Mac alternative for Coffeecup's Password Wizard

Hi
We have an organisation for history teachers, and we also publish a magazine.
We would like to post past & new issues off the magazine on our website, but only for those who are subscribed to the magazine. iWeb only has one login & password.
Does anyone know off a simple app that can manage this?
I've been looking everywhere for something like this to run on a Mac, for someone who doesn't know anything about php or MySQL.
What we also would like to do is that people could upload stuff to the site (interactivity), f.i. they have a good lesson prepaired off the French Revolution, can they then upload it? Is that possible?
A bit like adding pics to a web-gallery?
Already thanks from all Flemish history teachers…
JVK

That is why I'm looking for something else, so that not everyone has the same login and pass.
Does that change with a php-database?
Why is this so difficult to do?
Thanks already!

  • What is an MAC alternative for FS Capture?

What is the best MAC alternative for FS Capture?

There are a number of methods built into to the OS itself. sanjampet posted a few of the shortcuts. You can find more shortcuts in OS X Help. If you don't want to remember shortcuts, you can also use the Grab utility that came with your Mac, or open Preview and choose File/Take Screen Shot. If you want to record video (since that is also a feature of FS Capture), you can open QuickTime Player and do New Screen Recording.
But the OS X screen capture features do not do everything that FS Capture can do. If you need more, there are some real screen capture workhorses like SnapzPro X, iShowU, SnagIt, ScreenFlow, etc. so do you can do things like name the captures as you make them or set a folder for them to go into.

  • .Mac Alternatives for Free

I am a cheap person and I was wondering what are some great .Mac alternatives. So far I have run into NotMac (Leapord not support) which makes your Mac the server and gives you all the feature of .Mac and how ever much space you have on the computer. And there is also sitesled.com for webhosting (like 512MB). Any Others That are good?????

Hosting on your machine isn't the best idea, home computers are not designed to handle web hosting. Thats what servers are for. Although it will work, you are almost assured a painfully slow load times for anyone not on your computer.
Not true, web server is very light weight (for home use), modern computers should be able to... I used to have a PPC-9600 as a server, heck my Newton PDA could host a web site (text base).
Now, the problems are the contents and the back-end pipe, ie: at home you have what? DSL? cable modem? if you have DSL connection your upload speed is ~400kbits/sec, I have to check cable modem speed.
Nonetheless, the real problem is that you have to leave the darn thing on all the time - even when you only get one hit a day.

  • Mac alternatives for affordable 5.1 AC3 encoding?

A musician, I was looking into DVDSP 4 so I could get into adding 5.1 audio created in Cubase SX to video. I have FCPE, which has more than plenty of video production features for me, so obviously I don't want to spend $1300 just for 5.1 AC3 encoding.
Is there an alternative for 5.1 dolby encoding for mac users under the $500 mark? Do I need to go over to the dark side for this? (I've seen a couple apps for Windows).

