Mac 10.5 and Windows 7 networking question(s)...

So after about 5 hours of work I finally got my iMac desktop (10.5) to network wirelessly with my Windows 7 laptop.  All is well, except that my entire mac desktop hard drive shows up on the network even though I only have one specific folder set to "share" on my Mac desktop.  I can't figure out why the whole thing is showing up.  Any suggestions?  I've checked and rechecked my settings and only the one folder (not the public folder, but a different one if it matters) is checked to share.  The user on the Mac that shares info with the laptop is the administrator, if that matters.
Also, I have another apple laptop.  Is it possible to share both a windows laptop and a mac laptop with a mac desktop at the same time?  I don't think it is because you have to set file sharing to "smb" to network with windows and not use "afp" or "ftp" and I don't think mac can use "smb" between two macs.  Is that right?  I can't get the mac laptop to network and I assume that this is the reason, but I thought I'd ask.
Thanks in advance.

Mac prints. PC does not. Bonjour Printer Wizard found the printer, so there's some communication between the two (although the printer never came on, but I assume the AX knows what it’s plugged into).
One odd thing is that, after installing the printer driver (downloaded from Brother), Bonjour Printer Wizard listed Brother as a printer manufacturer three times, only one of which shows the HL-2040.
The las time I tried printing from Windows the printer turned on, but did not print.

  • Firefox (latest versions) on both Mac 10.6 and Windows 7 show "this Connection is Untrusted" on my bank site

This started for me 1/17/2011 on the savingsbank.com website:
Firefox (latest versions) on both Mac 10.6 and Windows 7 show "this Connection is Untrusted" on my bank site https://www.savingsbank.com
NO other browsers - Explorer, Chrome, Safari - give this error box on this site. Please advise if this has to do with the bank site? or Firefox compatibility.
Saw in a forum someone else having this problem and they were told it had to do with their Date and time being off?? I've been on several computers, all with the correct date and time and they've all shown this Insecure Certificate statement on my bank site with Firefox and no other browser.

I've looked at the banking site with IE8 and it does NOT show me that "This connection is Untrusted" window. (please see attached screen shot of viewing the site with IE8) It opens fine and has "Identified by Network Solutions" showing on the address bar as it always does.
The latest version of Opera (not earlier ones) does show a problem with the website's security certificate.
We've contacted the bank about this, and they say there's no problem with their certificate but are looking into it.
My question remains, why only Firefox and one version of Opera claim this and NO other browser?

  • Leopard / Bootcamp / Vista / Copy Files Between Mac OS X and Windows

On the apple page it says I can copy files from mac to windows?
"Copy Files Between Mac OS X and Windows
Copy, open, modify, or delete files in Mac OS X that you saved to your Windows partition. Leopard understands the Windows FAT32 disk format."
I tried installing Vista in bootcamp, but it says I cannot install in FAT32? So i format it to NTFS.
So here's my question, Can i still copy files between mac and pc, if I format into NTFS or am using vista?
    Thanks

I am quite a simple soul really and very easily pleased.
All I seek is a partition of some sort that I can save all my created work to - whether in XP Pro or OS X 10.5. But it has to be a large partition - probably a single partition on a large drive.
It would be sweeter still for Spotlight to do what it does (and it does on a FAT partition) and sweeter still for Time Machine to be very user friendly and do what it presently does not do and include created files into the TM.
Now that really would be very pleasant. Very pleasant indeed.

  • HT4818 I want to have an exFAT parition in addition to the Mac OS X and Windows partition.  If I create it before running BootCamp, it wants me to delete it.  If I create it in either Windows or Mac OS X afterwards, I can no longer dual boot.

I want to have an exFAT parition in addition to the Mac OS X and Windows partition.  If I create it before running BootCamp, BootCamp wants me to delete it before continuing.  If I create it in either Windows or Mac OS X after running BootCamp and installing both OSes, I can no longer dual boot.  What is the magic sequence to get this to work?

