.Mac Aliases in Mail Preferences?

On my Powerbook, it is not showing my .Mac aliases, and there is no button in the Mail preferences that allows me to show .Mac aliases. I'm baffled as to why this is. On my work Mac (an 2005 iMac (don't have specifics here at home)), there is a button in the preferences that allowed me to include the aliases in the Account pulldown menu when composing a message. I synch between the two computers using .mac as well, but my home computer is my primary computer.
Any ideas as to why this is working on one computer and not the other? Is my version of "Mail" just old? If so, how can I download a newer version?

I just found that on my home Powerbook, the .mac account is set to be a POP instead of a .Mac. I disabled the account and created a new one with the same settings except making it the correct kind of account, and the aliases now work.

  • Using .Mac aliases in Mail?

I registered two aliases, one for registrations and one for mailing lists I'm on so that it's easy to sort the stuff out. It's working pretty well so far, but unfortunately I can't put mail on the list from Mail because of the fact that it automatically sends from the main address and not the alias, and hence it gets bounced for not being on the list. I know I can specify which I want to send from when I'm logged in to .Mac on the Apple website, but that kind of defeats the purpose of using Mail in the first place at that point. Is there a way around this without registering my main account with the list?

    Paul,
if you have set up your .Mac account as IMAP or POP (instead of .Mac), you can manually add the aliases to that account - simply add the additional email adresses to the address field in the account preferences, separating the individual addresses by commas. You should then get an account popup for outgoing messages which allows you to specify the sending account.

  • Mail preference photo

I just purchased and set up .mac. In Mail Preference, add custom photo, I put a Dragonfly icon that it said will be on my emails. It is jpeg 4 kb. It shows up on my end when I view sent mail, but the people I send email to state they do not get it on their email. When I was using just mac mail it worked, now with .mac I'm having problems. What am I doing wrong?
    iMac G5 20" (A)   Mac OS X (10.4.8)   1 GB RAM, 160 GB HD, AP, BT, iSight

Likely dot-mac mail is sending your little dragonfly as an attachment.
How it appears to the recipient is completely up to THEM.
    For example:
I have my email program configured to only display the PlainText of the message (I don't WANT to see all the little cute-sy attachments that people send in their emails).
I would see that your dragonfly was attached, but I wouldn't see it unless I opened it specifically.
In other words, you;re probably not doing anything wrong.

  • Once again, my .mac aliases have disappeared from Mail.... Arghhh! help?

Once again, with no warning, all my .mac aliases have disappeared from the dropdowns in my Mail app (OS 10.4.11). They still exist in .mac/mobile me webmail, and in Mail i'm still receiving emails addressed to them. But I can't reply to these emails with the alias, nor create new emails with aliases.
I have tried Sync-ing with the site- i recollect that has worked in the past, but now no change. i have tried adding the aliases in with commas after the primary address in Preferences (as is suggested in KB below), but it does not work- and the next time Prefs is open, they are gone. In Mail preferences, the account is listed as ".mac", which is listed in the KB as one of the correct types (the other being imap).
I use my .mac aliases a lot, and have for years. i do NOT like or want to go to .mac/me Webmail to be able to use them. i do NOT want to change them to .me addresses/aliases. I can't stand how they just randomly come and go as far as being available as dropdowns in Mail... what the heck is up with Apple? i'm paying $100 for these kinds of services (excuse me, $99) and they can't keep a few aliases available to their own app (Mail)? If they weren't so deeply embedded in my business uses, i'd ditch the whole thing.
Anyway, enuf ranting; does anyone know the solution or work-around? Nothing in the below KB worked for me, even tho it is supposed to.
    the non-helpful KB: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2296

If your aliases are disappearing after you enter them, that would indicate that your Mail preferences file has become corrupted. The only solution for that is to delete the com.apple.mail.plist file in Home/Library/Preferences, then restart Mail and setup your account(s) again.
However, before you do that, you must remove all your mail account folders that being with "IMAP-"; otherwise you'll create more problems for yourself. Those are located in Home/Library/Mail.

