.mac account with ichat

Is it possible for me to have my .mac name appear to everyone else as just my .mac username?
For instance
.mac account = [email protected]
what we want = johnsmith
anyone?

Hi Kagan,
Whatever screen name you use is what is displayed to the other person.
In iChat you can toggle between you screen name and the "Real Name" in the Adress Book Me Card which holds your info.
Your Buddies can, if using iChat add your Real Name or suitable moniker to their iChat Buddy list and therefore Address Book for their entry for you. Other IM clients can do this as well.
@mac names will diplay you as [email protected] which can be a problem if it is an live email address as well. (which is probably what you want to know)
Either get a new trial @mac account and create a name that gives less info and not add it to Mail or get an AIM name and do the same thing.

  • Using my .mac account on iChat AV (problems)

Hi, I've been using iChat AV with my .mac account since december, and it was all fine 'til some weeks ago.
From the end of may 2006 I have many problems using my .mac account in iChat AV.
Sometimes I can connect, but usually I can't connect! And the problem is the same on my iMac G5, on my old iBook G4 12" 1.33, and on my new MacBook 1.83...
When I try to enter with a AIM account it's fine and I connect!
But all my friends have my .mac account and I want to use it!
    Can anyone help me?
P.S. I tried to use programs like adiumX, but I still have the same connection problem using my .mac account! And I still pay for it!!!!

    Hi maurizio79,
Every now and then AIM sort out what they think are unused account names and make them available again.
Whilst they are doing this there are often problems with .mac names for some reason.
After the period that lots of people were having problems, there have been cases of invidual .mac users who have problems.
The solution is to speak to .mac and ask them to look into it.

  • Can I use my msn account with ichat?

I tried to connect to my msn account via Jabber, but the connection to the host : "hotmail.com" failed!
    What happened?
Its the same thing for a google talk account!!!
( I didn't try with an AIM account because I don't have one but i think it should be the same )
Just an other question : do all Mac owners have an @me.com adresse and how to obtain it?
Last question : can we use Skype accounts with ichat?
    Thank you all

I don't believe so. If you have a .Mac account you'd have to set it up manually through the iPhone. I believe it's IMAP?

  • Cannot login to .me or .mac accounts on ichat

    Hi,
I am using OS X mountain lion 10.7.5. When I recently updated my software, it asked me to install ichat (which I did). My problem is that I cannot login to either .me or .mac accounts to see my contacts. I use the same username and password as the one I used to login in to apple's store and itunes. None of them work. How can I log in to these account to get my contact list? I should mention that I can login to icloud just fine as well as all other apple sites and services except ichat.

    Hi,
This thread is iChat and tagged with "iChat".
You mention you have Lion which would be iChat 6 and the Message Beta has run out now.
From there I surmised you were logging your AIM valid Apple IDs into the AIM servers.
Nothing has happened to any or all of your iMessages contacts (Unless you have deleted your Address Book)
However you do now need Mountain Lion to login to the iMessages servers (and the Messages app that does that bit for you).

  • .Mac account and iChat

.Mac account expiring. Will I lose my iChat account with the same name?

    Hi,
Generally speaking a @mac.com name if it is/was a trial still works in iChat even if a paid for account lapses (No matter when you got the trial account).
However MobileMe accounts do not work after the trail Period is stopped or the account lapses.
Since Mobileme allowed people to keep their @mac.com names and we are now only just coming up to the renewal time I don't have any info on whether @mac.com names that were used with MobileMe will keep their iChat functionality.
The current button on the Adding a new Screen Name that says "Get an iChat Account" does in fact link to a Apple Web page to get a @mac.com name for free.
This would suggest that @Mac.names will work after they lapse even if they were linked with a MobileMe account.

  • Using my .Mac account, but iChat wants AIM. What gives?

    Hello,
I think I might be confused about how iChat works. I have a dot-Mac account, and have that information entered correctly in the iChat preferences. However, when I start iChat, it asks me for AIM account information. Am I mising something here? Does iChat only work with AIM accounts? I thought iChat worked with dot-Mac accounts, too (especially since I have the option of dot-Mac iChat encryption). Do I need to have an AIM AND a dot-Mac account (this doesn't make sense, but I suppose you never know)? I have tried deleted the plist and restarting the computer, but no matter how many times I try to rebuild my iChat account, it keeps asking me for AIM account info. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Shannon
    Dual 1GHz G4 MDD, 14 G4 iBook   Mac OS X (10.4.3)

    Hi Shannon,
iChat uses the AIM servers to login and start Text chatting.
When iChat started Apple decided to join the AIM network and arranged that @mac names would be usable on the AIM system.
There is one drawback. Apple allow passwords of over 20 characters and the AIM system only allows 16 as a Max.
Is your password too long ?
When you go through the Start up Screens the place where you enter the screen name should be a drop down to be able to select AIM or @mac types.
You just have to select the @mac option

  • Apple ID/.Mac account with other IM services

Ok so simply ichat is a multiIM application. So if i have a .Mac account who can i talk to? Can i talk to AIM people? and are features limited between talking to .Mac users and AIM people, what features do i lose?

