Mac 10.6 bootcamp partition missing
In a bit of a panic..
I've had Bootcamp running with a secondary windows partition for years. (Set it up when I bought the rig in 09)
This morning I was on FB, reading articles, etc.. when Chrome stopped responding.
Couldn't force quit.. had to hold the power to reboot.
It rebooted into windows.
Shutdown immediately, and rebooted again. Held down the option button. and my OSX partition was missing.
What the ****...
Then I tried to get into windows to see if I could access the mac partition.
However the windows side wanted to run a diagnostic because I shut it down.
Let it do that, black screen.. No response..
I have not seen any problems with the Hard Drive..
Thoughts?
I can still boot it up and see the windows partition in boot camp.
Poked around in forums more.. Copied this question to the bootcamp topics..
If anyone has any suggestions I am figuratively all ears..

After that I follow this solution
Rebuild using start/end offsets from Testdisk DeepSearch using GPT Fdisk (http://sourceforge.net/projects/gptfdisk/)
Sudo gdisk /dev/rdisk0
P (print the full list of parts)
D (delete)
4 (part 4)

I have problem on point 9,
output

BootCamp Partition- Missing Operating System Windows Startup Repair
Hi.
I made the mistake of creating a new partition on my HD with an existing Boot Camp partition. I tried to follow the advice of Loner T in this thread https://discussions.apple.com/thread/6574886, and got made the Windows installation bootable. Upon starting up Windows the screen displayed 'Missing Operating System', I tried doing a Windows Startup Repair using the Windows Installation Media without any luck.
Here is the current state of my hard drive.

00000200Please download GPT Fdisk (http://sourceforge.net/projects/gptfdisk/) and Testdisk (http://www.cgsecurity.org/wiki/TestDisk_Step_By_Step).
1. Your GPT is corrupt.
2. The MBR is incorrect.
3. You do not have a valid NTFS header.
You need to run Testdisk first to find the correct NTFS header. Please see http://imgur.com/a/PjmnK for the Testdisk screens. -
Bootcamp partition missing after installation of OS X Mountain Lion
I am not able to locate a hard-disk partition on my Bootcamp after installing OS X Mountain Lion... It seems that the partition is there, but not showing on Drive list.. mapping problem?
Does anyone has a similar situation?
i want to recover the data anyhow...Read this thread:
Re: Repairing Boot Camp after creating new partition (Updated)
Might be some help there that applies to your case. Sounds similar. -
I went to reboot to windows yesterday but it seems to have disappeared. All that I see when i reboot is my mac os and a recovery one....no windows. It is still however, showing in disk utility but as a folder. Do i have to uninstall and reinstall it all again? Hope someone can help. Thanks in advance

Bootcamp partition appears empty to mac after restore...
I recently chose to upgrade the HD in my 2007 macbook, in order to squeeze another year or 2 out of it. Setting up the mac part was no problem - just used superduper to copy the old disk to the new one while it was temporarily mounted in an external drive, then replaced the disk - worked perfectly.
The bootcamp partition is another story. I did a bunch of research on how to best transfer my old windows 7 setup, and found the windows system backup and restore method was advised, and easy, so went with that method. Ran boot camp assistant, had it create the new ntfs partition the same as the old one, and ran the system restore from the windows setup disk, and it worked fine. Windows 7 works just as it once did, and I ran the bootcamp driver setup again just in case. Everything appears hunky dory on the windows side of things, and I can easily boot back into the mac os from it.
So everything appears ok, but here's the problem - once I return to mac os, the bootcamp partition appears empty, and I don't have the option to boot to it via the Startup Disk in System Preferences, which is how I always used to boot to windows. I can still get into windows via the bootcamp assistant, but that's a really tedious affair that involves inserting the windows disk.
Edit - I should add that I can also get into windows by using the option key during startup, that seems to work ok. But I still can't access the files in the bootcamp partition, which is a big problem - can this be fixed?
Any ideas?
Message was edited by: sduck409Thanks for the many ideas Hatter. I think you jogged my brain in the right direction. I tried the convert to ntfs thing, but the windows install already thinks it's ntfs. And since the disk is actually formatted as fat32, the fat is screwed up. I actually knew that thing about boot camp assistant only creating fat32 (once, a while ago), but forgot that detail in my hurry.
So I ran bootcamp assistant, and deleted the bootcamp partition, with the idea of starting again. Ran bootcamp assistant again to restart the process, but this time it said Bootcamp assistant can not run - this disk is not supported. Hmmm. I had already inserted the windows disk and my windows backup volume.
SO I figured I'd try restarting my computer; maybe that'd reinitialize the disk or something and bootcamp assistant would work. Hey, stranger things have worked in the past. But, for some reason the windows disk started up! And started copying files. I aborted it, but it was too late - it had somehow mangled my mac disk - it was now a empty fat32 disk - I had to reboot from the mac os x setup disk and run disk utility to find this out. So now I'm restoring from my time machine backup (I absolutely love time machine btw).
The backup is going to take another 3 hours, so to get some stuff done I resurrected an old sony vaio win xp laptop that dates from 2000 I think. Holey moley, this thing is crappy.
Anyway, thanks for the help. Once I get the machine back up and running, I'll try it again, and this time make sure the disk is actually ntfs before restoring to it. -
Regaining lost space after error when removing Bootcamp partition?
I am running snow leopard 10.8.2 and had a bootcamp partition of 115gb for Windows 7. Recently I tried to remove the partition using the bootcamp assistant and it displayed an error message that it was unable to remove the partition, however the icon for the partition disappeared in finder and the startup disk menu. I tried to remove the partition again in the same way and this time the error message did not come up, but the utility froze while it was removing the partition and after waiting for an hour or so I had to force quit the utility and restart my Mac. The bootcamp partition doesn't show up, but I did not get the 115gb back? Any ideas how I can reclaim it? Any help is much appreciated!
-EthanNotice the 76GB Free Space in the diskutil cs list output.
Unless Kappy has alternative suggestion, I suggest the following (the last 'b' is bytes).
diskutil cs resizeVolume <UseTheLongStringUUIDAboveTheMacintoshHDLine = DB68...> <UseTheSizeInBytesUnderTheLogicalVolumeGroupEntry = 250140434432b>
diskutil cs resizeVolume
Usage: diskutil coreStorage resizeVolume
lvUUID|MountPoint|DiskIdentifier|DeviceNode size
Resize a logical volume, which is one of one or more disks that consume storage
out of a logical volume group. The logical volume group will have more or less
available space after this operation, if it was a shrink or grow, respectively.
Example: diskutil coreStorage resizeVolume

