Mac 10.4.11 on PPC is 64bit?

Hi ,
I am having a MacMini with PPC Processor and Os is 10.4.11. I am not sure if it is 64bit or not ? Does Mac plans to have a 64bit on PPC ??

64-bit support required a 64-bit processor. In the Intel-based Mini, that occurred when
the Core 2 Duo model was offered. I doubt the PPC Mini capable beyond 32-bit; since
it had the same processor within it as an iBook G4 14", last model, at about 1.42GHz.
Sources about the Mini hardware specs don't tell much about 64-bit computing. In
the PPC architecture, the PowerMac G5 tower model was capable of 64-bit... in
some forms probably more so than others.
Current production appears to favor the complete line of Intel-based Macs; so if there
is any future plan, it is not available to us (and if it were, we could not tell of it.)
For true 64-bit computing, you'd have to get an Intel mini, it would seem; or a PPC
G5 tower, or new later Macs that have Core 2 Duo or better processors. The OS X
specifications and computer specs in Apple Support may help find more info.
My best guess would be NO to the question. Some software wasn't written to
take advantage of dual core or dual processors, either; so that is another matter.
Good luck & happy computing!

I agree with Grant. But to answer your question, that would be Word 2008. A quick search turns it up on sale at Amazon. You'll need to find it somewhere other than Microsoft itself, since MS stopped selling it when they released Word 2011.

  • Is it possible to start intel mac in target mode from ppc mac ?

    Hello all,
Is it possible to start intel mac in target mode from ppc mac ? If so does using target mode make ANY change at all to the target disk if user doesn't voluntariliy write stuff to target disk ?
    Thanks in advance !

Yes, you can, but with some notes. Braby sent some data, I add some other.
Target Mode has two basic roles:
    1. to turn a mac into an external drive and/or external optical drive (if it has one, until Air era, all had); you may use this way if your internal optical drive is damaged and you wish to use the optical unit of the other mac; or use it as a simple external disk for backup purposes or else.
    2. to boot from a such-booted mac.
#1 is usable with any two macs disregarding whether they are both PPC, both intel, or combination PPC-intel, as the behavior is like any external disk drive or external optical drive.
#2 is impossible if you want to boot the other mac, they must be both intel or PPC, as you cannot use an intel-based mac as a boot mac for the other ppc-mac, and vice-versa.
So said and clarified, you may use, but not if you intend to boot the other one if you wish to use it for various purposes implying boot.

  • Compiling: libpango-1.0.dylib has no table of contents on Mac OS X 10.5 PPC

I am trying to build pango-1.36.3 as a dynamic library for Mac OS X 10.5 PPC. This is part of the dependencies I am putting togther, so I can build my own copy of the GIMP. I have built my own GIMP in the past and have had no problems compiling Pango. However, this time, the build fails when trying to link the executable pango-querymodules.
I get an error telling me that I have some undefined symbols. These symbols should be in the copy of libpango-1.0.dylib that was just built. When I find that library and run otool -Tv on it I find that it has no table of contents. When I tried otool -tv to disassemble the text section I find that the symbols are indeed there, but there is an empty table of contents so the library cannot be linked against. I was able to complete the compile when building only static libraries, but I do not want to use this build as the OSX "way" is to use dynamic libraries. I am on a newer installation of OSX 10.5 than when I built Pango earlier, so something must be awry in my build system. BTW, this also happens when trying to build GDK-Pixbuf, another Gnome library. I have not found anything useful on Google after hours of searching.
Can anybody give me a pointer as to where to look to fix this problem?

    Hmmm, no expert, but...

  • Can I retrieve files from a modern Mac Backup drive to a PPC Mac?

Can I retrieve files from a modern Mac Backup drive to a PPC Mac?  I have been having problems with my Macbook Pro not starting up.  I need to figure out how to access files with my PPC Desktop; if possible.
What type of files can I access and what type I cannot?
My Macbook Pro: MacBook Pro, OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.3), 750GB HD, 2.2 GHz, 6 GB RAM
    My PPC: Power mac G4/Upgraded 1.2GHZ /800+RAM/3 HD =400+ GB, Mac OS X (10.4.2)
    Thanks in advance,
    God bless

You will need software that is compatible with the data files on the backup drive, ie. if they are .doc files you will need Word (or a substitute).
You don't mention what type of files are on the drive so it is hard to be specific.

