M3u Playlist Importing

Just downloaded itunes for the first time and now need to import all my playlists into it.
They were created mostly using WinAmp and are in m3u format, when I right click them and select itunes to play, nothing happens. If I drag and drop them into the itunes Playlists section, the name of the playlist appears, but nothing more happens and if I click on it it just allows me to change the name.
The playlists are all linked to mp3s on my PC.

I think you're going to have to try something like M3U2iTunes
I haven't tried it personally, since I don't have any m3u playlists to import into itunes; but from the description of your issue, this should do the trick. Since it always names the playlist the same ting every time, you'll have to rename it on import, I think...but still a lot faster than building them by hand in iTunes.

Winamp m3u playlists imported into iTunes are empty

I've switched from Winamp (PC) to iTunes 9 for Mac. I'd like to import my old playlists, which are in m3u format. I select Library > Import Playlist, navigate to the desired playlist, and iTunes adds it, but when I click on it in iTunes there are no songs listed.
For example, here are the first five lines of a m3u playlist I'd like to import:

Once imported, I open "iTunes Music Library.xml" and the entry for the imported playlist is just this:

I thought this may be because the songs themselves are on an external drive, so I tried manually editing the paths in the m3u file, but none of the variations I've tried have made any difference.

Okay, I got this to work. Here's the format that did it:
/Volumes/Maxtor/MP3/Artists/Alternative/Elliott Smith/Either_Or/Elliott SmithEither_Or_12Say Yes.mp3
Notice that I had to switch from \ to /. I also had to include the /Volumes reference.
iTunes tolerates the "#EXTINF:139" types of tags, but it screws up the title names. I'll just write a script to remove all those lines and reverse the slash orientation.

Should work with Soundiiz, because you can upload/drag & drop .m3u files there as well. Another one would be PlaylistConverter, UseSpotify and Ivy which can import plain text lists as well as iTunes playlists and CSV files. I admit that I did not test this myself though, but here are the necessary links:

How do I import existing .m3u playlists to the Zen Mic

I imported all of my PC-based .m3u playlists into the MediaSource Organizer. The playlist names now appear under "My Playlists" in the Organizer, but I can't import them into the player! When I double click an imported playlist nothing happens and when I trie to drag and drop them to the player's playlist folder it freezes up for 30 seconds but nothing happens.

Importing multiple m3u playlists to iTunes

Hi,
I just downloaded the new iTunes 7. I was hoping that now I can import multiple m3u playlists to iTunes. I have a big collection of mp3 and m3u files and the lack of a way to import the playlists makes iTunes pretty much unusable and the prospect of buying an iPod remote.
The Import dialog allows me to choose only one file. If I drag and drop more than one m3u files to iTunes, it just merges the playlists into one (this is a VERY stupid design if you ask me.)
I am dissapointed that it seems this is unchanged in the new version.
Please someone tell me that there's a way to do this.

A playlist is simply a list of songs.
In order for iTunes to put a song on a playlist, it must be in the library.
I don't quite understand what you mean. But iTunes does put the songs in an imported m3u playlist in the library and create an iTunes playlist. The problem is that there is no way to import multiple m3u playlists at the same time while keeping the lists separeate. Right now, it merges the lists into one.

I cannot import m3u playlists

When I try to import a m3u playlist into iTunes using File/Library/Import Playlist, the playlist is imported but his empty. It seems to be related to the update to 10.4. Does anybody know if there's an issue with this? Is Apple working on a fix?

I'm struggling with this problem as well. The "file://locahost/m:" prefix works for me. (All my music is on Linux machines and is made available by Samba to my last Windoze PC (which I must keep for iTunes).)
I noticed something else:
While testing, I used a playlist that was already in iTunes. That existing iTunes playlist is kept in a directory (Music) within the playlist area. Whenever I import a unchanged M3U playlist, the imported M3U playlist will silently be ignored and the existing iTunes list is 'used' instead. The imported M3U playlist will show up as an empty list...
This threw me off - I was thinking there was something wrong with the pathnames I tried.
It's actually OK - now I can just drag my 60 Music and 20 Speech playlists and iTunes will 'compare' them. The ones that turn out to be different will show up outside the existing directories (Music, Speech).
It would be nice(r) if the normal DOS style pathnames would be accepted again (m:\genre\artist\album\track.mp3).

