M2T Files in FCP

I'm currently editing on FCP 7. I just downloaded a plugin from Sony that should allow me to use M2T files. I have a friend who has downloaded all of the files onto an external drive using his PC. Will I be able to copy the M2T files over onto my computer and begin editing them?
Thanks.

Ideally, you should capture the footage using the system that you will be editing on.
Final Cut Pro works with QuickTime .mov files. Your friends PC probably converts the camera's footage to .avi files.
The external drive is probably USB based. USB transfers data in packets, not a constant stream. That won't cut it for video editing, you need at least a FireWire connected drive.
The drive is also most likely formatted in Windows FAT 16 or FAT 32. Both of those have file size limits of 2 and 4 GB respectively. Anything larger is broken into segments. This can be very unreliable and cause problems with FCP. Also, losing one file segment makes the others unusable.
Then again and given a miracle, it might all work wonderfully.

  • M2t files in FCP X?

    Hello Tom or Other,
We are using a Data Video HD production kit with hard drives and it records to M2t files. FCP X will not see these files. We would like to be able to join the clips from the hard drive and then import them into FCP X. Any suggestions?
    Thanks,

  • Advice on using .m2ts files in FCP 6.0.6

    Hi All,
A client just handed me a usb hard drive with a bunch of files transferred from a sony hdr-sr5. Each folder has a 3 files with .m2ts, .modd, and .moff extensions. I'm not sure how they did the transfer, but I'm guessing it wasn't with video editing in mind. I need to use the footage in a normal SD project to go on a DVD. I had originally thought that I could use the Log and Transfer window to bring the footage in, but trying to do that brings up an error dialog - something about incorrect format for the media...
I've seen some other posts about using mpegstreamclip, but everytime I open up the .m2ts files the program crashes right after it puts up the window of the video. I also saw posts about using Toast 9 to convert and I did a quick test and was able to convert one of the files. I selected DV/DVPRO and the export format and did get a usable file, obviously squeezed though.
So I guess my question is - is there a better way than using Toast to get this footage ingested in a format I can use? Or if Toast is the best method what settings should I use? When Toast opens up the .m2ts file it indicates that it is H.264/1440x1080 29.97fps.
I would appreciate any guidance anyone could provide.
    Thanks,
    Chris

  • .m2ts files into fcp?

    dual 2.7 g5 fcp 6.03 mac osx 10.4.11
I have video files with this extension (.m2ts). video was shot on a sony avchd camera and imported into a pc computer using nero software. I am trying to convert these files for editing in FCP on my mac. I am not having any luck even playing these files, let alone converting them. I have tried the following methods:
changing the extension to just .m2t
    VLC
    compressor
    mpeg streamclip
    clipwrap
    WMV
    QT
any ideas? anyone familiar with what nero does to these poor video files?
any help would be much appreciated.

You need an Intel Mac to use these files as they are a flavor of AVCHD. Here is some useful information: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=305997
I just found this tool - http://www.shedworx.com/?q=volmac-home I have not tried it yet, but this may be your solution. It looks like it's universal binary, so you may have some success on your G5.
Post back and let us know if it works!

  • Does the QT MPEG2 upgrade allow for the use of m2t files in FCP?

I just noticed the product the Apple store - and since I'm on the way to return a Firestore FS4..... Will this upgrade allow FCP to edit m2t?

Thanks gents - I heard the same rumor today from Focus' technical support - they are waiting for the QT patch to test and issue a firmware upgrade for the Firestore units, but they didn't expect a solution until April. sigh I had hoped the upgrade was new, and this was the software they were waiting for.

  • MPEGstreamclip corrupts m2t files translating them into Quicktime for FCP

Recently purchased and tested the Firestore FS-4. Had no problems whatsoever capturing the clips perfectly as m2t files in the FS-4.
But when I run those m2t files through MPEGstreamclip to translate them into Quicktime files so FCP can read them, the clips get corrupted.
The translated QT files seem speeded-up as though I had been recording through my Sony Z1U at high speed / fast forward speed. Please see the file in question, pay close attention to how the cars go by at top speed in the middle of the clip:
    http://www.joric.com/freewayclip.mov
No problems with the m2t files, the problems occur after those files get translated into QT files.
Is MPEG streamclip the problem? Is there any other solution for translating m2t to Quicktime other than MPEGstream clip???
    Desperate to find a solution.
    - Nicholas

So, I take it QT Pro will not handle m2t files? I just downloaded Streamclip today, and it worked just fine for my application (demux mpeg-2 file). If you are desparate, as you say, you could try SnapzPro by Amborsia Software. (I have no relationship with them--other than being a customer.) You can capture the video going to your monitor and save it in any QT format your system can handle. It only works with certain video cards, so make sure you can use it before you purchase--but I'm pretty sure there's a trial version. So why does this Firestore save in m2t format?

  • Batch renaming of m2t files from compact flash card

I just upgraded from FCE to FCP. I wonder if there is a way to rename m2t files captured from a CF card, either in the log&capture window or directly after that, in the browser? Now I have different cards with the same file name beginning (e.g. 00_) and that makes it impossible to sort them logically in a bin, even when I chose recording time and date as a criterium.

Update, I hooked up an external Powered USB port and plugged my card reader into it. When I run it this way, it works fine. It seams that I am having a power problem with my USb port when hooking up the non-powered device to the ports. What would cause my ports not to power my non-powered devices....software....hardware...? Profiler shows USB ports as 500 power.

  • Does Final Cut X recognize .m2t files?

