Mac 10.6 won't sleep for anything

I have a mac 10.6.8 that recently stopped going to sleep. When the screen is down it is still awake and the optical drive is making random noises. Could really use the help thanks.

There are many things that can cause this.
Some things to check:
OS X: When your Mac doesn't sleep or wake
Mac OS X: Why your Mac might not sleep or stay in sleep mode

If you search "Mac won't stay asleep" online you will find many things.
Hope this helps

  • Mac Mini REALLY won't sleep

OK, I have an Intel Mac Mini that really, REALLY won't sleep. When I try to sleep it, the heartbeat light on the front pulses, but I don't think the Mini is asleep, in that the external drives don't spin down (or they do spin down and then spin right back up again), and it wakes up too quickly. Also, when I try to use "Safe Sleep" ("pmset -a hibernatemode 1", or the Deep Sleep widget), the Mini doesn't deep sleep; it fakes normal sleep just like above (this used to work). I have tried all of the following:
    1) Disconnecting all but a mouse and sleeping. Tried two different mice.
    2) Resetting the SMU (15 minute unplug) and the NVRAM (CMD-OPT-P-R)
    3) Booting from an external drive with a copy of a different Mini. Unmounted everything but the external drive first.
Is there anything else I should try?
Though I don't think it's relevant (due to point 3 above), the Mini has an internal drive with 2 partitions (a large Mac OS X partition in a RAID 1 with an external miniStack, and a small blank Boot Camp partition for a future XP install) and a miniStack with three partitions (the RAID mirror, a static backup, and a simple storage space). The hardware shouldn't be relevant due to point 2 above, but is a Ministack, a Logitech Marble Mouse, a Kenginston Orbit, an Apple Keyboard, a Dell 19" monitor with USB hub, a Griffin iMic, a Canon MP760, and an iSight.

Try downloading a copy of OnyX from
    versiontracker.com...I find it solves almost
everything as it runs high level UNIX maintenance
scripts, such as Cron job, clearing kernel caches,
    repairing permissions, etc.
Otherwise I'd try reset the PRAM by holding
    Option-Cmd P, R at startup.
I had already tried Cmd-Opt-P-R. Disassembling the RAID and running MainMenu (similar to OnyX) fixed the problem. Seems the partition table may have been goobered somehow, because after I disassembled the RAID, Boot Camp wouldn't touch the drive (even though it supposedly had just an OSX partition and a Windows partition at that point).

  • IMac Shuts Down and Won't Restart for ANYTHING!

I'm unsure if this is the right place, but our iMac just crashed for the second time. Here are some details:
    1. It's happened before, but it was easily corrected when we switched power outlets. And even then the old outlet worked afterwards.
    2. I've looked all over for help, but all I keep seeing is reports of the same thing - which is highly annoying.
    3. I've tried all the soulutions I've seen:
~Shut down for 20 seconds, remove power cord, plug back in, turn on (didn't work), hold D.
~Take out RAM modules and put back in
I got a response from the latter "solution", but it didn't go past the start up whir, but not the start up sound.
It's not turning on for anything, what the heck do I do now?!

And those were the details on our actual Mac.

This is the formal procedure for doing an SMC reset (disconnecting from power and reconnecting)
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
so be sure you followed it precisely, instead of just unplugging it. Also, while doing this procedure, you should disconnect ALL cables. If you have been using a crowded or old power strip, connect it directly to the wall outlet, at least initially for this test. Power it up with nothing connected except for the power cord. If it starts up properly, connect just your keyboard/mouse and use it that way for a while. If the iMac is working properly at this point, you should also reset PRAM
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1379
If all is well, add you peripheral devices back, one at a time if possible. If the problem recurs at some point, note which device was added last. USB and FireWire devices can become defective, or otherwise interfere with sleep, wake, startup, and shutdown.
If the problem still occurs, even after the SMC reset when you power up with nothing connected (except the power cord) or when you are using it with ONLY your keyboard/mouse connected, you should have it looked at by a technician at an Apple Store or Apple-certified repair shop. If you got it January 2009, it is still under the one-year warranty.

  • When I'm on a Skype, Mac Air display won't sleep?

