Mac 10.6.4 and CS5 - known problems? VERY slow, long freezes

I am on a brand new 12-core (dual 6-core 2.66GHz) Mac Pro with 16GB of RAM (and of course running 10.6.4). I have a new install of CS5 Master Suite (trial version, our box has not arrived yet), and primarily in my explorations with After Effects, it is running PAINFULLY slowly, mostly around simple interface stuff like scrubbing the timeline.
But this was also very apparent during rendering - a project that took about 20 minutes on my old 32-bit Core 2 Duo Dell with 4GB of RAM and CS4 took about 14 minutes on this new one under CS5 (running with 4 cores each using 2GB of RAM, and plenty of cores and RAM left over for other system stuff)... but I could see that a lot of that was due to HUGE delays in processing time as it rendered, long swaths of spinning beach-ball time. Had it not been for those, it likely would have rendered in about 2-3 minutes (as I would expect).
I have installed all available system and Adobe updates as of today (9/28/10), I am now running the updated AE 10.0.1... and I am having the same issues, with AE running very, very slowly. Scrubbing a project is nearly impossible - it regularly sends the system right to the beach-ball for many seconds; opening one project, which took 7-15 seconds on the Windows side (an old 32-bit Core 2 Duo Dell with 4GB Ram and CS4), takes up to 4:30 on the Mac under CS5! Same project, hierarchy, footage, etc.
I tried rendering it several ways: with 2 cores with 3GB each (leaving 6GB and 12 cores for other apps), with 3 multiprocessor cores each with 3GB of RAM (leaving 4GB of RAM and 10 cores for other apps), with 4 cores with 2GB each (6GB and 12 cores allowed for other stuff), with 7 cores each with 1.5 GB (leaving the minimum RAM and cores for other apps) and with NO multiprocessing on at all. Just for the baseline, the old Dell rendered this same file in 23:49, so all of these results are an improvement over that, but not nearly enough! Those long pauses still occurred - while watching the render, I could see it fly through parts, and then choke for many seconds at a time. Here are the timing results:
Multiprocessing Off: 9:57
2 Cores with 3GB each: 14:01
3 Cores with 3GB each: 9:36
4 Cores with 2GB each: 9:12
7 Cores with 1.5GB each: 15:12
This all seems pretty *******' random, though my testing methodology was far from iron-clad, as you can see. But either way, you would think with my system specs more cores would produce better results, not worse. I would have expected the 2 or 3 core configs to produce the best results.
The horrible lags seemed most pronounced on frames that cross faded, even a very simple crossfade - there was only one of significance in my video, where two videos crossfade over the space of about a second; each FRAME of that crossfade appeared to take about 20-30 seconds to render... or more accurately, each frame would render, and then there would be one of the insane processor lags. No lags this bad or pronounced happened on the Dell side - it was slow all around, but consistent.
Now, I did some tests with Activity Monitor open, and discovered some interesting things. When rendering with multiprocessing, each core used for rendering shows up as a process called "aeselflink" (as I'm sure you know), and at least a few of them are always at the top of the list, if you view activity by % CPU.
What was interesting is that while the render was actually processing (I could see motion in the render preview, as opposed to when it was choked), the CPU usage graph looked as you'd expect, going up and down between 5-50% of the CPU use. But when it stalled out and choked on a frame - or whatever it was doing - the CPU usage in the graph would PIN to the top as completely maxed out, with between 98 and 99% of the usage going to % User.
When those lags happened, the aeselflink processes often showed up as EACH using anywhere from 200% to 900% of the % CPU. Sometimes they were all pinned up there; other times only one or two seemed to demand that much time. Sometimes, however, things choked and the CPU usage graph showed NO activity, plain black idle for many seconds at a time. This doesn't seem to reveal much to me, but maybe smarter people can get some info from it.
Also, sometimes when starting a render, the aeselflink processes would show up in the Activity monitor normally, not demanding much time, but for a good long time (1-2 minutes) the main AE application process would show up red, saying it was not responding; during this time, the CPU usage graph showed almost no activity at all, just 0-10% User activity.
Whew. Ok, there's my random smattering of data. I hope this helps give someone in the know a better picture of what's going on here... this is a huge problem if it can't be addressed.
Matt

