M92p Tower PSU Options

There have been a few threads about the propreitary 14pin PSU connectors and that there's no aftermarket support for upgrades. But it's been a little while, and Lenovo (around the office, my staff are calling them "Le-No-No" now) hasn't change policy, or offered an upgrade.
We have just received several of these i7 PC's and they all have the useless 280w PSU's. Those are severely limiting in what video cards can be installed, as anything over 55w will knock the PSU over. That means, no decent cards. A Quadro 2000 is, at 51W, about as far as we can go.
My CDW rep has been working to find a solution for us, but without any success. So I'm bringing it to the community before I have to re-evaluate our desktop hardware choice.
Has anybody made either an adapter or a PSU that will work on the Lenovo 14-pin motherboards?
(Oh, and yes, I've read http://forums.lenovo.com/t5/A-M-and-Edge-Series-ThinkCentre/M92P-14pin-power-supply-connector/m-p/84... . No help there. Thought I'd post a clear question here in hopes that someone has started making adapters.)
Solved!
Go to Solution.

This works fine.  I've done it in my M92p, among other things, with the intent of upgrading the video card.
Here's a link.

  • Thinkcentre M92P, RAM upgrade options

I have a ThinkCentre M92P 2992D9G. Currently it has the factory shipped 4GB RAM aboard, but I would like to upgrade the RAM.
Crucial is giving the options of DDR3 PC3-12800 Unbuffered NON-ECC 1.5V 1024Meg x 64 or DDR3 PC3-14900 Unbuffered NON-ECC 1.35V 1024Meg x 64 of various sizes whereas when I check on Lenova it shows me the 12800 versions only. I would prefer to get my RAM from a UK source (why does Lenova take me to a US site?), but I want to make sure that whatever I get is compatible. Is there anything to be gained by paying a little extra for the 14900 versions or will the system treat it as 12800.
I note that the system seems to be quite happy about not having memory installed in pairs, so I was thinking of getting an 8GB module taking me up to 12GB but offering the flexibility to retain the 8GB as part of a future upgrade to the 32GB maximum if ever it becomes necessary. Would 4GB + 8GB work or would 2 x 8GB (taking out the 4GB) be a safer option.

Both Crucial and Kingston "system specific" memory is guaranteed to be 100% compatible with your system.   Nothing to be gained by going with faster memory on this system since overclocked memory is not possible.   The chipset supports 1600 MHz max.
Installing one 8 GB module with the 4 is an option, but access above 4 GB will be single channel and slower than the dual channel that would be below 4 GB.

  • Z97 Guard Pro HDD issues

I have just purchased a Z97 Guard Pro board. I have 4 x 3TB drives which I intend to configure RAID5 and 1 x 240GB SSD for boot. Initially I configured the SATA mode in the BIOS to RAID. When I did this the RAID (CTRL+I on startup) randomly saw 2 or 3 of the 4 drives, not always the same ones). I set it to AHCI and the BIOS saw all of them. I then installed the latest BIOS. Now when I configure the BIOS to RAID, the CTRL+I option to enter RAID setup has gone completely and no drives are detected. In addition the SSD is now no longer detected either and simply flashes a red light indicating a fault. Now none of the drives are detectable even in AHCI. I then tried the 'failed' SSD drive in my old board and it was detected fine and accessible.
I'm guessing there is something seriously wrong with the SATA controller on the board, but wondered if anyone here had any experience with this board and setting up? One thing I'd really like to know is how fast the board should go through post - I get a black screen with letter/number (EG: A2) in the bottom right corner for up to 2 minutes before I see the logo screen and can enter BIOS - is this normal? It was doing that from the first moment I plugged it in!
    Thanks,
    Jon

Here is the full system details:
Case: Akasa Omega Black Aluminum Mid Tower
PSU: 460W Seasonic Platinum SS-460FL2 Fanless
    Board: MSI Z97 GUARD-PRO

