M70: Permissions, wallpaper and limited user

Hi,
I have spent some time (i.e. a few days of mucking around) setting up a new M70 (PSM70A-T00E) notebook which has WinXPSP2 preinstalled (on an all-but-useless recovery DVD without the alleged "expert" option, but that's another story).
When Windows was first installed, I configured the (default) administrator and one user account (called "aburdeni"). By default, both accounts had administrator permissions.
After setting things up the way I like them, I am now trying to convert the user account to a limited account.
The usual method of "control panel->user accounts->...->change account type" doesn't work as it claims that there is only one account on the system (even though there's the one with the username "administrator", which it ignores for some reason).
To override this, I logged in as administrator and ran lusrmgr.msc. I then added user "aburdeni" to the User group and removed them from the Administrator group.
Things broke.
What I have noticed now is that:
* The default Toshiba theme doesn't stick (no wallpaper, just a plain grey backdrop)
* Control panel reverted back to the default hierarchical style, and clicking on the give-it-to-me-the-way-I-like-it text on the left-hand side didn't do anything.
* Other settings (taskbar, start menu style) reverted back to the default.
There are probably countless other things that broke, but I have yet to find them.
Setting the account to Power User instead of User made no difference. Things only started working again when I added the account back into the Administrator group.
Is there any way to have things work while logged in as an unprivileged user?
Thanks,
Adam
BTW: I'm from Australia, if that makes a difference (different settings for the default install?)

Hello Adam
As far as I know there is no difference in which country you live because operating systems are the same for all countries and some different settings depending on country are not known to me.
Please delete all created accounts. Log in as administrator and then create a new account. First step is to give the name for this new account and click on Next. Second step is to define this user (administrator rights or even limited user). Choose limited option and end the wizard.
Use Windows + L key combination and try to log in as limited user. There should not be any problem. The background picture and everything else will be set like for the first time.
You can make a small test and try to start Toshiba power utility. You will see that there is no chance to start it and change anything. It can be used just by administrator.
Please try again. It must works.
Good luck!!!

  • ThinkVantage Access Connections and Limited User Account (LUA) on XP SP3

    Is it really so that one has to be logged on with at least Power User privileges to get the Access Connections utility working properly with 3G/HSDPA? When logging on as a Limited User, the computer can find all the cell phone operators nearby but does not let to do a connect. But when logged on as a Power User, all problems go away.
    I would not like to bump up my user privileges from Limited User to Power User, since all else seems to work fine with a Limited User Account. Any ideas about what is going wrong -- or did I just hit into a wall here?
    The environment in question is Thinkpad X200 and XP SP3. Access Connections and the HSDPA driver are the latest ones I could find from the Lenovo driver download site (Access Connections v. 5.21, Ericsson HSDPA driver v. 1.0.1046.221).
    Would there be any other way to use 3G connections than to use the Access Connections utility (without changing to another o/s)?

    Hi Sami,
    I just got stuck on the same problem as you and following is what I found in details fro ThinkVantage Access Connections version 5.30. Hope this helps.

    <Limited User>
      A Limited user can create and apply only modem profiles. However, if
      Administrator sets "Allow Windows users without administrator
      privileges to create and apply location profiles" option in the
      Global settings then the user can create and apply any kinds of
      profiles in the system.
      Also, a limited user cannot:
      1. Edit setting for the Automatic Ethernet and Wireless location
         profiles switching.
      2. Edit Global settings.
      3. Edit profiles created by another user in the system.
      4. Renew or release IP in the Diagnostics panel.
      5. Export profiles.
      The limitations on Power user also apply on Limited user.

  • In my library/sharing and permissions there are two users i do not recognize. One is called fetching and one is called wheel.

    If I get info on my library I see under sharing and permissions a user called fetching and a user called wheel. I am not familiar with these users. Are they there for a reason?

    I see this question was asked last Oct, and had gone unanswered.
    I, too, have suddently noticed that all my folders on my external disk are giving permission to this "Fetching", and my system disk show permission for "Wheel".
    It is gratifying to know more than one person is seeing this, but does it mean we are both being hacked by the same source, or is there some unexplained legitimate reason they are there?
    Thank you for any further information.

    Hi Nikolay,
    Thanks for posting your issue, you need to set permissions on User Profiles = Read. Kindly find the below mentioned URLs to get the code and more details on this.

  • What share and NTFS permissions must I give users to deploy software through SCCM?