From the initial description this sounds a lot like the problems I've been having with rendering in After Effects CS5.
I have read a lot online about hyper-threading being the cause and have been adjusting various settings with multiprocessing and turning hyper-threading on and off. So far nothing has been able to give me consistent processor use during renders or reliable render times.
Here are the details of my set up:
Big Bad MF Mac
12 core Mac Pro, 2 x 2.93 GHz 6 core Intel Xeon, 32GB of RAM.
Boot Drive is 1TB
3 additional 2TB Hard drives RAID 0 for a 6TB Media Drive
Mac OS 10.6.4
After Effects 10.0.1
Project details are:
1920x1080, 23.976 FPS
Footage is all uncompressed 4:4:4 AJA Kona 10 bit RGB captured using Final Cut Pro from a Sony F950.
Project Color space is Apple RGB.
Using Keylight 1.2 to Key video and then placing the footage as a 3D layer, with several other 3D layers with 2 spot lights on the footage to generate shadows on the background layer.
Only effects used are Key Light 1.2, Levels, Hue and Saturation.
Output is 1920x1080 Animation codec quicktime at 100%, 48Khz Audio.
Multi processing is enabled. I have experienced the problem with many different settings.
Current settings are:
5GB for other applications
12 CPUs used for other applications
2GB per core.
All source footage is on the RAID. All output files are being written to the RAID.
Renders are amazingly inconsistent. Processor activity and render times are dramatically different when performing render tests with the same composition and identical settings. I regularly get the spinning beach ball and rendering pretty much stops for long periods of time. When watching the processors via activity monitor I have noticed many times that rendering starts out strong, peaking all processors being used regardless of multiprocessing settings. When this is happening the render looks like it is progressing as expected. Then after some period of time, sometimes 2 minutes, sometimes 10 minutes the processor use drops off and rendering slows to a crawl. When this happens the whole computer suffers. I can't even use a web browser.
After extensive testing I have noticed that I have my best luck setting up several items in the render que. Save. Quit. Restart. Turn off hyper-threading after restart via the processor pref pane from Apple. Open After effects and render. The problem will still occur, however if I'm lucky I can get good render performance for 10-20 minutes before the system starts to lag again. This is completely killing my work flow. I don't know what's going to happen from one render to the next.
I know this computer can scream under some situations, but something is terribly wrong here. This computer is not living up the hype on the Apple web site about Apple and Adobe After Effects.
Please help.
I'm going to add some more information just in case some engineer at Adobe gets his hands on this. HINT HINT
I set up a render before I left work last night. It was 7 clips as described above. I forgot to include the scrubbed audio to one of the comps so I went back and re-rendered the clip today. Last night the clip took 33 minutes to render. Today, after a restart and turning off hyper-threading. I opened After Effects, turned off multiprocessing and clicked ok. Then I went back and turned it on with these settings.
5GB for other Apps
12 installed cores (after disabling hyper-threading)
2 cores for other apps and 2GB per CPU.
So yeah, the exact same clip with audio rendered for me today in 5 minutes.
I should have some time today to run some experiments and do some testing. If anybody out there has any suggestions I'm game to try just about anything to help isolate the problem and get it fixed ASAP. I just hope this doesn't turn into one of those bugs where Adobe and Apple just keep kicking it back and forth and nothing ever gets resolved.

Ever since installing iCloud and Lion my computer is slow or freezes.  The color wheel comes on and My work stops.  I have only a small window of time where my computers will function normally during the day. I know many others that have the same problem. I'll get 20-30 minutes of work done and then a sync or something comes on, the color wheel of death shows up, and my productivity is shot.  I have to shut the computer down the hard way!  when it comes back up, it is still either frozen or slow.  I've checked in at the genius bar and all they say is that there have been some problems that Apple is trying to fix.  It effects Mail, Contacts, Safari, Calendar....yeah, pretty much everything.  My iPhone and iPad are not effected as much so I end up doing what I can with them.  I've seen the blogs out there and understand that many have the same problem.  I have been waiting to read about a fix but I have found nothing!  Any ideas?

Not enough free space on the startup disk can slow the system down.
Right or control click the MacintoshHD icon. Click Get Info. In the Get Info window you will see Capacity and Available. Make sure there's a minimum of 15% free disk space.
For startup issues...  open System Preferences > Users & Groups - Login Items. Delete any apps listed there then restart your mac.
And disable the Lion "resume" feature.
    Open System Preferences > General
Deselect:   Restore windows when quitting and re-opening apps
And Spotlight may be indexing... you can turn that off > Turning Off Spotlight | Mac Tricks And Tips

I realize is only 512MB of memory but I want to make sure that a new iMac will solve this problem.  Can the new iPhoto handle 10GB or more of photos?  Or do I have to go to Picasa anyways in which case I can buy any computer to do that?

The model of Mac is not partcularly relevant, it's the version of the OS and iPhoto that matter.
iPhoto - since 2006 - is good for 250,000 images.

