M4v format and Quicktime pro 7 compatability

I have quicktime 7 pro on my Vista computer and everytime I try and play a downloaded m4v file it starts then hangs and causes all kinds of problems till I close it. Is m4v supposed to play on quicktime 7 pro. It was downloaded from a site that used to download in mp4 and they played with no problem now their latest downloads are m4v and Im having all kinds of problem? Please let me know if its supposed to work or something else may be causing the problem. Thank you.

The .m4v file extension is usually associated with the iTunes app and a double click should launch iTunes.
Try using the File / Open File... (Control-o) of QuickTime to view it.

  • FCP 3.0 and QUICKTIME PRO - compatable?

I am running FCP 3.0 on a G5 under SYSTEM 10.3.5 and everything is stable.
Now if I upgrade to the NEW QUICKTIME PRO am I in for any problems?

If I remember correctly, FCP 3 ran fine under 10.3.9. However, FCP 3 will not run under 10.4 unless you do an upgrade install of 10.4 over 10.3 with FCP 3 already installed.
There has been enough gnashing of teeth and cries of pain from folks wanting to run FCP4.5 under 10.4/QT7, I shudder to think of the potential backward compatibility issues with FCP3.
To the OP, your best bet is to stay in 10.3 and QT 6 until you are ready to go to the current version of FCP.
    Good luck,

  • Converting AVI files to M4V files in Quicktime Pro

    Hello,
I am trying to convert AVI files to M4V files in Quicktime Pro.
I open the file in the player, click Save As, click the setting, and it goes through the process and stalls with 5 seconds left. Anybody experience this?
    Thanks, Steve

I open the file in the player, click Save As, click the setting, and it goes through the process and stalls with 5 seconds left.
If you are really using QT 7 Pro under Leopard, then be advised that the "Save As..." does not trascode AVI content (whatever its compression formats) to H.264/AAC in an M4V container but merely places the original content in an MOV file container. In this case, if the file stalls in the last 5 seconds, then the problem is usually associated with a problem of trascoding the audio or a problem writing/closing the MOV file. This could be caused by anything from a lack of audio codec support, a component conflict, or File level Finder problem.
If you are actually using QT X under Snow Leopard, then the "Save As... > Movie" option functions essentially the same as the QT 7 Pro "Save As..." option already described above. Selecting one of the other options that do transcode the content may have the same problem described above or may encounter a "bug" which causes the final file to "disapprear"/never be made visible at the Finder level.
If using QT 7 Pro under either Leopard or Snow Leopard, ensure that the compression formats used in the AVI container are actually supported by your system configuration. If you have recently upgraded your OS from Leopard to Snow Leopard, you may wish to re-install your AVI support component(s) and ensure there are not known or obvious component conflicts. If using QT X under Snow Leopard, you may wish to install QT 7 (if you have a "Pro" key" or try the free MPEG Streamclip as a QT 7 "Pro" alternative.

  • I am traveling with my macbook pro and I forgot to install final cut express and quicktime pro before I left. How can I in a way download them for free on my laptop from where I am

I am traveling with my macbook pro and I forgot to install final cut express and quicktime pro before I left. How can I in a way download them for free on my laptop from where I am? I need them and don't want naturally to buy them again!!!
    Thank you

Assuming you purchased QT Pro, you can always download it again at no extra charge by logging in to your Apple account.
Regarding FCE, there is no way to download & install the product.  You need an original FCE install disk and your FCE serial number.
Final Cut Pro X (aka FCPX) can be purchased & downloaded from the App Store.

  • Iphone 4 retina and Quicktime "pro" 7 not compatable? *** !

I am disgusted that apple would sell quicktime pro (7) and advertise that it works for the iphone when the iphone 4 has been out for a year now and QT7 does NOT support the retina display resolution (920 x 640). Only the much older lower resolutions are supported for the iphone 4. Also the h264 compressor apple uses is just terrible. Heck even Videora has a far better H264 compressor and its free !
Steve Jobs, you should be ashamed for STEALING my money!
In all honesty, Convert your mov files with Videora for free and they will look 10 x better than any quicktime "pro" version,  do not ever purchase quicktime pro as it is a complete waste of your money and amounts to nothing more that a THEFT of your monies ! I should have gone with the reviews as most are clearly very negative on this old product but I didnt think apple could make something this terrible, hmmm, but they did.