    What share and NTFS permissions must I give users to deploy software through SCCM? I have one folder with all of the applications and would like to know.
    Thanks
    James A+, Network+, MCP

    That still doesn't help. We're not prying, we're trying to help but we honestly have no idea what you are talking about. The more and better details that you can provide, the better we can help.
    "Because I want to know" adds no value and does not help us help you. We need technical details -- we can't see what you are seeing and we can't read your mind.
    And, you didn't really answer any of my questions.
    I'll take another wild-guess though: If you are talking about the source file locations referenced within packages and applications, users do not access those. The computer account for the systems hosting the SMS Provider needs read access to the location(s)
    specified. Yes, this means both NTFS and share permissions assuming they are being referenced via a UNC.
    Finally, there is no service account. If you've changed the account that the SMS_EXECUTIVE is running under, you're are now in a completely unsupported state that will have many issues. If instead you are talking about the Network Access Account, that is
    *not* a service account and is *not* used to access content source files.
    Once again though, we're simply guessing because no one has any idea what you're doing. Please provide actual, technical details.

  • Strange Sharing and Permissions and Admin Users question.

    I am having problems printing and need to change the permissions and ownership on a library file
    My directions were to:
    [ The fiery cups filter needs ownership changed from admin to system (root) ]
    My secondary question is I am making the assumption that when someone refers to my "system (root)" that this is the same as "my name (me)" Yes?
    But my primary mystery question is
    As I went to change the permissions on the above top topic I noticed I had four choices.
    I am the only single user of this computer. My permissions are set to Administrator status.
    I apparently had a guest account enabled but I don't remember turning this on.
    On the get info window, at the bottom, under sharing and permissions, NAME and PRIVILEGE when I add - select a new user or group, I have:
    My account "my name (me)"
    "administrators"
    and *"firebird database"?*
    "everyone" is already there as a standard default.
    *I don't know what the **** "firebird database" is. It shows as a single user account.* My guest settings were enabled to connect to my shared folders, which I have turned off. Is this "firebird" part of Apple code or has something been compromised without me knowing?
    Anyone know? Thanks in advance.

    Root or System ownership is not the same as you. You are a restricted user. Root is an unrestricted user.
    If you have installed third-party printing software with incorrect permissions, then start by using Disk Utility to repair permissions. Do not begin changing file/folder permissions when you obviously do not know what you are doing as this could screw up your entire system.
    Firebird is a third-party database program that you must have installed. Obviously there is a problem with it. Either uninstall it or contact the developer for assistance.

  • Forms Authentication Error: User '' does not have required permissions. Verify that sufficient permissions have been granted and Windows User Account Control (UAC) restrictions have been addressed

    I created a custom security extension following the steps listed in the Readme_Security Extension Sample. It works fine if I login as the user that is specified AdminConfiguration section of the rsreportserver.config file but if I
    log in as another user, I get this error: User '' does not have required permissions. Verify that sufficient permissions have been granted and Windows User Account Control (UAC) restrictions have been addressed.  I've added the user to both System Administrator
    and System User roles to try to get it to work but still no luck.
    Does anyone know how to fix this?
    Thanks.

    Hi MetronM,
    The issue is due to that user have no permission to access the report server. In report manager, Reporting Services includes predefined roles that we can assign to users and groups to provide immediate access to a report server. Each role defines a collection
    of related tasks.
    You can refer to the following steps to assign corresponding role to the user.
    Open report manager.
    Click “Folder Setting” button.
    Click “New Role Assignment” icon.
    Type the user name and select the corresponding role.
    There is an article about Granting Permissions on a Native Mode Report Server, you can refer to it.

  • Officejet pro 8500 a909g, limited user accounts can't use printing preferences

    The above discription explains most of it. I had install this 8500 printer, then shortly after, uninstalled the other two older  printers I was previously using. That is when the problem started. I can not access printing preferences from a document or from control panel\printer and faxes. But I am able to access from the administrater account. I did an online chat with HP help and what we did made sence, but did not work. We went into the security tab in properties and added the limited user account for all permissions and reboted the computer. Did not work!!!!    I have a dell laptop, windows xp pro, and the printer software is now uninstalled.    the window that pops up when I click on properties is: Function address 0x50085a97 caused a protection fault. (exception code 0x0000005) Some or all property pages may no be displayed. I don not have this problem as an administrater only as a limited user.

