Mac AE plugin: 32/64-bit fat binary not possible

The After Effects CS5 SDK Guide makes the following claim:
"On Mac OS, the 32-bit and 64-bit plug-ins can be combined into a fat binary, using the Mac OS tool ‘lipo’."
In practice it doesn't seem to be possible to create a single Mac plugin bundle that would be compatible with both 32-bit CS4 and 64-bit CS5.
Combining the binaries using lipo does work, but the problem is that there's a single resource file, and CS4 and CS5 require different values for "AE_Effect_Spec_Version" in the PiPL.
Changing the required spec version value for CS4 compatibility causes a crash in CS5, and vice versa.

Hi Pauli,
After Effects supports multiple PiPLs in a single binary.  As you discovered, the CS5 and pre-CS5 versions will require separate PiPLs with different version numbers.  Some developers have been able to create a single binary by building the 64-bit version using the CS5 SDK headers, and the 32-bit version using an earlier SDK, and then lipo the two together to create a single binary.  Note that multiple PiPLs are not officially supported in Premiere Pro, so Premiere Pro will need separate binaries.
Hope this helps,
Zac

  • "This virtual machine is configured for 64-bit guest operating systems. However, 64-bit operation is not possible.  This host does not support Intel VT-x"

Hi, I have installed vmware 5.5 hypervisor on hp G8 microserver. I have created one vm as windows 2008 R2. I have also install vmware workstation 11 on this vm. In this workstation when I tried to run vmware 5.5 hypervisor I come across "This virtual machine is configured for 64-bit guest operating systems. However, 64-bit operation is not possible.  This host does not support Intel VT-x" this statement. Which shows that the host machine does not support virtualization and for that you need to go in Bios and enable it but in present case as host machine is also a vm and you would not find much detail of Bios when you log into the Bios therefore, I am pretty much stuck here. I don't see any information in relation to this. Now my question is:
    1. Can we run ESXi inside a vm which is already sitting on ESXi?

I moved the discussion from VMware Workstation to Nested Virtualization which contains several hints on what's possible and what needs to be configured to make things work.

  • Waking up the Mac from a complete power OFF with WOL not possible, ***

I was told by AU applecare stuff that ALL Mac cannot be woke up from a complete power OFF. I asked the team at applecare because my mini server won't do a WOL.
    Is this for REAL?
Can't I do WOL on Macs?
What a horror! How is this possible  in this day and age? Macs are intel macs now, and it is just a matter of the network card/chip has this build in. A $200 PC can do this ages ago.
It is huge environmental disaster if we cannot wake the Macs from power off remotely via LAN/WAN, and putting them to sleep when not needed.
Can someone help brighten up my day by pointing me to some official documentation on this or you real experiences on waking up a Mac with WOL
    from a complete power OFF?

Maybe necroposting here, but HRMUser is right. Many (most?) modern PCs support WOL from a powered-off (shutdown) state. PCs that support WOL usually have a BIOS setting that allows you to enable/disable it. The network interface itself is powered enough that it will "see" magic WOL packets. I regularly use this feature for PC administration. It's annoying / silly that Macs don't support WOL from power off.

  • My mac machine has firefox installed and updating is not possible as connecting to the server message comes and updates never occur.

I get a message that updates are available. When I click to get updates , i get a window that updating firefox and connecting to the update server. Even after long time, the process goes on . Updates never get installed. My version installed is 4.0.1 on Apple Mac Book Pro.

If there are problems with updating or with the permissions then easiest is to download the full version and trash the currently installed version to do a clean install of the new version.
Download a new copy of the Firefox program and save the disk image (dmg) file to the desktop

  • Unable to install Plugin on 64-bit Mac

I have a Mac OS X Lion 64 bit with Flash builder 4.6. I downloaded the SAP Netweaver Gateway Plugin and followed the readme.html instructions to install and it does not work. First it said "No software site found at jar:file:/.....flash...zip!/". Do you wish to edit the location.
Then I change the address to jar:/<absolutepath>/<filename.zip> and then it said
Unable to read repository at jar:/Users/kalyanbk/Downloads/flashbuilder_sap_p2_plugin_121211.zip/content.xml.
There is no file content.xml that I could see when I expanded the zip file. Please advise.

It was my mistake that I was execuing the installer.jar. The downloaded zip file server103_generic.zip has to be renamed to a jar file server103_generic.jar and the same has to be executed.

I've installed windows 7 with the help of bootcamp on my macbook pro 2011.
Please help me how to install mac drivers for windows7 64 bit???

You either download drivers from within Boot Camp Assistant and save to USB FAT disk, or you insert and use 10.6.x OS X DVD when in Windows and install and run the SETUP from there.

Step 4: Install the Boot Camp Drivers for Windows
After installing Windows, install Mac-specific drivers and other software for Windows using your Mac OS X installation disc.  The Mac OS X disc installs drivers to support Mac components, including AirPort,built-in iSight camera, the Apple Remote, the trackpad on a portable Mac, and thefunction keys on an Apple keyboard.
The Mac OS X disc also installs the Boot Camp control panel for Windows and theApple Boot Camp system tray item.
To install the Boot Camp drivers:
1 Eject the Windows installation disc.
2 Insert the Mac OS X disc.  If the installer doesn’t start automatically, browse the disc using Windows Explorerand double-click the setup.exe file in the Boot Camp directory.
    3 Follow the onscreen instructions.
If a message appears that says the software you’re installing has not passed Windows  Logo testing, click Continue Anyway.
Windows that appear only briefly during the installation don’t require your input.
If nothing appears to be happening, there may be a hidden window that you mustrespond to. Check the taskbar and look behind open windows.
Important: Do not click the Cancel button in any of the installer dialogs.
4 After your computer restarts, follow the instructions in the Found New Hardware  Wizard to update your software drivers (Windows XP only).
5 Follow the instructions for any other wizards that appear.
6 Check for updated Boot Camp drivers by using Apple Software Update or going to www.apple.com/support/bootcamp.
If You Have Problems Installing the Device Drivers
If it appears that the Boot Camp drivers weren’t successfully installed, try repairing them.
    To repair Boot Camp drivers:
1 Start up your computer in Windows.
2 Insert your Mac OS X installation disc.
3 If the installer doesn’t start automatically, browse the disc using Windows Explorerand double-click the setup.exe file in the Boot Camp directory.
4 Click Repair and follow the onscreen instructions.
If a message appears that says the software you’re installing has not passed Windows  Logo testing, click Continue Anyway.
If you need to reinstall specific drivers, you can install one driver at a time. For example,if your built-in iSight camera isn’t working, you can reinstall just the iSight driver.
Individual drivers are in the Drivers folder on the Mac OS X installation disc.

