M73 Mini tower Graphics upgrade

Hi all,
How viable is it to upgrade the graphics card of the M73 Mini Tower version? I may want to do this at some point in the future. I will probably install a Radeon HD 7750. The M73 comes with a 280W PSU. It seems that computer hardware enthusiasts on internet forums recommend a PSU of well over 300W to use a dedicated graphics card.
Is it viable? For that matter, how does the M73 handle Lenovo's available GPU options anyway (eg Nvidia GT 620 and Radeon HD 8570)? Does it have trouble supplying enough power?
If the PSU is in fact underpowered, can it be upgraded later if required? eg can you put in another brand of PSU with higher wattage?
Thanks.

I got an HD8570 in the new M93p purcahsed recently.  I believe it uses 50W or less.
Fortunately the HD8570 does not require additional PCIe power, which would be impossible anyway since the M93p also has that little 280W PSU which does not include any 75W PCIe power cables to go to high-end graphics cards.
Unfortunately, the HD8570 from Lenovo is a 1/2-size version, and only has a VGA and HDMI connector on it. No DVI, and no DP.  So connecting it to your monitor requires considering cable or adapter requirements coming rom the only digital connection on the 1/2-size card which is HDMI.  This is a real shame, as the mini-tower cases (for my M93p) holds full-size cards.  So they could have used a full-size HD8570 with all four connectors on it as the AMD site shows this card available with.
Also, the Lenovo OEM HD8570 only has DDR3 memory, rather than DDR5.  Another disappointment.
I think the IdeaCenter K450 machine has the HD8670 as an option, and I think that has DDR5 memory... and also sucks up 75W (but probably again does not require external PCIe power which again would not be available with the same dinky PSU in the K450).

You can test the not working theory by calling up a vendor that sells the 900 series cards and tell them you have a vostro 460 and that when you install the driver and reboot its a black screen.
Then tell them you want an RMA for a non working card and see how they dance around not giving you your money back.

  • Any way to install Tiger or Panther?Beige G3 Mini Tower with G4 ZIF upgrade

Networked to my DP MDD 1.25GHz G4 (2004) running Tiger 10.4.11, I have my 11-year-old Beige G3 Mini Tower with a G4 ZIF upgrade running Mac OS 9.2.2.
Sonnet, the upgrade manufacturer, says (or said, at some point) that the ZIF G4 CPU can run Panther or Tiger, but the problem is that the Mini Tower has no DVD drive to run the install disks; it has a CD drive only.
    Any workarounds?
Obviously this is more out of curiosity than need, as I can run all my OS X software on the MDD G4 under Tiger.
    Thanks in advance.

I don't know what issues you might have with the G3 SCSI drive and OS X, I was under the impression that the G3's floppy drive, serial ports (printer/modem), and SCSI chain would not work since there were no drivers for those G3 hardware items built into OS X.
I found that my external serial port modem continued to work for dial-up and fax, but I don't recall any reports of the floppy drive or SCSI working in OS X. My external SCSI drive never worked, but I'm not sure if the internal SCSI might work. I guess you could try it. My experience with SCSI in the G3 was limited and several years ago, other folks here may have better personal knowledge to share on that.

  • Mac Mini and RAM upgrade

i have been interested in the Mini for basic computer use since i can hook up to my samsung 32" tv but am also interested in the occasional gameplay. it looks like it has received some pretty good reviews for its size but i am a little confused about something. if i am reading the below links correctly, if i were to increase ram from 1GB to 2GB on the lower model i would get hte 256MB graphics output?
    http://www.macworld.com/article/139273/2009/03/macmini_games.html
^Plus, if you put in 2GB RAM, the mini's graphics will allocate up to 256MB of system RAM for its own use, handy for frame buffering in those complex games.
    and
    http://www.macworld.com/article/139267/2009/03/macmini2009.html
^When we tested those same games with the standard 1GB of RAM installed in the entry-level Mac mini, it suffered about a 15 percent performance hit compared to the same system running with 2GB of system memory, which allows access to the full 256MB allocation of memory for graphics.
i know still not the best machine for gaming, but it is what i really like right now and like i said its occasional.