  • I upgraded my three year old ipad to IOS 8 and it's working very slow and irregular, can I go back to the old settings?o

I recently upgraded my three year old ipad to IOS 8 and it's working very slow and sometimes freezes. Can I go back to the old system?

No, downgrading the iOS version is not supported by Apple.
You could see if any of the following improve things :
    - closing apps via the iPad's taskbar : iOS: Force an app to close.
    - if having problems with Safari, clearing its history and data : Settings > Safari
    - soft-reset : press and hold both the sleep and home buttons for about 10 to 15 seconds (ignore the red slider), after which the Apple logo should appear - you won't lose any content, it's the iPad equivalent of a reboot.
    - backing up (and copying any purchases over to your computer's iTunes library via File > Devices > Transfer Purchases) and restoring
    - adjusting settings e.g. turning 'reduce motion' on (Settings > General > Accessibility), turning off 'background app refresh (Settings > General), turn off multitasking gestures (Settings > General)
    - resetting back to factory defaults (after copying off purchases and any documents, photos etc that you want to keep) and then resyncing it back

When I upgrade to yosemite, when I have to send and receive mail is very slow. Mails take a long time to be send and receive, and the mail boxes disconnect frequently. I am using the yosemite mail server and don't have this issue with user with Maverick.
    Many Thanks

So let me see if I understood it right... In Mavericks you didn't had this issue, this only happens in Yosemite and you are using Apple Mail, not another mail client. Have you tried in System Preferences > Internet Accounts unchecking and rechecking the email checkbox on your account?? If that doesn't works try deleting and adding your account.

I have Adobe Photoshop Elements 11 and it's running very slow.  Have no idea what's wrong or how to fix.  Op Sys is Apple, OS X, ver 10.9.1.

    If so, then see:
    http://barbarabrundage.com/2013/10/28/photoshop-elements-and-os-x-mave ricks/
For PSE 11 you want to get
    com.adobe.PhotoshopElements.plist
    Adobe Photoshop Elements 11 paths
    Adobe Photoshop Elements 11 settings
    if you use organizer, also
    com.adobe.Elements Organizer.11.0.plist
    com.adobe.ElementsOrganizer11.plist
If you use raw, Adobe Camera Raw < version > Prefs
and any lockfiles with the same names.
Since you've already run PSE, go into the Saved Application States folder and delete any for PSE.
    Repair permissions and try again.
Also go to the organizer preferences>media analysis and be sure everything there is off (except face recognitiion, if you use that).

  • Samsung 1.5TB External HDD problems - very slow and crashes Mac

I recently bought a Samsung 1.5TB Story Station External HDD, to supplement my full iomega 320GB drive (firewire). The Samsung is USB 2.0, and I quickly realised that the Mac only has USB 1 - i.e. very slow. The HDD took about 15mins to even register in Finder and transfers were inevitably slow.
I bought a new USB 2.0 PCI card, with 4 external and 1 internal USB 2.0 connectors. Installed securely and correctly, it should be plug and play right? Wrong. Firstly I checked with a Compact Flash card that the USB 2.0 was working and it is - very fast upload of images to the Mac. Then I tried to move a group of files from the Samsung to the iomega drive and it started off transferring really fast, saying under one minute to perform the task. Then it froze, and slowly worked it's way up to 2hrs remaining. I had to crash out of it in the end. I tried a few simpler transfers, but it froze in finder each time. Now the Samsung drive is not even getting recognised by the Mac.
What am I doing wrong? Is there a shut down/eject order that I have not been doing? I usually just shut down the Mac with the HDDs on, and that has never been an issue for the iomega drive.
Any help or links appreciated. PSD

    Hi-
    Welcome to Discussions!
External drive controller chipsets vary greatly.
Along with this, and a big problem for PPC Mac users, is that the makers don't take PPC Mac architecture into consideration.
The first mistake is to rely on USB/USB 2.0 for connection.
Firewire is +the surest+ bet for an external drive for a Mac.
USB 2.0 is for WinPC machines, which often don't have firewire.
It is NOT a reliable connection method for hard drives.
Second, these ready made externals are often a problem with PPC Macs.
WD MyBook, Seagate FreeAgents, and others, are often just no good.
I don't see why the Samsung would be different.....
The best way to use an external drive, is to get a firewire drive enclosure kit that has an Oxford chipset, and then install the drive of your choice inside.

These all have drives installed, but the case and controller is definitely no problem:

    I would return the drive.

  • I have been trying to burn a movie in iDVD and it has been VERY slow.  Never had problems in the past.  HELP!