  • Unable to edit email accounts mac mail preferences

I make changes - like deleting an account and adding a new one - in Mac Mail preferences, but I don't get the pop up asking if I want to save the changes. So after I turn off Mail and turn it back on, the changes have disappeared. Any way to fix this so I can get rid of my old account and add my new one?
    Thanks!

I went to the local Apple store earlier this week and asked on of the folks at the Genius Bar if he knew how to set the outgoing mail address. He showed me that I could enable the "reply to" field and then put my mail forwarding address into that field. Unfortunately, there is no easy way to pre-populate that field so that it always has my mail forwarding account address.

  • New .Mac Mail preferences

In the new .Mac mail preferences, the two-pane view uses the same window to view the message list, view a message, or compose a new message.
Can I do this with Mail (2.1) on my mac, or is it just a .Mac feature?

Can I do this with Mail (2.1) on my mac,
No. This is a feature of the webmail. There's really no direct connection between the capabilities of Mail and what you might be able to do using a browser with a webmail service.

  • Changing from ".Mac" account in Mail to "IMAP"

When I orginally set up my primary Mail account on my laptop it was ".Mac", rather than IMAP or POP. I'm finding I can't fully take advantage of the Alias features. Another posting here explains that if I delete the existing ".Mac" account and build a new one as IMAP, I'd then be able to create alias email addresses. In the present configuration I can "create them", but they don't appear as available in the pull down menu when I send mail. I'm a bit reluctant to delete my present .Mac account in Mail because I get a warning that all my mail will go away if I delete that account. To complicate matters, I sometimes work on my iMac at home, and that one's set up just the same as a ".Mac" account. Presumably I'd have to change that one too? Or is there some way I can make setting up the alias addresses work while keeping my primary account as a .Mac account? Obviously I'm not relating conceptually to what's going on here!

I access my .Mac account as a .Mac type account with Tiger Mail and I use/access a single .Mac alias address at a time. I have no problems with the alias address being available as an address to choose from via the Accounts selection when composing a message.
Do you access more than one alias address at a time?
Does it make any difference when selecting Edit Email Aliases under the Email Address field available under the Account Information tab for the account preferences?
Since a .Mac account is really an IMAP type account and behaves in the same way, when deleting the account in Mail, no messages available at the server in the account's Inbox or any other server stored messages will be affected when deleting the account and re-creating it as an IMAP type account.
What you do lose when deleting an account in Mail are any locally stored mailboxes/messages for the account such as Drafts, Sent, Trash and Junk if these messages are not stored on the server.
If you don't store Sent messages on the server, before deleting the account you need to do the following:
Create/utilize an "On My Mac" location mailbox which is stored on the hard drive and not associated with any account. Transfer the account's Sent messages from the locally stored Sent mailbox for the account to the user created "On My Mac" location mailbox.
Delete and re-create the account in Mail as an IMAP type account. All server stored messages in the account's Inbox mailbox will be available again in the account's Inbox mailbox and after sending a message with the newly created IMAP account which will create a new Sent mailbox for the account, you can transfer the old sent messages from the "On My Mac" location mailbox to the new Sent mailbox for the account so no messages will be lost.

  • Can I set up a Non .mac Email Pop mail client Alias for sending SMTP mail?

