 800 card though.
-And although it seems like a fault on Apple´s side too, I can´t speak very highly on the FW410 box either. Every time I do an update on my system, the 410 install gets messed up (won´t show devices in AudioMidiSetup, the only cure is to uninstall and re-install).
And the other interesting thing is that every time my Mac boots up, the 410 control panel mixer page is all messed up with funny pan positions and fader values. A reset does the job, but this has to be done every time I boot up. Maybe this is working in Tiger.
I tried solving this with the M-Audio support, and after describing my problem, they just said I should call their tech support. Being on the other side of the world, I shurely don´t wanna max out my phone bill.
Haven´t upgraded to Tiger yet, don´t want to keep upgrading all the time. In general the system is working nicely.

  • Time Machine fails to backup HD and stalls computer when backing up to external HD (Western Digital WD5000MT) when using Firewire 800 but works fine using USB

I have a mid 2012 MBP (MacbookPro9,1) running Mountain Lion 10.8.2.  When I start a Time Machine backup to an external Western Digital HD (WD5000MT) connected using a Firewire 800 cable, my open programs stop responding and in general my computer freezes up not allowing me to open activity monitor or the console utility.  I can't even shut down or restart my computer and must hard boot to reset.  Though removing the firewire cable that goes to the external HD can sometimes get my system working again.  However, the WD external HD also has a usb port and when I connect it to my computer via a USB cable, Time Machine seems to backup my system fine without stalling my computer.  This same external HD worked fine with Firewire 800 using my old late 2007 MBP running snow leopard.  I should note that my brother has the exact same model WD external HD and he also had issues with the firewire port on his MBP running mountain lion.  I have run the disk utility checking for disk/file permission errors and the drive itself seems fine.  I initially formatted that drive as ExFAT but while troubleshooting reformatted to HFS+ and still had the same issue.  I tested using a different firewire 800 cable but still had the same issue.  Can't think of anything else to do.  I don't have another firewire-compatible device to test if it is the HD vs the firewire port.   I would prefer to use the firewire port for quicker transfer speeds but I'm stuck with USB for now.  Any suggestions?

  • OSX 10.7.5 Finder unresponsive when using firewire 800 devices

My system was running well until recently when my finder in OSX 10.7.5 has beccome intermittently unresponsive. Many apps, especially Mail are not very responsive either.
I have multiple external hard drives (both 400 and 800) hooked into a Nitro AV firewire 800 hub repeater. When I pull the firewire 800 cable from the port on my Intel iMac, the system and finder seem to work properly. When using a single device plugged into the iMac's FW 800 port, the system and finder also appear to run fine.
Other symptoms include drive icons not ejecting and freezing on the desktop, system crashing often, very slow startup, apps running slowly at times and becoming unresponsive during use, slow opening of folders and slow launching of apps.
If anyone has had similar problems or has any experience with these issues, I would be grateful for your help.
    Thanks!!

I read another thread about the same problem and it is checked under Finder>Preferences.  All boxes except Macbook Pro are checked.

  • Ethernet not connected when using external hard drive

My brand new Mac Mini (mid 2010) works fine when I connected it out of the box to my router via Ethernet cable. But when I boot that new mini using an external hard drive (La Cie 500 GByte Firewire 800 connection), the Ethernet shows up as "Not connected". It advises that I should plug it in, or the other end may not be plugged in. But when I simply reboot again to the internal hard drive, without changing any connections, the internet connection works fine. When I boot a different and older Mac Mini (2.0 GHz Core Duo) off that same external hard drive (using Firewire 400 of course), the internet connection works fine. I'm stumped despite using Macs since 1986. I tried automatic mode, but I can't get far, because it thinks there is nothing plugged into the Ethernet port. But there is, and it even works when booting off the internal hard drive. Both the internal and external OS are at 10.6.4, latest. I also tried erasing the internal hard drive so it couldn't get confused, but that didn't help. What else to try?

The ethernet service has nothing to do with the cable plugged or not, and the ethernet cable is working fine with the other system, so definitely the issue with your other OS. Forget about the working OS for now and boot into the OS that has the problem and select the ethernet service from the service list in System Preferences > Network then click on minus button then apply the changes then click the plus to add it again.
If this didn't work, go to :
    /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration
and trash the NetworkInterfaces.plist file then restart and see if it solves the issue.

