MAC 2011 email attachments converted to winmail.dat

Hello Guys,
Does anyone encountered the same when MAC 2011 receives email with attachments the attachment becomes winmail.dat? What are things might causing it in the server level. Please advice.
NOTE: This is not affecting only one user but.
Thanks!
Uddan

Hi,
The Winmail.dat file is used to preserve Rich Text formatting. Outlook uses it when sending a Rich Text-formatted message. During transport, the content of the message may be changed, preventing the receiving client from being able to read the formatting
instructions. In other cases, the receiving client does not use or recognize the winmail.dat file.

  • Email attachments saving as winmail.dat

All attachments in my In-Box will only save as winmail.dat files. This includes attachments previously successfully saved as e.g..xls, .doc and from a variety of sources e.g. Outlook & web-based email using plain text & RTF.
Equally all attachments are now being sent as winmail.dat
    Has something changed ?

Upgrading my work PC is NOT an option, but I'd like my Mac to be able to recognise the attachment for what it is
Let see, you are using a proprietary file format that is only supposed to work with Outlook. It doesn't work for millions of Windows or Mac or Linux email users that depend on other email programs like Outlook Express, Thunderbird, Apple Mail, webmail, etc.
Microsoft has had to publish instructions so that their program's users can make themselves compatible with the rest of the world.
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/290809
You are causing your own problem by not making a simple change in your program's options. Changes in the Outlook preferences can be made either Globally or by the Recipient.
Follow these steps in Outlook 2007 to turn off TNEF:
    1. On the Tools menu, click Options.
    2. Click the Mail Format tab.
    3. In the Compose in this message format box, click Plain Text or HTML, and then click OK.
Don't know of a better way to fix this problem for everyone concerned. Even if you get the fix to work with your machine, you will not enable all of the people receiving your emails to be able to work with you. That's a losing battle that's been caused by Microsoft.
Now if Microsoft created a Mail plugin for other email programs like they do for their video format's and services (flip4mac, Office Live Plugin, etc), then I would consider using their email program to deal with my clients. Until then, I need to be compatible with many different programs in other countries, on different platforms. Maybe that's going to change when they bring out the new Office 2011 with Outlook for the Mac...

  • Email attachments coming as winmail.dat - how to sort this out permanently?

Since I upgraded to Office 2007 at work, any email received from there that has an attachment is named winmail.dat and will not open. Upgrading my work PC is NOT an option, but I'd like my Mac to be able to recognise the attachment for what it is, either a pdf, or a xls or doc file etc.

  • Why are mail attachments winmail.dat?

Why are the attachments on my emails coming through as winmail.dat now?  Even Word (.doc) and photos (.jpg) attachments come through as winmail.dat on my macbook, ipad and iphone.

Did they come from someone using Windows?

  • Problem with winmail.dat Attachments in our company

First, i did read all Entries in this Community about winmail.dat, but there's no entry for my problem.
We use exchange server 2010 and outlook 2010. All Mails are written as HTML-Mails. There's no RTF Mails in our company.
The problem ist, our cio ist using a ipad with a hotmail mal address and most mails with attachments arrives as winmail.dat on the ipad.
    But not all!
I could verify, that a Mail with doc, pdf, xls attachments was opened ok on a iphone4s (with ios6) but showed as winmail.dat on ipad3 (ios6) at the same time!
Has anyone a explanation to this?

Winmail.dat files are attachments sent by Microsoft mail applications (Outlook, Outlook Express or Exchange) on a proprietary RTF format called TNEF (transport neutral encapsulation format).
An e-mail containing an winmail.dat attachment looks like an empty e-mail with only one attachment. The original e-mail information like subject, body and attachments is packed into a single winmail.dat file, which in some cases also receives a generic name like information01.dat.
If you wanna open it, you should download a winmail viewer.
    Hope this help u!

  • How do you convert win mail.dat files back to MS office files?