I am hesitant to upgrade to Final Cut X, the version of Final Cut Express I am using right now can not recognize .m2t files from a memory recording unit. Anybody knows if Final Cut X does??

SORRY  ........  My original answer was  about  .mts files which I was getting confused with .m2t.
.m2t files are from HDV tape footage and yes, FCP X imports them straight in without transcoding to anything else.
So you will be able to use your HDV footage natively in FCP X. (I do!)

  • How to ingest Canon MXF files into FCP 7

All afternoon I've been trying to figure out how to get Final Cut Pro 7 to recognize .mxf files generated by a Canon FS-CV hard drive, without much luck. This device has 3 options of format: .m2t, .mxf and Quicktime. I've found that the Quicktime files are not openable by Quicktime Pro 7.7 and gives me the bewildering error
"An invalid public movie atom was found in the movie."
Okay, so that's not working, let's try Plan B. Since I have a P2 camera, .mxf is a familiar sight so I tried that one. L&T doesn't recognize anything about it, so that's a no-go. The only reliable workflow I've found so far is to transcode the .m2t files to ProRes using Mpeg Streamclip. Okay, that works, but is that the only one of these that'll work with FCP? Quicktime format seemed like a no-brainer. Why won't it open and/or play? I've Googled and Googled and have found plenty of people asking this question but no useful answers so far. And why doesn't FCP Log & Transfer recognize these .mxf files? If Canon has a special plugin for this, I haven't been able to find it through the byzantine maze they call a web site.
    Any suggestions are welcomed.

You're searching for the wrong device. It's a recorder made by Focus Enhancements, not Canon. Try

The thing records HDV so see what happens when you try to use those conventional HDV presets.
    Native MXF HDV Support
With the FS-CV, you can record native MXF HDV 720p 30 and 1080i 50/60 clips and import them into Avid Xpress Pro, Avid Media Composer, or Avid NewsCutter for editing.
    Native QuickTime HDV Support
With the FS-CV, you can record 1080i 50/60/25f/24f/30f or 720p 30 clips as native QuickTime HDV. The FS-CV extracts and decodes the audio from the incoming HDV stream, combines it with the video stream, and wraps it as a QuickTime HDV file. When recording is complete, your QuickTime HDV file can be imported directly into Final Cut Pro—no capture or conversion is required.

Hey everyone! I trying to work with a .m2t file of HD footage I've downloaded, I can't seem to open it with Final Cut or Motion, what will I need to do to access this file? Can anyone help!? Thank you

Use MPEG Streamclip to demux/convert the m2t file(s) into whatever format matches your FCP Sequence settings.

FCP doesn't like mpeg2 transport streams. You might give ClipWrap a chance to do the conversion. They have a free trial. If it works, the full version is something like $50.

  • FCPX 10.1 won't see .m2ts files

I read that FCPX now supports import of .mts/.m2ts files. I use a SONY Z7 recording to the CF card. But in FCPX 10.1, the files are still grayed out in the import window. Any ideas please?

    Hi Russ
QT 7 wont open them, it just reports "not a video file".
MPEG Streamclip is happy to deal with them, so I have opened 1 in that and then opened a "show stream info" window for you - here is the grab of that:
you can see in the right-hand window that these are .m2t files, and MPEG Streamclip confirms this.
Here is a grab of the "Import Media" window from FCPX 10.1:
FCP 7 is happy to read these and just converts them to HDV spec. MOVs.
    Thanks for your time.

  • Importing M2T Files

I am doing a project for a friend and picked up all the video files the other day. It was a 6 hour drive to get them. Now I am home and ready to start and I notice they are M2T files... How the heck do I get these in FCP??
    Help!!
    Thanks!

    Ahhh....
Type "M2T" in the search window of this forum and read all the goodness about this format. Bottom line is that you will need software to convert this to an editable format. Toast 10, Voltaic, Clipwrap.
Be surprised. FCP doesn't work with every format in existence. Especially if it isn't QT based.

  • Conforming in HDV:can I save on hd the m2t file instead to send to camera ?

    Hello!
I use a Sony HVR V1 and FCP 6 to edit HDV footage.
My Sony PlayStation 3 handles mpeg 2 files very well.
I acquire with FCP by firewire, I edit and after conforming I use print to video to export to camera.
After I use Apple DVHSCap to get from camera the m2t file , I rename it to m2v and I put it on the PS3.
Can I avoid to export to camera and to re-acquire from camera ?? Can I save the file m2t that creates FCP after conforming on Hard Disk instead to send it to the camcorder ?
For me is important to get native m2t file to obtain higher quality.
A question: why a m2v file on Mac with VLC is not very smooth like on PS3 ?? On PS3 is true smooth, on Mac is choppy and I see the artifacts of interlacing.
Excuse me if my english is not too good
    Thank you in advance

    your workflow is little confusing...
m2t is a transport stream, which contains both video and audio multiplexed into one file. m2v is an elementary stream, containing video only. You are not accomplishing anything by changing the extension to m2v.
The quality of the video is not in the extension, it is in the encoding. When you export to the camera in HDV mode, you are letting the camera encode back to mpeg2. Don't know how much control you have over the encoding process there. YOu are most likely bound by the presets the camera has. If you use Compressor you can encode to mpeg2 m2v, mpeg2 m2t, mpeg2 with layer1 audio program stream, and many others.
I would read up on video compression both in your manuals and on the web. There is a lot to know about it to get good results.
Don't judge the quality of the video on your computer screen. You should plug your computer into the television if you don't have an external video monitor, and compare the two then...