    I've got the same quandary.
After upgrading my hard drive to a Momentus XT Hybrid and doing a clean install of Mountain Lion, I was surprised that I couldn't format partitions separately and then restore from my clone of the old Windows 7 Partition. I found that I had to use the BootCamp Assistant to manage it all, which essentially meant getting rid of the partitions and starting again...
I now can't get my Windows / BootCamp partition to boot, after adding a 3rd, ExFat, partition, when it was working perfectly fine before. I just get a lot of dos booting failures and a final message that "No boot device is available, press Enter to continue".
See the attached message, that I get when trying to boot the bootcamp partition, through Parallels 7; which also worked perfectly fine before.
Be good to know if there is a work around this in Mountain Lion as, if not, I'm thinking I might skip Bootcamp altogether and just install a machine drive via Parallels. As suggested here:
    http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=1420754
I might even keep the virtual windows machine on a separate hard drive and then I'll have no need for the ExFat partitions altogether as that was designated for  sharing between Windows  and Mac.

  • External HDD formatting for use in Mac OS X and Windows

I've been gifted with WD (My Passport) 1TB External HDD. On the box it says it requires reformatting for use in Mac OS X.
I used the earlier discussions. I couldn't decipher the steps details as it was mostly by level 4 above.
Can any honourable member advice me on how to reformat my new external HDD for use in Mac OS X and Windows (As in office and during meetings I might haveto use wwindows system)
Also if done with formatting will this be allowing to setup Time Machine back ups.
Please be sure that I want to use time machine exclusively for backup, some earlier discussions mention that TM can also be used for OS booting etc.,
I would be greatful to all who will help me in these regard

Normally the drives are formated as exFAT which could be used by both a Mac and a PC out of the box.  Connect the drive to your computer it should be able to read it.  If not then the system will ask you if you want o erase the hard drive.  Select yes, it will format the drive for use with a Mac only.  This is the required format to use it as a Time Machine backup.  As stated in our post you would like to use this hard drive on both Windows and Mac, you should reformat the hard drive as exFAT in disk utility.

  • Need advice about Mac Pro and Windows networking

I currently have 2 machines at work: One HP Windows PC (high configuration) and a PowerMac G5 2GHz dual. I'm basically close to purchasing a new Mac Pro to replace both machines but need some advice. I do the majority of design work on the Mac. However I need the Windows PC to also do some design work but mainly use it to connect into the windows network at work. Basically I need to be able to access the network drives (which are set up with Novell Netware, with IPX turned off), Novell GroupWise email system and connect to the internet through the LAN. Can I do this with a Mac Pro, with either Bootcamp or Parallels? Is there any sacrifice in terms of performance in using Bootcamp or Parallels? The end result I want is similar to what I am doing at the moment - at the moment I use a PC to network and the Mac to design, side by side with each other. What I want is to do this from one machine, not two. (I also need the PC side of things as I need to use some software that isn't available on the Mac, eg. bespoke databases that run on PC). Is it easy to network under Bootcamp/Parallels? What pitfalls are there that I need to be aware of?

When your running Windows via bootcamp, you are essentially Running windows on a PC architecture. You will have all the same capabilities that you have now.
When you use Parallels to run Windows, you are running Windows as a virtual machine running within the confines of the Mac OS. The advantage is that you can run multiple OS's at the same time, and easily share files and data between them. The disadvantage is that the OS running within Parallels has a slightly performance hit, meaning you are not running as fast as the bootcamp version, but the performance hit is very slight. The only place that Parallels is lacking at the moment is in support of 3D or accelerated graphics. That is Parallels currently cannot make use of a graphics card 3D capabilities or advance GPU options. Parallels has stated their intent is to provide better graphic card support in the near future.
With all this in mind, I don;t see any reason why you cannot use Parallels for your Windows networking needs, and the Mac for your design needs, all at the same time. You will need of course to ensure you have enough RAM to support both OS's if you intend to run them at the same time.

  • Widget, and Windows Trackpad question.

Widget, Can I assess widget without having to going in dashboard? Like I can run widget standalone? How to install new widgets?
    TrackPad.
Does the trackpad, double tap works in windows xp? Or the only way to click is by clicking the buttoN? Does the right click works when you put two finger tap?