    I had this similar problem.  Installed this printer a few months back and for some time it was printing fine.  Recently, I changed the default preferences to black/white, draft, low ink etc etc.  Now if I click on the Properties I get this same window:
      *** (x50085a97 caused protection fault (exception code 9xc0000005 some or all property pages could not be displayed) ***.
    Running XP on an Dell Intel Pentium and it happens irrespective of the application I am using - usually firefox or staroffice.  9 times out of 10 I can't change the properties, but occasionally it allows me too then reverts back.  So now I am stuck with everything printing black/white as that's the default I set!  Any suggestions welcome.

  • Toshiba Power Saver doesn't work with limited user account

    Hello,
    this same question was posted in 2006 - not by me - with no successful answer. I try again.
    If you create a user with restrictions account (member of the local USERS group) in XP, then he cannot manage either the embedded Windows power options, and the Toshiba Power Saving tool.
    I managed, working on file and registry permissions, to have the Windows power options working. But I still can't launch the Toshiba Power Saving tool, it always pop-ups the "you don't have rights" box.
    Is there really nothing I can do to work around this?
    thanks

    I have the exact same problem on my Tecra 9100 (PT910E) just accquired on Ebay with minimum XP Pro SP2 installation.
    Akuma I tried to your advice with my Power saver version 5.04.00 (file 20071126153401) without success.
    The only way I could find to run Power saver is directly from the icon in the Admin account, or through the console. I could not then find "setup options" only "Details" of the various power schemes. No "Allow Limited User to change settings" box/button anywhere.
    Can you clarify further ?
    thanks

  • Read/Write App Files Under Limited User Account

    Hi All,
    My desktop app is intended for Windows only. I'm writing files to the hard disk to store app specific configuration.
    The applications main data source is a ZIp file that consists several XML files. The user can store this ZIP anywehre they like and the application will extract the necessary files to a temp dir so that it can read in data.
    When logged into a PC as either an Administrator or Power User, I am able to read write my config files and extract XML files from the ZIP with no problem.
    When logged in as a user with "limited" access, I can only read and write the config files. But when I go to extract any XML files from the ZIP, it seem to get denied due to insufficient permissions.
    The working directory for storeing all these files is: C:\Documents and Settings\<USER NAME>\Application Data\<MY APP>\
    Don't users with limited access have full read/write permissions to their own home directory?
    If not, what can be done to give them full read write access? Is there perhaps some other location I should be using?
    Also, would code signing from some place like Verisign do any good?
    I'm targeting Windows 2000/XP.
    Thanks in advance.
    Regards,
    Jim

    You can also access the user folder through the registry:
         public static final String APP_DATA_FOLDER_CMD = REG_QUERY_UTIL
              + "\"HKCU\\Software\\Microsoft\\Windows\\CurrentVersion\\"
              + "Explorer\\Shell Folders\" /v AppData";
          * Gets the current user Application Data folder path defined in the
          * registry.
          * @return The current user Application Data folder path.
         public static String getCurrentUserAppDataFolderPath()
              return queryREG_SZ(APP_DATA_FOLDER_CMD);
          * Performs the query in the registry for the specified value type.
          * @param queryString The query to be performed.
          * @param valueType The value type.
          * @return The value data for the specified value name in the registry.
         public static String queryREG_SZ(String queryString, String valueType)
              try
                   Process process = Runtime.getRuntime().exec(queryString);
                   StreamReader reader = new StreamReader(process.getInputStream());
                   reader.start();
                   process.waitFor();
                   reader.join();
                   String result = reader.getResult();
                   int p = result.indexOf("REG_SZ");
                   if (p == -1)
                        return null;
                   return result.substring(p + valueType.length()).trim();
              catch (Exception e)
                   return null;
         }This will get you the user directory from the registry. However, my issue is
    that the value returned was:
    C:\Documents and Settings\<USER NAME>\Application Data
    Which is great, but that folder didn't exists on my computer. I cannot find
    any documentation to say why it would be there. Except I had no Application
    Data folders under any user. I have XP.
    So when running the program on one computer, I had no valid folder to write
    to and it wouldn't let me create it. Said the <USER NAME> folder could not
    be written to. canWrite() returned false and the directory could not be
    created.
    On another computer, I had the Application Data folder, the canWrite()
    returned false, yet I was able to create a folder and file inside.
    I checked the default <ALL USERS> directory and the Application Data folder
    did not exist there.
    I don't understand how I am supposed to work around it...
    If the folder doesn't exist, I need to be able to create it, whether it's in the
    <ALL USER> or <USER NAME> folder.
    I guess I am counting on the canWrite() to be accurate. Yet it appears that
    I cannot rely on the canWrite() since a false was returned. I wrote!!
    So confused ... need to be able to write to this folder on any computer...
    Help!!