  • 3rd gen iPod not recognized when using Firewire

The 3rd gen iPod only charges via FireWire. Given the lousy battery life provided by the device, I need to be able to sync using the Firewire port of my Macbook (Home) or my Macbook Pro (work). The device is not recognized by iTunes (or in general, no notices are given that would indicate that the device is connected). I have:
    - Restored the device via USB
    - Restored it to be Apple format (it was previously Windows format)
    - Confirmed that it DOES work with USB - but that's not what I want
    - Tried this on 2 laptops
    - Confirmed that charging via Firewire DOES work - so I'm assuming that the cable works as well
Is there a diagnostic application that will tell me the status of the on-board firewire port?

I luckily still had a PC around. I was able to reset it on the PC, then reformat on the Mac.

  • Iomega eGo 2TB USB/Firewire 800 drive not working with Time Machine.

The drive I had for Time Machine died and I replaced it with an iomega eGo 2 TB USB/Firewire 800 drive. Time Machine finds it and backs up the disk when I first boot up but then it seems like the drive goes off line. At that point, when Time Machine tires to back up it can't get the drive to respond and my system hangs. To fix that, I turn off the iomega that fixes the hang up and I get the disconnect without ejecting warning.
I ran disk utility and disk warrior. Both apps reported the disk is fine.
Can any tell me what's up? I'm running OS X 10.7.2
    Thanks.

I am having this exact same error with my new iMac 21.5" connected to a brand new Iomega eGo 2 TB Desktop Firewire 800 External Hard Drive (Mac Edition - 34796).
The TimeMachine backup works fine, but as soon as the iMac goes to sleep and wakes back up, TimeMachine doesn't respond well to any commands and all sorts of errors appear on the screen.
I will try the tip here from Kappy and report back later if this works for me.
Kappy, one thing to note is that I'm using the Firewire connection from the iMac to the eGo and experiencing this problem.  The eGo has its own power supply too.

  • What is FireWire and what FireWire adapter do I need to use FireWire 800 for my portable external hard drive ?

Hi guys, I'm new to Mac. I have a MacBook Pro 13" (late 2011) with Lion OS and Parallels 7 (Windows 7). My understanding is that there is FireWire connection / extension built in to the MacBook Pro already. I also have a Seagate FreeAgent GoFlex portable external hard drive 750GB USB2.0 and 3.0 (that can be used for PC and Mac). It states that the portable external harddrive is FireWire 800 compatible. The questions are (1) how does FireWire works ? (2) how do I use or activate FireWire 800 ? (3) is there any setup / setting changes I need to on my MacBook Pro ? (4) what FireWire adapter do I need to purchase to connect my portable external harddrive to my MacBook Pro ? Is it expensive ?
I read a few articles online but they are too technical for me. They mentioned something about FireWire adapter with 6 pins or 9 pins. Not sure what that means. I'm totally confused. So any help, advise or guidance will be much appreciated. In Layman's term would be better. Thanks.
How about Thunderbolt ? Is it compatible with the above external portable hard drive mentioned ? Do I need a Thunderbolt adapter for it ? How do I activate or use Thunderbolt ?

    Thanks, Clinton and Alberto.
The below link is the Seagate FreeAgent GoFlex portable external hard drive (product code STAA750302) that I have. It states that it features USB 2.0 or 3.0 plug–and–play connectivity and easily upgradeable to USB 3.0, FireWire 800 or eSATA. It only comes with a 18-inch USB 3.0 / 2.0 backward compatible cable.
    http://www.seagate.com/au/en/external-hard-drives/portable-hard-drives/standard/ goflex/
Based on the above, my understanding is that I need to buy a FireWire 800 adapter to connect to the portable external hard drive so that I can use FireWire 800 with my MacBook Pro. Is this correct ? Do I need to get a separate cable as well or can I just use the 18-inch USB 3.0 / 2.0 backward compatible cable that was provided in the box ? If so, what sort of FireWire 800 cable do I need to get ? 9 pin to 9 pin ? 6 pin to 9 pin ? Or 4 pin to 9 pin ?

Can I get audio through iPhone when using apple tv?

What do you mean exactly? Are you wanting to output the audio to your iPhone while say watching a video on your Apple TV?  If so, I'm afraid it's not possible.  However, you should post this in the Apple TV forums for a better confirmation on then.  There are some prettty knowledgable people who hang out there.