Microsoft files (e.g. excel) when forwarded as attachments and received by MacBook Winmail, get converted to winmail.dat files.  However, MS Office products cannot open these winmail.dat files.  Does anyone have a solution for this "bug"?

The fault lies with Microsoft Outlook, the email client you are using on your PC. The Winmail.dat file is used to preserve Rich Text formatting. Outlook uses it when sending a Rich Text-formatted message. During transport, the content of the message may be changed, preventing the receiving client from being able to read the formatting instructions. In other cases, the receiving client does not use or recognize the winmail.dat file.
The data in a winmail.dat file is not usable (without conversion see below). To resolve this issue within Outlook, send the messages in plain text format.  You can change the format of the email messages that you send from Outlook by using the following steps:
On the Tools menu, click Options, and then click Mail Format.
In Compose in this message format, click to select Plain Text, and then click OK.
Did I mention that I detest Outlook. It's not your fault. The gentlemen idiots at Microsoft make the egregious assumption that all your recipients all use Outlook, and don't adequately inform users that they have to change settings to communicate with the rest of the world.
You can also use TNEF "enough" (which is easier than getting your senders to behave LOL)

  • .PDF coming in as Winmail.DAT

Anyone know why all of a sudden friends sending me PDF's get converted to WINMAIL.DAT.  I can't open them, what can I check?

Mac OS X Mail: What is a winmail.dat attachment?
The attachment means the email was sent from a Microsoft email application (such as Outlook and the Microsoft Exchange Client) and includes rich text information--how fonts, colors and specialized attributes such as underlining or boldface should appear in the email (the attachment doesn't appear in Outlook but does appear in Mail; it may appear in other email applications as a MIME section named "application/ms-tnef")
    Avoiding these attachments
To avoid seeing these attachments in the future, you ask the sender to deselect the email's "Send to this recipient in Microsoft rich text format" checkbox or preference setting in mail client before they send the message.

  • TS3276 why is jpeg file lost and replaced with winmail.dat file in mail

I sent a jpeg file to my hotmail account, which is synchronised in my Mac Mail but the file was lost/converted to winmail.dat attachment, which I couldn't import to iPhoto. How do I import a jpeg image, emailed to me from an external source, to iPhoto?

I think you need to configure Outlook in Windows to use HTML messages.
Here is Microsoft's incomprehensible support document on the issue.

  • Word: Mac 2011 to PDF problems

Hi, I am preparing a dissertation in Word: Mac 2011 and must convert the file to a PDF for my submission process.  When I save the document as a PDF, the result is multiple PDFs, which is okay as I know how to recombine them; however, the top or left margins on a few tables and pages between the tables do not hold.  I have tried making sure that paper handling and scale options are not the issue.  I have also reviewed this help document but the links do not seem to work.  Please help!

This is an old problem that has plagued PDF's created from Word Documents since PDF has existed.
If you have any Page or Section Breaks, and also if any of the section breaks contain switches in Page Orientation its a given that it will happen.
MS has got so tired at Adobe dragging its feet fixing this problem that they added a PDF converter that does cure Page break problems and make cure section break problems  except when page is switched from Portrait to Landscape orientation. It debuted in Office 2008. But has since been incorporated in Office 2004 through updates. They installed a direct word to PDF Converter. Simply, go to SAVE AS... from the file menu. Scroll down list of conversion type. until you see PDF. Choose PDF and it "should"  create your document just fine.
This is one case where Adobe nor Microsoft want to admit to a bug. Its kind of like the old chex cereal Commercial. "I don't like, you eat it. NO I don't like it You eat it. Instead of fixing the problem they've let it go on close to 20 years now. Adobe swears up and down that if they could just could figure out Word and excel Page and Orientation Code for Section and page Breaks.
Microsoft has come up with there own Converter for PDF  In Office 2008 you go to Save As... and from scroll list choose PDF. Its also been introduced in 2004 in some updates. Even it may not solve the issue if you have section breaks with Page orientation changes (from Portrait to Landscape)
If you can't or won't update do the Following:
    open first part of PDF
    go to Documents Menu
Select insert Page scroll to end of document then choose insert at end of page. choose the desired PDF into insert.
Repeat the above with the thrid part.
This is easy, with just your 3 page document. But gets old fast, if you have a 500 page Document with lots of page or section breaks.

