M-Audio Transit USB equivalent?

Is there another product that's an equivalent to M-Audio Transit USB?
The M-Audio Transit simply doesn't work for me. No AC3/DTS pass through from my Mac mini. So, looking for a better alternative.
Thanks in advance for any recommendations.
Cheers,
AT

I use the M-Audio Sonica USB - not Theater. It's a simple device. It works great with AC-3 output to my hifi via optical (toslink). It's an old model, but some can be picked up quite cheaply.
But I don't understand why the Transit doesn't work.
You don't need the M-Audio drivers as far as I know if you just want digital sound out to a hifi. You may need them if you want to do sound effects/equalisation first. This was a development sometime during the life of 10.3. Apple's core audio does all the stuff that's necessary and apps like DVD Player and VLC take advantage.
The only thing you need to do is to ensure the firmware gets loaded into the Sonica after a shutdown. You can extract the firmware from the M-Audio drivers using Pacifist (it's easy really), and then set it to be an automated task on startup. Even if I unplug my Sonica and replug it in (eg after plugging in an iPod into the USB port), it immediately gets the firmware and the mac immedialtey switches sound output back to the Sonica. This tip may also work for the M-Audio Transit.
I have been doing this sucessfully since 10.4 came along when I made this change.
If you need any further explanations, post back.

  • ITunes Digital Output using M-Audio Transit USB???

    Hi all,
Having recently attached an M-Audio Transit USB external "soundcard" to my Mac Mini (PPC) and hooked up the TOSlink digital output from the Transit to my AV amplifier, I can definitely state that Apple DVD Player and VLC both utilise the Digital Output, giving me full 5.1 AC3 signals from DVDs/DivX movies etc, which I had hoped to be the case.
However, I'm curious as to what the actual output from iTunes is. If I'm playing an Apple Lossles audio file, does iTunes decompress this to the original 44kHz PCM and send this through Core Audio straight to the Digital output of the Transit? In other words, am I getting bit-accurate audio information into the AV amp?
Anyone who can confirm or deny this, please let me know, as this was one reason for me buying the Transit!!!!
Also, any idea how to get DTS audio from a redbook CD out from this setup? Will VLC handle it? Or even iTunes???
    Thanks,
    JF
    15" Powerbook PPC G4 1.5 (1Gb RAM) + MacMini PPC G4 1.5 (512Mb RAM)   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

You can get full 5.1 AC3 signals from DVD because that's what the audio on the disk is encoded with. You won't get 5.1 AC3 or DTS signals from iTunes if the files are only encoded in stereo. I don't have a Transit, but I have the Sonica USB which is the previous model of the same device. They have different drivers (and your Intel Mac mini would have different drivers than a PPC Mac mini with the same Transit device), but I would guess we have similar experiences with the devices. You won't get DTS out of any file that's not DTS to begin with. That's one reason the Transit System Preferences pane will give you options to configure non-surround sound audio coming from your Mac mini to your stereo.

  • Anybody using M-Audio Transit USB with Front Row?

If any of you are using Front Row with the external Transit USB D/A Coverter, and are experiencing freezing issues, you may want to read below what I have been able to figure out as to why this is happening.
After MANY hours of frustration, I have been able to confirm that the Transit USB is causing the following problem:
I have a Mac Mini with a clean install of Leopard 10.5.2 and all Apple updates. Nothing else is installed. With the Transit NOT connected to the Mini, I installed the latest 1.7-3 drivers from your site and restarted computer. I then connected the Transit and selected AC-3 as the Audio Output. In order to make Front Row see AC-3, you must open "DVD Player" and select its output to "Digital Out - M-Audio Transit USB" instead of "System Sound Output". You then need to restart Mini. With that done, playing movies thru "DVD Player" works fine. However, when you go to watch a movie thru "Front Row", the Transit (for some reason) causes "Front Row" to freeze. It doesn't freeze during movie playback, it freezes when hitting "Menu" and you are sitting at the Menu Screen that asks for the following 3 options: "Resume Playing", "Start from Beginning", or "DVD Menu". There is no way to get out of this frozen state. You MUST restart computer. When computer restarts, if you go into "DVD Player" Preferences and change the audio output selection back to "System Sound Output" and restart computer, this issue disappears and Front Row works fine again (however, without AC-3).
To reiterate my point: Transit USB works fine with DVD Player but NOT with Front Row. I have confirmed this on 2 Mac Mini's.