I have a yahoo.com POP mail account - [email protected] When I'm lgged into Yahoo mail, this account can receive and send mail from serveral aliases - [email protected], [email protected], etc.
Using Tiger's mail.app, I can log into the Yahoo smtp server and get all my mail, including mail to the alias names.
I would like to be able to reply from my Mac's mail.app account, using one of the aliases, instead of my POP account name. In other words, I'd like the From field be listed as "[email protected]" and not "[email protected]"
In mail.app (v2.1) is there any way to do this?
Alan Sampson' suggestion doesn't work - when I set the From field to the alias name, it looks like mail tries to login to the yahoo SMTP server under the alias, and it gets rejected.
    ( - see http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=2603372&#2603372 )
Go to Mail > Preferences > Accounts and under the Account Information tab for the primary email account preferences, enter all alias email addresses in the Email Address field for the account separate by a comma.
[email protected], [email protected], [email protected]

If Yahoo allows this, it should work. Open Mail Help, type alias in the search box, and read the article titled Adding multiple email alias addresses to an account. Could it be that you're trying to put the aliases in the wrong field (i.e. User Name rather than Email Address)? Or maybe it's Yahoo's SMTP server that doesn't allow you to do this?

  • .Mac aliases no longer appearing in Account pop-up menu

Hi, a couple of days ago I noticed that my .Mac aliases are no longer listed in the Account pop-up menu of new messages. I thought it's a temporary .Mac problem, but this has continued.
The account is a .Mac account (not POP nor IMAP), and I can go to Mail>Preferences>Accounts and click on the "Edit Email Aliases" button and can see that they are all still there on .Mac.
How can I get them to show up again?
MacBook Pro   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

    Hi Hilal.
I don’t know whether this would make a difference, but it may be worth a try:
    1. Quit Mail if it’s running.
    2. Make a backup copy of the ~/Library/Mail folder, just in case something goes wrong while trying to solve the problem. You can do this in the Finder by dragging the folder to the Desktop while holding the Option (Alt) key down, for example. This is where all your mail is stored.
    3. In the Finder, go to ~/Library/Preferences/. Locate com.apple.mail.plist and move it to the Desktop (to be deleted if this fixes the problem).
    4. Open Mail. You’ll have to set up your non-.Mac accounts from scratch all over again. If given the option to import existing mailboxes or something like that, don’t. Just enter the account information and Mail will automagically rediscover the data in ~/Library/Mail/ when done.
You’ll also have to re-configure most of your settings in Mail > Preferences. For spam-related security reasons, the first thing you should do is go to Preferences > Viewing and disable Display remote images in HTML messages if it’s enabled.
    5. As a side effect of re-creating com.apple.mail.plist, Mail might rename Outbox (which is where messages waiting to be sent are stored) to Delivered. The name of that mailbox is actually a misnomer, as it would contain messages (if any) that couldn’t be delivered for some reason. You can delete that mailbox if you wish.
Note: For those not familiarized with the ~/ notation, it refers to the user’s home folder. You can easily locate any of the folders referred to in this post by copying the folder path here, doing Go > Go to Folder in the Finder, and pasting the folder path there.

  • Not receiving mail to .mac and other mail issue's

    HI all
OK first up I cannot recieve any mail to my @mac.com address, when ever I try to send a test email to myself I recieve a bounced email back saying that 'Delivery to the following recipient failed permanently' I have read discussions on this matter and understand that I should be able to recieve email to this address as it is still in use for .mac users despite the iCloud change over but haven't been able to resolve this problem so far.
I also have a @me.com address which appears to recieve mail ok but would like to continue recieving mail to my @mac.com.
Secondly, I am only able to recieve mail to my @me.com address as when I try to send from this account I recieve a 'Cannot send message using the server iCloud' yet I am able to send mail from a different @me.com address that I created when iCloud was set out.
Both the @mac.com and @me.com addresses are original addresses from when thos services were first brought about but both have problems since the iCloud change over, @me.com addresses that I have created since the iCloud change over appear to work fine.
I let Lion set up all of my iCloud stuff through system preferences when it was rolled out and therefore has set up the mail preferences which are as follows :
In the address field I have both my @mac.com and @me.com seperated by a comma ([email protected], [email protected])
Incoming mail server is p02-imap-mail.me.com which I greyed out !?!
Under advanced is Port: 993, Use SSL: Checked, Authentication: Apple Token
Outgoing mail server: iCloud, however when I clicked on the edit SMTP server list iCloud SMTP is not in the list
    Thankyou !