Import m3u playlist into creative zen V p

Hi,
Quick & dirt: does exist any way to import an m3u playlist into my zen V+?
I tried the "import external playlist" feature in mediaorganizer, but when I try to transfer an error message is prompted: "not enough space on device", it's like the MO is trying to phisically transfer the files into the player rather the playlist, wich is supposed to be an index of files...
How do I do transfer just the playlist? Am I allowed to perform such operation?

At this point I'm start to thinking that importing an esternal playlist ain't the right way to create and manage a playlist on zen V.
Well, just to know: what do you folks use to index / group certain songs in your library? I use media monkey to manage my huge library (50 Gb circa), and i rather use one single mediaplayer just not to mess with such library than -say- media monkey *and* creative mediaplayer.
Also i'm using smart SW named 'music IP mixer' to easily create playlists on the go in a nice way, even nicer would be to use the same playlists on my zen, but I didn't work it out since.
And, talking about nice things, that would be fantastic if someone from the tech staff would nicely answer to this very simple question: am I allowed to usem3u indexes on my zen V+?

Importing multiple m3u playlists and automatic adding

I just bought a new ipod so i'm trying to get my media player library to itunes. I create a lot of playlist, all in m3u format and i want them to be compatible with itunes. The only thing I managed to do is to import 1 playlist at a time, selecting them all doesn't work. Moving them from explorer to itunes doesn't work either.
is there a way to get all my playlists in Itunes in 1 go? Also is there some sort of 'watch folder' option that automaticly adds new playlists? As a die hard WMP user I kind of assumed that this was standard..

I DJ with a program called Traktor. One feature I use is it's ability to export a "history" file as an iTunes playlist. This means I can keep a log in iTunes of what I've played on specific nights.
I'm just trying out another DJing program by M-Audio called "Torq". This also creates history files, but they are in the "m3U" format.
So.... is it possible to get these m3u playlists in to iTunes?

I've just tried the "import" command from within iTunes.
This adds the playlist to iTunes, but the playlist then has nothing in it.
.....think I need to speak to the guys at M-Audio.

.m3u / playlist & itunes madness

Here's something that I thought would be rather straight-forward but has consumed me for the last several days...
As a small holiday gift, I gave people a mix CD of music I made in GarageBand, something I've done every year. But this year I got the bright idea to give out a DVD of the mp3 files or in some cases a .dmg/.zip so A) I didn't have to burn a bunch of discs and B) thought it'd be easier for recipients just to import the tracks into iTunes.
What I didn't expect was, even with the tracks numbered sequentially 01-30 before the file names, they would not import in the proper order. So, I did some research and realized .m3u playlists were the key - not knowing iTunes can't natively export playlist files and most of the scripts/applets I found didn't work due to age/compatibility.
So... created a .m3u playlist file with all the file names, double-click that but it still only imports 25 out of the 30 mp3s into the LIBRARY and does not create a playlist in the sidebar! Which means, my non-tech savvy recipients will have to be coached into grouping the tracks or by using smart playlist by date added -- now we're getting in way over the heads of my friends and if I ever want them to listen to the music I created, I have to make this super, one-click easy for them.
Why is this so complicated? I just want to give music files to friends, have it import into itunes in the correct desired order, and make it a playlist in the sidebar!
I'm also frustrated that my homemade .m3u playlist file only imports 25 out of the 30 tracks for some reason. I can find no logic as to why it leaves out five.
Can anybody out there offer advice/solution(s)? Thanks in advance and Happy New Year!

