M7332 Power Supply-How can I tell if it works?

I have a power book G3 Lombard, I believe. I have purchased a brand new power supply from ebay. But my computer won't start. The battery is dead too. It has been sitting idle for nearly a year.
My question is- shouldn't I be able to test the output of the power supply with a voltmeter to prove that it works? I have purchased 3 different power supplies and they all produce no electricity at the outlet tip.

ABoney,
Welcome to the Discussions.
You cannot safely measure the voltage of the plug which connects to the power port due to its design. The center post has three insulated parts with the tip being one and it does not carry power.
Did the powerbook work the last time it was used (last year)?
First, try resetting the power manager:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=14449
If unsuccessful and since the 'book has been stored for a year, I would recommend this procedure:
Remove the power adapter, main battery, and optical drive; position the display vertically since the 'book will want to tilt backwards. Lift off the keyboard (place it face down on the palm rest...do not disconnect the ribbon cable), then disconnect the PRAM battery as shown in this photo; click to enlarge the top photo.
http://www.ifixit.com/Guide/Mac/PowerBook-G3-Lombard/PRAM-Battery/31/3/Page-3/PR AM-Battery
Without any reassembly, connect just the power adapter and try starting. If successful, press the power button until it shuts off (disconnect the power adapter if it will not shut off). Reconnect the PRAM battery and test startup again. If successful, shut down and reassemble the 'book; if it fails to start, disconnect the PRAM battery, then reassemble the 'book.
The powerbook will run fine without the rechargeable internal backup battery a.k.a. PRAM battery and these can be replaced for about $20.
The purpose of this procedure is two-fold: You may have a corrupted power manager that will not clear normally and/or the PRAM battery has an internal short that prevents startup.

  • How can I tell if it worked?

I had been told by Apple enteprise Logic pro support that the problems I had where partly caused by home folder permissions and ACL's. They had me run the repair permissions and ACL's in the home folder option on my ML Mini using its' own recovery mode and it solved many problems.
Now I have the same problems[ settings not remembered by logic] om my 5.1 MBP and wanted to try repairing the permissions and ACL's on its' home folder. I had read an article explaining that if I insert the original Snow Leopard install DVD/CD I would come to a screen that offered the choice of changing that home folders password, but also under that option was an option to repair permissions and ACL's for that home folder.
I tried it and all was going well except there was never an indication that anything was happening, like a progress bar , there was a greyed out 'DONE" button but after an hour it was still greyed out,not knowing how this should work since it isn't documented in the info I could find that came with the SL install disk, I stopped the process and tried the APP logic pro to see if the problems had gone away like they had on the Mini in ML.
Nothing had changed so I assume  the repair of the SL MBP home folder hadn't been done.
Does anyone know if that 'DONE' button must first turn blue before the repair is finished?
Or is there is a step in this procedure I didn't know about that would make it possible to use the 10.6.3 install Disk[Retail] to use the option there to repair home folder permissions and ACL's?
The retail install disk is 10.6.3 but I have of course moved up when given the chance to 10.6.8. I did check for updates after doing this and iTunes had a newer version and there was a security update 2013-4 and a Java update of some kind, I installed them all but the problem of some APPs not remembering their settings remains a big problem for my work.

Thanks ds store, I tried those already, but I am saving it bookmarked for future reference, very well done.
The fix from the Logic pro support guy did work in restoring the Hyper draw functionality on my Mini in 10.8 but I don't have the right CD for the MBP,I had 10.5 on the MBP when I bouht it and found a retail family pack for snow Leopard that as you said is 10.6.3,so that must be why the fix didn't work.
While I was trying it again I did see , after choosing the reset password dialog and clicking in the lower portion to reset the permissions and ACL's of this user, that there was a spinning cicle of dark grey bars[the normal one , not the colored one and it said "Running" that disappeared in just seconds without a blue color to the DONE button and since it didn't fix the Hyper Draw isssue I beleive you are right but I am getting old for all of Apples b***s**t and I think I will install again from the Studio 2 box onto a 1 TB external HD which I then can mount at a friends house[instead of taking a MBP ] when I am there to work on a Logic song, he is still in 10.6.8 so the new external should work unless the different IP causes problems, do you  have thoughts on this idea?
Another problem are part names in the score editor, they don't show up in the score under the Arrange, I assume Apple decided we don't need them there so they probably only are shown when the score is printed, which is very stupid because I will never need to print the score, I own a copy and entered the notes with the mouse since importing MIDI files for scores is so 1965,and Apple stole the XML file type from Ricercare to use for FCPX or something.