    HDD: 3.5" Seagate ST3000VN000 3TB (x4)
FAN: NZXT Grid+ Digital Fan Controller
OS: Windows 8.1 Home 64Bit English
Following your comments and an email from MSI support, I disconnected all devices. Just have video card and keyboard connected.
Reset bios. Rebooted. Slight pause on 9C then longer pause on A2. Entered bios and enabled raid. Saved and powered off. Connected SSD only. Very long pause on A2. No "CTRL+I" option. Drive starts flashing red fault led. No drives detected. Repeated process with seagate drive instead of SSD connected. Same result. Reset bios again and left as ahci. Still no drives detected.
Connected same drives and sata cables in my old msi core2duo board and both drives detected in both ahci and raid modes. No flashing fault led on SSD either.
    Any other suggestions?
    Many thanks,
    Jon

    Hello Sekar,
I think I figured out the problem but still is strange.  Am trying things but SharePoint Online is extremely slow.
When I created the library list, I only created 2 columns, one called "Name" the other "Tower", other columns got in like  automatically and are created by:, modified by, modified date.
I went to edit one of the documents, and that's when I saw a field called "title" which does not appear See below:

The text in the "Name" fields was the same for all items so that explains why I was getting 10 times the same result.

  • E31 Graphics Card Advice

    Hello:
I have been shopping around for a few months for a replacement for my Thinkpad T60p.
I was convinced I would by a w520 but then I started considering desktops.
I’m semi-retired and don’t really need a laptop as much as I did when working full time.
Besides, my T60p works just fine for work related stuff and travel. I also have an x200t.
I have found 2 pre-configured E31s at a reseller that are the same except for the graphics card.
Model 2555-47U has a Quadro 600 card and Model 2555-48U has a Quadro 2000 card. Both have the Xeon E3-1230V2 CPU.
    The price difference is $300.
My usage will be for ripping CDs, A to D conversion (LPs to digital), raw photo processing (Canon’s free software; no Adobe), and maybe some video editing—files from a Canon DSLR.
Will the Q2000 benefit me in any way over the Q600 for these tasks?
Don’t mind spending the extra $300 if it gains me something.
I also looked at an M92p tower (Model 2992-A5U) with the i7-3770 CPU and Radeon 7450 graphics card.
It is about the same price as the E31 w/Q600, but has the HD4000 integrated graphics along with the Radeon 7450.
Would this be a better choice?
I have the perception that the E31 is "better" than the M92p because it is a certified workstation.
One bonus of the M92p is the 3-year on-site warranty, but that’s not as important as the CPU/graphics to me.
If it matters, I connect to an NEC LCD2190UXi (1600 x 1200) monitor and plan to purchase an NEC P241W (1900 x 1200). I use SpectraView calibration software.
    Any thoughts?
    Thanks

Fan probalby got off balance.  Some times after they heat up the expand and distort a little and it sounds like the cause.
Your probalby on the right track to replace it.  I dont' think you can replace the fan.   the one I suggested below should be pretty kick butt.

  • Discusion - - - Post Comment - issue

I have a Post Comment functionality where we are having different kits and assets. The users can post comment abt the kits and assets. For keeping the post comment file a new file is checked-in with the same name appended with "_D" and same account. Suppose a kit is having account "EMPL/MKTG", so the discussion file will also be checked in with the same account. Here the issue is that user apart from this account cannot post comment for the existing comment and they also cannot create new discussion file. So, is there any solution for it. So, that we can allow guest users also to Post Comment for the same.
Edited by: Saurabh Anand on Mar 1, 2011 3:00 AM

I think you have tow obvious options
1)Write a security filter customization (as shown in HowToComponents) to temporarily raise security for a guest user to comment on documents
    2) customize THreadedDiscussions component or raise an enhancement request for this. I do not think you can do this through config - Like to be proved wrong though.

OS: Microsoft Windows 7 Ultimate 64Bit
The system booted up for the first time normal. I installed Microsoft Windows 7 Ultimate 64Bit and then i installed the motherboard drivers from the CD. After i runned the Live Update 5 software from MSI. It found that i had BIOS 1.10 and wanted to download BIOS 1.11. Also it found all the drivers no updated. So i first start flashing the BIOS to 1.11 from windows and then i restarted the system and updated all the drivers. I continue to install all my programs for my work and at night i shutted down the PC. The next morning when i turned on the PC, the system started in black screen for 3-4 sec and then stopped. After that it started again and continued to load windows. Until today every morning it does the same. After a lot of hours that im working on it... when i shutted down and turn it on the next day it does that.
    Any clues?
Thanks in advance for your kind help.

