M115-S3094 Restore without DVD Drive.

Hello,
I have a M115-S3094 laptop and the DVD Drive does not read disc. It does not show to have any problems with the drive in Device Manager. I have tried everything I can find to correct the problem if it is a software issue (Microsoft FIx-It, Reinstall Driver, Update driver, Restore Point, etc.) but no luck. My last resort is to completely restore the computer to factory condition because the computer is in need of restoring anyway. I have the factory restore disc but the problem is the DVD Drive will not read it. I have tried to copy the disk to an external hard drive and run the restore from it but it acts like it will only use the DVD drive for restore. I have also tried all the boot from restore partition (Hold 0 zero then start button until it beeps, Hold F8 at Toshiba start screen) but that does not work either.
Can anyone help me on how I can do a restore on it without using the DVD Drive? I am hoping it will start working after doing a restore but even if it does not that's no big deal. I know the computer is getting old and worn out so if I have to do without the DVD drive that's OK. I just need to be able to do a system restore for the performance of the laptop.
Thanks for any help!

Cornelius, thanks for the hint. It works for me too
During my first attempt I did a mistake. When I read your post I thought my mistake was related to how I used the hardware at my disposal.
In fact I used a PBG4 as a FW-TDM and an intel iMac Alu as a machine to install the OS. That led to the result I described in my previous posts.
Tiger 10.4 was the media installation DVD.
I did the test again. This time I used the iMac as FW-TDM and the PBG4 as the destination.
The Tiger DVD did show up on PBG4 and I could boot from the FW-TDM DVD.
Unfortunately after a couple of minutes the PBG4 hanged.
At that very moment I realized I did a second mistake.
I was using Tiger 10.4 on a machine that was shipped with Tiger 10.4.2.
And also the second test was faulty, because the iMac shipped with Tiger 10.4.10.
Moreover the first release of Tiger being able to run on an intel processor was 10.4.6.
So, for the final test I used Leopard server 10.5.4 and all went as expected.

You can't unless the PowerBook is running Mac OS X Server, in which case the NetInstall feature can be used.

I just tried it between a Power Mac G5 and a PowerBook G3 (Pismo) and it worked. The G5 was Mac in Firewire Target Disk Mode. I started the G5 with the T with no DVD in the drive. I started up the G3, and the G5's hard drive appeared on the G3's desktop. I pushed the eject key (on the G5 keyboard) and the SuperDrive opened. I put in a DVD (the Tiger installation disk) and closed the SuperDrive. The DVD appeared on the G3's desktop. I restarted the G3 with the Option key held down, and the DVD in the G5 appeared as a valid startup choice."

  • Can I install Tiger without DVD drive?

    Hello all!
I need your advice and help!
Today I finally added more RAM to my iMac and proceeded to upgrade to OSX. I bought v10.4.3 Tiger at a retail location. Nothing happens after I inserted the installation DVD. Then I realised that I probably do not have a DVD drive! (I did look at the system requirement page and saw a slot loading iMac there ...)
Is there any way I could install Tiger? All your help is much appreciated!
    kris

First, have you installed the firmware update required for your model? You must boot directly into OS 9.1 or higher (but not OS X) to install the firmware update.
Secondly, your hard drive must be formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled) for Tiger.
If you open your Apple System Profiler it should tell you if you have a DVD drive. It was an option on your model, especially if you have the DV model.
If you don't have a DVD drive, then there are ways to install Tiger without one. One way is to exchange the DVD for a CD set from Apple. Visit the Apple OS X site to find the form needed for the exchange.
The following KB articles present alternatives for installing Tiger without a DVD:

    http://www.applelinks.com/p5/index.php/more/osx_odyssey_752_how_to_installing_tiger_using_firewire_target_diskmode/
You can also use an external Firewire DVD drive provided it is a bootable drive.

  • Recovery without DVD Drive

Recently purchased a HP ProBook 430 G1.  I attempted to request HP Support online but when I clicked on the link for this model no page was found.  Hope someone here can help.    The device was installed  with Windows 7 (at my request).   It came with the Windows 8 DVDs if I want to unpgrade.  I would like to do this now.   How do I begin?   There is no DVD drive and I assume the recovery partition holds W7.   Do I need to purchase a portable DVD drive or can I copy the DVDs to a stick?
    Thank you in advance.

Your computer shipped with Windows 7 Pro installed from the factory and a set of Windows 8/8.1 Pro Restore Discs. This is a common configuration for business computers. Before using the Windows 8 / 8.1 discs, you must create a set of Windows 7 Restore/Recovery Discs (or USB media), if you wish to reinstall Windows 7 at any time in the future.
You will not be able to copy the Windows 8 / 8.1 discs to a USB stick and you may not be able to create Windows 7 USB recovery media. You may need to purchase an external USB CD/DVD drive to accomplish creating the recovery media and installing Windows 8 /8.1

  • How do I install Adobe Photoshop Elements 12 on new MacBook Pro without DVD drive?

I just purchased my first MacBook Pro and am trying to get everything set up and installed. I purchased Adobe Photoshop Elements 12 and retrieved my serial number and have the redemption code -- but I can't figure out how to install Photoshop without a DVD drive. The Photoshop package I purchased only provides DVDs and I don't have a DVD drive. Is there a website I can go to to install Photoshop and enter my serial number or redemption code?

