Mac and GPS compatibility!
I have a macbook with an intel core processor. I recently bought a GPS unit and realized that most, if not all, are only PC compatible. What do I need to make my GPS work with my mac? Hopefully I can keep it cheap too. Help!!!!!!!!
Your answer will very much depend on the software and hardware you have but don't mention. I suggest checking the manufacturer's website for forum pages as well as doing a Google search for "GPS forums". Most likely someone has already tried various solutions and either found an answer or determined that it won't work.
Good luck! bill

Encrypted forlders with Mac and PC compatibility?
I'm looking for a way to encrypt folders such that I can access the data from both my Mac and PC machines.
There are ways to do this from the command line (e.g., tar the folder and use OpenSSL to encrypt), but they are clunky. And the most common encryption tools (e.g., encrypted DMG on the Mac, WinZip/AES on the PC) are simply not compatible across platforms.
Any suggestions? That seems like a pretty good solution. PGP Desktop Home does what I want — creates virtual encrypted drives that are easy to access on both OS X and XP. The only downside is that I have to buy a $99 license for each platform. But if nothing better crops up it may very well be worth it.

CS5 Mac and Windows7 Compatibility?
What is the compatibility of CS5.5 or earlier files created on a Mac to CS5.5 on Windows 7? We are changing suppliers and need to move a large number of files from Mac to Windows 7. Will we be able to read/edit them easility? Anything we need to do to ensure this goes smoothly?
Thanks! The issue, unfortunately, is not the compatibililty of the InDesign documents themselves cross-platform, but rather, the fonts!
If you used OpenType fonts (either OpenType CFF such as those licensed by Adobe and others or OpenType TrueType) or Windows-format TrueType fonts with your InDesign documents on the Mac, then you should have no real problems going from Macintosh to Windows. If, however, your documents used Macintosh format Type 1, TrueType, or .dfont fonts, you will have issues to deal with since Macintosh Type 1 and TrueType fonts are stored in a Mac file's resource fork (as opposed to the data fork which is visible under Windows) and .dfonts are simply not supported under Windows at all.
For any such Macintosh Type 1, TrueType, or .dfonts, you will need to substitute the equivalent Windows format Type 1 or TrueType font or reformat the document preferably using OpenType fonts for the fonts that don't “cross over” directly. If you have such Type 1 or TrueType fonts, check your font vendor to see whether they can provide the equivalent Windows versions (same font name, same font outlines, same metrics although obviously a different format and file name); often they do and if you can get them, you could save quite a bit of reformatting work, albeit at the possible cost of relicensing the font(s).

