Mac and nas connected to router via ethernet

Hi,
I have movies and music stored on my nas which is hooked up to itunes on my mac over wifi. This all works quite nicely but when I want to watch movies the wifi connection just isn't quick enough so the movie doesn't play properly. I have connected the nas directly to my mac and this way it works perfectly, but I want my nas plugged into my router and also my mac plugged into the router so I haven't got to keep plugging and unplugging cable in and out of nas.
I assumed that if both the mac and the nas are plugged into the router then they would be on the same network so then i should be able to access the nas data via the cable rather than the wifi solving the issue however this encounters problems and doesn't enable me to connect to the internet.
Any ideas?

Hi, thanks for coming back to me. I certainly haven't installed any security onto my mac, does it have anything built in that could be blocking it? Regarding the firewall; am I right in saying that this would be built into the router and if so should I be able to adjust it through the admin pages?
Thanks again

  • HT3728 every time my iMac sleeps or restarts it loses the connection to airport express and i must reset and connect with router via ethernet cable.

Every time my imac sleeps or restarts it loses the wireless connection with my airport express (used for streaming music). I then have to disconnect the airport express from my stereo, bring it to my router, connect it to my router with ethernet cable and reset the wireless connection. Even with my airport express  in the same room as my router Airport Utility cannot find it until i plug in an ethernet cable, so i do not think this is an issue with my wireless network. Router is a newer netgear.

Connect time capsule via ethernet to Mac for back-up only. Is it possible without internet connection ?

    Hi Bob,
I'm not certain the post I sent was posted correctly, as I added it as a reply to a 3-year old thread. Since this is a recently-active thread, though not specific to the issue at hand, I thought I'd post again:
Three years ago you helped me set up a roaming wireless network in my home. It's been rock-steady and I'm forever grateful to you for the time and guidance you gave me. I'd now like to swap out my AirPort Extreme base station for a time capsule. As I understand it, I should be able to unplug the base station and replace it with the TC without problem, so long as I use all the same settings on my TC... network name, security protocol, password, etc. Given the complexity of my network, I thought I should check with you first for any advice you might have. I don't want to set up a new network or make any changes to the existing one-- with the exception of using the TC in place of the AE. I'm already using Time Machine for backups. As a refresher, my current setup has the AE as base station and 3 expresses hard-wired with Ethernet connections elsewhere in my home. I have a 4th express set up wirelessly to use with my stereo system at the front of the house. All AXs are 'n's and are set up, as per your instructions, in Bridge mode to extend the existing network. I'm running the most updated version of Mavericks on my MBPro. Any suggestions you might have will be, as always, very much appreciated! Sincerely, Phyllis Sommers

  • HT1515 do you need to connect the airport express to a router via ethernet or can it do it using wireless?

do you need to connect the airport express to a router via ethernet or can it do it using wireless?

There are 3 Apple routers....AirPort Express, AirPort Extreme and Time Capsule. Details here:
    http://www.apple.com/compare-wifi-models/
Do you have one of these products in the living room?
If no, you can only use the AirPort Express by connecting to the router in the living room using an Ethernet cable at all times.

thanks for the info. I found apple utilty software on this windows 7  PC but I guess it is not required for sharing  internet on exisiting apple extreme. Am I correct that I can remove this apple software?

  • I need to backup TC's drive. How do I do this to WD MyBook Live connected to TC via Ethernet?

I need to backup TC's drive. How do I do this to WD MyBook Live connected to TC via Ethernet?

P.S. Solved it exactly the other way around (compared to the original intent). 4 simple steps:
    1. Made WD's MyBook Live my primary file server.
    2. Made WD's MyBook Live my backup location for Time Machine (moving to it made me reconfigure TM on all home Macs = new full backups and no old data left - but I didn't really need old backups - they were sitting there just in case).
Added bonus - on MyBook Live it is easy to create shares (so that now my general file server is separate from my photo archive and software archive, etc.) - while on TC I had to partition the drive.
    3. Moved all files from TC to MyBook Live.
    4. Erased all data from TC - so that its drive is clean.
    5. Instructed MyBook Live to automatically backup itself to TC.
    Job done.