  • Adobe 8.1.2 crashes PDF; Can't read PDF anymore Mac OS 10.4.11 PPC

Ever since Adobe 7 and Mac OS 10.4.9 I've been updating/installing and still crashes on PDF reads from within Browsers or Adobe itself.
I have an iMac 800 17" (Mac OS 10.4.11 with OS 9.2 PPC) recently maxed RAM 1Gb has backup eDrive by TechTool Pro.
    -still...
Adobe 8.1.2 crashes PDF; Can't read PDF anymore, I usually Google and just "read in HTML" but then can't see pictures.
I've tried removing Adobe 7 preferences from all drives. (move to trash->delete) Acrobat 5 is on the OS 9.2 partition.
I'm not big with the Unix shell commands on Mac OS X, so don't know specific typey things ;-)
    Any ideas???

And it doesn't even work well with forms. Only allows the first page of a form to be filled out.
I reported the problem as a bug, and the designer say its an apple problem. Its not. where area set up to be filled out on pages other than first page, there is an indication it is a fill-out area (Grayed out when clicked on) it does not allow for forms to be filled out. So its not worth the effort to even test.

  • Mac Dual 2.5 GHz PPC graphics card upgrade

I am looking for a replacement to my ATI Radeon 9600 XT card so I can fully exploit the new Photoshop CS4 features. It should be an AGP card (or will an PCI card work, too?) I guess and have at least 256Mb RAM. And I have seen that there's not a lot of those AGP cards available anymore, at least not for Macs. And it should be one of the cards that Adobe supports, listed here:

There are only two real options for some support:
    Geforce 6800 GT or Ultra
    Geforce 7800 GS
There is no way to get full support of all the features of CS4 (After Effects) in a PPC Mac.

  • Mac Apps run on a PPC?

Are there Mac Apps that run on a PPC or only for Intel based Macs?

There are many, many apps that run on PPC and even more that are Universal, which means they run both on PPCs and intels.  When you fins an app you like, see if it's either one of those, if it says intel only, you're out of luck.

  • Mac Mini 1.25 G4 PPC Dead?

I'm attempting to reset my mac mini to factory settings. For some reason it wouldn't recognize the 10.3 install disk, so I used my MacBook Pro 10.5 disk to reformat the mini. However, when I put in the 10.3 disk, it doesn't do anything aside from hang at the grey screen/apple logo and change over to the crossed-circle.
Now, only the OS X 10.5 install disk is the only thing it will recognize!
I've tried copying the disk contents onto an external and running the install program through the terminal native to the 10.5 disk and I get a "-bash-3.2# open: command not found" error.
I've also tried making images of the disk, and using them to "restore" the hard drive through the disk utility to no avail.
    What do I do?

I don't believe a PPC system will recognize a disk formatted with an Intel based system. I would put in the installation disks (CDs or DVDs) for your PPC system and when the option comes up in the menu bar to use disk utility, use it to repartition and reformat your disk.

  • On Mac. Colours changed after switching to 64bit mode (ver 2.7)

Been using Lightroom 2.7 on my iMac quite happily and after reading a few articles realised it wasn't running in 64bit so changed it.
Now colours are all out, most noticeable on reds:
    Before change
    After Change
Any ideas why this is happening?
Tried changing back to 32bit and still the same so something has changed.
    Thanks
    Andrew
P.S Posted this on another forum and just to clarify here also, whilst the above are exported jpegs, these are used purely for illustration. The colour change is happening within lightroom itself, not on export.

