M4v- MP4 (for mp4 playing HD)

Hi
Is there anyway to either play the itunes store M4V video files as MP4s, or a way to convert them to mp4s so that they will play on my harddrive?
I bought the hard drive knowing that it played MP4s (which was what i thought that the itunes store was, and searches ahve led me to find that m4v is basically mp4), but not realising the fact that it was a slightly different format.
Is this hardrive now useless as anything other than a standard harddrive for me?

Sorry, but I'm not clear on what you mean. A "hard drive" is a data storage device; in and of itself, it runs no software and plays no videos nor music. A hard drive is part of a computer and bears the same rough relationship to the rest of the computer as does a storage cabinet to a desk in an office. You might find this information helpful:

You'll need to be more clear about what it is you're trying to accomplish before anyone here can offer much assistance. But I can tell you this: a video purchased from the iTunes Store can only be played in iTunes or QuickTime Player on a computer or on a video-capable iPod, an iPhone, or the Apple TV.

MP4 movies not playing on iPod with version 1.3

I have iTunes version 7.6.1.9 and iPod firmware version 1.3. I have several movies converted to MP4 format via Nero which played on the iPod just fine up until about 10 days ago. Now the MP4 movies will no longer play on the iPod, i just get a blank screen. The one movie I did convert using Handbrake to M4V format does still play on the iPod. Also I downloaded an MP4 movie from ipodarchive.com and it plays fine on iPod. All movies in all formats play fine in iTunes.
Does anyone know if there is something in one of the firmware updates which prevents the playing of MP4's converted by certain programs?

I found the same problem. It's not all mp4's, though; some of mine work perfectly. I think higher quality videos don't work, for some reason. Movies at 159 kbps and 640x480 don't work, though they used to. Movies at 79 kbps and 480x352 still work fine.

How to make mp4 for iPhone & PC?

Trying to create files for the iPhone that a PC (Mac or Windows)users can also open and view to review rough cuts. I can create a M4v file that plays on the iphone, but whenever I try a .mp4 or .mov with H.264 compression it says file type unsupported. I worry that windows users might not be able to open an M4v file without itunes installed.
Any help would be great, this is really stumping me.

I've had the same issue, and I think I found a solution. I'm trying to output one file that I can use for video podcasts, Flash players, web (pc/mac) and upload to youtube.
I found that if you use quicktime to export your uncompressed video to iPhone, and then change the .m4v suffix to .mp4, the video will successfully sync to your iPod Touch, play on the iPod Touch in Safari, and play in a Flash Player like the JWPlayer which means that it will play on a Windows machine without Quicktime (I tested).

Thumbnail images for MP4 files vanished again - how can they be restored?

My thumbnail images for MP4 files have vanished again and could you tell me how to resttore them please? I am running Windows 8.1 and IE11 Browser and use the Real Player to play these files. When I run a flash test it says one minute it is not installed in the browser and the next test confirms that it is installed. Is this a known problem with Windows and can it be fixed by adjusting a setting somewhere. Thanks for your help.

Enable Compatibility View for IE: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/internet-explorer/use-compatibility-view#ie=ie-11 and the plugin will be recognized.

Which codec converting MP4 for editing?

I did a search on this question. I have a copy of MPEG Streamclip. But exactly what codec should I use so that there is little or no loss of data? Streamclip defaults to Apple Motion JPEG A. I see all the Apple ProRes codes; and two others - Apple FCP Uncompressed 8-bit/10-bit 4:2:2. What exactly is different about these?

What are you looking to use the MP4 for as this will have a bearing on the type of MP4 codec to go for.
Motion JPEG A is an older (but still useful) codec. It's been superseded by many other MPEG formats.
ProRes is Apples latest codecs. Personally I love them. They give very good compression with very little loss in image. That's not to say there is none. ProRes422LT is one of the more lossy versions while 422HQ is the least lossy. They are aimed at 10bit video but can be used just as well for 8bit too.
Uncompressed is just what it infers. It has a lossless image but has the downside of being a large, uncompressed file size. You will also need a very fast harddrive to play this media at full rate.
My recommendation out of all of these would be ProRes422 Standard (ie, with no suffix of letters on the end). This will give you good all round performance for editing and image quality (although some high detail / high motion footage it may appear a little noisy).