Moving files to external drive - need Mac and PC compatibility in future
Hello -
I'm moving a client's video files to an external drive so they have the original files. I'm moving both the DV files (always usable with program that accepts DV files) and the Mac project files in a separate folder (in case they ever work on them in a mac - includes all the referenced files). I know they won't be able to open the latter on a PC but I'd still like to include.
BUT, can they get any external drive? If I plug it into my computer and move files, are they going to run into problems if they use then on a PC? Thinking about getting this one for them (they are paying but want a good price for them):
http://www.buy.com/prod/western-digital-500gb-my-book-essential-usb-2-0-external -hard-drive/q/loc/101/206409667.html
Thanks for your help -
AlexaDon't have a solution for you, but I did encounter a very similar bug.
I was moving files from one iMac's external drive to another's internal drive, using a drag'n'drop move command on a directory. The move generated an error message, maybe the same as what you saw (I'm not sure), then aborted the move. Only one small file had been moved, and the source directory was gone! Not in the trash. Mac OS X 10.4.8 on both systems, an iMac DV and an iMac 24. The external drive was formatted as "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)."
This sure seems to be a basic programming mistake. So, for me, it's back to doing 3 steps: copy, verify, delete. It's lousy not to be able to rely on proper execution of a basic command, but I've never won an argument with a computer. -
Are there any known problems with Macs and the mp3 playback in Adobe Connect ?
One user using an Apple Mac has complained of not being able to hear the mp3 sound playback in a meeting.
Is this a problem with Apple Mac and mp3 compatibility or is it an individual soundcard issue ?I use several Macs with Adobe Connect and I have even created MP3 files for playback in the room. Works fine on all my macs. It's basic Flash. Suggest they clear their browser cache, replace their host-add-in if using one. Run the audio wizard as well to make sure sound is working in Connect.
All of the Adobe Connect Government engineers use Macs all the time so we've never had an issue with MP3's. -
Font compatibility with Office (for Mac and Windows)
Hi,
Despite extensive searching, I'm struggling with a font compatibility issue between my Mac and my colleagues' PCs. The main points in order:
The fonts work correctly on both my Mac and other PCs.
The font in question is HelveticaNeueLT Std, rolled up into which are several different weights. The files are OTF files. The same files install without any problems on all the computers in question (and show up in Font Book). And the font can be used successfully:
- in Keynote, I select Helvetica Neue LT Std, and underneath choose whichever weight I want
- on PCs, the font and weight can be selected from the drop-down list in MS Office.
- in Office for Mac 2016 (Preview), I cannot select the font from the drop-down list, but can hit Cmd+T, and then select the appropriate font and weight under 'Latin text font'. What is odd is that in the dropdown list, only a particular weight/typeface is shown:
As this is a preview version, I wouldn't expect Office to work perfectly just yet...
When a file is created on a PC, it works fine on my Mac.
Every file I have attempted to open that was created on a PC, and using these fonts, works fine. The fonts display correctly (i.e. including the correct weights), and I can work with the document without any problems. The only odd bit: sometimes in the dropdown box on my Mac it then says (null):
Whereas at other times, the font name shows correctly:
Both of those examples were created using the 'Thin' weight of HelveticaNeueLt Std. I can't see any pattern as to what causes this inconstency.
The problem is that what I create on my Mac shows incorrectly on a PC.
If I create anything using Office 2016 or Keynote, selecting the preferred weight as described above, it shows just fine on my Mac. But when I send the PPTX file to a PC, all weights look identical (it looks as though the PC has just displayed everything in a standard weight). This is the problem I am trying to solve.
To try to get around this, I tried the process of removing the Helvetica/Helvetica Neue .dfont files that come with the Mac - but this didn't work and caused several other problems. Besides, the font I'm trying to get to use as intended has a different name.
All help would be greatly appreciated - my thanks in advance.
JohnThanks Kappy and apologies if it is inappropriate - but just to clarify, my main question is whether fonts used in Keynote should be compatible with other software (in this case Office running on Windows). The Office for Mac Preview is a bit of a red herring but I thought it should be mentioned.
I tried to clarify my first post, but it didn't work. What I wanted to add was simply whether Keynote handles fonts in a way that other pieces of software struggle to read - despite the font itself working perfectly in both environments. -
Web page compatibility between Mac and Windows
Hi, I was wondering if anyone has had any compatibility issues with opening a Java based webpage on a Mac. The web page works in Internet Explorer and Firefox on my VMware Fusion, but I cannot seem to get it to work on my mac directly. The page is a user interface for an Alcatel-Lucent networking device, so unfortunately I don't have many details. The user guide specifies for Windows to disable "next-generation Java Plug-in" in the Java control panel, but I wasn't sure how to do this on a mac. I tried using the IE Tab plug-in on Firefox on the Mac to see if that might help, but I just received a message that I was missing plug-ins, but Firefox wouldn't specify which plug-in?? If anyone has seen issues with some pages not working on the Mac, but working on Windows please let me know.
Thanks,
EricIETab does not work on Firefox on the Mac because there is no IE natively on your Mac, and that extension was designed solely for use in Windows.
The reference to the 'Next-Generation Java Plugin' is also a Windows only issue. If you wish to review your Java Preferences, do a Spotlight search for Java Preferences and you should see it in the Applications results.
Lucent has long been associated with Windows only hardware since the advent of the 'WinModem'. Hopefully you aren't stuck with a Windows specific device. -
i am looking to make the switch from pc to mac and have been eyeing the MBP 13". I would like to know whether it is fine to add RAM and SSD myself? any compatibility or warranty problems? what brand/type of RAM and SSD is the best fit? thank you.
Chamar wrote:
I'm possibly wrong here but I suspect opening a brand new MBP to add parts yourself will void the warranty. It is probably in the small print. I certainly would not risk it for an expensive Apple product.
Some (Windows) laptops have easy access to memory and disk slots that do not necessitate taking the complete back cover off. However, Apple does not make life easy for you.
However, if you are going for a 'used' machine it is probably worth a try.
Not possibly, definitely wrong, Ram and Hard Drive are considered user replaceable and will not void the warranty if changed. -
File compatibility between CS 5.5 MAC and CS 5.5 PC?
We are currently a PC based shop with a few MAC's tossed here and there. I have been asked to verify the file compatibility between CS 5.5 MAC and CS 5.5 PC. Are the files fully compatible? i.e. can user A on a PC create an illustrator/photoshop/etc document which is then opened by user B on a MAC with no issues?
Thanks!Yes. For the programs you mentioned it has been forever this way and even for programs like Premiere Pro or Encore, that were platform-specific until recently, this is no longer an issue ever since CS5. Of course you will still have to take care of different handling for file paths on different platforms for externally linked files, but that's a different matter and nothing specific to Adobe...