  • Nokia 6120c... 4gb SD Mem Card... How can I tell t...

i inserted a 4gb mem card in my nokia 6120 classic. how can i tell if its working. also where do i go to see what has been saved on the memory card. and how do i save on the mem card.

32GB will work BUT you need to format it to FAT32.
Depending on what version of WIndows you have, you may need to get a third-party program or force it to format to FAT32.
    Here's one how-to.
    http://www.online-tech-tips.com/computer-tips/formatting-external-hard-drive-to-fat-32/
Also, the Sansa firmware was made before there were such large storage cards, and it may not be able to show all the files on the card if you have a whole lot of small files.
That's because there is a limit on the size of the database, which reads information from the files--Artist, Album, Title, etc.--and makes an index from them. It will show thousands of songs, and I have filled a 32GB card and had it show every song.
But...there is a character limit on the size of that index, and many people have run up against it.  It's not an exact number of files; every letter makes a difference, so if your Artist listing is Rolling Stones rather than The Rolling Stones you might be able to show a few more files.
You can see if you have that problem when you use the card because your listings (Album, Artist) will stop before the end of the alphabet.
If you do have too many songs for the Sansa to show, you can get different firmware at www.rockbox.org  that can handle a much larger (possibly unlimited--I don't know) database. Read up on it before installing--it sits alongside the Sansa firmware so you can switch between them.

  • I had an Intel-iMac fried by lightening. UPS, surge protectors but it happened as I was reaching to unplug.  Cold now.  Could it just be the power supply?  Can I replace that myself?

This is the full question since I couldn't get it all in the box.
I have some complex questions regarding an iMac, a Time-Machine backup, and iTunes on an iPod.
I live about halfway up an extinct volcano about 12 miles north of San Jose Costa Rica.  Some months ago, we had a thunderstorm and as I reached to unplug my computers lightening struck about 50 meters from my house.  I had an iMac with a 3-Tb external backup drive, a PC laptop and a laser printer on the same power strip.  There was a definite surge and the light brighten and then power was lost for a few minutes.
When power was restored, the PC and the laser printer seemed to work fine but the iMac was cold.
First questions:  Is is possible that the power supply was fried and not other essential parts?  Would it be worthwhile to replace the power supply?  Can I, with limited experience and tools do it or need I take it to a technician?  My concern is that if the hard-drive is good, there is personal information on it that I don't want to risk.
Next question:  Do I need to replace the hard-drive before taking it for service?  How hard is that, can I do it? I have seen videos of the drive replacement on-line.
Those are my iMac questions, now the questions about backup restoration.
If there is a saving grace with this it is that the Time-Machine backup seems fine although I have only accessed the data through Finder.  I replaced the iMac with a Macbook Air with significantly less mass storage and I can't just move files to the Macbook.  My problem is that I have an iTunes library of some 10,000 songs on the backup and until recently on a 160 Gb iPod which was old and it crashed.  I have replaced the iPod but have not tried to restore the iTunes library to it because of my confusion about how to do that.  Can anyone tell me how I might do that or give me any insight into the process?
Thanks for any help you can give.

Quite possible, but working on iMacs is not easy, & PSU might be prohibitive.
Hopefully the Drive might have info on it, but even pulling that out can be a chore.

I'd get an external drive & restore the whole works to it, then boot from the External drive.

  • How can I tell if Droid 4 is fully charged?

Just received a Droid 4 in mail today after my daughter's Incredible 2 died. I have a Stratosphere that shows a battery icon while phone is on charger and powered off, but this Droid has a completely black screen. It's on charger and powered off. My daughter won't let me touch it because she's afraid I'll ruin it if I turn it on while it's not fully charged. How can I tell if it's fully charged before we activate the phone?