Immediately contact Apple. Call a Genius and at least leave Apple some feedback. This should not be happening. It was indeed promised by Apple that all @mac.com addresses and aliases would remain functional if you had any of them before the switch to iCloud. They are still working for me, luckily.
Also, try changing the incoming and outgoing mail servers. Up until last week I was happily using POP with iCloud until – bam! – Apple decided to only support IMAP from then on. This change left me no option but to change to IMAP. My incoming server address is slightly different from yours. Maybe changing it to the new (?) address will solve your problem. At least it's worth a try, I'd say.
In my Mail.app Accounts preference pane, the IMAP server address is p99-imap.mail.me.com. I remember when setting up IMAP that the summary listed this same address as the incoming server. It doesn't show up in my SMTP server list either. So that should be normal behaviour, I guess.
    Good luck!

  • .mac aliases

I have several aliases set up in my .mac account. I just started using Mail to access that account, and I get mail sent to any of the aliases, but they don't show up with the colors as they do in .mac, and I cannot send from any of them.
I know I'm supposed to select an address from the "accounts" pop-up menu, but there is no pop-up menu for that.

  • Replies and .Mac Aliases

    Hi,
.Mac aliases don't seem to support capital letters. [email protected] turns into [email protected]
That's fine, and one can send an email to either address.
However, if someone sends an email to [email protected] (note the capital letter), Mail will reply using...
    "[email protected]" <[email protected]>
Is there any way to set it so that if someone sends an email to an alias with a slight capital letter change, Mail will still reply from that account (and show that it is that account). I want the reply to show up as...
"[email protected]" <[email protected]> regardless of if the email was sent to Example or example.
    Any ideas?
    Thank you!
    btabz

    btabz,
Testing with another User Account, the behavior seems the same, and as that New User, I gave it no opportunity to "learn" anything.
However, there is an oddity to note -- I have Mail Preferences/Composing set to highlight any address, not of my primary Domain. As a result of this, all my .mac addresses are marked in Red, whenever I use one as the From address (this also marks the To addresses not of the chosen domain) -- I find it helps me focus on whether I am using the intended address, since my Usernames are similar for several addresses/domains. Anyway, when I hit Reply for one of these .mac alias address authored emails, the resulting default address that we have been testing, is not marked in Red, but if I choose one from the list, it is! Also, if I use Reply for a message sent to my main .mac address, then that address is marked in Red immediately.
This is confusing, I realize, but it means Mail is not recognizing the .mac alias as a foreign domain, when first using Reply.
    Odd, to say the least.

  • Unable to open Mail Preferences, can't remove/add accounts.

Sorry I posted this under Tiger discussions as well, but it wasn't my intention. I am running Leopard now:
    - I upgraded to Leopard today. My mail application that I have been using all along has been Entourage, but decided to switch to Mail.
    - Setup walked me through and I configured another account (besides the .mac account created automatically).
    - I wanted to change settings of the newly configured account, but when I go to Mail->Preferences... NOTHING HAPPENS!
    - Tried reinstalling Mail from CD. Tried rebooting MAC. Tried removing and reinstalling again... nothing!
So I can't open Mail Preferences to modify existing accounts. What can I do?

    Ernie,
    Thanks again.
This is strange indeed! I can not do what you suggested. We must not be on the same page.
When I select the Mail pull down menu right under "About Mail" is the "Preferences" item. There are a series of periods behind it which usually indicates more options when the item is selected or highlighted. In this case nothing happens until it is selected at which you are taken to a "general" screen full of items with scroll through lists to select from. Accounts is not an item. Holding down the option key doesn't change the results at any point I tried.
My Mail version is 3.0 (912.1/912).
I may have to give up on Mail and go back to Entourage or thunderbird.
