Mac 10.8.4 - OES11 Cluster volume migration

I am posting this question as we are trying to implement the 'same' features we are used to with Windows.
The kanaka client 2.8 & server are configured and have the clustering resources set to the same vol-name as in the documentation
Now some questions:
1) when a cluster resource moves - the kanaka client loses connectivity - is there a way to have it auto reconnect as windows clients do?
2) When Word is open and editing a document on a network volume - The network volume is migrated - Word crashes and loses the contents
Is there a timeout for reconnecting? I see a timeout for logging in and the default is 60 seconds.
what are some of the best solutions for what I am asking ?
Thanks in advance
Joe

Some further info
In our testing without cluster migration we have noticed that volumes have been dropped.
When the Macs went to sleep (for about 15 minutes) - all the volumes were present.
When they were asleep for longer - some volumes dropped but not all ?

  • Migrate from server core 2008 r2 hyper-v with failover cluster volumes to server core 2012 r2 hyper-v with failover cluster volumes on new san hardware

We are getting ready to migrate from server core 2008 r2 hyper-v with failover cluster volumes on an iscsi san to server core 2012 r2 hyper-v with failover cluster volumes on a new iscsi san.
I've been searching for a "best practices" article for this but have been coming up short.  The information I have found either pertains to migrating from 2008 r2 to 2012 r2 with failover cluster volumes on the same hardware, or migrating
to different hardware without failover cluster volumes.
If there is anyone out there that has completed a similar migration, it would be great to hear any feedback you may have on your experiences.
Currently, my approach is as follows:
    1. Configure new hyper-v with failover cluster volumes on new SAN with new 2012 r2 hostnodes and 2012 r2 management server
    2. Turn off the virtual machines on old 2008 r2 hyper-v hostnodes
    3. Stop the VMMS service on the 2008 r2 hostnodes
    4. copy the virtual machine files and folders over to the new failover cluster volumes
    5. Import vm's into server 2012 r2 hyper-v.
Any feedback on the opertain I have in mind would be helpful.
    Thank you,
    Rob

    Hi Rob,
Yes , I agree with that "file copy " can achieve migration.
Also you can try "copy cluster wizard " :

  • DHCP on OES11 Cluster

    Hello,
I have some problems to get DHCP Service running in a Cluster Evironment (OES11 SP1, NSS Volume). The Ressource is up and running, but the DHCP Service wont load.
LDAPS session successfully enabled to 10.0.181.36:636
Error: Cannot find LDAP entry matching (&(objectClass=dhcpServer)(cn=DHCP_CLUSTER-DNSDHCP-SERVER))
Configuration file errors encountered -- exiting
The standard command rcnovell-dhcp start did work. So it looks like the rights or seomthing else is missing on the cluster volume /media/nssDHCP...
Maybe I am misunderstanding the doc as well. It states in the DHCP Linux Guide:
8.3.3. hot wo use a different user - it states that it would use the dhcpd user , but no such user was created. Do I need to create it manually?
    Thanks for your help!

    Hi,
If I recall correctly from my setup, I had to create a user and LUM enable it, and match the UID to the local account.
    See here: http://www.novell.com/documentation/...a/bbe81cc.html
Let us know how it goes.

  • Upgrade OES2 to OES11 Cluster

    Hi all,
we plan to upgrade our 2-node Cluster running on OES2SP3 x64 to current
version running on OES11SP1. The cluster provides GroupWise, File and iPrint
Services and is connected via QLogic iSCSI HBA to our SAN.
What would you recommend how the Upgrade could be done without major
    trouble?

There should be no trouble at all. Move all ressources to one Node, then
update the free node to OES11 as documented, move ressources to the
upgraded server, test, then do the same with the other node. But I
suggest use SP2 instead of SP1. There's really not much special on a
cluster node vs a "normal" server.
One thing you may need to check into is iPrint. If it's fully clustered,
your weg data of iPrint will reside on a clustered volume, which however
will never be available on the node that's currently upgraded, so you
likely end up with the old iPrint stuff there. Yuo may want to re-run
the iprint cluster setup script again (or if you feel able to, copy the
local iPrint data over to the cluster volume).