Hi there, I have been trying to burn a movie I created in iDVD.  When in the "creating your DVD" it is VERY slow saying it will take over 6 hours to burn the movie.  I have never had this problem before.  It also won't let me minimize the screen, I just get the beeping noise that something is wrong, but no pop up window telling me what to do.  Does that make sense?  Also the black & orange burn wheel is spinning VERY slowly and will often just stop.  Any help would be much appreciated.  Thank you!

    Hi
When iDVD goes slow to ridiculously slow - it usually depends on - low free space on Start-up hard disk
    • I set for a minimum of 25Gb free space
    • 10Gb might work but slow
    • 5Gb - slow and un-stable - DVD usually doesn't play
    • <1Gb - iDVD might not even start and even so Mac OS runs into problems.
    Else
Not knowing the origin to Your problem - General approach when in trouble is as follows.
    • Delete iDVD pref file - *or rather start a new user/account* - log into this and re-try
    iDVD pref file resides.
    Mac Hard Disk (start-up HD)/Users/"Your account"/Library/Preferences
    and is named.
    *com.apple.iDVD.plist*
While iDVD is NOT RUNNING - move this file out to desk-top.
    Now restart iDVD.
    • Free space on internal (start-up) hard disk if it is less than 10Gb should rather have 25Gb
    • Hard disk is untidy. Repair Permissions, Repair Hard disk (Apple’s Disk Utilities application)
    • Program miss-match. iDVD 5.0.2, Mac OS X.4.11 AND QuickTime 7.5.5 - is OK - DON’T work under Leopard

I deleted every iDVD application and folder from my boot drive,

  • I work with photoshop CS5 and the stamp is very slow. Why?

I work with photoshop CS5 and the stamp is verry slow. Why?

If you can afford it, go with a Crucial M4 SSD.
If your in a limited budget, go with a Seagate Momentus XT 750GB.
The SSD will be the fastest one and the Seagate being faster than a conventional drive.
If you decide to go conventional, avoid the Western Digital Scorpio Blue.  They tend to have issues with Macbooks.

  • Adding songs and editing info is VERY slow on brand new mac

Hello, I have a brand new macbook computer. I'm trying to add songs to my iTunes library, which is mostly empty at this point. As I try to add songs to iTunes, they take quite a bit of time to get added into iTunes. If I try to edit their info (through Get Info), it takes forever for the information to go through. I have my preferences set to organize my music library folder. I noticed that only songs that are in my iTunes Library folder take a long time to get added (so, adding music that's in a random folder on the computer and isn't in my organized library folder gets added to iTunes very quickly, but if I'm adding music that's going to get organized in my library folder, it's very slow.)
I don't remember it being this slow on my older macbook. Any ideas as to why this is going so slow? It's clearly not a RAM or size problem, since this is a brand new macbook.

    Hi JGG,
Thank you for your reply. I forgot to mention that I house my iTunes library on an external drive. I understand that, of course, anything hosted off of my computer would be slower than if it was on my laptop, but this still seems much slower than it was on my older computers (where I also used an external to host the music). Also, I mentioned earlier that if I added music to iTunes that was in a random folder on the external, it would show up instantly on the playlist; but if I added music that was within my iTunes library-folder on the external, it would upload very slowly. Even after it's on the iTunes playlist and "organized" within the Library-folder with the correct titles/folder names, just editing a song (for example, to change the year) would take a long time as well.
Edit: And, I just realized, there is a big delay when I try to click on a song to play. The little spinning color wheel pops up for a few seconds every single time I click to play a new song out of my playlist. I'm sure that NEVER happened in the past on my old macbook when I also used an external drive.
    Thanks for your help!

    Hello,
Since i installed Itunes 7.0.0, i notice that when i launch it, my whole pc is getting very slow. My mouse doesn't move properly.
Il still have the problem with 7.0.1 and 7.0.2...
Then, i thought that i had a big library (nearly 20.000 songs). All my music is inside (all my cds since i am 13 years old !). Maybe it's a problem?
As 20.000 is the number of songs that you can get on an 80GB Ipod, i don't think it should be a problem in Itunes.
I can see Itunes is 95 752 Ko in RAM memory!
Even downloading music i buy and posdcasts from the itunes store is getting very slow
After closing Itunes, my pc gets back its natural speed.
My PC has Windows XP system, 2GB of RAM, AMD AThlon 3700+ (220 Mhz) and frequently formatted and reinstalled.
Help would be much appreciated if you have a solution.
Sorry for my bad english. This is not my native language.

I was trying to solve the same problem on a Mac, and found a slightly different solution. When I tried "Date Modified", I was seeing only the dates when the songs were originally added to my old Mac. So in View Options, i checked the "Date Added" column, which showed me all the duplicates as having been added on the same date. I was able to easily delete these and recover 20gigs of space.