After some advice elsewhere it seems I have 'lost' some of the camera calibration profiles.
I only have ACR3.1 and ACR4.4 listed and checked on another machine I used I normally have it set to Adobe Standard.
So, how can I get the profiles back?
    OK. Problem solved. Reinstalled Lightroom.
    Usually fixes things

  • Mac OS X Leopard Server (PPC) "forgets" settings if Server Admin is left on

I'm not sure that I'm posting this question in the right place.
I have a QuickSilver 2001 Power Macintosh G4 (867MHz, 2x120GB PATA hard drives, 1.5GB RAM) running a fully up-to-date copy of Mac OS X Server 10.5.2. The hardware appears to be in good shape. The disks are new and I'm very certain the RAM is good. Apple Hardware Diagnostics finds no problem with the computer itself.
Normally, this system is very reliable. It works as a primary domain controller for Windows PCs. However, if by some chance I forget to close the Server Admin application, and the machine sits for a while without use, Server Admin will claim that "no services are configured" when I return. I also saw this problem on the 10.5 and 10.5.1 releases.
The services really do appear to stop working when this happens. I have Open Directory, DNS, DHCP and SMB configured. All four will stop responding.
Rebooting the computer usually gets the services going again, and Server Admin will then function properly. However, I always have to reconfigure SMB to be a primary domain controller.
Any ideas? Since this is just a test system, I did try wiping the disks and doing a reinstallation. The problem persisted.
I think this may be PowerPC specific, as I have an Intel Mac mini set up much the same way (Mac OS X 10.5.2 server, 4GB RAM, 320GB hard disk) and it does not appear to suffer from this issue.

Yes, I just discovered this problem on my own machine.
I just wanted to check some settings and discovered that the behaviour of the GUI of Server Admin was somewhat "erratic": First this "no services are configured" message. Some of the configured servers were marked with the usual green "up and running" bullet, others dark grey - those were normally configured and running and clicking the appropriate line seemed to force Server Admin to check the actual state and then turned also green. But sometimes configuration pages were "greyed out", or while switching through the tabs Server Admin claimed that where were "unsaved changes" which should be saved (or discarded).
And then SMB: this was light grey, as usual when a service is not running and clicking on it I browsed through the configuration tabs - everything seemed ok (all my settings were correctly shown, configured as PDC with right domain name etc.) - and I started the service. Then suddenly the configuration settings changed to the default settings - no more PDC, but a "standalone server" with workgroup name "WORKGROUP"...
Looks for me, as if Server Admin lost it's "source" file for the configuration (the file in /var/db/smb.conf says, that it is automatically generated -- does somebody were the source file is stored?)...

  • PPC Mac Mini (1.25GHz), KDS K-20MDWB flat panel, and DVI-D

I'm upgrading from an old CRT-based iMac G3/450 to a PowerPC Mac mini (1.25GHz) with a KDS widescreen LCD panel (Model #K-20MDWB) with DVI and analog inputs. The connecting cable is a DVI-D type at both ends, with no analog connections in it.
I would like to use the DVI output (without a VGA adapter) to run the KDS monitor. That's where the problem comes in. Although the analog VGA adapter works fine, I can't get anything beyond very distorted and incredibly jittery video (followed by the monitor giving up and reporting "no signal") from the DVI-D connection.
I know I've used DVI on this computer before, as it once had an Apple 30" Cinema Display attached to it. I also know that the DVI-D cable and the KDS monitor are working--substituting an Intel Core Duo based Mac mini resulted in perfect DVI-D video.
I have tried starting the machine up with the analog adapter attached, setting everything back to 640x480 at 60Hz refresh (settings that should work with any monitor) and zapping the PRAM to clear any incorrect information about the attached monitor. Nothing has worked, and I suspect that the video output on the computer is somehow broken or incompatible with the KDS monitor.
My question--is anyone successfully using a DVI-D connected monitor with their PowerPC Mac mini?

The original PPC minis certainly work with DVI-D cables and DVI displays (I have used 4 different cable/display combinations with my 1.25 mini so I know it works), but there have been a number of reports of specific displays that were simply not compatible and which produced a range of results from no video at all, to distorted video, or 'sparklies' or noise ribbons.
At one point there was a thread here (very long by the end) in which users were reporting which DVI displays worked and which did not, and other threads which discussed various potential causes or solutions. A search for 'DVI' might help (I'll try and dig up a link to the website where the DVI results were posted).
In short, it's not likely to be a fault with your mini, the cable or the display, just a lack of full compatibility, which might be resolvable using a display configuration utility such as SwitchResX or DisplayConfig X, or which might not be satisfactorily solvable.
ON EDIT: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=150291&tstart=550 is the link where DVI experiences were compiled, with the first post containing a link to the table of results indicating quite a number of incompatibilities.