FCPX 10.0.6 - why is the files transcoded as .m4v instead of .mp4 ?

Hi there,
In 10.0.4, after clicking share, the files are transcoded im mp4 format.
But now in FCPX 10.0.6 - why are the files transcoded as .m4v instead of .mp4 ?
In both instances I selected Apple devices.
I noticed both the filesize are about the same.
But the latter took so much longer to transcode.
Any ideas ?

Dropbox and converting video files is new stuff for me, so this may be something simple I am missing. I converted 3gp videos to mp4 videos and copied them into my Dropbox on my PC. As expected, the videos showed up in my Dropbox on my iPad2. When I went to play the mp4 videos on the iPad, I got the same message as I did with the 3gp videos--"enable flash". Obviously, something is wrong. How do I get these mp4 files to play?
The mp4 videos also had a narrower frame, making the people in the video look skinny. Is that typical when you convert the 3gp file to mp4?

Keynote does not run on Windows computers, therefore, convert the Keynote file to PowerPoint:

HTTP_REFERER header is missing in request for .mp4 from Safari on ipad or iphone

I just discovered that when I have a .mp4 file embedded in my webpage and I visit that page using Safari on the iPad, the request for the .mp4 is missing the referer header. This is a problem for me because I use URL Rewriting in my web.config file on IIS and I redirect requests (in which the HTTP_REFERER does not begin with my own domain name) to a no hotlink image. Safari on the iphone4 does the same thing when I visit this page--the HTTP_REFERER header in the request for the .mp4 is empty. I've had to turn my hotlinking protection for MP4 files off on my site in order for ipad/iphone to display the video on my page. If the hotlink protection (i.e., rewrite rule in my web.config) is turned on, the video does not display.
It seems like this would be a common issue because hotlink protection is commonly implemented in this manner.
Is there something I am issing? Some special way of preventing hotlinking and yet letting the mp4 content through to idevices?

I have the same issue with Safari, but with mp3 files not playing using a HTML5 player on my website. I have hotlink protection enabled and the audio plays on every other browser except Safari, so there's seems to be a problem playing any videos or mp3 files when hotlink protection is enabled.

Force mp4 videos to play in vlc web plugin.

I have, in about:preferences, set "Use VLC web plugin" as the default application for playing mp4 files, and have set media.play-stand-alone to false in about:config. However, when I open mp4 files, it plays in the firefox player, not the vlc player.
How do I remedy this situation.?

I have AFTER EFFECTS CS5. I have always used H264 to get MP4 files for my export, but I can no longer use it. I follow the exact procedures, check that the export will be in MP4 but when I say ok then it changes the file into a M4V instead of MP4. As a result I can't read this file.

Drag the files into the open iTunes window and then convert them. Some AVI files cannot be played in iTunes and you may lose the sound upon conversion; if either happens, use Perian and MPEG Streamclip respectively.

I have the same issue when I try to export it through Adobe Media Encoder. I even tried to go through using After Effects and export through Adobe Media Encoder with the same results. I'm wondering if I might be better off uninstalling then reinstalling all my adobe programs.

Best settings for mp4 video for ipod and watching on imac (apple tv)

Have a few films in mp2 format (recorded from digital tv) and want to use mpeg stream clip (1.93b version )software to convert to mp4 that will play on ipod and look ok on a imac 20'screen.
Ive converted a couple but these do not play correctly on ipod (sound ok, just a collection of still frames-prob to high a bit rate etc..)
What are everyones settings for mp4 that looks ok on 20inch screen and the small ipod screen?

I have converted some videos to mp4 and there is a choice to convert to iphone or ipod.
But what is the difference between them ?
It cant just be something simple like screen size / resolution.
Because I have some mp4 videos that will sync with itunes onto my iphone, but not onto my ipod 5th gen.

There is no difference because as you said Java is platform independenec. However, the installer is platform-dependent so we needed to package the Beans differently.
All the java classes and libraries are identical