You know, there just may have to be some policy changes around here. There are a lot of us who are 1) new to mac, and 2) using windows and windows programs legitimately on an intel mac, specifically, the macbook. We have questions about using these programs on our macs, and I think it's understandable that we want to discuss them.
I really like mac OS, and everything about the macbook. It's the best computer I have ever had. But why do so many people here feel they have to be so hardline about microsoft and any microsoft product? Don't be a microsoft hater! When people ask on this forum about using other 3rd party software -- adobe, WoW, etc.,-- on their macbooks, no one tells them this forum isn't for that!

  • Zen Micro; Mac OS 9 and Windows

    hi,
i was wondering, i have a macintosh computer running Mac OS 9 and i also have a PC running Windows XP, do i have to have the harddri've formatted on my Zen Micro to use it on the mac (kinda like the iPod) or can i just use it like i normally do? also, is it possible to use iTunes (windows XP) for my Zen Micro? if so, how?
sorry for all the questions and thanks

Hi, I have been trying to run my zen on my mac for the past few days now. I am using os9..At first i tryed to just insert the player into my mac and it came up with a untitled folder with the files in the folder. (zen is in detachable disk mode) i can browse the different folders ect but when i try to transfer something to or from the zen my mac freezes. I have tryed the plug-ins ect listed in the FAQ section but i am sure those are all for os X as they are yet to work for me.
If anyone can help out here it would be much apreciated. Many Thanks!!

  • Early Mac Pro EFI and 64 bit Question

I have an early Mac Pro 2006 and have been unable to successfully install Windows 7 64 bit due to EFI incompatibility (after installation was able to boot to safe mode but unable to otherwise boot; device manager shows that MacPro incompatible).
My question is why Apple has not provided a firmware update for the early MacPros that includes the newer EFI version present in current generation MacPros??

Let's see, different motherboard and you don't think that matters? the front side bus and memory operate differently, the PCI slots are configured different.
You can't just "update" firmware to cross those bridges. And I'm sure there is even more involved between EFI32 and UEFI 2.x (EFI64).
Vista SP1 wasn't out in 2006, and UEFI wasn't finalized and supported yet.
Apple never provided 64-bit drivers for Windows on the 1st generation Mac Pro, and none of the iMac series has had UEFI or 64-bit endorsements.
You figured out how to install Windows 7 from inside Vista, and probably how to get Boot Camp 64-bit. All you probably need is a small Vista or Windows 7 32-bit system partition to carry you forward.

  • Can I dual boot with MAC OS/X and Windows

What is the best way to configure a dual boot on my MAC Bookpro laptop? Also, can I dual boot Windows 8 and MAC OS?

The first alternative is a dual-boot arrangement between OS X and Windows provided with OS X.
    Windows on Intel Macs
There are presently several alternatives for running Windows on Intel Macs.
         1. Install the Apple Boot Camp software.  Purchase Windows
XP w/Service Pak2, Vista, or Windows 7.  For Boot Camp
4.0 and above you can only use Windows 7 or later. Follow
instructions in the Boot Camp documentation on
installation of Boot Camp, creating Driver CD, and
installing Windows.  Boot Camp enables you to boot the
computer into OS X or Windows.
         2. Parallels Desktop for Mac and Windows XP, Vista Business,
Vista Ultimate, or Windows 7.  Parallels is software
virtualization that enables running Windows concurrently
             with OS X.
         3. VM Fusion and Windows XP, Vista Business, Vista Ultimate,
or Windows 7.  VM Fusion is software virtualization that
enables running Windows concurrently with OS X.
         4. CrossOver which enables running many Windows
applications without having to install Windows.  The
Windows applications can run concurrently with OS X.
         5. VirtualBox is an Open Source freeware virtual machine such
as VM Fusion and Parallels that was developed by Solaris.
It is not as fully developed for the Mac as Parallels and VM
             Fusion.
Note that VirtualBox, Parallels, and VM Fusion can also run other operating systems such as Linux, Unix, OS/2, Solaris, etc.  There are performance differences between dual-boot systems and virtualization.  The latter tend to be a little slower (not much) and do not provide the video performance of the dual-boot system. See MacTech Labs- Virtualization Benchmarks, January 2013 | MacTech for comparisons of Boot Camp, Parallels, and VM Fusion. Boot Camp is only available with Leopard or Snow Leopard. Except for Crossover and a couple of similar alternatives like DarWine you must have a valid installer disc for Windows.
You must also have an internal optical drive for installing Windows. Windows cannot be installed from an external optical drive.