This is indeed an M-Audio issue. I have the same setup you do, except my mini is a 1.25GHz G4 with no on-board Digital audio output.
To make it work with front row, you have to go to (Settings) and turn off the background music, it will stop freezing and let you select your media.
My AC3 output from my Transit USB has never worked in this configuration. My receiver just doesn't see AC3 coming out of it.....soooo no sound at all. However I set it to (Outputs 1&2), (24bit) and boom...my receiver plays back in its Pro Logic setting via an optical connection from the Transit. All my movies and music playback just lovely. BUT. If I go on the net and try to play a flash video, like a YouTube, etc... Safari will freeze. I verified it is the Transit and not Safari because the moment I unplug the Transit, Safari wakes up, the video resumes and sound plays through the internal speaker just fine.
Something's goofy with the M-Audio Driver for Leopard.

  • Does the M Audio Transit really works?

I have been thinking about buying something a 650W 5.1-Ch. Home Theater System, then i found out that the sound card in Mac Mini doesn't even support 5.1 so i was told that M Auido Transit which is a external USB sound card will put out 5.1, but how is the sound quality or does it even work?
    Thanks.

    Well, Marat,
The difference between "PC speakers" and a "5.1 surround sound system" are sometimes only semantic ones.
But, as Mr. Laughlin points out, sometimes a 5.1 home theatre system is marketed without a Dolby decoder.
So, the powerful Yamaha system that you mention certainly is a 5.1 system that can be connected to your Mini, and appears to include the decoder. About the only significant difference that you'll notice between the two units is that the Yamaha's decoder looks more like a VCR than does the Z-5500 decoder. I suppose you could debate the quality of decoders, but the Logitech is rated well in this area.
    http://www.logitech.com/index.cfm/products/details/US/EN,CRID=2,CONTENTID=9486
The Logitech Z-5500 can easily qualify as a home theatre system, and includes a critical wireless remote. But, you're right, other "systems" that cost more do have an appearance that may be better in a living room (like Klipsch units).
So, appearace and price may be the key factors in your decision, as the units probably have similar performance. You'll still need a M-Audio Transit or Theatre (which isn't a decoder), though.
Someone else here just got some Z-5500s for their Mini:

  • No audio after USB audio accessory is connected

I've discovered what I believe is a rather interesting (and rather serious) bug in the iPhone 2.0 software:
When an USB IAP accessory (such as a lot of newer car stereos) is connected and disconnected a couple of times the audio output from the iPhone will often stop working. Disconnecting the accessory or plugging/unplugging headphones does not fix the problem.
And I mean the audio completely dies: I get no audio from the phone, voicemail, ringtones, iPod, or system sounds from the speaker, headphones, or dock output.
It's like the audio drivers crash. Sometimes the audio will start working again after a long period of time (like if the phone has been sitting idle for hours while I'm at work) but usually I have to reboot to get it working. It seems when I can get audio to work again without a reboot, I get a new crashReporter log about mediaserverd the next time I sync.
The problem occurs when the phone is connected to an iPod accessory that uses the IAP audio-over-USB capability (I tried my Pioneer car stereo and a Kenwood stereo at Best Buy) It does not occur when connected to an accessory that only uses analog audio. I've seen it happen on my iPhone 3G and the original iPhone, so I know it's not a hardware problem.
I know for a fact the Pioneer and Kenwood units I tested are stated as having USB inputs compatible with the iPod Video, iPod Nano, iPod Classic, and iPod touch. (I can confirm the Pioneer does work fine with my old iPod Video.)
Multiple reviews have shown them to also work well with original iPhones running 1.1.4 and below (even if you do get the "not made for iPhone" warning)
However, both phones I tested are running 2.0. Which leads me to think this is a bad 2.0 bug.

  • Sound plays through Matrox MX02 instead of Komplete Audio 6 USB Device =(

In Adobe Premire Pro CC I can't use my NI Komplete Audio 6 usb device for playback. Instead sound always comes out of my Matrox MX02 when I'm scrubbing or playing.
Under Preferences -> Audio Hardware -> Default Device I have selected Komplete Audio 6. When I hit ASIO settings it brings up the expected Komplete Audio 6 Control Panel.
Under Preferences -> Playback -> Audio Device I see options for Adobe DV, Adobe Desktop Audio, and Matrox Player but no Komplete Audio 6.
My system is a custom built Windows7 PC. Any advice on getting sound out of my Komplete Audio 6 instead of the Matrox MX02 would be much appreciated!

the komplete audio 6 seems more problematic than expected.
Preferences -> Audio Hardware -> Default Device -> Premiere Pro WDM Sound causes stuttery playback. I've tried enabling/disableing "Device 32-bit Playback" under ASIO settings and I've also ensured that the buffer size (256 samples) is the same as in my Komplete Audio 6 Control Panel.
Preferences -> Audio Hardware -> Default Device -> Komplete Audio 6 audio playback is fine but if I alt-tab away from PPCS6 the application will freeze as I describe in this thread: http://forums.adobe.com/message/5412540#5412540 ...
I'm running the latest driver/control pannel from Native Instruments (3.1.0) and the latest firmware has been flashed to the Komplete Audio 6 (45).