Thanks -- I would like to try this. I do not know how to reach hard drive from old mac to new. Can you help me with this?
There are two ways - you can boot your old Mac in Target Mode (reboot your Mac, and as soon as you hear the startup chime hold down the T key on the keyboard until you see the yellow/orange Firewire logo on screen).  You can then use a FireWire cable to connect your new mac to your old one.  The old Mac hard drive will appear on your new Mac as if it is an external hard drive.
Details on Target Disk Mode:  http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1661
If you don't have a firewire cable but you do have a home network (i.e. both computers can access the Internet at the same time), you can share the hard drive on your old Mac and then connect to it on your new Mac.
Good article on sharing your hard drive:  http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1549
Finally, if the above doesn't thrill you, you can hook an external drive to your old Mac, copy the mail folder over to it, then connect the external drive to your new Mac and copy it over.  It's two steps, but if you don't have a firewire cable and aren't comfortable with sharing over a network it will work just as well - you just have to wait for the mail folder to copy twice instead of once.
If you get stuck post back!

  • 10.5.8 update_'You cannot install Mac OS X Update on this volume.'

You cannot install Mac OS X Update on this volume. This volume does not meet the requirements for this update.
This is the message I get when I click on the hard drive I wan to install it on, I have two hard drives, neither want to work with it. the one with the osx 10.5 has 63 gb left and the empty one has 102gb left. Why is it doing this/ what should I do?

If you're not using the combo updater, use it instead.

  • Manage OES11 Cluster Services

    Hello to all!
    I've just a "big" problem. I have to manage 3 OES-Cluster Nodes. 2 2-Node-Clusters on OES 2 SP3 and 1 4-Node-Cluster on OES 11. The master - where the iManager is installed - is an OES 2 SP3, too.
When I start the iManager, it's no problem to manage everything on the OES 2-Clusters. If I choose the OES 11-Cluster, I'll get errors and the iManager stops working (the frontend).
I've searched the internet for information; so I can say, it's not the TID with the sysctl-settings.
    Does anyone have any idea?

Use iManager on one of the OES11 servers to manage the OES11 cluster? (I'm just saying to try that).
I don't know off the top of my head if the OES11 iMan/cluster stuff can manage both cluster versions. I believe OES11 does not use cimom to manage clustering anymore (sfbcd or something like that now?)

  • "You cannot install Mac OS X Update on this volume."

"You cannot install Mac OS X Update on this volume. This volume does not meet the requirements for this update."
This is the error I got when I tried to update my Macbook from OSX 10.5.6 to 10.5.7.
    I downloaded this file (http://support.apple.com/kb/DL826)
A quick Google search suggested I get this one instead (http://support.apple.com/kb/DL827) The "Combo" update.
Well, the 10.5.7 Combo Installer didn't help either.
My friend suggested I try 10.5.8
    Same error message again.
I really need to get at least 10.5.7 for software ASAP. I plan on getting Snow Leopard next month or so, but I really need at least 10.5.7 in the meantime. Any ideas?

    Some things I've tried:
    - I ran a Verify Disk in Disk Utility, and it said there are no problems.
    - Update Logs haven't shown any errors, nor has my computer ever tried to download the update and failed, according to the log.
    - I tried checking updates on a different account, no luck there.
So far, that's all I've tried. Some of the other solutions seem more drastic, and so I'll leave those up to the skilled Tech Support guys on my campus, I've got an appointment tomorrow.

  • Mounting NSS Cluster Volumes on other Linux Nodes

    Hi,
have anyone experience how to mount OES NSS Cluster Volumes on other
    Linux Servers (SLES/RedHat/Centos)?
Traditional i would say i have to use NFS, but did this run fine on OES
    Cluster Volumes?
How must i do this here, what are the recommend mount options?
Documentation say do it "native to Linux"???
    hmm, how?
How should i write the /etc/exports file on OES Cluster Nodes(should
these look same on all Cluster Nodes)?
What happen on Resource Failover, should nfsd restarted?
    Have anyone running this?
    Regards
    Thomas

Since you're using NSS in a clustered setup, I am assuming you're using just NCP?
I'm not sure if the ncpmount or the NCL (Novell Client for Linux) work on anything other than the Suse platforms (you mentioned RHEL and CentOS).
Otherwise you MAY be able to also run CIFS to "publish" the NSS volume and then you should be able to use native SMB connection methods to connect from the other linux OS's.
I would probably avoid NFS only because it has no concept of file locking (or at least doesn't seem to care) and may happily overwrite a file that's in use by someone with NCP access.

  • OES2 to OES11 (upgrade or migrate?)