    Hello.
    I have wi-fi bridge between two routers TP-LINK WR841ND.
The name of this technology - WDS.
HP Laser JET 1536 dnf MFP connect to one of this routers (copper).
Second device (my NETBOOK) connect to second router (WiFi).
I have good communication between NETBOOK and HP Laser JET 1536 dnf MFP via WiFI-bridge.
In usual case NETBOOK can find (and can Ping) network printer and make a print some files.
But my Ipad or Iphone can't find HP Laser JET 1536 dnf MFP (using Eprint). Ipad and iphone connect
    to router across WiFi.
    Please, help!

Are you using the ePrint Mobile App, the ePrint Printer Control App, or just trying to send an email to the printer's ePrint email address?
    Does AirPrint work?

  • "Connected to internet via Ethernet" ... but won't work

Looks like I have it set up correctly. Says "Connected to internet via Ethernet", yet I am getting absolutely no internet. Where have I gone wrong?
Oddly enough, it even says this when there is no ethernet cable plugged into it and is blinking amber.
    What is going on?

Assuming you have a cable or DSL modem cabled to the Airport Express ethernet port... pull power to both the modem and the Airport Express for five minutes (or up to thirty minutes if you can stand it). Then plug power into the modem and wait a minute. Then plug power into the Airport Express and wait a minute. Hopefully your connection with your ISP will now have reset, and the Airport Express will get an IP address and show a solid green status light.

  • Mac Pro no longer connects to network via ethernet.

Since coing back from Thanksgiving break and my Mac Pro 1,1 will no longer connect to my router through via ethernet.  This means I can neither connect to internet nor connect to devices like my laptop and Apple TV.  Strangely, I can still connect to my Mac Pro from these devices to share screen, play audio/video through iTunes, etc.  In Network Settings, I still have a green dot, and I still get an IP address assigned (though I usually use a fixed IP).  If I go into my router (Netgear WNDR4000), the router tells me that the Mac Pro 1,1 is connected to the network.
I already have tried the following solutions:
    · Restarting router, modem, and computer
    · Making a new location in Network Settings
    · Trying different ethernet ports
    Please Help!

Your local LAN runs through your router.
All your ethernet  ports, and your modem and router, should be behind and filtered from excess current. That means a UPS generally. And run input line thru UPS (coax) first, then run RJ45 back through UPS again (there can still be excess surge or current on the line).
Modems and routers can be compromised by surge outage or storm. So can ethernet  ports.
You have two ethernet ports and you tried with both also.
What you did not do that I would have added is SMC Reset / Reset NVRAM/PRAM.
This is what I have had for the last year, very nice and stronger  signals thruout the house.

  • Mac Pro and G4 won't talk via ethernet

Hi, I know this is child's play for many of you, but I'm at a dead end. I'm trying to network my new Mac Pro with my G4 MDD /dual 1.25/ V.10.2.8. I made sure that file sharing is on in both Macs, that the ethernet ports are active, and that I have a good quality cable. When I try and access the G4 from the mac pro, from Go>connect to server,I get a connection failure window. And from connect to server>browse>network, the G4 shows up but the MPro locks up when I try and connect.
When I try and access the MPro from the G4,via go>connect to internet, I get an error-36 message. And in both cases I'm using either the computer name .local or the ip address.
The macs see each other but won't connect. Any thoughts or experience with this problem?
And finally, I'm really not sure if I'm going about this the right way. My goal is to use the G4 to drive SCSI devices I use for work, and as a file server.
And since the G4 has multiple drives, I don't know if I'll be able to access/see them all via direct ethernet. To see all of the G4 drives from the mac pro, is a direct connect sufficient or do I need a different approach?
    Thanks in advance,
    KKnographer