  • Boot Camp and Windows XP Questions

I have a new intel iMac and want to install Windows XP (just for kicks, really). I have a copy of a Windows XP disc that I bought for my dad a couple of years ago. The Boot Camp page says that you have to have Windows XP with Service Pack 2. How do I know if my XP has Service Pack 2?? I went to the windows home page, and one can download Service Pack 2, but the Boot Camp instructions seem to imply that you have to have a copy of Windows XP with Service Pack 2. Anyone have any insight? Will my XP work?
iMac Intel, Powerbook G4   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

Just an idea for you. There is an entire Apple Discussion forum dedicated to Boot Camp and Windows XP.
Whereas, not everyone here with an Intel iMac has installed, tried to install or has experience with BC & XP, everyone there has or at least has an interest. You may attract help more quickly there.
The Forum is at the bottom of the main Apple Discussions page under Windows Compatible Technology.

I want to change my iCloud account. Buying iPad we gave a virtual (forwarding) email address.
We need to change to a real address.
But when we try to change the iCloud account, we can only change the password.
Note: we don't have a Mac, only an iPad and Windows.

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
Firstly, you need to change your details with Apple,  Start here, change your country if necessary and go to manage your account.
In order to change your Apple ID or password for your iCloud account on your iOS device, you need to delete the account from your iOS device first, then add it back using your updated details. (Settings > iCloud, scroll down and hit "Delete Account")
Providing you are simply updating your existing details and not changing to another account, when you delete your account, all the data that is synced with iCloud will also be deleted from the device (but not from iCloud), but will be synced back to your device when you login again.
In order to change your Apple ID or password for your iCloud account on your computer, you need to sign out of the account from your computer first, then sign back in using your updated details. (System Preferences > iCloud, click the sign out button)
In order to change your Apple ID or password for your iTunes account on your iOS device, you need to sign out from your iOS device first, then sign back in using your updated details. (Settings > iTunes & App store, scroll down and tap your ID)
If you are using iMessages or FaceTime, you will also need to log out and into your ID there too.

  • CD & DVD burnt on Mac OS 10.4 X cannot open on Mac 10.5 and Windows X

My client who uses Mac OS X v10.5 Leopard and Windows X could not open both DVD and CD that I burnt on my Mac OS X 10.4. They could open those discs only on Mac v10.0 Trial. The discs that I used were Maxell DVD+R (upto 16x) and Imation CD-R. I didn't use any particular sofware to burn them, just used burn disc funtion. What are the problems and how can I fix them? I would appreciate your advice on this!

p.s.  Please do not advise me to install the new free Mavericks OS.  10.6.8 is the latest version my Mac will run.

  • Antivirus to protect mac running osx and windows

I am looking for a all around anti-virus to run on my mac that will protect both osx and windows 7 running through Parallels 8

ClamWin and Microsoft Security Essentials for Windows
ClamXav for OS X, will also scan the virtual machine OS's files too.
ClamWin has found things MSE and ClamXav hasn't, good thing is Clam versions are run as you need it basically.
With your virtual machine Windows, make snapshots and only update those, keep the files and exported bookmarks on a external USB, this way you can keep the machine in a more pristine state.
Stuff can jump on Windows (and OS X too) merly connecting to the Internet when the vm starts up.
So scan, restore to snapshot, update when it's available, scan again and revert again because there is so much stuff NOT being caught.

  • Mac Slim keyboard and Windows

I was wondering if anyone could tell me if there is a way to activate the keys that would usually work if I hit the "NUM" lock key. I've never used a mac and I bought the keyboard and mouse cause I like it better then anyone I have at work. Can anyone tell me how to activate them? Is there something I need to hit?
    Thanks!

In the future, please search the discussions before posting, as there's already an existing thread not too far down in this forum that deals with the keyboard and Windows.
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1094089&tstart=0
Either way, since there are no Windows drivers for the keyboard, currently there's probably no way to accomplish what you're looking for.