Have you tried downloading the trial version and using your serial
    number to activate it?
The trial version is a complete product and can be activated by

  • Format/Reinstall Without DVD Drive

    Hi there,
I got a good deal (free) on a 1G G4 PowerBook. I'd like to reformat the hard drive and re-install the original system software (OS 10.2.7 -- I have the original DVD).
The only trouble is, the CD/DVD drive does not work.
Is there any way to do this without replacing the CD/DVD drive or buying an external drive?
I also have a fully functional G4 PowerBook, a G5 iMac and a LaCie external hard drive with a bootable system on it.
Thanks in advance for any help you can provide!

    hi megamelon,
you should boot the G4 in firewire mode. connect it to your other functionnal G4 using a firewire cable. the start your DVD broken's G4 by holding the key "T".
then, you should use the install DVD that came with your functional G4 and start it on your functional G4 DVD drive. start the installer as usual and when it will be time to select on which drive to install; be sure to select the DVD broken's G4.

  • Installing Leopard without DVD drive?

I have an older MacBook that I have replaced with the Air, but now want to use the older one as a music and photo server (given the size of the Air's disk). I want to install Leopard on it, but the DVD drive on the old machine is scrogged. I can think of several ways to do this, but any suggestions as to which of those possibilities works?

    (1) Use another machine to create disk image of the installation DVD on a bootable firewire drive. Boot the MacBook from the firewire drive.
    (2) Attach the MacBook to an iMac via firewire. Boot the MacBook in target mode. Put the Installation DVD in iMac drive. Install onto the MacBook.
For (1), disk images aren't bootable. What you have to do is restore the install disk to a FWHD partition, using Disk Utility. For (2), that'll work as long as the iMac, when booted with the install disk can see the MB's HD.
However, nerowolfe's comment is the germane one: dual-layer DVD readers/writers are available for under $100 US and that'll make your MB totally usable.

  • How to install from DVD onto machine without DVD drive

My boss has a laptop without a DVD drive, and wants to install Tiger. Tiger comes on a DVD. What is the best way to complete this install?
If I put the DVD in my laptop, then mount it as an external drive will that give us access to the DVD within it?

You can copy Tiger to CD's (if you already have the Tiger DVD's) and do the install from CD's. Or if your boss has a firewire port on his laptop you can plug in a firewire DVD drive and run the installation from there. You will need to hold down the option key to select which drive to start off of.
If you haven't already purchased Tiger you could buy the CD version on eBay.

Was it OWC that used to sell the disks that
come with eMacs and claimed they work
    on any computer?
To the best of my knowledge, OWC has never misrepresented any product of this type. They have in the past & still do sell grey, model-specific OS installer disks, but these are suitable for any Mac that can run the OS version they contain. Some of the older iMac & eMac installer disk versions would install the full version of the OS on any qualified model but would install the bundled apps (if included) only on the model they were made for.
OWC always makes this clear in the product description, & even offers a picture of the actual disk they are selling so there can be no mistake in what you are buying. More importantly, OWC sells the disks with bona fide Apple licenses for the OS version they contain.
See for example this OWC page & the links to the Panther & Jaguar products it sells. Note that each set clearly states "w/license" on that page & the various notes on each product's individual description page about system requirements, what is installed, etc.
    This is reselling done right!
BTW, I have no affiliation with OWC other than as a customer. For that matter, some years back I had a bit of a hassle with OWC over a product I thought it misrepresented & it took a couple of months to straighten everything out. Even though I ended up paying more than I think I should have for return shipping in the back & forth compromises involved in the resolution, I have to say I never got the impression the company was seedy or out to cheat me.

  • Reformat without DVD drive?

I have a Toshiba Satellite A215-S7416 and the DVD drive is no longer recognized.  After trying to reformat with the Recovery discs that came with my laptop and failing midway, I resorted to installing Linux instead (via thumb drive).  I've also tried hooking an external DVD drive via USB, but the laptop won't recognize that either.  I would like to know if there is a way to put the recovery discs (2 of them) on a thumb drive so that I can get Vista back on the laptop?  Or is there another way that I can get my external DVD drive to be recognized?  I go into boot options and select to boot from USB, but it does not do so.  It does, however, recognize a USB thumb drive.  Thanks!

Does the DVD drive show up when you look inside my computer? If not, there is a registry edit you can use to make it reappear.  You might also try reseeding the DVD drive. You can also download Microsofts fix it for the dvd drive.

  • How do you install MACOSX without DVD drive?

    hey guys,
I have a Powerbook, the DVD drive does not work anymore. I would like to format my Powerbook. I remember hearing that you can install MAC OSX via network?
The Powerbook is my only MAC computer, I have another computer which is a PC running on Windows XP. Is there anyway I can put my original MAC OSX bootup disk on the PC and have it read by the Powerbook via ethernet network?
If there is a more simpler solution, please advise.
PS. I'm aware I can use an external firewire DVD drive, but I do not have access to any at this point, and unfortunately can't spend money on one. I'm broke from school tuition, books and the necessities of life.
Thanks again for your help and support.
    Teddy

You can only install OS X over a server running OS X Server. If you don't have access to an Apple server then you cannot install over a network.
If you have access to another Mac with a good DVD drive it is possible to use Target Disk Mode to do what you want.