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
Yes if you put in 2GB or greater it will jump to 256MB of RAM. Do yourself a favor and upgrade it to 4GB so you only have to open the thing up once. Also, if you want a larger HDD do it at the same time.
If you need placed to look for RAM:
    [Newegg|http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820148191] for $52.99, [Crucial|http://www.crucial.com/store/mpartspecs.aspx?mtbpoid=AE7BB1EEA5CA7304] for $65.99, or [Macsales|http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Other%20World%20Computing/8566DDR3S4GP > for $64.99.
    If you need a hard drive, I've put a link to [320GB, 500GB, 5400 RPM, and 7200 RPM HDDs|http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=Property&Subcategory =380&Description=&Type=&N=2010150380+1035915133&srchInDesc=&MinPrice=&MaxPrice=& PropertyCodeValue=359%3A15133&PropertyCodeValue=3097%3A33643&PropertyCodeValue=3 097%3A40009&PropertyCodeValue=355%3A7777&PropertyCodeValue=355%3A7776]. I don't see anywhere on Dell's website to purchase this.

So far there is no replacement/upgrade PSU for Dell Optiplex 9020 MT from Dell.
Will a dedicated power supply work for playing games? i bought this system as used (excellent condition) just for Gaming Purpose (GTA V), now i am stuck with the PSU issue. I can alter the case to fit the big size GPUs, but the issue is of PSU.

  • I was told G4 Tower was slower than G3 mini tower?

    Hi all,
I was told that the G4 tower was slower than the G3 mini tower. Isn't 400mhz vs the 266mhz suppose to be faster? Or is this not a true factor? Let me know. Thanks for your help
    Web dude.

    Hi-
    Let's see
    Processor: 266mhz vs. 400mhz
    Data Path: 64bit 66mhz vs. 128 bit 100 mhz
    Cache: L1 32K L2 512K vs. L1 64k L2 1mb
Memory: 384mb max. RAM vs. 1gb max. RAM
Video Memory: 6mb SGRAM (max) vs. 16mb SDRAM(min)
    Ethernet: 10baseT vs. 10/100 baseT
    no USB vs. 2 USB
    no Firewire vs. 3 Firewire
I would say you were misinformed.
The above comparison is G3 266mhz Mini Tower to G4 400mhz PCI Graphics. The G4's just get faster from there. And we won't even get into expandability......

    Hi Jadugar,
    Welcome to Lenovo forums
As I understood that you are looking for the graphics card which is compatible with your H530s desktop.
As this model is compatible with AMD Radeon HD  up to  2GB or NVIDIA GeForce GT 635 2GB.
Also you need to install the driver which supports these graphic cards.
Hope this helps! Do post us back for further queries.

  • Reviews for ATI Radeon HD 4870 Graphics Upgrade Kit for Mac Pro?

There's no review at the Apple Store on this [ATI Radeon HD 4870 Graphics Upgrade Kit for Mac Pro (Early 2009 or Early 2008)|http://store.apple.com/us/product/MB999ZM/A?fnode=MTY1NDA5OQ&mco=NDE4NDMx OA]. Googled and found nothing related to the Mac kit. Mostly PC based.
Should I consider this card? I need a spare/replacement graphics card for my Mac Pro (early 2008). The NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GT card has failed me twice.

    Just came out on barefeats:
    http://www.barefeats.com/nehal14.html
Shows new drivers with 285, also compares 4870.
If you play a lot of games on the windows side, you might also want to consider the 4890. I has recently became flashable (if you're into that kinda thing). It has a lot more leeway to be overclocked. Close to (or if your lucky) hitting the 1 Ghz core clock speed, gives very close comp to the 285, and at fraction of the price. You can get an XFX 4890 on newegg for $195.

  • No Video Scopes after graphics upgrade.  Why?

I am on a Mac Pro that came standard with the Nvidia GeForce 8800 GT. I installed a second card (identical) so that I can have up to four monitors. Since then, I have not been able to see any scopes when using Color. They worked previously, just not after the graphics upgrade. I just ran a software update and am using all current software as of 7-24-09. The other flaw I see is that when going to single screen mode, it will resize the windows to fit the screen however it does not resize the interface within the windows (first time I've seen this). Please help!

