.Mac account to encrypt Mail messages

If you look at this posting, you can use your .Mac certificate for your Mail program. The readers of this message posted possitive results to this hint. I however do not have the erncyption and digital signing boxes as described. Any suggestions?
http://www.macosxhints.com/article.php?story=20051121134558157

There are two systems of encryption/signing in widespread use:
One is PGP/GPG, with plug-ins as above.
The other is X.509.
They both offer (at least part of) the same algorithms, but packaged differently.
Now .Mac uses X.509, and this is integrated into Mail. But you can get X.509 certificates from a number of companies, often for free (Thawte is one of them , SwissSign over here too etc). You need the proper certificates in Keychain access, often Mail will do that for you. If the root certificate for a certificate is not yet in the trusted database, it needs to be imported into the X509 keychain (option when double clicking the file in Mac OS X).
I still have trouble as have others to get those certificates working in Mail (the are deemed valid by Keychain access). The checkboxes to encrypt and sign just do not show up in Mail even if the certificates (keys) are available in Keychain access for the very e-mail addresses I want to sent something. Strange - but then my Powerbook is currently in repair because of a hard disk problem.
PGP/GPG works similarly but needs to be installed. GPGMail is a nice plug in for Mail. Many people use it. See http://www.sente.ch/software/GPGMail/English.lproj/GPGMail.html for it, and a link to the rest of the needed software. I got this working like a charm.

  • Spotlight Searches of Encrypted Mail Messages

    Greetings,
Is there a way to get Spotlight to search the contents of encrypted mail messages?
I have a number of messages in my Mail folders that have been signed with Digital IDs. Spotlight will not search the contents of these messages (headers and subjects seem to be ok).
I have tried checking the "Encrypted Messages" in preferences and have reindexed the Mail folder with no luck.
    Thanks.
      Mac OS X (10.4.8)

On the top of my head, I would suggest that you could search for sender, date, etc., in encrypted emails, but as the contents is encrypted, you would need to know the makeup of the encryption. For example, if you were looking for a message with the word "warning", you would have to type in the encryption, e.g., "%r^:&x$' of that word to find it. Otherwise why encrypt the contents in the first place.
If for example, Spotlight could find by contents in an encrypted message, anyone who can intercept you email would be able to read your mail.

The iCloud IMAP server “p99-imap.mail.me.com” rejected the password for user -------------
in the accounts setup it shows two accounts:
.Mac iCloud IMAP -- the one thats Off-line
    iCloud icloud IMAP -- On-line

  • "On My Mac" vs "My .Mac Account" in Apple Mail

    Hello Everyone,
Since I upgraded to Leopard this weekend, Apple Mail has been acting differently than it used to with my .Mac service.
First of all the underlying theory behind IMAP is to keep everything in sync on the server and on the local computer.
Apple Mail has created the following two different worlds in Apple Mail's Mailbox: "On My Mac" and "My .Mac Account".
The "My .Mac Account" is the account I created to setup my .Mac in Mail>Preferences>Accounts. But the "On My Mac" just popped out of nowhere in the following places:
    Trash
    On My Mac
    My .Mac Account
it has also created TWO exactly identical Mailbox folders with the following headers and subheaders in the Mailbox pane on the left:
    On My Mac
    Deleted Messages (My .Mac Account)
    Drafts (My .Mac Account)
    On My Mac
    Deleted Messages (My .Mac Account)
    Drafts (My .Mac Account)
Why it has created this in the first place and why it has created it twice nonetheless baffles me.
I find it confusing between "On My Mac" and "My .Mac Account".
It was much better before when in the previous Apple Mail on Tiger, we just had Inbox, Drafts, Sent, and Trash. Simple.
I figured out how to get rid of "On My Mac" in the Trash and the two main folders it created twice, but going into preferences>accounts>mailbox behaviors and unchecking all boxes that says to store anything on the server, including drafts, and trash items.
But by unchecking all those boxes, not everything will stay in sync between my computer and the server. If I keep them checked, I get all those "On My Mac" stuff popping up in Apple Mail.
What is there to do? Is there a way to fix this? Thank you very much!
    Nicolas

Solution: Go to the User Library and search for the Containers, Apple's newest annoying "feature". Here you find the true Mail folder. Delete everything (unless you have any POP-Accounts, then this solution won't apply). Also go to the Mail folder in User Lib Preferences and delete it entirely.
Then empty the User Caches folder to the Trash, don't empty it.
Open System Settings, delete your iCloud account. If it cannot be deleted due to an error concerning AppleMail, leave it as is.
    Restart Mac.
    Empty Trash.
Launch AppleMail. Create all accounts other than iCloud.
Create iCloud Account by NOT using the template in the dialog list - do it as "other", AppleMail will recognize it and do the rest.
Open System Settings, create your old iCloud acount again.
    Restart Mac.
    Done.

