M70 freezes when connecting AC Adapter after low battery warning

When I get the low battery warning, I connect the AC adapter but when I switch the power on, the laptop screen goes blank. The DC in LED lights up, the Power LED stays on and the Battery LED comes on but I cannot use any keys on the keyboard, the laptop has frozen. Any ideas?

Does this happen when you connect the small plug directly to your laptop or the mains plug?
I noticed similar problems (usually shutdown) when connecting/disconnecting the mains plug. This does not occur when the power adaptor is plugged in and I plug the power connector at the laptop in/out. I guess there is a problem with the transient behaviour of the power adaptor & the power detection in the laptop.
This applies to Satellite M60. I recall no similar issues with an older Sat 3000.

  • Macbook no longer "sleeps" after 'low battery' warning, just suddenly dies

My macbook (just over a year old) used to give me a warning with 10 minutes left that it would sleep so as my data was not lost, if I didn't plug it in. However, recently, it has stopped doing this - instead of sleeping, if I don't get to a power source in time within 10 minutes, it simply cuts out, with the sound of the hard drive stopping - like if you shut down a frozen macbook with the power button.
This is REALLY irritating - what's going on? Why does it not sleep anymore, and is there any way to fix it?
I'm on Tiger 10.4.11, with an intel macbook...

Same Problem here. Tried several calibrations, smc and pram zap (well i guess there is no pram any longer so it zaps something else). Now I found another post where they talk about the battry 1.2 update. http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1449128&tstart=60
I remember when trying to do an battery update to 1.3 manually the update told me that it is not for my macbook. But - I found the 1.3 update Bundle in /System/Library/Configuration/BatteryUpdater.bundle
    1. I Removed /System/Library/Configuration/BatteryUpdater.bundle from my system
    2. rebooted
    3. Emptied trash
    4. Installed update 1.2 by Softwarupdate.
I will now do an SMC reset an then let the battery run low and watch what happens.
    Then do a calibration.
I have the problem here in different ways. Sometimes Macbook shuts down suddenly after low battery warning, sometimes it sleep, almost never it hibernates.

  • MacBook shuts down after low battery warning

    Hi,
up until recently my macbook's battery has been working just fine. but then lately i noticed that a few minutes after it displays the low battery warning it shuts down by itself.
before, when the low battery warning would display i could still continue working on my macbook for several minutes until it goes to sleep -- only then would i connect it to the power cord.
unlike the other posts (concerning batteries) that i've read, i have no problems turning my macbook on/off before or after this event has occured. neither does it shut itself down when the battery is halfway. my problem really only happens after the low battery warning has been displayed.
i wanted to calibrate my battery but then that would require my macbook to go to sleep once it reaches a battery level of less than 5%-10% -- mine just shuts down completely.
is this shutting down thing a substitution mechanism to save the laptop's memory -- instead of going to sleep, it'd just shut down?? how can i fix this?
thanks in advance for the help.
MacBook   Mac OS X (10.4.8)   512MB, 2GHz Intel Core Duo

For what it is worth, I now have the same issue. Only I don't even see the low battery warning, it gets to 15% or 10% and bang, no power. This is not good, by the way and is bound to corrupt something in the system as OSX requires some house keeping when you shut down the computer properly. This instant off is not a proper shut down. I took my MacBook in and they wouldnt simply replace the battery, they want to keep the computer and give it back to me in a few days. I rely on this puter for work 5 days a week, so I was trying to avoid this.
Oh well I guess a trip to the Apple store is unavoidable.

  • Shut down after low battery warning

    Hi
After I get the low battery warning on my iBook G4 (about 30 seconds) my iBook unexpectedly shuts down, I have tried recalibrating the battery several times, including shutting the lid to put it to sleep after the warning then plugging it in and waking it (to recalibrate you are supposed to wait until the machine sleeps) and letting it charge right up.
I have also tried resetting the PMU, although I dont think this is working as I hit shift-ctrl-apple/option-and the power button, and all that happens is the machine starts up as usual, according to the documentation, I should have to then power up the machine.
Is itr just that my battery hasd had it? I have notice it only takes an hour/hour and a half to run the battery down, and only about 30mins or so to charge.
Thanks for any help in advance.
    Mike

That definitely sounds like a battery that wants to be replaced.
My iBook behaved in a similar manner--except the "low battery" warning wouldn't even show up!
I think it's time for you to pick up a new battery--they run about $100.