    Hi,
iChat can use any Valid AIM login as your Screen Name.
Apple @mac.com names are all Valid Login names. Lapsed paid for accounts and trials beyond the 60 days and current one linked to a MobileMe account.
Paid for and Trial MobileMe names (Ending @me.com) are also valid names. (Lapsed Trial Accounts are not valid).
Apple names may or may not be used as Apple IDs for other purposes. (logins here at Discussions, iTunes or for use at the Store).
Broadly speaking this will give you an "AIM" Buddy list as it logs in to the AIM servers.
You can add Buddies with the same three Name types.
    NOTES:
AIM allows you to actually register an Email address as a Screen Name (like @me.com is). (I have in fact seen a Hotmail.com name listed)
They have also made arrangements with other ISPs to allow their email IDs as Screen Names like the Apple Deal.
Jabber IDs come in two basic forms.
Google Mail IDs once you have Enable Talk on your Google Account page will allow you access to the GoogleTalk Service.
A Name/ID from any other Jabber Server. (these tend to use an email like looking name for you
AS indicated above an AIM Buddy list can have Buddies that are also AIM valid names added to it. So you may have a mixture of @Me.com, @mac.com and AIM names in it as a Buddy List.
Jabber IDs and GoogleTlak names can be added to a Jabber or GoogleTalk Buddy list.
You cannot mix or Add Jabber IDs to an AIM Buddy List and vice versa.
    AIM Buddy lists.
In theory you can Audio Only or Video to anyone that is using a AIM based App that can Video or Audio Chat.
For a PC that is the AIM App for PCs or Trillian (comes in two forms, the Old Pro version and Astra)
For Mac users it is of course iChat.
    Jabber/Google Buddy Lists
This can Audio Only and Video Chat to any other iChat User also using a Jabber/Google Buddy list.
It cannot do it to anyone logged in to their Google Mail page and using the Chat option there (This tends to be Mac Intels Only using a Plug-in for their browser) nor to the PC app also called GoogleTalk.
You cannot Video or Audio to a Jabber App on PC or Mac.
NOTES: Jabber apps that can do Video and Audio tend to have something called the Jingle Library added on to the App that makes the connection. Google have a variation on this that is also not compatible from the GoogleTalk App to other Jabber Apps on PCs.
    See here for more
I have yet to come across a Mac Jabber app that has Video or Audio abilities.
Apart from GoogleTalk, most Jabber Registrations need you to have a separate Jabber App (very few have Web Site based Registrations) and require that you use that to Register with a Jabber Server.
Some Jabber Servers run what is called Transports that allow Text Chatting between Jabber IDs and some of the other main IM services.
    See this List
With using a Server with the required transports you can use these Instructions to Text Chat to MSN and Yahoo Buddies (this is not difficult but is involved).
    Features.
An valid AIM Buddy lists allows you to Video, Audio or text Chat to any other AIM valid name.
If you have An @mac.com name that is linked to a MobileMe account or a MobileMe account name you can use Encryption in those Chats. (not @me.com or linked @mac.com to AIM
A Jabber/Google list can only Video or Audio chat to other iChat users but can text chat to all the options above (GoogleTlak App, Google Mail Chat link and iChat Users).

  • How to replace .mac account with iCloud for web hosting?

I have a website that I created on MS Frontpage and have been uploading that to my .mac account for years.  Eventually I'll probably change to iWeb, but for the time being I just want to make it active again.  With iCloud, my .mac account was deleted, and I am just now getting around to updating.  The question I have is whether or not this same funcationality exists now that .mac or mobileme is  no longer around.

iWeb is no longer being developed or supported by Apple but it is still functional under the latest OS X...

  • Can you use any email account with iChat?

