M4v or mov?

Fellas,
Making a movie with iMovie 08. I wonder what's the diff between m4v and a mov file. I've long been using mov, and putting the settings at best or near best quality. The mov file is about 6X the size as the m4v, but they both look the about same on TV after burning on iDVD. Am I seeing things? What's the diff?

"If it's going to be DVD-Video, then exporting a QuickTime Movie (self-contained or reference) is what you'll need for authoring in iDVD or DVD-SP. You do NOT want to use MPEG-4 because you'll only be adding more compression to the video."

  • Ipages converting videos m4v to mov?

I created an epub book using iPages and imported m4v video files into the epub. I can upload the ebook to my ipad. Then when I tried to upload it to iBookstore using iTunes, iTunes complains that the video files are mov and not m4v and would not validate the file.
Looking at the epub book, I can see that all the videos are now mov files.
How do I prevent iPages from converting them from m4v to mov and allow to validate the epub?

    Thanks for the link.
The video does not say why when I add a video.m4v video to my pages document and export it to epub, it becomes video.mov.
I would appreciate if you could explain that.
    Thanks.

  • Why does my mac turn my downloaded movies into .m4v and move it to the desktop?

For about 4 or 5 months now I have had this problem. When I doenload a picture to my macs download file the computer converts the file to .m4v and moves it to the desktop, deleting the original download. Why? I dont know what I may have downloaded, it's been a while since this started.Thanks.

Why?  Because you told it to.
Remove whatever folder action you installed on your Downloads folder.  Right-click the folder, Services >> Folder Actions Setup.
If there's no folder action, then some piece of software you installed and have running is camping on your Downloads folder and doing the conversion.
Don't bother claiming you didn't... computer software isn't magic.  The machine didn't just decide to do this one day.

  • Can't import .mov or .m4v to movie library

When I try to share my Quicktime movie with iTunes it appears in music as a  .m4v but not in movies.  Audio plays fine but there is no video.
I have tried creating the .m4v via the menu and short cut icon from QT.  I have tried using import to library and drag and drop to get the file into iTunes.
I've also tried importing as a .mov but no joy with this either.
The movie is a home recording.  Edited in FCE and then exported as a QT movie.
I am running OSX 10.7.5, QT Player 10.1 and iTunes 11.0.4
    Any ideas?

If you export from Keynote as a QuickTIme file, make sure to choose Timed Advance, not Manual Advance. iMovie will not import a manual advance track.

  • Differences between ".m4v" and ".mov"

iMovie can post straight to mobileme or export a movie as a quicktime file. In the first case iMovie creates a ".m4v" file while exporting a quicktime it creates a ".mov" file. I might be wrong but it seems to me that the ".mov" is bigger than the equivalent ".mov" and I wonder what are the differences. Is the "mov" better than "m4v"?

M4V, MP4, and MOV are simply containers. The same compressed H.264/AAC data can be contained in each.
M4V - The M4V file container is used exclusively for H.264/AAC content either protected or unprotected. Limited use of other data tracks can also be found in this container such as "Chapter" or "alternate audio" tracks. This container can also be associated with external graphic data as normally seen in iTunes when "Artwork" is added. By default, this container normally opens in iTunes when double-clicked.
MP4 - The MP4 file is much like the MP4 file container but may additionally hold MPEG4/AAC data as the primary video/audio compression format. It too may contain supplemental data tracks or be associated with external "Artwork" but, by default, opens in the QT player.
MOV - The MOV file container is a generic file container which may contain up to 99 tracks of any valid audio, video, text, "Chapter", "Tween", ""Timecode", "sprite", etc. form of data. It cannot be associated with external "Artwork" but, like M4V and MP4, can have a designated "poster" frame. Any valid file saved using the "Save As..." File option is automatically placed in the MOV file container by default regardless of its original compression format and file container type.
While there are "internal" differences, all three containers have the same basic purpose. It is likely these differences which you see when comparing "file size" even when the actual compressed audio and video data is exactly the same within the container.

  • Converting .m4v to .mov for NLEs

I have been given an .m4v video file that was created on a Mac with Final Cut Pro. I need to edit the file on my PC; I can play the file in QuickTime 7 Player on the PC but cannot import the file into any of my editing programs (Avid Media Composer v3, Adobe Premiere CS3, After Effects CS3) nor any of my conversion software (Sorensen Squeeze v5, etc.). So, I upgraded to QuickTime Pro figuring I should be able to use it to convert the file to a .mov or some other more "standard" format. I have tried every flavor of .mov (uncompressed, Avid DV Codec, etc.) and other file types as well (.avi, etc.) but everything I export fails to import into my editing applications.
Does anybody have any advice for either directly importing an .m4v in Avid or using QuickTime Pro to convert to a format I can then import? Thanks.