    Hi again-
Okay, about DVD-A: you asked about playback options, specifically the cable issue (six analog or one optical specifically.) It depends...how's that for an answer! Actually, it depends on your player and preamp/receiver. I take it since you knew enough to ask the question in the first place, you're familiar with the copy protection involved with both DVD-Audio and SACD for that matter. They were originally not allowed to be sent digitally from the player to the preamp. I believe it's the way the labels wanted to try to put the copy genie back in the bottle that they lost from CDs. Anyways, unless you've got something like D-Link from Denon (for only their DVD and receiver) or even some FireWire units that talk the same encryption on both ends for digital it won't work. Me, I have to rely on the six audio RCA cables to get the signal from my Denon DVD player to the Outlaw Audio preamp. The normal digital cable I've got connected will not pass the DVD-Audio or SACD stream along from the player. Another case of me, the end user, being treated as guilty until proven innocent. But that's another story.
DTS CDs: I've found that the medium I use, either DVD or redbook CD, is rather irrelevant when it comes to providing a DTS stream to my preamp- it likes both equally well, and recognizes them identically as DTS. The most important thing is the digital steam that's DTS encoded- once it leaves the player, it looks the same going across the wire. At least that's been my experience. That's why DTS originally could release DTS CDs- as long as their was a digital connection to a preamp that can decode DTS, a normal CD player works fine. In fact, I can also use the six channel input to play it back as my DVD player decodes the DTS stream internally and often do. My 14 year old CD player won't decode DTS, but with the digital out it can only pass the stream along to an outboard decoder.
As an aside, I can expand on this a bit. To augment my modest home studio monitors (two Event 20/20's), I bought an okay 5.1 speaker setup, the Alesis ProActive one that is more or less a rebranded Logitech but with six analog 5.1 inputs (important to me for mixing from my MOTU 828) and detachable speaker wire because I'm a prude that way. Anyway, out of the box and connected via one optical cable from my G5, I could get it to play anything except my DTS encoded tracks. Actually it played them- think white noise. Not good. I did some Googles and found out that the volume coming from the Mac had to be pretty much pegged to the max for the DTS decoder in the ProActive brain to recognize the digital stream. Once I did that, I got the DTS 5.1 soundtrack just fine.
Too bad about IM not being prompt. Like I said, I like the product and I've had no issues and I've needed no support as the product is self-documenting. It does one thing and does it well for me. Hopefully someone from their sales team will find this thread and convince the company to arrange at least a basic sales page with the website. As I said earlier, I did many Googles over the course of maybe a month and never found the right query to hit IM's page, and it was DTS that finally pointed me to their website.
DVD Studio Pro is worth it, if only to allow you to share your recordings to create DD mixes with pretty menus and the such. If IM ever gets off their butt it's worth at least a demo since you could encode and burn both DD and DTS tracks to the same DVD and see what you'd like better.
DVD-Audio is (was?) a good format (pet peeve- let me leave the TV off please- I hate having to navigate a menu to start track 1!!!) Of course there's enough confusion in the home theater world now that explaining to someone that you'll need six more cables isn't easy. Chicken and egg too- the software titles never panned out for the masses. And don't get me going with Sony screwing up yet again by not releasing stuff like the entire Pink Floyd catalog in SACD at launch of that format. I've heard enough 5.1 mixes of both classic and new recordings to know that I'm completely sold on the notion of surround music. Unless you like classical music, the choices are a bit thin of course. I do agree with you- hopefully the HD versions of DD and DTS will give the industry a kick in the backside to release more multichannel music.
Hmmm...encoding DTS via Virtual PC, eh? Shouldn't be too bad. Then again, if enough people from Apple who have the power to do something realizes that you, me, and at least a few others are interested but have to resort to a Windows solution for a multi-media codec, maybe they'll release such a beast. Then again, I'm one of the many waiting for a decent alternative to Quicken since Intuit screwed up the initial OS X version and never quite fixed it...
    Cheers!

  • Why can't I enter single user mode on my Mac Mini for an admin password reset?

    Hi,
I recently created a new user account for my mac and deleted the old one, not realising that this was the only account with admin priveleges. As such, I no longer have access to administrator priveleges, and cannot grant them to my new user account.
I have tried to boot in single user mode and recovery mode but neither command results in any reaction on the part of my computer.
This thread follows on from a previous, unrelated disscussion:
BDAqua: If you hold alt key at bootup do you see a lock in the middle?
    Yenots: No...what does this mean?
BDAqua: If it did, it would mean Firmware Password Protection was enabled, which prevents booting in other modes, so that's not the problem, are you using a wired Mac KB, or Windows KB?
Yenots: I'm using an 'Apple Keyboard with Numeric Keypad' [ http://store.apple.com/uk/product/MB110B/B/apple-keyboard-with-numeric-keypad-br itish ]
If you find me here BDAqua, hit me with your knowledge!
Any other contributions are welcome and, now we're under the right heading, will hopefully help other users who have encountered this problem.
    Thanks, Cristo

    Hi,
Thanks for the link to MacPilot, and the sexy screenshot. I found an archived version for 10.4 on the koingosw website. That solves getting into single user/safe mode. Though I'd be interested to see whether sudo nvram boot-args="-s" will result in single user boot.
As for creating administrator priveleges for my new user account, I've found a method which looks good:
         \single user mode\
         cmd-s
         \mount drive\
         mount -uw
         \open 'directory access'\
         lauchctl load /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.opendirectory.plist
         \list users\
         ls /Users
         \change password\
         dscl . passwd /Users/<username> <password>
I think that this method intends that if I change the root users password I'll be changing the administrator password  (as root is the only user with administrator priveleges), and subsequently be able to change my new user accounts priveleges using 'netinfomanager'. But I'm not 100%. Could you give me your opinion on this?
Furthermore, three keys 'L' 'O' and '(' aren't working on my keyboard, which means I can't try this until I find an intact keyboard to borrow. I was thinking maybe a mod version of the above instructions would work in terminal using sudo, so I could use the keyboard viewer to type the missing characters. If you have any ideas on constructing such a mod I would be interested to hear them.
Otherwise, Thank You for your help BDAqua! And enjoy your summer wherever you are.