  • Outlook + TNEF, the reverse problem: outlook doesn't understand winmail.dat

A lot of information can be found about people with other mail clients not being able to read TNEF encoded (winmail.dat) messages, but I am having the opposite problem: *Outlook* can not read them anymore in our organization.
Mail servers are all Exchange 2010, Outlook versions 2010 and 2013.
Internal mails in TNEF/RTF format are fine.
In external mails coming in from the internet, if they arrive in TNEF, Outlook shows the plain ASCII text and the winmail.dat attachment.
The only thing I can find that may cause it, is a header inserted into the mail by our firewall. Now my question is, can that really be the reason?
Example snippet from an incoming mail with winmail.dat attachment, the "X-Watchguard-Antivirus" header is what I'm talking about.
    --_000_B083931C9A44A84C8FF71C48801A6D5FACE1D820SRVMAIL1KSCCJHL_
    Content-Dis; filename="winmail.dat"
    Content-Transfer-Encoding: base64
    Content-Type: application/ms-tnef; name="winmail.dat"
    X-WatchGuard-AntiVirus: scanned 'winmail.dat'. clean action=allow
    eJ8+IgAkAQaQCAAEAAAAAAABAAEAAQeQBgAIAAAA5AQAAAAAAADoAAEJgAEAIQAAAEEzQUExN0Y4
    NDMwOEU3NDdCNkMxMzIyODkzRTRBRTg1ACUHAQ2ABAACAAAAAgACAAEFgAMADgAAAN8HAQAOAA0A
The "Content-disposition" line somehow got mangled when I quoted it above, the real line reads correctly "Content-Disposition colon attachment semicolon filename=...".

    Hi,
The common reason that recipients receive emails as winmail.dat is that they are not using Outlook/Exchange, their email clients can't decipher the RTF/TNEF format thus the email is shown as winmail.dat.
In your scenario, you are using Outlook and Exchange, you should receive RTF emails correctly - It's proved with the Internal emails.
I can't be sure whether it's caused by the firewall, but if all external emails are facing this issue, it's most likely caused by the firewall.
To verify this, is it possible for you to configure the firewall not to insert the header? If it makes a difference to external emails that they can be read then, we can conclude the firewall was the culprit.

  • How can I get Mac mail to open winmail.dat attachments on lion 10.7.3

How can I get Mac mail to open letter attachments winmail.dat??   (Lion 10.7.3) Any help appreciated...

    Sorry peterskine,
it's true in part. There's more then one article on the subject "Recipients receive a winmail.dat attachment":
    http://office.microsoft.com/en-gb/outlook-help/recipients-receive-a-winmail-dat- attachment-HA010153018.aspx?CTT=1
The odd thing is that my colleague and me use the same release mountain lion and we received the same email from someone on Outlook2007. He received the mail with the attachment, whilst I saw a "Winmail.dat". It already happened to me on snow-leopard, some month ago. Up til today I don't know what the difference between our machines is.
But it is interesting: the same OS, the same mail-clients (Apple Mail) and still different results.
Note: on my machine it used to work properly. It just suddenly happened that I started to receive winmail.dat files in stead of proper attachments.
When I have more time on hand, I cant try to find out why this happens.

my N95-8Gb sometimes receive unrecocognisable email attachments (WINMAIL.DAT). I can read maybe 1st line of the email msg but unable to view anymore than this. From what I can gather is that msgs seem to be in a format that my n95-8Gb cannot decipher and it just renames the file.
As I read I generally read all my emails in the html, this is very frustrating....