Keynote Compatability with mac and pc
i made a commercial add that is about 59 seconds long. it is between 62 128 mb not sure. When I exported it I used the default settibg which is the first choice when you select exportt. The problem is is that it played quick when I checked it out after I published it into iweb, but other computers I checked it out on were slow. Also If a pc user goes to view commercial it won't play unless they have quick time. My questiopn is when exporting keynote is there a way to export it smaller and freindly for mac and pc. The other opption I was wondering about is if I shoulld upload it to a service and than use the enbeded code on the iweb project. The problem is I don't wany any youtube logo or addvertisment. Is there a service that will let upload and have the video embed exactly how you created it without looking like a tv screen. I wan'e it to look like a panaramic flash video. I am also using mobile me.
iOS devices are primarily designed to be synced with one computer only. See: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1474
If you manually manage your media, rather than automatically sync it, you can kind of do what you want.
If your two computers are both on the same network, use iTunes Home Sharing feature. -
USB Flash Drive Compatibility between Mac and PC?
Hi,
I own an iMac 2 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo 1 GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM and just got a new job where I'm using a PC. At work they all use flash drives to transfer data back and forth to computers etc. Would a flash drive (let's say a Kensington since that's the brand I've seen the most at work) that works in a PC at work be compatible with my iMac at home. I know Kensington makes them compatible for Mac and PC but just wondering how the data would transfer onto my Mac. Is it readable, does it depend what I'm transferring over?
Message was edited by: spiralgirl{quote} guy there said they haven't yet perfected the flash drives to switch between Mac and PC and work well so I was a little surprised at this. {quote}
That is pretty much a standard reply you get from someone that doesn't know anything about macs. I've used those things for years without any problems, but I have been using my ipod as a disk lately because I always have it with me. It's also another less thing I have to buy and carry around. -
I just installed Lion on my mac and now Safari will not open. Keep getting this message: Safari quit unexpectedly, it gives me an optionto reopen or just click ok. I click reopen and it gives me the same message, with a long report of information. Ran disk permissions repair and still does the same. I can't even figure out how to copy the report into this question. Please help!