  • HT202159 My purchased download get to around 25% download then mac asks for user password and download fails and I have to start again

I am currently downloading a purchased application from apple store, the application starts downloading then at some stage through the download the Mac asks for my user password to make changes, once I enter the password the download just disappears and I need to start again. I have tried using a different user and the same thing happens. I have also noticed that in purchases the application says to install but in the application page it says it is downloaded. I have spoken with apple support and they seem to be stunned and not sure what is going on! Help does anyone else have any suggestions, its an expensive app and I hope apple is prepared to refund if I cant download it.

When you're having problems with multiple user accounts, it can be an indication that the startup disk needs repairing or there's not enough free space on the disk to install apps.
Launch Disk Utility located in HD > Applications > Utilities
Select the startup disk on the left then select the First Aid tab.
    Click:  Verify Disk
If the repairs are necessary, instructions here >  Using Disk Utility to verify or repair disks
For disk space. Look at the bottom of the Disk Utility window. You'll see Capacity and Available
Make sure there's at least 15% free space.

    Hello there!
I am a new Mc Bok Pro user and had been using my mac since Sept, 2012 with no problem. Just recently however, I have been experiencing a Keychain access problem. Specifically, whenever I open the mac, it asks for my keychain password... Can I restore my mac to its condition before Jan. 18, 2014? What should I do?
    Thanks everyone!

This is only for Local Items key chain not Login Keychain.
    “Local Items” keychain prompt?
    Try this.

I had just updated my Mac to 10.6.1. When it finished, I had tried to open up Itunes but it says it requires 10.6.8 or later. When i had tried to update my mac it asked for my adiminstartor password. I dont know my password. Any way to reset it without using a disc?

    Sure there is.
    1. restart your computer in Single User Mode (by pressing Command + S during boot - see http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1492)
This will boot your OS X system in a kind of command line mode.
Note: this will not work if you have a Firmware password set.
    2. when in Single User Mode, enter the following command
    mount -uw /
to mount your OS X file system.
    3. now you can enter the following command
    passwd username
replacing "username" by your OS X user's short name. Then you will be prompted to enter the new password for that user. You will have to confirm that new password.
Note that you will not see any character showing when you enter the new password; this is expected behaviour.

  • On startup of Mac Mini running OS Mavericks login windows are invisible. Login is possible but there are no white boxes for username and password. Keyboard inputs also do not display.

Mac Mini with 2 Ghz Intel Core i7 running OS X 10.9.1. Recent problem with startup screen where I get a gray startup screen that is blank and does not show the login windows for username or password. Mousing over where they should be does provide a cursor change and I can click into the invisible window and login. Also, I can just type the information and hit enter and login without problems but the keystrokes do not appear either. This is not a big problem if I make sure that I type my login information correctly, but if I make a mistake it can be difficult make sure I am in the right place before I retype. Any ideas why the screen is just gray and does not show the windows? Once I type in the login info in the invisible windows and hit enter the computer starts up, loads finder, and runs without any other noticeable problems.

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you boot, and again when you log in.
Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a Fusion Drive or a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually login automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, reboot as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

  • Is there an alternative for Adobe Flash for Mac & Firefox

Running Mac OS 10.6.8 Snow Leopard with Firefox 13.0. Was notified that I needed to install Adobe Flash/Shockwave to see video content.
Have loaded and updated to the newest version as of last week but Firefox has become buggy, freezing up but my pointer will still move. I continually get requests from Flashplayer to store data on my machine. Continually get error messages that I have to click DISMISS and the it works normally.
Just a regular PIA. I have uninstalled Flashplayer and the problems disappear but I cannot access a lot of content, especially videos.
IS there any alternative for Mac?
    thanks,
    Rob

  • I recently loaded Mac OS X Snow Leopard and now cant save PDF files It ask me for my Owners password. Cant remember it

I recently Loaded Mac OS X Snow Leopard 10.6.3 on my MacBook. Now I cant print or save PDF files. I am asked for my "Owners Password" I bought this mac new, 3 years ago and dont remember my Owners password only my admin. How can I fix this?
    Please Advise
    Rich

That is your admin password. You might try this:
    To fix Home folder permissions
Open the Terminal application in the Utilities folder.  At the command line prompt enter or paste the following command line:
    sudo chown -R `id -un`:`id -gn` ~
Press RETURN.  You will be prompted to enter your admin password which will not be echoed.
    I would also do this:
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
And, consider downloading either Mac OS X v10.6.7 Update Combo or Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo and updating the system, but only after doing the above suggestions.

If you are printing via a Windows shared printer and it is the Windows user account that you are being prompted for then you can save this in the Keychain, as shown below.