  • Why does my .mac account automatically "get mail"?

I am migrating my email from Entourage to Mail. I have a .mac account, an account from my ISP, an account from my hosting account, and several emails for a domain of which I am the webmaster and admin.
Problem is, for some strange reason I can force all my other accounts to only get mail when I manually check it. But my .mac account is delivered into my inbox for my .mac account whenever I click on that box in my Inbox list. I can see a little dial icon that tells me that Mail is checking it then my message appears in the list.
I am trying to accomplish many things as I set up my boxes and this is the first step in learning about Mail. Its more of a control issue but it is important to me.
    G4 Mirror Doors Mac OS X (10.4.8)

OK. It seems a few things need clarification here.
First of all, both POP and IMAP accounts use SMTP for sending, so there should be no difference in this regard. Also, mail accounts that allow both POP and IMAP access may very well use the same incoming mail server for both, so no surprise there either, except POP and IMAP access use different port numbers (which, in the case of Mail, you can see in Preferences > Accounts > Advanced).
I find it hard to believe that you cannot set up your .Mac account as IMAP in Entourage. In Mail, you can only choose the account type when setting up the account, and can see (but not change) it afterwards in Preferences > Accounts > Account Information > Account Type. If you see “.Mac” there, it means IMAP, the main difference between .Mac and IMAP being that Mail does more things automatically for you if it knows that it’s a .Mac account.
Doesn't look like it is possible.
Well, it’s possible if you set up your .Mac account as POP, if that’s what you want:

You do not need a .Mac account.
It works with any POP or IMAP email server.

  • Mac account on desktop mail program has been disabled

Hello, would appreciate any help. Yesterday I ran my desktop mail program and it would look like it was connecting but would have a box appear to "check the settings as it was having trouble getting mail," but then the new mail was there, so didn't think there was a problem. I ran the disc permission repair as I have to do this periodically and today when I clicked on mail in my dock only my ISP mailbox was there. When I click on Preferences it shows my Mac account as "inactive" and it is grayed out. It will not let me "enable" the account or bring it back online. If I click on "edit" to check the settings it won't let me back out because "there is no user name in place" but it won't let me add one. I must click on cancel in order to get out of that section. Is there a way to get this account back on line without removing it and then re-entering all of the information again? If I have to remove it how do I know what to put where in order to get my mail coming to my desktop again, as I am not sure if the ones on the "disable account" are correct at this point. I checked with my ISP just to make sure everything was working on their end and it is, they said it is an Apple problem and to get help from them but their recommendation was to delete the account and start over. In order for me to check my mail to get an answer, I am going to have to keep going to the Mac.com website so would appreciate a prompt reply. Thanks for any help.

    [email protected]

While trying to find a solution, I am discovering my mail problem is much deeper than just messages not appearing in the "Sent" mailbox.  I have found some of them appearing in the "Trash" mailbox and some appearing there mulitple times, often with my account name in the "TO" field.  I'm also finding some unread mail there that should be in the "Junk" mailbox.  So it would appear there are many problems with ISO 7 and mail.  I have tried deleting and restablishing the account and two complete iPhone restores.  Neither helped. What is the biggest puzzle is that on my second iPhone, the one that upgraded without an error, mail is working perfectly well.  Has anyone found a solution to any mail problems on ISO 7 devices?  If so, please reply.

  • HT2623 I forgot the password for my .mac account and cannot log into it from Apple Mail.  I have an iCloud mail account but did not convert my .mac account to iCloud.  How can I log into my .mac or .me email?