I have Windows 7 on a Bootcamp Partition on my MacBook Pro. I want to start using Mac OS Mountain Lion full time now and erase the Bootcamp Partition.
I was going to use the Migration Assistant to move my Windows files (such as bookmarks, email, my enormous iTunes Library etc) over to the Mac partition but the problem is that Migration Assistant must be running on the Windows partition at the same time. Difficult to do when they're both on the same hard drive/computer.
I know i could just copy all the files i need onto an external drive but I'm afraid i'll miss something. Plus its alot of work. I'm thinking there must be an easier, mostly pain free way of making the move to MacOS permanently. I can't think of what it would be though. Any suggestions?Yes, you can simply install the existing drives in the new computer's drive bays. Order is not relevant.
I don't see any reason why Windows will not boot on the new computer from the existing drive. If Windows considers that the hardware has changed all that's required is re-activation. As far as hardware interfaces all you need do is to install the Windows drivers from the installation DVD that comes with the new computer.
Snow Leopard will have to be installed on your existing hard drive, and it must be either a later build or later version than what is shipped with the new computer. Otherwise you will have to reinstall Snow on your existing drive using the installer DVD that comes with the new computer. SL by default does an Archive and Install so your drive is not erased when you reinstall OS X.
If you actually have software that ties its registration to some unique hardware ID, then all you need do is re-enter the serial number. Apple's software does not usually connect the serial number to the hardware, so I doubt you will have any problem with it. -
Hello,
I have been trying to install Windows 7 on my macbook pro (mid 2009, MBP53). I have successfully created a bootcamp partition using the assistant. When the computer tries to boot from the windows 7 install dvd, the screen is just black. The dvd spins for a bit, then stops and the computer is just black (no blinking cursor).
Any advice would be very appreciated.
Thanks. What kind of an install DVD are you using for Windows?
You can use any DVDs that are hardware specific. Only the full non-hardware soecific DVDs work on the Mac.

BOOTCAMP partition not showing up on Mac OSX after resize
Hello, I have a iMac 27" late 2013 with OSX 10.9.5 and recently I resized my bootcamp partition and reformatted the OSX partition for a clean install. After the formatting, I cannot see or access the Bootcamp partition anymore. I really don't want to have Windows anymore, but I messed up thinking I would be able to recover my files. I tried following these answers but none of them worked for me. Now I can try to boot into Windows, but it gets into a disk error.
- I tried this solution without any success: http://nerdr.com/bootcamp-partition-lost-repairing-mac-partitions/
- I tried LonerT's solution on this post but it was hard to apply to my case: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/6574886

Could anyone give me some hints? I tried following other solutions but I don't really grasp how partitioning works on the OS X.