I'm glad yer iPhone plays 720p just like mine but that is not the problem I am having. When you find out why qt pro 7 does NOT support exporting ( using the supplied iphone or h264 settings) the iPhone 4 retina resolution then please respond with the correct reason.
You are obviously using the built-in preset options and not custom settings. You are forgetting that Apple's primary purpose when creating pre-sets is to ensure compatibility. These options are programmed for multi-generation devices and, only support, the quality/settings that are compatible with the least capable device. As such, the TV preset is limited to 960x540 display resolution at 30/29.97 fps and a maximum video data rate of 5.0 Mbps. In a similar manner, the iPhone pre-set is limited to 1620 macroblocks/frame (usually a 720x480 or 720x576 max matrix) and 1.0 Mbps video data to maintain compatibility with all previous iPhone models. If you want to make the most of your device's particular capabilities, then either use custom settings or chose a different device pre-set whose output more closely matches what you want to use on your device if you want to use QT 7 Pro to perform your conversions. If you want to use a different converter, than, by all means, feel free to do so. However, since the source of your problem is in your work flow and not the product, I was merely attempting to point out the fact that your previous comments were unjustified.
As far as editing softwares and hardwares go I have everything from autodesk flame/ inferno down to pro and everything in between. Again please respond to my simple question only, why does qt7 not support the latest iPhone 4 higher retina display resolution? As opposed to older lower resolutions.
Let's hope you fully know how to take advantage of all of these hardware/software devices/applications. If you really feel Apple should support each device and generation of device with a separate entity pre-set as created and sold since being released, then contact Apple HERE and register your total dissatisfaction regarding each and every product not to your liking. You, of course, are entitled to your own opinions. Please extend the same courtesy to others.
Qt7 still ***** and is a total waste of money as people can do everything it does better and for free. Screw apple!
I might agree in some instances. For transcoding, I tend to prefer the X.264 codec with custom settings for more extensive analysis, better vector motion detection/rendering, removal of duplicated frames when applying detelecine, and a limited combined deinterlace/decomb filtering option. However, try aging, masking, layering, blending, picture-in-picture/picture-with-picture, and similar compositing options in a "free" utility.

  • Final Cut Pro 4.5 and Quicktime 7 compatibility issues. Error 39!

I see some people saying Quicktime 7 is not compatible with Final Cut 4.5 and some saying it is.
I upgraded to 10.3.9 and then Quicktime 7 and I started getting error 39 at this one spot in my timeline and then crashing if I tried to play just a few seconds ahead of that spot. I tried trashing the prefs but that didn't do any good. The individual files play fine outside the timeline so it isn't corrupt media. I tried rerendering the effects that are at that point but that didn't help. I tried copying the entire timeline to a new sequence and that didn't help.
The strange thing was that when I took the part of the movie that was having trouble and deleted it from the timeline it still got error 39 when just playing over the empty timeline where the media used to be! This led me to realize that the problem lay in some Quicktime audio effects I had about a second in front ot the error 39 spot. I took off the effects from that audio but it didn't help. Then I deleted that audio from the timeline and just pasted it back in from the original clip and then it finally got to working.
Now I know nothing about the software, but I thought there might be some connection between the fact that I had effects that FCP labels as "quicktime effects" on there from my days in Quicktime 6.5, then upgraded to Q7, and perhaps those old effects don't work in Q7? I don't know.
So, my immediate problem is solved but I thought this experience may be of use to someone else. And perhaps some compatibility issues can be brought to light.

I would assume the Software Update program has sufficient logic within it to detect that my friend is running Final Cut Pro 4.0 and it would therefore be disastrous to install QuickTime 7.3, thus removing QuickTime 7.3 from her list of suggested updates. Would someone at Apple please fix this?
Sorry, but Quicktime is a component for SO MANY things, not just FCP. Sorry, but the OS doesn't detect that older versions of software are on there and won't be compatible...this is where you need to have a little knowledge. And sorry, but you need to have a little knowledge. If things are working, DO NOT UPGRADE unless it has been tested and cleared. In the case of FCP 4...it has not.
Rule of thumb...if you use older software, you have to stick to older versions of the OS and components that that software relies on.
How many things were broken with Vista? So many that the HUGE community let out a cry and now XP is available again configured on machines or as a stand alone buy. And no, Vista didn't warn that certain applications wouldn't work either.
You gotta research and find out. This place here...this forum...is a FANTASTIC place to find stuff like this out.
BTW...Apple doesn't read these forums, only us users. Gotta submit feedback here:

  • Exporting videos to Ipod format qith QuickTime Pro

    Hey guys,
i just recently bought an Ipod Video, and i use Quicktime Pro to convert videos to ipod format for it. My problem is that the converted video (M4V) never has any audio. Wheather i try listening to is on my computer or on the ipod, no audio at all. Did anyone experience the same thingf? Does anyone know what i'm doing wrong, or how to fix it?
    thank you,

Open the original video in QT Player and check MovieInfo. If it says the video is a muxed mpeg then QT Player Pro will not convert the sound from such videos: QT Mpeg Limitations

  • QuickTime Movie Files Won't Convert For iPod using iTunes and QuickTime Pro

I've got a ton, and I mean a ton of QuickTime movie files of music videos that I want to convert to use on the iPod. I tried using "Convert Selection For iPod" in the Advanced Menu on iTunes, but got the following message trying convert a QuickTime file of U2's Beautiful Day:
""Beautiful Day" could not be converted because this file does not allow for saving or conversion."
I purchased QuickTime Pro hoping that the features on Pro would convert the file. When I opened the same file to convert using QuickTime Pro, "Export" under the file menu was grayed out so I couldn't select it.
You'd think that an APPLE QuickTime Movie file that can be played on APPLE'S iTunes and APPLE'S QuickTime Player would be able to be converted to be used in APPLE'S iPod player. (Anybody notice how APPLE is capitalized to point out that the the hardware, software and file formats are ALL Apple?)
Instead I wasted money buying QuickTime Pro when it won't do what I specifically bought it for. Now I have all these QuickTime files which won't play on the iPod.
Can anybody provide some help or assistance on how to accomplish what I'm trying to accomplish???