By giving the power button a Quick press it should Revel the batteries level like this.. in this photo shot taken.. b33

  • PLEASE HELP! How can I tell if my Imac has been hacked?

PLEASE HELP! How can I tell if my Imac has been hacked? I see a few people have asked this question but the responses tended to be advice on what to do once you've been hacked, not what can done to find out if you have been hacked. I have a late 2012 model imac. My sharing was off and remote logging was off. I use an external router that send wireless to about 4 consoles in the flat. I don't think I have any firewalls up (now looking like a mistake). I think I'm possibly being hacked  due to abnormal behaviour and most recently my camera was turned off all day (no LED) then I went to record something on Photo Booth, the application popped up displaying an image of me getting dressed (nightmare!) which happened hours earlier when the camera was off. This image quickly then disappeared and the camera began working normally. Very strange and alarming. Please help me. Any advice would be very much appreciated. Thanks.

    1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem. But with the aid of the test results, the solution may take a few minutes, instead of hours or days.
Don't be put off merely by the seeming complexity of these instructions. The process is much less complicated than the description. You do harder tasks with the computer all the time.
    2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. Backup is always a must, and when you're having any kind of trouble with the computer, you may be at higher than usual risk of losing data, whether you follow these instructions or not.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
    3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. All it does is to collect information about the state of the computer. That information goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. However, you should be cautious about running any kind of program (not just a shell script) at the behest of a stranger. If you have doubts, search this site for other discussions in which this procedure has been followed without any report of ill effects. If you can't satisfy yourself that the instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed:
Copy a line of text in this window to the Clipboard.
Paste into the window of another application.
Wait for the test to run. It usually takes a few minutes.
Paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page.
The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. You don't need to copy a second time. Details follow.
    4. You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken in “normal” mode, under the conditions in which the problem is reproduced. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
    5. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply. Don't log in as root.
    6. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in the browser window, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it:

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
    7. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste by pressing command-V. The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
    8. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "syntax error," enter
    exec bash
and press return. Then paste the script again.
    9. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, press the key combination control-C or just press return three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
    10. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, there will be nothing in the Terminal window and no indication of progress. Wait for the line
    [Process completed]
to appear. If you don't see it within half an hour or so, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, close the Terminal window and report the results. No harm will be done.
    11. When the test is complete, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
At the top of the results, there will be a line that begins with the words "Start Time." If you don't see that, but instead see a mass of gibberish, you didn't wait for the "Process completed" message to appear in the Terminal window. Please wait for it and try again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
    12. When you post the results, you might see the message, "You have included content in your post that is not permitted." It means that the forum software has misidentified something in the post as a violation of the rules. If that happens, please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.
Note: This is a public forum, and others may give you advice based on the results of the test. They speak only for themselves, and I don't necessarily agree with them.

  • Power supply from CAN hardware PCI board

I am using a PCI-CAN/2 board to construct a network among some equipments. I need know how to get the power supply ( 5v ) from the two ports of that board to a circuit which contains a PCA82c250 can controller from phillips. I have already tried switch the board's jumpers to internal power mode and external power mode but no voltage was appeared. How can I do this ????

Yes, this can be quite confusing. The internally/externally powered option refers to how the transceiver of the NI-CAN board is powered. When internal, the transceiver gets its power from the computer. When external, the transceiver gets its power from the V+ line of the CAN bus. Changing to external power will NOT bring any power to the V+ line.
If a CAN bus requires power, try adding a power supply that can produce the recommended voltage. In such a case it is best to either set the NI-CAN board to externally powered or do not connect the V+ line to the board.

The amount of storage that is shown on the box and in Settings are calculated differently - the package uses 1 billion bytes as a gig (i.e. decimal), whereas in Settings it's shown as the binary definition : http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2419
Also some space has been used for iOS, the built-in app and some space is lost due to formatting.