  • Laptop freezes when connecting Power Adapter

Hi guys, I have an i7 Y560 Lenovo Everytime I connect my power adapter to the laptop the laptop just freezes. Alternatively if I boot up with the power cord attached the windows boots, but the login page never appears, I just get a black screen. I have to say that the laptop works perfectly fine on battery. My CPU and GPU temperatures are reported to be around 60C and 55C respectively. I have tried a different power adapter, no luck, so that power adapter is working. Another thing to note, when switched off, the battery is charging normally. I have opened my laptop and also cleaned it, and I'm in the process of replacing my DC jack just in case its shorting. Any other suggestions of what could be causing this ?  Specs:Lenovo Y560i7 720QM Processor4x2GB RAM - 8GB512GB SSD DriveWindows 7 ProfessionalLaptop Age: 2yrs 5 months

After some searching i found out what was preventing me from booting successfully
This thread here has the solution
    http://forums.lenovo.com/t5/IdeaPad-Y-U-V-Z-and-P-series/ideapad-y560-radeon-5730-black-screen-need-...
, apparently there are some problems with the power options/energy management, what ever. The computer would open and work fine (with the driver you gave me) if I open it running solely on the battery and not connected by the power cord. Everything seems normal
Graphically utilized softwares would run normally, the screen runs at native resolution etc.
However as soon as I plug in the power cord it would freeze (or perhaps refresh at less than 1Hz and then gradually completely freezes if that makes sense)
After looking at the instructions in that thread:-
i had to adjust the energy settings in windows. the mininmal performance is set to 100 percent for running with cable. if you set it to 5% like running on battery, it isnt crashing. perhaps this could be a solution to other having the black screen after windows logo.
    here's what to do:
boot in safe mode and adjust your energy settings for running with ac adapter. set the minimal performance to 5%"
so I got kinda confused here i assume he is talking about the processor power management settings
So running normally i set the minimum processor state to 5% for 'Plugged in' (All inside the high performance preset which i assume will be loaded at startup)I restarted with the powercord on, still got a black screen.
    So off to safemode,
"adjust your energy settings for running with ac adapter. set the minimal performance to 5%"
from what I can interpret, it seems like there's a specific option inside the minimum processor state ( on battery and plugged in)
however there is only one option (percentage) I think it's global for both.
    It is set to 5%.
I am just one step away....

  • Freeze when connecting to wifi after waking from sleep

This problem was isolated to my Powerbook when I wanted to connect to a public hotspot (it started with the latest updates). Now, however, after updating my iMac G5 with all the latest updates, it's happening to it at home on my own wireless network.
When I wake my computer, it freezes when trying to reconnect to the wireless network. The only way to get access is to hold the power button down long enough for it to shut down and then upon restart I have a workable computer that can connect to the internet fine.
I've repaired permissions and repaired my disk from the install CD. I've waited up to fifteen minutes to see if the freeze would terminate with some process timing out, but no luck.
The beachball appears when I rollover the airport status in the menu bar (and the volume and clock) but doesn't appear when I rollover other items in the menu bar (quicksilver and norton). However, if I click on anything everything freezes and the beachball "just won't quit."
Anyone have a clue what's going on? All help is very much appreciated.
    thanks,
    bryan

Hi bryan. Welcome to the Discussions.
    1. You wrote: "When I wake my computer, it freezes when trying to reconnect to the wireless network. "
1.1. How do you know that the problem is specifically related to trying to reconnect to your home WiFi network, as opposed to some other potential cause of a wake-from-sleep freeze?
1.2. Are you using an AirPort base station or third-party base station? If third-party, what specific make and model?2. You wrote: "I've repaired permissions and repaired my disk from the install CD."DId Repair Disk find any errors, even those it may have corrected? If so, did you write them down?

However, if I click on anything everything freezes and the beachball "just won't quit.""Could be one of the other menu extras you have installed, i.e. the icons on the right side of the menu bar other than the Spotlight icon. Often menu extras are launched as Startup or Login items. My "Troubleshooting Startup and Login Items" FAQ can help you pin that down if such an item is causing the problem. Note that your AirPort connection won't work in Safe Mode, but it gives you a way of testing if the wake-from-sleep or menu extra freeze is related to a menu extra, especially a third-party menu extra launched as a Startup or Login item.
    4. See if your computer's serial number is in the range specified in the "iMac G5 Repair Extension Program for Video and Power Issues" document.
    5. As far as general iMac G5 troubleshooting goes:5.1. Rule out potential hardware problems. Run the Apple Hardware Test that came with the computer. Instructions for doing so will be found in the hardcopy manual that accompanied your computer. For additional details, see my "Apple Hardware Test" FAQ.
5.2. Check the diagnostic LEDs, a feature of your iMac G5. See "About the iMac G5 diagnostic LEDs."
5.3. If your iMac G5 will not turn on, see "iMac G5: Troubleshooting when your computer won't turn on."
5.4. See also the iMac Service & Support site.
5.5. Check the iMac G5 Discussions for similar reports from other users.
5.6. As a general check, run the procedure specified in my "Resolving Disk, Permission, and Cache Corruption" FAQ. Perform the steps therein in the order specified. While you've done some of these steps already, it won't hurt to double-check this.
5.7. If the computer is either under warranty or covered by an AppleCare Protection Plan, don't hesitate to take advantage of your warranty and contact AppleCare.Good luck!