If the file doesn't allow saving or conversions then it is protected by DRM (Fairplay).
Nothing can help QuickTime Pro convert protected files.

  • Final Cut Pro HD and Quicktime Pro????

Can anyone tell me if I need to have Quicktime Pro in order to be able to edit movie files in FCP HD?
The Quicktime files I have in my Capture Scratch are on an external hardrive and WERE CAPTURED FROM A COMPUTER USING QUICKTIME PRO. My Powerbook has Quicktime 7.0.4 and when I try to play the capture scratch media, it plays for a second and then stops. It's impossible to edit in FCP HD as well.
Any expertise would be greatly appreciated!! Thanks for any help.

You don't need QT PRO in order to edit with FCP. All QT PRO is is unlocked features of QT, the ability to export footage in multiple formats, download QT Movies and add filters to movies you open.
If something was captured with a machine with QT Pro you should be able to edit them fine. It depends on what format the files are that you are trying to edit.
FYI, movies captured with QT generally don't work in FCP. They aren't an editable format. They are mpeg-2 or h.264 which are meant for direct web posting or DVD burning, but not editing in FCP. If you want to capture footage for editing, capture using FCP.

  • Converting Movie to Ipod format thru Quicktime Pro

I purchase the QuicktimePro Registration key for Windows(XP), to convert movies(mp4) format to Ipod(30gb).
QuicktimePro DOES NOT convert mpeg-4 to Ipod format, m4v or mov? I know Quicktime pro is only a few dollars, but I spent for something that I did not enjoy. A very useless feature.
Please correct me if I'm wrong. thank you.

Hello Sujay, are you a Quicktime Tech support? sorry it was too late when I found out that I posted my issue in the wrong Forum, this is my first time, I apologize.
Sorry too, that I did not explain in full detail. Yes, I followed the xact instruction in the manual, followed one of the QT-Tech Support, he even gave me a supporting/reading materials related to my inquiry, I have 2 co-workers behind my shoulders who tried to help but no luck.
My OS is XP, Quicktime plays all my movies(mp4)format without a problem, but when it comes to exporting, (Movie to iPod 320X240)the exported movie is successful but still in mp4 format, instead of m4v I believe.
Did you have a successful conversion? Can you tell me where my missing piece is, please? Thank you with your full attention.

  • Quicktime X and Quicktime Pro

Ok before I had installed Snow Leopard I had quicktime pro. Now that I installed the program I can no longer view trailers on the Apple Website or do anything I could do with pro. I can not even purchase pro for X apparently now. What Can be done about this? or when will pro be available. Apples website as well as all other websites do not appear to support Quicktime X at all at this time, so I would really like a solution ASAP.
I use Quicktime Pro daily and now that I am without it again this is really not the time for me to be without it. This problem needs to be resolved immediately.
Can anyone in Genius bar or other apple techs look into this?

I just talked to techs at Apple and here is the skinny on Quicktime Pro: As far as the normal user is concerned, Quicktime Player 7 and Quicktime X have two things in common. They are both named Quicktime and they both play .mov files. Quicktime Player 7 can be upgraded to Pro and then can edit and export movies. Quicktime X, as of Sep 29, 2009 can not be upgraded to Pro. It can only Trim files and play them. It's just a player.
If you have installed Quicktime X and Quicktime 7 has disappeared, you may find Quicktime 7 in the utilities folder OR on your Snow Leopard install disc. You might want to also install Rosetta from that disc so you can use older apps like Appleworks 6.
If you are adventurous and would like to edit more file formats, you can get a free download called "Perian - the Swiss Army knife for Quicktime." Of course, you are on your own with this app. Use all precautions for unknown software. I downloaded Perian and can now play .flv files on Quicktime.

  • What formats will Quicktime Pro play

I just installed Quicktime Pro on Win XP, and I can't get it to open any format, including wmv! Is there any video format that Quicktime will open without buying their MPEG2 codec?

This page includes a list of formats that QT will open.
    http://www.apple.com/quicktime/player/specs.html
Note, however, that some of those formats are container formats that can have content compressed with many different compression formats and specific decompressors may be needed to be able to play a given file. This is especially true of avi and mov formats. If a file does not play then try opening MovieInfo in the Windows menu to see what compression was used. You may need to then search the internet for a decompressor for the file.
QT does not open wmv files, The mpeg2component is only used for playback of mpeg2 files so don't buy it unless you want to play that format in QT Player.