Lot's of clues! Wanted v1.11 for what specific reason requiring a BIOS update? First, how did you find a UEFI/BIOS v1.11 that has been pulled because it is a bad BIOS? Two, never flash in a Windows environment or use Live Update, especially for a BIOS update, go to the MSI Website and download drivers and install them manually. Switch to BIOS chip B, and whatever you do, don't flash it to that bad v1.11 or the board will be a brick.
    Some of us have found this Beta UEFI/BIOS to be the best one;

  • System specs for indesign

I am upgrading to cs6 (Pr, Ps, Ai...) so i am thinking of buying a new workstation (at work). We buy all our pcs from Lenovo. I have the specs and i just wantend a second opinion about the systems potencial performance with Adobe cs6 products. We usually multitask in our workflow so some apps are almost always runing simultaniously (ID, PS, lightroom, Ai...). Will this system handle the load?
    Specs:
    Lenovo ThinkCentre M92p Tower
Processor: Intel Core i7-3770 (3.4GHz,8M Cache)
    Total memory: 16 GB PC3-12800 1600MHz UDIMM (2 DIMM)

    HD 1: 180GB SSD 2.5" SATA3 Intel 520
    HD 2: 1TB 7200RPM SATA 3.5 6Gb/s
I wanted to go with a faster graphic card but aperantly there is not enough space in the tower for a Nvidia htx 670.
Please tell me what you think.
    tnx

I believe the rule of thumb for scratch disk is 4 times the size of the largest file you work on, but you'll have a lot of trouble finding anything that small anymore.
My system is a bit over a year old now and I didn't spend money on SSDs because people I trust said at the time they weren't really ready for prime time. I'm using a 300 GB SATA II drive, which is vastly too large from just a space consideration, but it was relatively inexpensinve and extra space doesn't count againt it. An SSD would probably be faster, but I'm not convinced it would make enough difference to justify the added expense unless you are really a power user in Photoshop. Same goes for RAID, but if you want to hear all the arguments, ask over in the Photoshop forum.

Well, that's good.  If it had only been one of the problems that brought you here....
BTW, the transfer mode settings for your IDE/ATA drives can be accessed through: Device Manager > IDE/ATA Controllers > Primary or Secondary Channel > Advanced Settings > Transfer Mode
It would be a shame to use PIO mode, CPU utilization will go through the roof.  If Ultra DMA is a suspected problem, you can disable UDMA for the respective IDE channel in BIOS, while still using DMA mode in Windows.  This is a superior approach to using PIO mode.
I'm not sure why NTFS would cause a longer boot time compared with FAT32.  I've had both installed on my meager KM266 XP2000+ system, and tweren't much difference in boot time.  I would say 10 full seconds between POST and Desktop is about right.
I wonder, though, if your boot time wouldn't improve with a 7200RPM HDD vs. the 5400RPM you have.  I've seen a significant improvement in boot time going from a 5400RPM to 7200RPM.  Whether or not you will, can't say unless you give it a whirl.
You might try putting that CD-ROM drive as a slave on your primary channel with the Western Digital.  Some ATAPI drives just refuse to get along well on the same channel.  I've seen it several times.

  • HP Pro 6200 micro tower Pc psu upgrade

I wish to upgrade the psu 320 watt which is fitted to my desktop HP  Pro 6200 micro tower to a psu 500watt+ is this possible as I wish to install a separate graphics card

Hi, you can use a ATX-PSU if you do some rewiring:
1: The 4-pin cpu contact is ok as it is.
2: Clip the 12v, -12v and GND from the 24pin ATX and wire it to the 6-pin MB contact (color coded)
3: Take the "Pwr good" from the ATX- contact and put it on the small 6 pin HP special contact (grey I think) (clip the others on this special contact)
4: Use a external switch to ground the green "Ps_ON" from the PSU ATX contact.
5: Set in bios that it will start automatically after power loss.
Now you can start the computer via the new external switch.
You will have to press F1 during startup because it complains about the PSU fan is not detected.
(The pro & elite series is steering the PSU fan from the Motherboard)
I used a z400 475W PSU... it fits perfect in the case