I think its hurting my display for keeping a long time on.
    What's the problem?

I've already unchecked "Wake for Wi-Fi Network Access" but its not working...
but the problem has just happened after I upgraded my OS...
I wont end it... because we r in different time zone so he would like to keep it connected when he's sleeping....

  • Mac Mini either won't sleep or continually wakes up from sleep

Well, I think I've tried everything...
My mini won't sleep on it's own through energy saver. I can force it to sleep by choosing it in the apple menu - and it will stay asleep. And it will go to sleep through the schedule. I installed "Please Sleep" which forces the mini to sleep but it wakes up 10 seconds later. The monitor sleep works fine.
I unplugged all USB devices - still didn't work.
So it must be a rogue process or something? Is there a way to know which one is forcing the Mac to stay awake? Or any other suggestions?

If you haven't already, try resetting the SMC per this link: Intel-based iMac, Intel-based Mac mini: How to reset the System Management Controller

  • Spotlight is not indexing my hard drive? Mail won't search for anything.

Ok, So I tried the command prompt: "sudo mdutil -E /" and it just tells me that indexing is disabled. I've tried everything I can think of. Any ideas? I can't find a way for spotlight to re-index my hard drive. Also, when I search for anything in mail, nothing will come up. And I have it set to search for everything. Any ideas with that? Help with either problem would be appreciated! thanks.

  • 2010 mac mini server won't sleep

    Hi ,
I have seen some people report that there mac mini server running Snow Leopard will not sleep .
I have had this issue for a while and have now installed an App called ' PleaseSleep ' . All seems good and my Mac now goes to sleep so I thought I would let  you all know
    Best
    AMS

I was doing some consulting for a client who had Snow Leopard Server on a Mac Mini 2010.  By nature a server is not supposed to go to sleep.  They wanted the same functionality, which I ended up scripting but looks like PleaseSleep is a better option.
I've searched and saw a lot of people complain about this.  Most ended up getting Snow leopard instead of Server which solved their problems.  Good find!

  • Mac Mini Mavericks won't sleep. Why

Processor  2.6 GHz Intel Core i7
    OS X 10.9.5 (13F34)
Mini will not sleep either with command from Apple Menu nor opt/com Upper right arrow combo
Energy Saver Settings on 10 minute default

Test after each of the following steps that you haven’t already tried:
    Step 1
Take all the steps suggested in this support article. That's the starting point for any further effort to solve the problem. Skipping any of those steps may mean that the problem won't be solved. Note that, as stated in the article, the computer will not sleep if some sharing services are enabled.
    Step 2
    From the menu bar, select
 ▹ System Preferences ▹ Accessibility ▹ Speakable Items: Off
    Step 3
    Select
               ▹ System Preferences ▹ Bluetooth ▹ Advanced...
    and uncheck both boxes marked
Open Bluetooth Setup Assistant at startup if...
    Step 4
Disconnect all wired peripherals and test. If you use a wired keyboard and/or mouse, use different ones. You must rule out the wired keyboard and mouse as possible causes of the problem.
    Step 5
    Reset the SMC.
    Step 6
Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you turn on the computer, and again when you log in.
Note: If FileVault is enabled in OS X 10.9 or earlier, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Safe mode is much slower to start and run than normal. Don’t launch any applications at first. If sleep still doesn’t work properly, back up all data and reinstall the OS. After that, if you still have the issue, make a “Genius” appointment at an Apple Store to have the machine tested.
If sleep now works as expected, go on to the next step.
    Step 7
Still in safe mode, launch the usual set of applications that are running when you have the problem, including your login items, one at a time, testing after each one. Some applications may not work; skip them. You might be able to identify the cause of the problem this way.
    Step 8
If sleep is still working after you’ve launched all the usual applications, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and test again. If sleep still works, you’re done, at least for the moment.
If you still have the sleep issue after restarting out of safe mode, post again.

  • Can an Early 2009 Mac Pro utilize dual 7950 GPUs for anything?

I have decided to beed up my aging Mac Pro instead of spending the serious coin for a new Mac Pro.  I am installing 64GB of RAM and a 1TB SSD.  The video card does funny things from time to time, so I will also be upgrading to a Sapphire 7950.  Does it do anything for me to install a second 7950?  Does the Mac Pro use dual GPUs?
If it can utilize them, where will I see the most benefit and what do I need to do (hardware/software) to get the most out of it?