What type of hard disk should I use if I want to use it on mac and windows?
Hey Forum,
I am using windows xp on my macbook (snow leopard). I came across some dealers who say that there are hard disks for mac only and for both mac and windows. So, I wanted to buy a hard disk so that I can use it both on mac and windows xp, so what type of hard disk should I use? Must I partition into 2?
or are there any harddisk in the market which is compatible for both mac and windows xp without screwing up the format(NTFS/Mac OS X Journaled)? Pls look into this matter and help me with it.
All of your replies and suggestions is much appreciated.
Thank you.
Ala.Run, don't walk, from that dealer! and never look back
Once in a very long while Apple will have customized firmware on drives, and it is possible to find SCSI/SAS or drives that are destined to be used with high end storage controllers.
But that is the exception that makes the rule.
SATA is SATA. Though.... there are now SATA III drives that don't work in XP, or that need a jumper, and Seagate and some drives have managed to deliver firmware that has caused trouble... and Apple has had to issue firmware updates to help compatibility.... -
I have installed the most recent version of Snow Leopard on my MAC, and I am trying to install Mountain Lion from the Apple Store. It will not install, because it says I do not have 2GB of memory, even though I have over 200GB available. Please help.
Welcome to the Apple Support Communities
One thing is the memory, and another thing is the hard disk space. You are telling me that you have 200 GB of free space on the hard disk, but the App Store is telling you that you have to install 2 GB of memory or more on your Mac if you want to upgrade to OS X Mountain Lion.
First of all, open > About this Mac > More Info, and copy "Model Identifier" here, so we can know what Mac you have got and how much memory you can install.
We recommend to buy the memory in OWC or Crucial (Crucial is cheaper and offers the same compatibility warranty as OWC) because you won't probably have any problem with the memory you buy there -
Sharing Linksys Wireless Print Server with MAC and PC - How to do?
I have lost the capability to share a printer on my network by using the Linksys Wireless Print Server-model number WPS54G -V2. Prior to having to return my previous Print Server on an RMA, I was able to use the MAC and PCs on my network. I have a PowerGook G4 with MacOS X 10.4.10. I also have a Airport Extreme Base Station V5.6. The printer on the network that is being shared is an Epson Stylus Photo 820. Recently, when trying to reconfigure the network, I updated the software on the Airport Extreme...so I think after that, I am no longer able to share this printer using current network configuration. As information, I will share how I got the network to share the printer BEFORE I had to replace the previous Print Server and BEFORE I updated the Airport Extreme. Please see this link:
http://www.macosxhints.com/article.php?story=20050406151311940
Even though this was for a different type of Print Server, this worked for me.
When reconfiguring the new Print Server, I contacted Linksys...as had some difficulty until I found out how to assign a static IP to the new Print Server. When trying to talk to them about the Mac issue, and sharing the printer, they shared this link with me...which may be helpful to some, but I found that this does not work for me...
http://www.macosxhints.com/article.php?story=20060404021600193
I have been trying to work through the issue, but feel I may now have some compatibility issues between the Airport Extreme and the Epson printer.
Further details are that I use 10.0.1.78 for the assigned IP address for the Print server. My router (which is the Airport address) is 10.0.1.1. I have tried IPP printing option, LPD printing option...and IPP printing at least returns a status on the Print Server as "printing" as opposed to "idle". I have checked the Print status on the Mac, and I have received two (2) different error messages as to why the print job failed. They are:
"the process "picwpstops" stopped unexpectedly with status 1"
and
"the process "rastertoprinter" stopped unexpectedly with status 1"
The latter happens when I follow the instructions on the second link I attached on this topic...with the only change being that I select IPP printing as opposed to LPD printing.
Anyone that has any insight into HOW to configure the mysterious settings for Mac OS printing so that it can be compatible with a Wireless Print Server, please feel free to comment. In the meantime, I am thinking that the links above could help some people...just not me at this point given my current configuration and versions of software/firmware and perhaps the printer I am using.
Greatly appreciate your consideration, and any suggestions to anyone that might understand what these error messages mean when checking the printer status after sending a file for printing.
Thank you1. No, you don't have to make a bootable clone.
2. If you use the drive for a bootable backup, then you cannot use the drive for other types of storage unless you partition the drive and make more than one volume.
3. No, it will not try to boot the computer. You must designate the startup volume using Startup Disk preferences.
If you wish to use the drive on both a Mac and a PC, then either you make two partitions - one for Mac and the other for the PC or you must format the entire drive using FAT32 so the drive can be used for read//write by both operating systems. If you do this then you cannot use the drive for a bootable backup nor can you use it with Time Machine.
FAT32 is slower for read/write on the Mac than using Mac formatting.
Optimally, I would suggest you partition the drive into two volumes. One volume formatted for the Mac and the other formatted FAT32.
You can send files from a PC to a Mac and vice-versa using File Sharing. Select Mac Help from the Finder's Help menu and search for "file sharing" or "sharing" to find help articles. Also see,

Hi all, Is there any simple way to get the number of rows in a ResultSet object before iterating it? Right now I have to iterate it the ResultSet object first and then I can determine the rows.... Is there any faster method? Thanks.

If corrective changes are going to be needed to the websites, it will be a time-consuming job. I feel this must be a weakness in MF as it doesn't occur with other browsers.