Does anyone know how I can batch convert them into .mov files?
No actual conversion is required unless you actually wish to re-compress the files. A bigger question would be whether or not the files contain AC3, chapter, and/or caption tracks. If so, then use QT Pro ($30) to first delete the extraneous data tracks and then use the "Save As..." option to save the H.264/AAC data tracks to an MOV file container. (NOTE: QT Pro can "parallel" process your files but not batch process them -- i.e., you can open a second, third, fourth, etc. file and start work on them while other files are being saved.)
If the MP4 or M4V file only containes H.264/AAC or MPEG-4/AAC tracks, then you can use MPEG Streamclip (free) to batch process them. Simply open the "Batch List" window, drop one or more files to the "Batch List" window, select the "Save As" option, make sure you do not select "Join" files in the next window, designate a target location for the new files, and press the "Go" button when the files are listed to the "Batch List" window.

  • M4v  to .mov conversion

I just purchased the rose bowl summary on itunes. can i convert it to a .mov file?
    thanks
    jim

The protected files can't be imported into iMovie (I guess you tried) and can't be "shared". It's part of the purchase agreement at the ITMS.
A 320X240 file will not look very good when played back on a TV.
It was a very good game. Maybe the trainer can get some other source of video that can be edited in iMovie.

  • Trouble playing.m4v movie on G5

I have a powerPC G5 1.6 GHz running OS 10.4.11 and have been sent a .m4v format movie which I have tried to play on both Quicktime and iTunes and in both cases the sound plays ok but the picture is just green. What can I d o about this? Thanks

Went to the link and downloaded the VLC software. Installed as per instructions and when I tried to run the software it gave me this message.
You cannot use the application "VLC" with this version of Mac OS X !!!!

  • .m4V files don't appear in iTunes until played from iTunes' 'Movies' folder

Some .m4v camcorder movie files (from a recent .avi conversion using Handbrake) just don't appear in my iTunes 'Movies' library until I double-click on them in the iTunes 'Movies' folder. Handbrake did the batch conversion and placed the converted files in the iTunes 'Movies' folder.
All of the converted files are visible in that 'Movies' folder of iTunes. And when I double-click them they play in an iTunes window. iTunes 'Movies' section seems unable to display them until they have first been played from the iTunes 'Movies' folder. Am I missing something about the way iTunes handles .m4v files?
Does anyone have any suggestions on how to fix this problem? Any idea what the issue might be?
    Thanks.

    Problem.
I just tried turingtest2's suggestion and it didn't work.
I converted an H264 .mov file in Handbrake and output the conversion to the 'Automatically Add to iTunes' folder. But it was not added to iTunes - it ended up in the 'Not Added' folder and remained there until I played it from that location. Then it immediately turned up in iTunes 'Movies' folder.
The Handbrake conversion was to an 'Apple TV' compatible .m4v file.
Any idea what the problem might be?

  • Help Please: how can I burn a dvd movie without a theme?

I know this has been asked before. But none of the previous answers/suggestions seem to work. I've tried to use the "looping" method from the help menu, I still get a theme, now at the end of my video "package". And it doesn't "loop". I've tried to take a jpeg from photos and cover the theme using the option key, but that doesn't work either. I just want to have the option to be able to "turn off" the themes and create a clean video dvd for people who don't have time to choose on-screen buttons. Thanks in advance for any help you can provide

Hey maybe you can help me. I was trying to figure out how to burn an iPhoto slideshow on iDVD, but don't want to use the lame Apple themes. I went to the link you pointed out about one-step iDVD's, but the problem is you have to have a movie, and iPhoto won't let me export my slideshow while keeping the music in sync. Insane.
So two questions... do you know how to export a slideshow to .M4V or .MOV without losing the sync between all the pictures and the music? I've got 88 slides all set to specific timing and Ken Burns effect, but every time I do an export the music becomes disconnected from the pictures and goes out of sync.
I did do an export to iDVD and it seemed to stay in sync but I can't figure out how to get rid of the ridiculous theme that iDVD is automatically using. I don't want a theme at all.
When is someone at Apple going to figure out that most people just want a plain wrapper?
Anyway, do you know any answers to my problems? Thanks. I've lost 4 slideshows this week as iPhoto keeps losing all the slide settings.

  • Can`t movies files into iTunes

    Hi,
I am trying to move movies files into the iTunes library by dragging them and without success.
I have tried to add the files with the file menu with the same results.
    Using iTunes 10.5
Can anyone help me with this?
    thanks,
    Amnon

Itunes only accepts MP4, M4V and MOV formats.  You will have to get a third party Video converter to convert AVI to Apple format.