It appears that iChat allows you to add other other email accounts other than AOL or MobileMe but can you chat using these accounts and can you screen share etc with non MobileMe users?
Message was edited by: Peter O'Toole

    Hi,
The answer is yes but your question is wrong.
The AIM page for Registration now allows you to use any Email ID as a Screen Name.
AIM has long done this for the Apple IDs of [email protected] and the MobileMe type email IDs of [email protected]
They have also done it for other ISPs in the past as well
More recently I have had someone test with me having used a Hotmail ID in the AIM Registration process.
Jabber IDs look like email IDs and in the case of the GoogleTalk option they can be.
As long as the Screen Name works in one of your Buddy lists it will be valid And if they are an iChat user with iChat 4 or above then they will be able to Screen Share.
    NOTES:
Screen Sharing in iChat uses a Random port so any router or modem that routes need to be able to use UPnP or Port Mapping Protocol to open the ports or it will not work.

  • Link Mac account with server account

I haven't been able to find anything on this issue, thought I would post and see if anything comes up.  Before switching to 10.6 from 10.5, I had each Mac workstation's main user account paired with an XServe account in System Preferences - Accounts.  When we needed to share a volume from any station, we could just choose the share permissions from an automatically generated list of server accounts.  After upgrading to 10.6 (with clean installs, as there had been too many upgrades and migrations over time) we have lost the System Preference option to select a server account, so we have to enter those server accounts manually.
Is this something that has changed from 10.5 to 10.6?
I have tried creating new accounts, hoping the option would return, but no luck.  I still have the option on my Mac Pro but I installed over 10.5 (I know - asking for trouble).  Has anyone else found this problem?

I guess you running a open directory on your server, have you paired the Mac's with the server, The new way do that is in account preferences/login option/join network account server.

  • The button to create a new account with iChat does not appear

I've been trying to create a new account .mac from iChat, but the button does not appear, can you help please?
    Thank you
    Ivan

    Hi,
    The @mac.com Registration is Here
You are right that there was a Button in iChat and iChat 5 that when @mac.com was selected as the type would then sned you off to that page (in iChat 5 the AIM option and using the Button took you to the AIM registration)
Soon after Apple brought this to iChat 5 then AIM moved their Registration page making the Link useless.
For some reason Apple also removed the ability in iChat 5 to go to the @mac.com site
The Button is absent (rather than "Missing") in iChat 6 and Messages beta.
The AIM registration Page is Here
ON the @mac.com site keep the password to 16 characters or less (The AIM server limits)
You cannot use another Email to link to the @mac.com name that is already in use with an Apple ID

  • Can't use my .Mac account in iChat

Does anyone have the server address and port for .Mac? My computer thinks I am trying to connect to the AOL server.

    Hi,
Umm, now we enter the muddy waters of what is an Apple ID and where can it be used.
You can create an Apple ID for Logging in here at Discussions, iTunes, the On line Store and a few other places like the Developers areas.
In most cases this ends up being an Email address that you have.
You certainly have to list an Email for contact and for retrieval of Passwords and such.
Using the iChat "Get an iChat Account" option in iChat 4 when set to the @Mac.com setting (And the MobileMe and @Mac.com options in iChat 5) will take you to this page to register for an @mac.com name
At this point some history may help.
@mac.com names were the email names that Apple gave when people registered for the .Mac Service that preceded MobileMe.
At that time a Trial accounts worked in iChat forever, as did Lapsed accounts.
MobileMe does allow Trial accounts but the name as a valid iChat Screen Name stops working once the Trial is cancelled.
Apple Email addresses from @Mac.com or MobileMe (@Me.com) are automatically Apple IDs
They are also automatically Valid AIM Screen Names (iChat Names)
So. You Apple ID if based on an Email that does not come from Apple is not likely to be an Valid AIM screen Name.
Therefore in the screen in iChat > Preferences > Accounts > + Button at bottom of list, you cannot use the @mac.com option (Or the MobileMe option) and enter the Apple ID as the Name. (If that is what you meant by "create")
If you go on to select @mac.com or the MobileMe option and then hit the Button "Get an iChat Account" it will depend which version of iChat you are using as to where you get Linked to.
All options including the AIM one lead to the Apple @mac.com name registration if using iChat 4
In iChat 5 the AIM one leads to the AIM Registration one and both Apple ones lead to the @mac.com page.
    Stated another way.
Any Apple Email ID is also an Apple ID (iTunes, Stores, Discussions) AND An Valid AIM Screen name - Logging in then need the password to be 16 characters or Less.
Any Apple ID not based on an Apple Email is NOT an Valid AIM Screen Name.
    <hr>
    There's more.
Any @Mac.com name will work in iChat. If this was registered before the MobileMe service began AND the account was paid for - at the start of MobileMe you got a @me.com and for Email Purposes these could be linked and you could effectively still use the @mac.com ending one with the MobileMe service. (They are somewhat interchangeable in Mail)
On the iChat front though, this gives you TWO iChat Screen Names. (They are not Interchangeable here)
I hope all this lets you see where you are at.