Converting WinAmp (M3U) Playlists Into iTunes (XML) Playlists

Hi. I was wondering if someone could help me out with suggestions on converting my old WinAmp (.m3u) playlists into usable iTunes (.xml) playlists?
I have Windows XP Pro (with the latest Windows updates), and a brand new iPod 160 Gig Classic.
I have used WinAmp as my media player for the longest time. The reason that I haven't created playlists in iTunes is because:
It took me years to customize these Winamp playlists exactly how I want them (you know how that is).
iTunes is a huge program that tends to takes up too many system resources on my PC. I have an older PC, and don't have the time or money to invest in a new system, copy files, set it up, etc.
iTunes somehow modifies an mp3 whenever it is played in iTunes ( I can see that it has been modified in the "Date Modified" column, where my mp3 files are located).
Historically - up until the last year or so, iTunes has not had too much of a problem faithfully importing my Winamp playlists into iTunes (to be transferred onto my iPod).
So, I just got off the phone with Apple Technical Support, Tier 2. I told him that I had the latest version of iTunes (version 10), installed yesterday.
I successfully imported my 90 Gigs of mp3's into the iTunes "Music Library" without a problem.
The problem arose today when I tried to import one of my WinAmp (.m3u) playlists into iTunes, so that I could copy the playlist over onto my iPod. I've done this dozens of times. I've already tried uninstalling and then reinstalling iTunes.
Like I said, I really want to keep these playlists it took a long time to customize the occurrence and frequency of favorite mp3's into those playlists.
The technician said that the latest release of iTunes won't work with Winamp (m3u) playlists. I asked him if he thought it would work again if I downloaded an older version of iTunes. He said that with the new iPod Classic that I have, it will not work with older versions of iTunes (I have no idea why), so that's out. He suggested Googling an "m3u to xml file converter."
I checked on Google and saw a lot of programs that will convert xml files to m3u file format (for reasons unknown to me), but I haven't had any luck online finding a file converter that will faithfully convert my WinAmp (.m3u) playlists TO iTunes (.xml) playlists to use instead, and make iTunes run smoother. Any suggestions?*
* Keep in mind that I'd really prefer to convert my m3u playlists, rather than create all new iTunes playlists from scratch.

ITunes Playlist Import empty?

Hi Guys,
i wrote a Powershell script that creates several m3u playlists for my mp3s.
I tried to import that playlist in iTunes but it's empty.
Then I tried to create a m3u playlist with exact the same content manually, aaand it worked...
Do you have an idea how to solve my problem?

I suspect your Powershell script isn't making an m3u file that iTunes is completely happy with. As I recall iTunes wants absolute file paths whatever the m3u specification might say.

M3U Playlist doubles the song

Hi, I used to save playlist from Winamp in M3U format.
When I slide my playlists in iTunes one by one, iTunes adds all of the songs again to my library. The playlist are based on songs all contained in my library. My library contains all of my 7600 songs and I use playlists to filter those down.
I have tried figuring out this for a couple months now... I can't believe I am the only one stuck with this problem!
I noticed that when I slide the playlist into iTunes, it would populate the Name field with $artist$ - $title$ sort of format instead of simply $title$. All of my tags are correct and are displaying correctly in iTunes except for those "dupe-added" from M3U playlists

I'm getting the same problem.
I'm just moving over to iPod/iTunes from Windows Media player and another mp3 player. I have all my playlists in .m3u format. There are 1000's of songs in some of them so deleting the duplicates isn't an option. I also tried the method suggested on this post - Preferences, Advanced, "Copy files to iTunes music folder..." and unfortunately this didn't work either.
When I import m3u files into iTunes, it creates duplicate entries in my library. If I close and then re-open iTunes, the imported playlist will lose every song in the playlist and give me a message: '+The song "Song name" could not be used because the original file could not be found. Would you like to locate it?+' Sure I could locate every song but when there are 1000's this isn't an option.
I'm hunting around for a solution but are yet to find one.
The only suggestion that sounds promising is:
"+I had to import the .m3u playlists into iTunes (which created duplicates and is extremely slow), then export those playlists as .txt files (which is fast), then wipe the iTunes library and rebuild it, then import the .txt playlists (which is also fast and did not create duplicates), then restore the iPod and reload everything onto it. I haven't tried this yet as it might take a while.

M3U Playlist format/encoding

I have been trying to get a m3u playlist that I created to work properly with Strobe Media Playback, but have run into a small issue. All of my files reside on my Amazon AWS S3 bucket. I've created the F4M files for each file, but I received the following comment from a support team member at Amazon.
"Most of our customers have good experiences with jwplayer or flowplayer but in this case the issue I think is the format specification of the M3U files which might lend to bad URLS, if you can modify strobe code, you can have it write to a textbox all the points and where it is failing as like I said I am not a strobe expert."
Is there a specific encoding that must be used when creating these playlists, or is it enough to simply begin with #EXTM3U?

Can Firefox play music from a .m3u playlist?

I have a webpage with a .m3u playlist, and Firfox asks for an add but says that no add-on is available.

So I guess it's Windows Media Player. The original script I found had options for IE and other browsers, but I couldn't work out to display the controls in the IE option, so settled for a single embedded player which works with 4 browsers, although not as neatly as I would like.