GW 2012 happily working on OES 2 SP3
Obviously there is a need to upgrade to OES 11
What is easier, upgrade with bootable media or migration?
If migration how does one move GW stuff to new server?

No, no update to the GW SP1 code is needed, you are already running 2012 code. So there are no upgrade steps here for GroupWise, just a move.

Yes, that's about it.... but also, in my setups the OES2 OS disk is a separate disk from the data disk.
After first removing the original OES2 from the tree, the OES11 disk gets attached and set as first boot disk, if the OES2 OS disk is seperate... I leave it out of the new configuration.
Then start the OES11 server - which has all the needed elements but has not been configured yet (in other words: has not been added to the tree), set server name and ip equal to the one used for the OES2 server and configure eDir and NSS services. (I always first configure eDir and NSS services... make sure that's working, and then add any other OES services... *if needed*).
As the GroupWise install stuff and agents are already in there, all that is needed is to copy the GroupWise data to a new volume (or reuse the original volume, which saves the time needed to copy over the files), reconfigure the agents as needed and start them up.
Path changes on the Linux server (like when moving the GroupWise data from an ext3 mounted partition to an NSS volume, which by default has it's mount in /media/nss/..), that can easily be handled by using a symlink (symbolic link) to have the old "path" point to the new one on the NSS volume (e.g. #ln -a [/oldpath] [/media/nss/[NSS volume]/newpath]).
This is usually not needed, as you will be supplying the new agent dib paths during configuration of them anyway. It can ease things though when old paths are causing issues with some bits.
Hope that clarifies a little more.
    Cheers,
    Willem

  • Why are the files I migrated over from a backup hard drive locked and inaccessible on my new used Mac Book pro? I used the migration assistant. Running Snow Leopard on a core duo.

My laptop got pinched and I bought a used Mac Book Pro, put a larger hard drive in it and performed a clean install of Snow Leopard on the new drive, after which I used the Migration Assistant to bring over my applications, settings, documents, etc., from my backup hard drive. This hard drivekis not a Ti e Machine drive, it's one I use to clone my computer to regularly with Carbon Copy Cloner. When the migration was complete all my documents, the desktop, and other folders are locked and won't allow me to access them. What to do? Thanks for the help.

    Graham Giles wrote:
Have you seen this type of problem before? I think it could be a serious issue for anyone in a similar position.
No; but then, I've not had occasion to use TDM. I've been using firerwire drives for over 10 years, both FW400 and FW800, with no issues except a bit of instability using a B&W G3 machine.
TDM should be safe. Using cautious, manual copying of files from the Target machine to the Host machine should not result in unexpected loss of files or damage to the Target drive's directories. It should behave exactly the same as if it were an external (to the Host) firewire drive.
    •  I don't suppose there is anything I can do to 'put back' lost items from a separate Time Machine drive which has an up to date backup on it.
There is probably a way to do that - seems to me that's one of the reasons for a Time Machine volume.
On the other hand, if the Time Machine volume is rigidly linked to the now-absent OS on the original drive, there may be no way to effectively access the files in the TM archive.
I know that using a cloned drive would work well in this instance.
I have no experience with Time Machine, so perhaps someone who has will chime in with suggestions.
With the machine in TDM with the other machine, have you tried running Disk Utility to see if you can effect repairs to the drive?

  • Mac Pro will not find boot volume

    Hello,
My Mac Pro will not find it's boot volume. Each time the computer is started, the blinking folder with the question mark is the result. A working install of 10.7 does exist on the machine's primary hard drive. If  I were to press the option key on boot, I can select the primary hard drive (after entering the password) and everything boots as normal. I have run TechToolPro on the volume with no detected errors, even after a volume rebuild. A Recovery HD partition is not on the boot volume. Should that matter?
I really really do not want to reinstall Mac OS X. I have hundreds of gigabytes of data in question. Any reinstall/reconfig would take days to complete.
    Thanks

So you are saying that setting the default in Startup Disk doesn't work?
And you have not got or been using Carbon Copy Cloner or another to provide working bootable backup?
You should have Lion Recovery on one of your drives, do a clean install.,
I assume TTPro media scan turns up no errors.
MOVE all your data OFF the boot drive. Keep the system OS and apps on its own drive.
Clone the system. Use TimeMachine and cloning for backup.
And how is the pram battery?
Any time you zap pram you lose the default and it will look for it like you see starting with SATA0 (bay 1)