  • Computer crash with iTunes - Using external firewire 800 drive

I am using an external firewire 800 drive (2TB Lacie) to store all my music for iTunes... At random times this crashes the computer, the music "skips" and the computer has a grey notice telling me to shutdown immediately. I am not sure why this is happening, but think this must be some sort of conflict issue... but no clue how to resolve... Any advice would be great!! Thanks!

Oh no, sounds like kernel panics. Time to head directly to The X Lab to read the FAQs and get started with maintenance and troubleshooting. Unfortunately, this problem goes way beyond iTunes, so for additional support, you should post in the appropriate OS X forum.

  • Audio cuts out when using Interfaces

Just recently bought my first iMac, with plans to use it for multi-track recording. The audio is cutting out when using FireWire or USB interfaces to record and/or play audio. For instance, with an Edirol FA-66, even iTunes experiences brief periodic audio loss (every 20 seconds or so) when playing through the device. PreSonus Firebox works a bit better, with a 1 to 3 second loss every 40 seconds or so... this happens when using OSX as well as XP... the operating system doesn't seem to influence the problem. To be certain it wasn't a FireWire issue, I tested it with an M-Audio USB interface and had the same audio loss.
Talking with tech support, the first guy just blamed everything on the 3rd party devices. That drove me CRAZY. Finally he got a specialist on the phone, who blamed it on the intel chip.
Right now I'm just living with it... trying to record songs in smaller pieces. I wait for the audio to drop, then as soon as it comes back I hit record. I've got about 40 seconds (using the Firebox) which is enough to lay down a verse or chorus.
I'm just hoping, HOPING that someone at Apple is looking into these things.

    Hello,
This may be a stretch but your mention of " hard drive hanging" prompted me to suggest your problem may involve low data transfer rates. (I mean, the hard drive may have too slow.)
When, for example, Final Cut Express or Pro are being used, they require high data transfer rates to avoid frame dropping. Apple's article on the HD requirements for those apps is here:

  • Beginning of audio cut off when using digital optical out

    Hi all,
This is my first post here since switching to Mac earlier this year.
I'm having problems with the first second or so of audio being cut off when commencing playback using the Mac's digital optical out.  This happens with any source of audio in a variety of different applications (e.g. video, iTunes, even system sounds for notifications and the like).   I have used a mini Toslink to Toslink optical cable to connect from the Mac's audio out jack to the receiver of my digital speakers (Logitech Z906).  Once playback has commenced, audio plays fine; it's just the very first second or so which is usually clipped.
The problem does NOT happen when using the built-in speakers.  I've also noticed that if I unplug the cable from the receiver end (leaving it connected at the Mac end) I can see the red LED light shining the optical signal down the cable, but this goes out exactly 30 seconds after audio stops playing.  If I start another audio playback within 30 seconds, there is no loss of audio at the beginning, but if I wait longer than 30 seconds (i.e. after the LED has gone out) I encounter the problems with the initial audio being clipped.   I therefore suspect that this is an OS issue which is shutting down the digital optical out when audio is not actually playing (presumably to save power or something).  I wouldn't have a problem with this if it actually worked properly when audio playback recommences, but it seems that there is a slight delay whilst the optical out service 'wakes up' again and this is leading to the clipped audio.
I've done some searching of the internet (and these support communities) for this problem and there seems to be little information about it.  It does seem to affect a few other people though and some have resorted to third party applications or scripts which play silent audio at regular intervals to keep the optical output running permanently (e.g. SoundStay (https://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/39833/soundstay) - no longer maintained and the download link is dead).  However, these amount to a kludge at best which treat the symptoms rather than the underlying cause, which I would rather resolve.
I tried to log a support case with Apple in order to have them call me, only to have the system tell me that my support has already expired, despite having purchased the Mac only 4 months ago.  It seems that my Apple One-Year Limited Warranty is actually only 90 days when it comes to telephone support.  So here I am!
Does anyone else have this problem with optical out, and how can I resolve this?  Any help would be gratefully appreciated.
    Thank you.

    Hello kcore66,
Would it be possible for you to upload one of the files in
question so that I can take a look. In Captivate 1.01 there is an
intermittent problem where sometimes the audio is either cut off or
just doesn't play when you publish / preview. To get around this
simply moving the audio object back and forth along the timeline
and then positioning it back in it's original position works 9
    times out of 10.
    HTH