    Hi. When you were in the recovery drive doing permissions, did you try and run a repair of the boot drive? Did you try single user mode? Try these first and then go back and try to reinstall the operating system.When I say repair boot drive I don't mean permissions. There are both options in disk utilities.When you open disk utilities ,you will see in the left column  two drives plus possibly  a boot partition that look like an external driv. click on the second drive and in first aid use repair disk. If you still can't boot and it will not let you restore, you may have to do a clean install.   http://support.apple.com/kb/PH18869?viewlocale=en_US

  • Scanner usage under limited users

    Greets everyone,
    I help manage a network of computers that comprises of both Apples (running 10.4.10) and PCs. We are attempting to setup a apple workstation image that will allow end users to easily connect a scanner to a system as a limited user who is logged into the network.
    The scanner is a Canon Lide 500F and I have installed the ScanGear Starter and the CanoScan toolbox which are available from the Canon website (http://www.usa.canon.com/consumer/controller?act=ModelInfoAct&tabact=SupportDeta ilTabAct&fcategoryid=235&modelid=11011)
    The instructions state that I must be logged in as root to install the scanner and scanner software so that other users who log into the system can use the 4 speed buttons to easily scan documents into the workstation which I have done.
    Root has no problem using the quick 4 scan buttons but any other user who logs in, limited users and even privileged users (other than root) are unable to use the 4 buttons located on the scanner.
    I have noticed when I login as root while the scanner is connected the scanner will power up and generate some activity by itself BUT when logging in as a limited or other user nothing will happen.
    Are there any access permissions or settings I have to define to allow all users on the system to be able to use the scanner freely just as root does.
    Any help would be much appreciated
    Regards
    Peter

    I seem to recall that the Canon scanner buttons were controlled by software run as a "Login Item" set up on a per-user basis. If the software was installed as "root", it is possible that the login item was only configured for the "root" account.
    Try logging in to the "root" account and looking in "System Preferences" > "Accounts" > "Login Items" to see if there is anything likely to be the Canon items (they may be named CNP something or other). If there is such an item, if the mouse pointer is hovered over it, a tool tip should appear containing the path to the item.
    I'm not sure how to proceed from that point with respect to network users. For local accounts, it would be possible to either add the item manually to each user's login items, or to make it apply to all users by configuring one user and copying that user's "~/Library/Preferences/loginwindow.plist" file to the "/Library/Preferences" folder and adjusting the permissions to give everyone "read only" access. There is probably a method for configuring "Login Items" for network users which would apply in this situation, but I suppose users could manually launch the app themselves if it came down to it.
    In addition, depending on the nature of the app, it may be necessary to configure "Some Limits" accounts to allow them to use that item.

  • XCOPY folder with ACL - limited user

    Hi there,
    I created another post
    Here, but i think that's the wrong place for it. Apologies for double posting.
    I am trying to get one of my "limited user" to run a batch file which creates a folder from a template folder. Template folder has specific ACLs. but the user attempting to run it recieves "Access
    is denied"
    batch content:
    xcopy "\\server\templatefolder" "\\server\newfolder\" /O /X /E/ H /K
    The user running this batch is a limited user (Domain user but not part of the Local admin group)
    Windows 7 x64bit
    UAC is turned on
    Software
    Restriction Policy is in place but this particular batch file is allowed to run
    Apparently "/O" what triggers "Access is Denied". Any idea what permissions the user needs in order to run with "/O"? Adding the user to administrators, domain admin group is out of the question.
    I tried changing the ownership of the template folder to that user, no go.
    Thank you,

    Hi,
    First I would like to know if the issue is denied in copy files from the source folder, or copy files to the target folder.
    To confirm you can give the user full control on target folder and try again.
    And if "Apparently /O what triggers Access is Denied" means
    you have already confirmed that it is the source folder, what's the current user permission?
    I think it is easy for testing - create a test user with same permission as the "limited user", give it 1 permission at a time to find our the exact missing one.
     /O means "Copies file ownership and ACL information" so I think "Read permission" is needed. "Read attributes" may also be needed. I'll go and do a test as well.

  • Remote Desktop Service Manager - configure permissions for Remote Desktop Users to Send Message, Disconnect, Logoff

    Hello, dear colleagues.