Best to get one gpu with two 6-pin cables for power. Beyond that you get into hooking up an additional PSU such as a 450W with 4 power connectors and the mess that all creates.
No benefit for the most part. Not that it hasn't been tried and tested.

  • Did the requested upgrade and now iTunes won't open for anything

I upgraded to the newest version and now iTunes wont open, no error message, nothing. It looks as if it's going to launch when I click on it but nothing happens. This Happened last time I upgraded but it worked itself out after a few mins but this has been all day... nothing is working.
I tried to plug my iPod in and not even that will launch iTunes.
In a similar topic it was asked if QuickTime would launch, my QuickTime will open but it has been loading for 2hrs now.... WHATS GOING ON?!!???

Me too... The other post relating to this was with a PC but the same is happening for macs too by the look of it. Has anyone got an idea of how to sort this out? I don't suppose it's possible to find an earlier version of iTunes to download? I'm going to have a search now cos I need iTunes to be working!

  • Mac 21.5 won't sleep, comes back on.

I click sleep on the apple menu, the screen goes black, then about 10 seconds later it wakes up again.  The display stays on, and doesn't go to sleep automatically either.

  • MacBook Pro won't sleep for more than a few seconds

For a few months now my late '08 MBP has been intermittently refusing to sleep. When I close the lid, the system will power down to sleep mode, the Apple on the top goes out and the power light will fade off and on as expected. But after a few seconds, the cd drive whirrs and the system powers up again and I have to choose Apple Menu > Sleep, because closing the lid doesn't work.
It's an intermittent issue: sometimes it'll sleep first time, other times it needs to be told to sleep from the Apple menu three or four times to persuade it to get some rest.
I've tried the usual suspects: Turning off Bluetooth, PRAM, SMC...anyone else have this problem?

Certain settings, e.g. printer sharing, can prevent sleep. There are other possibilities as well. See this kbase article:

  • Panther G4 AGP won't boot for anything!

At our school we have 10 G4 macs. One was working, but as of July it has been dead. For some reason the grey apple at bootup sits forever. It was running panther. I tried to boot off a panther CD and no go. Only a OS 9.1 disk will boot, but after showing the smiling face, the load bar freezes before any extensions load. And it sits there forever. Below is everything I have tried only to still get a frozen OS 9.1 screen and a no boot all black screen in Panther.
    1. remove system drive and replace with newer drive to rebuild the computer - no go
    2. removed the slave - no go
    3. removed all the RAM and replaced with newer - no go
    4. held apple-s at bootup on panther - no go, froze after first four lines
    5. held shift during OS 9 boot from CD to cut off extensions-no go, still froze
    6. removed all pci cards except vga-no go
    7. continued replacing RAM and rearranging RAM-no go
    8. reset the PMU switch - no go
    9. took out the CD drive and replaced with newer drive-no go

Hmm. It's a long shot, but since you've tried so many other things, how about checking for heat? Blow the ducts out, and run with the case open.
    Best,

  • Close lid, but MBP won't sleep for ten seconds or more.

Is this a new "feature?" When I close the lid of my iBook, my white light starts pulsing in about two or three seconds. When I do the same thing with my MBP, it takes at least ten seconds to pulse, indicating sleep.
    Any info on this phenomenon?
    Thanks!

RAM contents are now written to disk when you put the machine to sleep. So if your machine loses power or is shutdown when sleeping, the system can still be restored to its prior state.
So the delay you see when putting your machine to sleep is likely from memory contents being written to disk. I see a similar delay for a couple seconds on my MBP. I'm not sure if there is a way to circumvent this safety feature. There's more info here:

  • My Mac shuts down, won't sleep

My Macbook no longer sleeps. When I close the cover the sleep light goes out and it turns off completely. It also asks me 'do you want to shut down' all the time. I tried an SMC update but I received the message, this computer does not need this update', or something to that effect. Any fixes out there? Thanks

Forgot to add that there are no problems with the battery. It charges and function fine. Thanks.