Thanks for the tip on applejack. Disc Warrior has been good to me but I thought I'd give AJ a try. I downloaded and ran it in the G4 to clear any potential issues. Afterward, I still could not connect with the G4, via either the IP or the computer name.local.
So I went back to the computer store and picked up a crossover cable. Same price as the patch cable I was using, and I'm aware that it's not technically required, but I figured "why not?" So I installed the crossover cable and I still couldn't connect at first, via Go>connect to server>IP address or name.
Then I tried Go>connect to server>browse>network and I could see the G4 as before. Previously, when I went this route and hit "connect" to see shares, the MPro locked up. This time I held my breath, hit "connect", had to log in as registered, Icould see my HD's in the G4, selected and opened. TaaDaaa! Saints be praised!
As a test to finalize this thread and help out any other poor soul in my position, I dragged the volume icons to the trash restarted the G4 after switching back to the original patch cable. No connection was possible via any route including the network browser. Then I reconnected the crossover cable and it works fine so long as I go in through the network browser and log in.
So the fundamental problem seems to have been the cable. Whether the original patch cable is bad, or whether or not I really need the crossover I don't know, but the crossover works for me and the patch didn't.
Thank you all for your assistance!

  • Cannot Connect MacBookPro to Router via Ethernet

I just bought a new modem/router and attempted to set it up using this MBP running on Mavericks via ethernet cable.  Each attempt when I typed the modem address into Safari, the blue line stuck and the MBP could not connect.  To avoid any conflicts, I turned wifi off.
I then tried my wife's MBP which runs OS 10.7.5 and this worked with no problems at all.  I then went back to using my Mavericks, but it would still not connect.
    Can anybody offer a solution?
    Thanks,

On the Mavericks Mac you could try deleting the existing Ethernet connection in System Preferences>Network using the '-' button. Save the changes and then create a new Ethernet connection using the '+' sign.

  • How do I connect a PC via ethernet to my new Airport Extreme router?

I just replaced an old Actiontec router with a new Apple Airport Extreme router to work with my Verizon FIOS service. Connection to all Apple products via ethernet or wireless works OK, however I cannot get the PC up and running via its ethernet connection to the Airport Extreme. Any help would be much appreciated.

If your other devices are working then it is probably the PC's IP configuration.
First, make sure that the PC is actually connected to the Extreme by verifying the lights are on at the Ethernet ports on the PC and the Extreme.
If you are using DHCP to manage the IP addresses then make sure that the PC is configured to "Obtain IP Address Automatically" for both IP versions 4 and 6.
When I replaced my Linksys w/ an Extreme I forgot that I had a couple devices configured with static (manual) IPs.  My old one used the "192.168.1.nn" and my Extreme defaulted to "10.0.1.nn". Once i converted all the static IPs to the correct subnet then all was good.

  • Problem for connecting my computer to my wireless router via ethernet cable

I have a wireles router model BEFW11S4. I have three computers connected to the router by wireless. All these connection work well. I have also a computer connected to the same router via an ethernet cable. This connection does not work, I cannot access internet with that computer. What can I do to correct the problem?

First off, you need to ascertain if the network card in the computer that is not working is capable of sending and receiving legitimate packets.
Best thing to do is try and connect this machine directly to your Internet Service Provider modem and see if it works.
If it doesn't, first you need to check if your computer is capable of acquiring an IP address automatically (See below for details).
If it is setup to acquire an IP address automatically, but still does not work you either need to find someone who knows how to test network hardware for you or you could try installing a different network card in your computer.
There are 2 ways a computer can receive an IP address. A typical way is for your router to provide one to the workstation using something called DHCP. The other method requires you to know the exact IP addressing required on your LAN such that your workstation when manually configured with an IP address knows where to send it's packets to get out to the Internet.
To check if the computer that does not work is configured to "automatically" receive an IP address from your router, do the following:
    1. click on Start
    2. click on Control Panel
    3. double-click on Network Connections
    4. right single-click on "Local Area Connection"
    5. click on Properties
    6. Scroll down the list until you see "Internet Protocol (TCPIP)"
    and then double-click that item
    7. Make sure "Obtain an IP address automatically" and "Obtain DNS server address automatically" are checked.
This setting allows the workstation to send a broadcast message looking for a DHCP server which can assign an IP address to the workstation. Your router typically would have a DHCP server configured for providing IP addresses. The typical home-based routers can be configured to run a DHCP server or not. Chances are that your wireless computers are automatically acquiring an IP address from your router and therefore it should work on Ethernet connections as well.
It is possible for something to be not working inside your router that would prevent the DHCP server from distributing IP addresses only on the Ethernet connections. If this is the case you would have to acquire a new router.
There is more that can be looked at, but this is where you need to start.