  • Can MacBook Pro output digital audio via usb?

I'd like to output digital audio via usb. Can it be done from iTunes? This would allow me to go directly to my dac and then to my preamp.
    Thanks.

Russell, there are quite a variety of devices that accept digital audio over USB from any mac with a USB port - see http://www.trendsaudio.com/EN/Product/USBAudiodesc.htm for one example.
Try a google on MAC USB Audio OUTPUT any you should pop up some useful options.

  • Displayport audio vs USB audio

I have pre-Thunderbolt 27 display that is offering my 2011 Mac Mini 2 audio options : Display Port vs USB audio
Now, I beleive if I will have to plug in the USB cable either way, to ge the USB hub, microphone, camera to work.
So I don't believe I can necessarily save the USB port (if I could, then why would there be Thunderbolt?).
What I want to know is there any advantage to using Display Audio over USB ?
    - Is the sound any better ?
    - When I am using USB networking for other purposes, will Display Audio have less USB bus contention and play better ?
    - Similar as above, when playing music over Display Port, will my USB devices be faster due to less contention ?
I am leaning towards Display Port audio unless someone can give a definitive answer
    Thanks.

You say 'no', but then why did they add the option on the Mac Mini? ie It wasn't to free the USB connector,  as that is still used anyhow for the camera, mic, usb hub and software updates.
Software updates?  Not sure what that has to do with this.  But anyhow I have a mac pro with a 27" mini-displayport apple display and both options are available too.  It has nothing to do with power (I'm certainly not underpowered).  It's simply that those ports are available audio out devices.
On my old Macbook Pro, when viewing live video from my Hauppagauge HDPVR via a different USB port on the Mac (not the screen), the sound was sometimes choppy if I was doing other tasks as well.
You machine has its limits in processing power and is probably having trouble using too many processor intensive processes.  Use your Activity Monitor to see which processes are using large amounts of cpu time.
The display has a USB hub that chains of the USB port, so if have other devices working like my external USB Bluray drive, then I think there could be contention when using that also when reading/writing.
Contention is managed everywhere; hard drives, usb buss, fireware buss,  pci buss, memory buss, and any others I can't think of at the moment.  You're splitting hairs worrying about sending audio to usb ports which is a blip on the overall processing of generating that audio in the first place.  In other words its the processes and efficiency of your machine that are a bootleneck.
So I am really hoping someone will confirm that the audio data was moved to the mini-display plug to provide more bandwidth via the USB controller, or to guarantee bandwidth for consistent audio.
    Good luck with that.

  • Can't hear sound with M-Audio MobilePre USB driver in Logic 7.2

Hi. I've installed an M-Audio MobilePre USB interface to hook up a nova mic and i've also hooked up an oxygen eight midi keyboard. Can't get any sound from Logic when i select M-Audio MobilePre USB as my driver, and can't get Logic to recognize my midi keyboard. I have downloaded the latest M-Audio MobilePre USB update off the web, and still nothing. I'm new at all of this. Can someone help me? Thanks in advance.

I'm wondering did you install the drivers and after that plugin the usb devices or did you leave them plugged in during install?
What happens when you unplug the midi interface and put it back in? Is it recognized by Logic by putting up a dialog that something has changed?

  • Plantronics .Audio 510 USB not detected in Leopard

    Hi guys and gals
I just updated my OS X from 10.4.9 to 10.5.1, and now I've got a bit of a problem with my Plantronics .Audio 510 USB headset. In 10.4, it would be detected automatically and work just dandy, but in 10.5, no such luck. It will not even show up in Sound in the Pref Panel. I've checked that the USB headset is receiving power, and it is. The mute button works and lights up, and the volume buttons affect OS X. The volume is turned up or down when I press them, but for the built-in speakers only.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks in advance.

    Hi guys,
I've just bought the .Audio 510 USB myself. My system sees the headset but only as an "Unkown USB Audio Device". I can get it working, but I need to manually go in and select it in my systems settings and Skype preferences each time I plug it in.
I also use NiceCast streaming software and it's the same deal with that. How are you guys getting on with it. Have you had any success since you last posted?