  • How can I tell what is "Auto Launching"

    User's (me) tech background:
Fairly technical user here, but getting pretty rusty. In a past life (late '90s) I was a network administrator as well as server admins for NT 4, Novell (up to 4.11), AIX, and HP-UX servers. Used to be really good at a command prompt ($ or #) in AIX and HP-UX as well as MS DOS. I do have ROOT enabled on my Macs and I am not afraid to use it. However, I know how severe the consequences can be (trashed a customer's AIX server once using a -R switch in the root directory), so I am extremely cautious and must be confident of the instruction. Can probably fix most anything with some guidance........
Here is the problem........ I have recently developed an error on boot, say within the last couple of weeks, where it tells me that some Vista application won't run because VM Ware will not initialize. The problem is VM Ware is not loaded on this computer (15" MBP model 8.2, i7 processor, 16MB of RAM, OS 10.7.4........ bought as a "refurb", never had a problem, have used this workstation for several months now). Boot Camp is not configured on this machine either. Nothing is in the Dock that would knowingly trigger this. When I go into System Information, I find nothing set as a "Startup Item" (screen shot attached) , making me think that I am looking in the wrong place. Where should I be looking?
Interesting enough, when I go to System Information, and look under "Applications", I do see a lot of Vista items, including apps from an older MBP that I do not connect to (on same network, they have "rights" to connect, I just never do as there is nothing on there I need). I have attached a screen shot of this as well.
Please, someone, can you give me some advice here?
How can I tell where this auto loading of this Vista app is coming from
How do I get rid of it
    Why did it happen "suddenly"?
Can I go into System Info/Applications and delete any Vista or VM Ware apps?
If I cannot do this via "System Info" can I remove (rm OR mv) the files from whichever system directory stores this data?
This is puzzling and quite concerning. I would be deeply grateful if there is a "Yoda" out there that knows how to fix this.......
    Thanks in advance,
    Bill

Managing your data usage is very important Bag02231958. I would like to thank ttipgem for the great suggestion to see what is using data on your phone. However, when you access the internet, social media apps, stream data, videos, music, etc. that uses data on your phone. Unfortunately, we do not have a list of what specifically is being accessed on the device to incur data. You do have the ability to view data records and time frames online via My Verizon http://bit.ly/xB4iTc

And everything was fine: imovie find each library, could work with it, or iphoto could edit the files.
But one day everything crashed at the same time: i opened iphoto to find 3 different scenarios:
    1) iphoto_library GREECE was there, but not the albums i prepared. no events. when double click in any of them: "Volume not found"
    2) iphoto_library ITALY was there, and the albums i prepared too, but empty.
in both cases I can only see the photos in 'photos'  because 'events'  shows some events with photo preview and some with no preview, just some kind of preset clipart palm tree, but if i enter the event, photos are there but again: when double click in any item: "Volume not found"
    3)  iphoto_library ISRAEL was there, the albums too, when double click in any of them: all OK
The 3 libraries was managed the same way. Meaning: Ive imported photos to iphoto from external disk LACIE in a iphotolibrary stored in another external disk PASSPORT. Also: I don't have unchecked the option "copy to file" or something like that. photos where moved, not copied. Also i have all the movie_libraries in the PASSPORT as well. What happened??
Solution? Nothing yet. Ive moved now all the photo folders from LACIE together in PASSPORT with the iphotolibraries but problem persist:
HOW CAN I TELL THE LIBRARIES WHERE TO LOOK FOR THE VOLUMES NOW?
"Volumes" are the original files aren't them?
Please help. this is so annoying to try and find in the forum, to tricky to explain
    I have a Macbook pro retina Yosemite 10.10.1 / iphoto 9.6 (910-29)/ iMovie 10.0.6
    THANK YOU
    Vicky

This is not clear, especially when you say
I don't have unchecked the option "copy to file" or something like that. photos where moved, not copied.
Especially as the message you're getting is typical of a library where the ' option "copy to file" or something like that' is unchecked.
    So it's a simple question:
Are you these Managed or Referenced Libraries?
A Managed Library, is the default setting, and iPhoto copies files into the iPhoto Library when Importing. The files are then stored in the Library package
A Referenced Library is when iPhoto is NOT copying the files into the iPhoto Library when importing because you made a change at iPhoto -> Preferences -> Advanced. (You unchecked the option to copy files into the Library on import) The files are then stored where ever you put them and not in the Library package. In this scenario you are responsible for the File Management.