I set up .mac, including email, around 2006.  I believe my .mac account became a .me account, but I continued to receive email sent to .mac until about March 2013.
I accessed my .mac account using Apple Mail on an iMac running OS X 4.11.  I'm still using that machine.
In July 2013, I upgraded my MacBook Pro to OS X 8.5, bought an iPod Touch and set up an iCloud account.
I forgot my .mac password and I want to open an email message sent to my .mac email account.
When I attempt to log into my .mac account using Apple Mail, my password attempts are rejected by a .me mail server.
Is there any way I can restore my access to my .mac or .me email?
    Thanks,

  • Glitch getting Mail to access my .Mac account

Yesterday after I had had my powerbook on for a while, after Mail had opened on startup and automatically checked for and retrieved mail for my .mac account and a second separate account, Mail suddenly began asking me to log on. This was maybe about an hour after I'd started working. I'd been turned away from my screen for a while and when I jiggled my mouse to bring the screen on again (it was not sleeping, but the screen is set to go dark after a few minutes), there was this dialog box asking me to log on. (The second, non-.mac email account is functioning normally.)
I tried doing so but the system would not accept my password (even after trying several versions of that password). So now it's the next day and this problem hasn't solved itself... On a different machine at home last night I checked and Mail and my .mac account was functioning normally.
Here at work again I can log on to .mac and see my mail via Safari--so the problem is not that I've mis-remembered my password. The problem seems to be with Mail on this particular machine, rather than with .mac.
I've looked at Mail's preferences/accounts and everything seems to be set properly. Both email accounts are enabled and all the settings appear to be as they should be. Nothing corrupted-looking that I can see in those details.
But no more dialogs this morning about needing to log on to .mac, and that account in my Inbox is greyed out and there is an alert sign to the right of it--a circle with a squiggle in it (looks like a tilde).
Mail DOES allow mail to be sent via either account. I can use Mail to compose and successfully send test messages by selecting the .mac mail account (from the popup menu) to my second non.mac account, and use Mail to receive/read it. I can send email from this second account to my .mac account and receive the message--but only by logging on to .mac via Safari. Mail won't show it to me (as it had been doing so nicely and unproblematically for so long). As I said, the problem seems to be with Mail on this particular machine, rather than with .mac.
    Suggestions?

This indicates the account has been taken offline which occurs when the account cannot connect to the incoming mail server for whatever reason.
At the Mail.app menu bar, go to Mailbox > Online Status > Take your .Mac named account online.
If this causes the same prompt to manually enter the account's password, decline and quit Mail and then try running Keychain First Aid on your login Keychain via Keychain Access.

  • Mail keeps hanging on .Mac account

    Hello,
I have a .Mac account and running Mail with Tiger on an Intel iMac. Most of the time it works just fine. But lately it's been driving me crazy. My two other mail accounts (one POP and the other IMAP) work just fine. But .Mac keeps hanging, refusing to connect to the server. When I try to quit Mail, I can't. I have to force quit it to be able to move on. If I restart the computer, things are OK. But within a couple of hours, it happens again! Any help would be appreciated. (I've checked and my connections are correct [password, etc.]; I can access my .Mac account from the Web, but, increasingly, not on Mail.)

  • Post 10.4.11 problems w/attachments & .mac account

Two problems which have come up since updating to 10.4.11. Whether it's an OS issue or not I don't know.
    1) When I attach a QT movie to an email, instead of the player showing up in the message body at its normal size it views as this tiny little thing -- maybe 30 pixels square. As well, I can usually see another instance of it (or sometimes just the controls part of the player) overlaying the body of my message. If I minimize and then bring back to normal the window, then this ghost image goes away, but the video itself remains at the tiny size.
    2) Have been having an awful lot of trouble getting the mail from my .mac account into Apple Mail. It often times out.

I also have been having an awful lot of trouble getting the mail from my .mac account into Apple Mail. It often times out, and sometimes freezes. Prior to upgrade, I never had problems.
However, for the first day after upgrading it was fine, so maybe it is a dotmac problem.

  • Setting an email account other than Mail as the default

I do not use Mail or Entourage (or have a .mac account), and I wonder if there's a way to set my own email account as the default for saving a photo directly to an email message. Right now my workaround is very complicated.
    Thanks.

    kjm914a:
Welcome to the Apple Discussions. Is your current email account a POP account or is it a web based account? If it's a pop account you can setup Mail as the client for that account and then would have the capability of saving directly to iPhoto as well as emailing directly from iPhoto. You don't need a .Mac account to use Mail.
However, if the account is a web based account I don't think there's any way to save directly to iPhoto. The photos have to be be saved to the HD first before they can be imported into iPhoto.
    Happy New Year
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 08 libraries and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.