  • Shut down when connecting AC Adaptor on low battery

My macbook 1.83 ghz dies when I connect the AC Adaptor because my battery has run down in to the red. I then have to reset the PMU ( I don't bother removing the adaptor or battery for this - just hold the power button for ten seconds) to get it to start up again. If I connect the adaptor before the battery gets low its ok and begins charging and runs as normal. Any ideas?

Just hope your Macbook not really died, just went into sleep state to preserve information before completely run of battery juice.
It is ok to plug your mag safe anytime, for new battery technology will prevent the memory effect that usually happen on older (before Li) battery, that require us to use it until depleted before charge it.
It is also recommend to use your battery until it is almost depleted (red) and charge it to refresh the cell and prolong battery life.
    Good Luck

  • 2009 MacBook Pro shuts off after low battery warning.

Today I got the warning at 10% and about a minute later, the computer just zapped off. I only had internet (Facebook and email) and iTunes open. This has happened before, more often recently, where it shuts off shortly after the warning. I've been wondering if I have a bad battery because sometimes the computer has drained all the way to 0% and then zaps off.
Is this fixable with the current battery? Or is it just old and likely needs replacement?
    Any input is appreciated. Thanks!!

Apple actually has a section of their website dedicated to explaining how recharge-able batteries work these days.  It includes some tips on how to maximize your battery life.

  • MBP freezes when connected to VGA projector

My MacBook Pro (15" 2.4Ghz SR, 4Gb) freezes when connected to a VGA projector, doesn't matter whether the DVI-VGA adapter is connected to cable first or last. Boot time while connected to the projector is also inordinately long. I have seen this happen a number of times specifically with other Santa Rosa MBPs.
I haven't called Apple yet on this and I suspect it will require a firmware update to fix; is this a known issue (and is it known to apple?)
    thanks
    --p

Just to update this thread with what I've posted elsewhere:
On my machine this problem only happens if the computer has been put to sleep before being connected to a projector. That is, put to sleep after being booted but before connection to the computer. It can be connected after booting without sleep. Once it has been successfully connected to a projector, it can be disconnected, put to sleep, awakened and reconnected with no problem.
I think that this "first sleep after boot" issue is what makes the occurrence of this problem so variable.
Some people just leave their computer on for long periods, only putting it to sleep when not using it. If they connected to a projector before putting it to sleep the first time they wouldn't see this problem.

  • IPod Classic 80 GB Freezes when connecting to Computer

    Hi.
My iPod Classic 80 GB Freezes when connecting to my computer (Vista... yes... I know). I've got my iPod for over a year now and I've never had real trouble with it.
When I plug it in (iTunes already running) my computer gives me the 'thumbthumb' noise because an USB thingamajib is connected to the computer. At this moment my iPod freezes and stays on. iTunes doesn't seem to find my pod. When I disconnect my iPod, it'll stay on (doesn't go energy safe mode) and stays frozen until the battery is empty. But by then, I've already lost my playing info (Which I really value).
    Pllllllease help me out her.

Someone has finally found a solution to this problem and i decided that i would spread the word around ... so here are the steps:
    1) Quit iTunes.
    2) Delete iTunes from your Applications folder.
    3) Go to your ~/Music/iTunes folder. Delete or rename the "iTunes Library" file.
    4) Open the "Previous iTunes Libraries" folder and look for the backup of your old pre-9 library; it should be dated at about the time you first ran iTunes 9. Copy it back out to the ~/Music/iTunes folder, and rename it to "iTunes Library".
    6) Go to <http://support.apple.com/downloads/iTunes8_21> and download iTunes 8.2.1. The page says it's for G3, but the Read Me file says it'll run on G4, G5, and Intel too. Open the diskimage and run the installer.
You should now be able to run iTunes 8.2.1 again.
And your iTunes will restore to before you upgraded and you won't lose anything.
*If you download the iTunes file from the "support.apple" link, and you can't open it, go to http://www.mydigitallife.info/2009/06/28/apple-itunes-8-2-and-quicktime-7-6-2-di rect-download-links/ and download "iTunes 8.2 for Windows: iTunesSetup.exe

This came from another thread, but worked for me.  Problem is with newest iTunes 4.62.  Unistall iTunes, as well as its helper programs (Apple Application Support, Apple Mobile Divice Support, and Apple Software Update).  Reboot, and reinstall iTunes.  It will reinstall all the other ones and you should be able to connect your nano.  Good luck.

  • Why does "low battery" warning always come up when I start the iMac?

I've been getting a "low battery" warning lately when I turn on my computer. I've tried 3 sets of new AA batteries (bought from 3 different stores), but that doesn't seem to help. Of course it could be caused by the unlikely event that all three "new" battery packs were not fresh, but that's unlikely.

and you're talking about the mouse ... the keyboard ... ?
also, does the message vanish after a while? what does the battery indicator say?