  • Converting m4v to ProRes, still constricts the resolution (dumb question)

    Hi everyone,
A bit of a video noob question here but I was hoping to ask you guys, it seems like I was given some video footage in an .m4v file format that showed only the upper left portion of the screen.  I was told that I need to convert to ProRes and that should allow me to see the entire thing.
Unfortunately, I thought Compressor would do the trick easily for me (again, a noob), but the only program I have that opens the video properly is an Adobe After Effects trial that is almost expired.  Does anyone have a quick sense of what is going wrong and can just hint at the right direction for me?
So bottom line, I can only see the upper-left of an .m4v and am told to convert to ProRes.  Doing that just outputs the video again in the same style.  Does anyone have a suggestion so I can see the entire video like when I see it in After Effects?  Thank you!

Changed it to .mov and it's the same thing.  Take a look at how it opens up normally (m4v or mov):
When I Render it out in After Effects, it gives me the right aspect ratio and shows the entire video correctly, and automatically.  Look at how much of the video is actually here in the same still:
I'd love to use Compressor for this sort of thing instead of After Effects, which I'm trying to get away from a little bit, but I just don't know how to make Compressor do what After Effects automatically does.
Thanks for any help you can provide!

  • DVD to .mov

Is it possible to extract a DVD to .mov without having to spend money? I use Handbrake, which is great; however, I would prefer to have my files as .mov instead of .mp4. Is there something out there like Handbrake that is free without catches? Are there other alternatives?
I know about software out there that does this, like quicktime pro and dvd ripper. I feel that there shouldn't be a reason to shell out more money for just converting files. We all know being a videographer isn't cheap.
Since I need to bring my mini-tapes to a media transfer store to be made into DVDs, I thought I might be able to bring it to that same place or a rite aid or duane reade to be converted to .mov files instead of a DVD.
I appreciate all the help anyone can give me.

Is it possible to extract a DVD to .mov without having to spend money?
Yes. However the question of which software applications can be used will depend on whether or not the source files are copy protected and the nature of your use of the content.
I use Handbrake, which is great; however, I would prefer to have my files as .mov instead of .mp4.
MP4, M4V, and MOV are all file container types. While there are technical differences betwen the containers/use of these containers, they all may be used to wrap the same basic types of MPEG-4 video and/or AAC audio content and all QT based players will play this basic content in essentially the same way. So, unless you have specific requirements (e.g., muxing a secondary AC3 audio track but not wanting iTunes to be the default opening/managing app) there is no real reason for choosing an MOV file container over the MP4 or M4V file containers. In most cases, it is best to select the file container based on target device use and/or file type management options.
    Are there other alternatives?
Any QT based application having access to the "Save As..." option can save the content of any other QT file container type to an MOV file container on a system configured to handle the source file compression formats. This includes the ability to place WMV, DivX, "muxed" MPEG, and other types of content into the generic QT MOV file container without having to totally recompress the source data. QT 7 Pro and the free MPEG Streamclip apps are probably the two which are most commonly used by QT users.
I know about software out there that does this, like quicktime pro and dvd ripper. I feel that there shouldn't be a reason to shell out more money for just converting files. We all know being a videographer isn't cheap.
I fail to see your connection between videography/videographers and the making of fair use personal backups of intellectual content for which you hold a lifetime lease or the creation of content in the best interest of the general public as provided for by US law or as may be allowed by the consent of the legal copyright holder.
Since I need to bring my mini-tapes to a media transfer store to be made into DVDs, I thought I might be able to bring it to that same place or a rite aid or duane reade to be converted to .mov files instead of a DVD.
This statement seems to imply the content is of your own making and for which you hold the legal right to use as you please. Unless you are paying extra to have the DVD content copyprotected, such DVD content as is currently being converted by your HandBrake to MP4 file content can be readily re-wrapped to either MOV or M4V file containers. For MOV file containers, the free MPEG Streamclip would probably be best option under the conditions you've stated and does not require the use of paid "outside" services unless you want to avoid the time and effort of converting and re-wrapping the content yourself.

  • How can I get a quicktime movie in imovie?

I have a video saved as quicktime, .m4v, .3gp, .m4v and .mov.  None of these will import into iMovie!  How can I get this video in iMove???

MOV is a container, not a codec. so if it uses a codec that iMovie can read, then it should work.
.m4v should work. Codecs that work include h.264, DV, HDV, Apple Intermediate Codec, Apple Animation Codec, Motion JPEG/A and a few others.
Some.commercial .m4v's may have copy protection that would prevent iMovie from opening it.
Also, if any of these movies have extra tracks beyond the audio and video tracks, they will not work. This would include Chapter Tracks, Tween Tracks, Closed Captioning Tracks, and the like. These extra tracks could possibly be removed in QuickTime Pro.
.3gp would never work without converting it to something else.