  • Graphic Upgrade Problem with K430 desktop - Unresolved!

    Hi,
Xmas 2012 I purchased a Lenovo IdeaCentre K430 Desktop from PC world.
PC World said it would be upgradable if I need to upgrade it.
    The system is:
    Intel Core i7-3770 CPU @ 3.40GHz
    16.0 GB DDR3
    1.8 TB Hardrive
    Windows 8
    Geforce GT 640
I recently purchased Crysis 3 and its not running very well, so I brought a Geforce GTX 660.
However when I installed and rebooted the PC, I was greated with a blank flashing screen?
other people have simular problems on the GeForce forums.
I have since took the card back PLUS 3 MORE for a refund, and very dissapointed that I can't upgrade this PC.
CAN SOMEONE AT LENOVO PLEASE REPLY WITH A LIST OF 'MODERN/LATEST GRAPHIC CARDS, THAT ARE COMPATIBLE WITH THIS MODEL STRAIGHT OUT OF THE BOX?
CHANGING THE BIOS SETTINGS DOES NOT WORK FOR ME!
It's been almost 2 years and I've still not found a compatible card, so much for the Ultimate Upgradable PC!
    Cheers.

  • Graphics Upgrade - 256MB of Video Ram?

It's time for a new iMac and I am having trouble decieding if I should chose the graphics upgrade to the 256MB of VR? I would say my computer use is typical although I do like to make home movies using iMovie. Thanks

    Hi Joe Keith!
You're in a bind, and I don't think you can "win" (if that were necessary). You want to sell your iMac G5 while it's still covered by AppleCare so that you can net the best selling price, yet the option for 256MB of VRAM has not yet been standardized as any iMac's base amount. If you wait until a new iMac has both Leopard and higher VRAM, yes, you will pay less for those features, but also probably net less about that same amount when selling the iMac G5 you have. [Based on Apple's refurb pricing, and on eBay selling prices, I estimate waiting to sell will cost you about the same $200 as would buying now and adding the optional VRAM and Leopard.] Plus, you have to wait and do without the (possible) advantages of the 256VRAM.
Since the only things we know for sure are that the new delivery date of Leopard is October, that 256MB VRAM is a current option in both 20" and 24" models, and that it will eventually come as the typical iMac base amount, you need to decide now what you'll be "needing/wanting" in the way of VRAM for the next two to three years. Certainly you'll want to have VRAM that will be similar to what will exist in most other users' new iMacs over the next 2 to 3 years, in which case you'll want to now spend the small amount to get the upgrade so that you'll be using (and in the future again be offering for sale) a comparably equipped machine.

  • Is it worth it?  ATI Radeon HD 5770 Graphics Upgrade Kit

Hey all. After several frustrating hours scouring the forums for information relating to graphics cards for early 2008 MP's, I thought I would just ask my question. Is it worth buying the ATI Radeon HD 5770 Graphics Upgrade Kit from the Apple store? What I mean is, is there a new graphics card option coming soon seeing as the 5870 seems to be "Unavailable" for ages.
I have heard rumours that Apple bought up all the ATI 5870's and ATI is re-branding and it's cheaper to buy a PC compatible card and flash it but I don't want to mess around with all that (I would have a windows machine if I did). I've checked newegg and OWC and they both only have the quadra card and there is no way I'm paying that much. I currently have the NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GT so any upgrade is good I suppose, I just always seem to buy something right before Apple releases the new version!
    Any suggestions is appreciated thanks.
    D

    Hi-
    Welcome to Discussions!
    Is the 5770 worth it?
It's not a bad price for a card that runs circles around the 8800:
    http://www.barefeats.com/wst10g6.html
Would be nicer if the 5870 was available.
It is billed as the Top Gun for Macs (currently), but the reported price makes it a dear upgrade.
As for the future, the 67xx and 68xx cards are in the pipeline, but, if as with the 57xx and 58xx, it may be almost a year before we see a Mac version....

I have also have been trying to get audio to work via MDP to HDMI, and have been surfing groups to find out how but it seems that many people have had no luck.
But with a little trial and error, I found that the video sets itself up (plug and play) however the audio settings need selecting and hey presto the audio does work.