  • 32 bit plugins in 64 bit Konqueror?

I was searching around for stuff and I found this about running 32 bit plugins in 64 bit Konqueror:
    http://www.linuxfordummies.org/index.ph … ic=625.new
I tried exactly what it said and the 32 bit nspluginscan file hangs at 5%. I ran into another page that said that all you need is the 32 bit nspluginviewer file. I tried that and the nsplugin scan worked, but to no avail. I'm wondering if these people have a basic 32 bit chroot environment and don't know it. I also ran across other pages that have a more sophisticated approach, but they are based on Gentoo and Debian which both have modular KDE builds. I'm curious if others have run across this and have had any success.
The implications are stagering. Konqueror already runs Java applets (if you have the Java pointing towards the java executable in your JRE and not the generic 'java' command). Also, Sun caved on the 64 bit plug-in; they're trying to get it out the door with Mustang (Mozilla only).  I've heard that Helix Player already builds natively in 64 bit and Real is working on their part. The next MPlayer (today's SVN) plays nearly all WM files natively. If Flash were up one way or another... We're nearly (already?) at the point of 64 bit Linux being the multi-media powerhouse that 32 bit Linux is.

Hey skottish... (nice old post to bump)
I've added two packages (and a bunch of lib32 dependency packages) to AUR...
The first is nspluginwrapper-konq, it patchs nsplugins with fixed NPAPI headers and makes nspluginwrapper work with konqueror.
The second (better, all singing, all dancing, kick ass) option/package lib32-konqueror-nsplugins uses 32bit nsplugins (from the i686 package). I recomend using this one, as anyone who has used nspluginwrapper in FF knows it's not 100% stable (but it's always good to have options ).
    Enjoy!

  • Rumor confirmed:  CS4 will remain 32-bit for Mac, but will be 64-bit in Windows

Photoshop, Lightroom, and Adobe's 64-bit roadmap
    http://blogs.adobe.com/jnack/
CS4 will remain 32-bit for Mac, but will be 64-bit in Windows.

i For the most part, it seems like most of us in prepress/photography/creative are fine with our Macs with 4 to 8 or 16 gb of memory installed. A 64 bit app isn't going to change MY life or how I work.
Well it may do, considering the roof is well below the ram capacity and the OS has to do the hard work.
"In our testing, when an app isn't using a large data set (one that would otherwise require memory swapping), the speedup due to running in 64-bit mode is around 8-12%."
Look to when that actually starts happening...its not where your ram roof is.
Probably a cross grade here...we've been running 64 bit with 3d for a while now, and shifting that roof has allowed much more heavy scene data to be created easily.
Read the article, it's not just PS that's affected...there may be limited scope for the need in AI, but AE would see the light.
Put it this way, we can see the advantages...and obviously adobe can...they just havent been capable of applying that to the apple yet.

  • Can Mac mini boot into 64-bit kernel

    http://macperformanceguide.com/SnowLeopard-64bit.html says:
To determine if your Mac has 32-bit or 64-bit firmware, copy/paste the following command into Terminal:
    ioreg -l -p IODeviceTree | grep firmware-abi
    ...output:
    | | "firmware-abi" = <EFI64>
As shown above, the firmware-abi has the value EFI64, indicating that my Mac Pro is 64-bit capable. If it reads EFI32, then your Mac cannot be booted into a 64-bit kernel.
...well, my Mac mini displays that EFI64 64-bit info, but when booting with the "64" keys down it nevertheless uses the 32-bit kernel.
So can the Mac mini boot into 64-bit kernel?

What you are missing is that Apple has written into the boot ROM for certain Macs which meet the criteria to not be able to boot with the 64-bit kernel. The Mac mini is not allowed to boot into 64-bit mode by Apple. There is a list of non-pro Macs hard coded into the EFI boot firmware that tells it not to allow these Macs to boot into 64-bit mode. The Mac mini is on the list! Try as you may the Mac mini will not do it without a hack.
If you google this issue you can find a hack to rewrite the boot firmware and allow the mini to boot into 64-bit mode. It can be dangerous to your mini if you make a mistake!
    Here is one hack;

Many plugin vendors haven't updated their plugins to work with x64, or you have to download a special x64 version (Flash and Java for example). Which plugins is it that you are having problems with?

  • Developing a plugin for 64 bit CS4

    Hi,
I am trying to develop plugin for 64 bit version of Adobe Illustrator CS4. Is ther any separate SDK for 64 bit. ??
If not , will existing SDK work for 64 bit as well ??
If i already have a plugin code ready for 32 version, what things i will be required to do to migrate my code to 64 bit .
    Thanks in advance.

Adobe Illustrator CS5 is a 32-bit application. These processors are listed in the requirements since it can be run on a 64-bit machine. i.e. you will be running 32-bit application on a 64-bit OS.