  • PCMCIA 5102 not compatible in windows 7, USB equivalent / Tektronix TDS 2024B usage

    Hello,
I am given a 8.5 labview program that works in windows xp and uses PCMCIA 5102 digitizer card for signal acquistion and showing it in graphs.
we are converting that code to LV2012 and win 7.
i just found out that the pcmcia 5102 is not supported in win 7 anymore and is showing niscope error and cannot install any drivers for it.
we are using the 4 channels on it (ch0,ch1, trigger, clock) and these cards are also obsolete.
is there a USB equivalent for it or even 3rd party with labview drivers, ni has all the usb new ones that have only 3 inputs. how to solve this problem?
we have tektronix tds2024b, how can i use this as an equivalent to PCMCIA 5102 and acquire and show on labview graphs real-time. I didnot program any instrument before ..
one thing observed is that the oscilloscope graphs cho, ch1, trigger nicely even though i removed the clock input. i donot understand the use of clock input if it can graph all the three signal as expected without clock. is that clock only required when using a NI digitizer?
    plz help.
    Thanks

    Hey freemason,
You are correct that the PCMCIA 5102 is not compatible with Windows 7, however we do have the USB-5132 and USB-5133 which have a USB connection and should be (if the program uses the NI-SCOPE driver) a drop-in replacement.  They do not have the PFI lines that the 5102 does, but it sounds like you were only using that as an external clock and the 5132/3 have a 50MHz/100MHz internal clock respectively that is both faster and more accurate than the internal clock on the 5102.
There are also PCI options if you do need those PFI lines.
As for whether you can use the Tek TDS2024b as a replacement: As Dennis said, unless you used the IVI driver in the program, there will be a lot of work to convert the code to use that scope.  There is a driver for it, and if you're ever interested if a driver exists for a 3rd party instrument, you can go to the following link and search; the Tektronix TDS series is first in the list of most popular drivers.
    http://www.ni.com/downloads/instrument-drivers/
Finally, that PCMCIA card has a 20MHz clock inside of it that you should be able to use for a sample clock, so an external clock isn't required.  If you had a more accurate clock you wanted to use or maybe if you wanted to synchronize the card with another one, that would be the main reason to use an external clock source.
    Hope this helps!

  • L505D-LS5001 no audio / no usb problem

i been having problems with my audio and usb drive, allready try installing drivers  and nothing..
the audio tells me no audio output installed.
and the usb and sd card slot wont work eider.  runnning windows 7 32bit , audio driver is microsoft audio highdefiniton with the yellow (!)
when i try to install laptops drivers go to the best drivers allready install.
usb problem i really dont know whats  the problem..Laptop still on warranty.
    Any help please

I have run into this same issue; it seems to occur that in device manager, no USB host is even present.   Audio just has a red "X" on it.
I've tried installing the drivers, updates.
I restored from the Restore discs from Toshiba (which just crash)
I've done an install from a straight WIn7 X64 disc (which works, but then Red "X")
    I've tried changing memory, HDD..
I've tried bootable LInux, which also doesn't see a USB controller.
This is very annoying.  This seems to have happened after someone flashed the 1.10 BIOS onto this (I have an L505D-LS5007)
Something here is very amiss, and a laptop with  no USB, no Audio is almost worthless.  It's as though the BIOS control for the southbridge is wrong.  I've tried re-flashing with 1.10, no difference.. I'd love to be able to rollback to 1.00, but I can't even find it.

  • EXTERNAL SOUNDCARD: Unable to connect to M-Audio Audiophile USB. Is it on?

    Hello,
I am brand new to Mac's, this is my first ever one i've had that i'm on right now.
I have my M-Audio Audiopjile USB External Soundcard plugged in, switched on, everything exactly how it was in my PC.
I just downloaded the drivers for it from the website but I keep getting the message in the title of this question on my system preferences > other > m-audio audiophile.
The reason I need my soundcard working is because it is connected to my two studio monitor speakers that I use for music production.
Any help would be hugely appreciated.
    Thanks in advance,
    Alex.

    Hi Dan,
Apologies for the extremely long reply, I don't often check the email associated with this account.
I never did end up resolving my issue. I accepted defeat and got myself a new soundcard. The only thing I could possibly think of is that the audiophile soundcard just isn't compatible with the Mac, I know the website says it is but that definitely wasn't the case for me and it sounds like it's the same for you.
Sorry I couldn't give you any better help dude. If it helps I replaced mine with a Tascam US-200, that definitely does work!
    Alex

  • Audio via USB displays input level but no sound is heard.

I have a Roland System 1 synth that features audio via USB. I have installed the drivers, and the System 1 is showing up in my menu for system preferences/sound. When I select the System 1 as my input device, play the keys, and adjust the synths volume knob, the input level meter responds accordingly, showing that the Mac is hearing the output of the synth. However, I can not get the sound to come out of the speakers! The Mac's internal speakers are set as my output device, and they are turned up and working fine with all other audio.

I have MIDI working fine in my DAW.
I just can't get any audio to play through USB, which is a feature of the System 1.
System 1 is set as my input device (driver has been installed) within system preferences/sound, I play the keys, and adjust the synths volume knob, the input level meter responds accordingly in the preferences window, showing that the Mac is hearing the output of the synth. No sound is heard.
All other Audio/system sounds/itunes/etc. can be heard.