So I got a new hard drive for my early 2009 version Mac Book Pro and some new memory to speed the little guy up. I was trying to copy the Mac and BOOTCAMP partitions onto the new drive, and I am close, but not home free.
Here's what I have done so far:
I got an external cage thing for the new/old HD.
I put the new HD in the cage and cloned the mac and BOOTCAMP partitions to the new disk while booted from a DVD.
I put the new drive in the machine and the old one in the cage.
I booted the machine and it loaded the mac side fine.
When I tried to use the 'option' key to, select the system I wanted to boot into on the reboot, it didn't show me the windows (bootcamp) option.
That's where I am at. When I go into disk utility it shows my BOOTCAMP partition in the list of logical disks under my disk, but it is grayed out. I can mount it, but when I restart, I can't select it. I feel like I am so, so close. What do I need to do?
(BTW, the old drive, the dude I am trying to clone, still exists in its entirety in the cage; I could put it back in and go from there if I had to.)
Let me know what you all think!
-RicardoDo you mean you want to reinstall Leopard? If you want to boot from your Leopard DVD do this:
Booting From An OS X Installer Disc
1. Insert OS X Installer Disc into the optical drive.
2. Restart the computer.
3. Immediately after the chime press and hold down the "C" key.
4. Release the key when the spinning gear below the dark gray Apple logo appears.
5. Wait for installer to finish loading. -
Hello Everyone,
I have a MacBook older model with me.I am running 10.7.6 on that, I was trying to use BootCamp to install windows on my mac. Since BootCamp can only work on a single Volume, I partitioned my Hard Disk to one volume.
Using BootCamp I installed windows and everything worked fine. After installing windows and testing everything, I switched back to OS X and this time I tried to make another partition on my single portioned Mac volume and named it Backup. That too worked. Now I have three Volumes
1)Development2)Backup3)BootCamp.
Next when I switched to Windows, It should the classic error, No Bootable device found, please insert a Bootable CD and press any key. When I tried to enter my Mac OS X install DVD and by pressing option key, it does not show me the proper Mac OS X development volume. It keeps going back to the No bootable device found message.
Any help will be much appreciated
Regards
Mithunyou can't add a partition in between - you put Windows to a new partition number.
GPT (GUID)
EFI
Mac HFS
Lion Recovery
Windows
And now you have two HFS
One partition and one Windows (plus Lion Recovery).
If you were to have more, it can't be before Windows for one thing. -
I am planning to format my Retina MacBook Pro. However, I have a bootcamp partition. If I were to format my Mac, will the bootcamp drive be gone too?
It all depends on what you do.
If you reformat the partition containing OS X then nothing will happen to the BootCamp partition.
If the other hand you reformat the whole disk then it will be gone.
Why do you think you need to reformat the drive?

How to clone bootcamp partition on Mac?
Hello!
I currently have a 200GB bootcamp partition on my 2TB internal iMac hard drive. I want more space for my windows partition. I have a spare 500GB Hard drive laying around, and was wondering if there was a way that I could clone the bootcamp partition from my iMac onto that drive. I'd still want it to be bootable. That way I could have an extra 300GB of space without sacrificing my internal HD. Is there an easy way to do this? Thanks!
ThomasMac OS Yosemite and Win8.1 on external Thunderbolt/USB 3 drive.
How to:
Remember before you start: Make sure you have updated backups on everything involved, unmount all not necessary drives. during the different stages unmount the drive not working on i.e. if you are doing things on the external unmount the internal. Take your time and be sure to choose the right drive and partition so you don’t mess everything up.
1. Update all Mac OS updates from Mac App Store.
2. Run Boot Camp on internal (original) drive, including make a USB stick drivers for Win (Can take forever on a slow USB stick, but will get there) Install Windows from DVD or similar (I did from a bought DVD, no OEM allowed)
3. Test-run and configure and add all updates for Windows and installing an Antivirus app is also good to do.
4. Install a new fresh Mac OS on an external USB or Thunderbolt drive (or use CarbonCopyCloner to get a copy of internal Mac OS)
5. Check the new external Mac OS by rebooting to it. if Ok, reboot to internal again.
6. Run WinClone 4 and make an image file from the Boot Camp to an image file to your desktop.
7. Run Disk Utility and select your external drive, Choose the Partition tab, click the + below the main (only partition), select the space between the now two partitions and drag upp or down until lower parts size is at least a tad bigger than the original Boot Camp volume or bigger. Select the new partition and rename it and choose to format it to MS-DOS FAT. Execute.
8. Run WinClone again and choose your new image-file, and target your new FAT-partition on the external drive.
9. Reboot the Mac, and when screen goes black, press and hold the alt-button until the startup drives is shown, select the new Windows disk on your external drive. If all ok your computer will start on Windows on your external drive. When running Windows goto your USB-stick open the Boot Camp folder and run the setup.exe.
When all seems to work ok reboot again and this time to your internal Mac OS.
10. When in your internal Mac OS, run the Boot Camp app again and make sure only the Remove Win8xx is checked, run and the Boot Camp will be removed on your Mac drive.
Check-run everything agan.
Thats how I did it, might be easier way but at least I’m a happy camper now :-)
So now I have the options to run Mac OS on my internal drive, run Mac OS on my external together with Parallels Desktop and Windows 8.1 in a virtual or just run Windows only on the external drive (best for gaming etc in windows) -
Upgrading to Mac OS X lion - problems having a bootcamp partition?
I was just wondering if i should delete my bootcamp partition running windows 7 before i install Mac OS X Lion?
Btw, the format of the partition is NTFS (if this is at all relavent). No just leave it. It's unaffected by the lion update. if you edited your Bootcamp partition afterwards look at http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4649
Do make sure that your Mac disk is error free (run disk utility) and that you have > 15gb free.
