Mac and PC on Airport

I am trying to connect a PC and Macbook Pro to the internet using the airport express. I have a cable broadband ISP. The PC was "wired" (basic modem/ethernet direct to PC). Everything worked fine. Installed the airport, followed set-up. The Mac recognized the airport, but not the internet connection. Re-set the modem and the airport... Mac recognizes the airport and internet, but now the PC doesn't. Any solutions to get both computers on the web? It is not necessary for the PC to be wireless, I just assumed it would be easier. I've been troubleshooting for hours.

I use Norton Internet Security for my PC, so I am not sure on how it works for McAfee, but the process should be similar.
Launch McAfee and look for something that looks like "trusted IPs" or "firewall settings." Somewhere in there is a place to put the IP address of your Mac in there to allow it to access the PC.
Sorry I can't be more specific, but the McAfee website is a mess.

  • Connecting both Mac and PC by Airport

    Hi,
I want to connect my G4 quicksilver to a Windows XP PC but don't know the best way to do it.
The purpose is to share all the information I have on my LaCie 200Gb external hard drive with a PC user. I'm looking at using the Airport Extreme and although I know I need an airport card for the mac do I need one for PC or is it better to connect via Ethernet.
How is the best way to connect the two computers?
    Thanks
    Kirsty

If possible, it is always better to connect via ethernet - particularly when file sharing between computers on a LAN is involved. Connecting the PC to the Base Station's ethernet LAN port, while the Mac connects wirelessly, is acceptable - but clearly will be much slower than if both computers were to be cabled.
To set up file sharing between Mac and PC see http://www.efelix.co.uk/tech/3001.html
To share the contents of the external hard drive connected to the Mac, use the free application SharePoints.

  • Connected Mac and PC to Airport Extreme

I have an Airport Extreme and a cable modem/internet connection. I have the Airport set up via Ethernet to the cable modem and my iMac(my Mac is old and does not have an airport or wireless card), but the PC will not connect or get an IP address from the Extreme if I put security on the wireless network. I have found guides that tell you you need to get the full hexadecimal key to enter into the PC as the password but am unable to find it on my Mac.
    Please help.

2- I tried just connecting an ethernet cable directly between my Mac and PC and set up static IP on both but for some reason it does not work, but it works fine via the router, could this be because direct connection requires a crossover ethernet cable ?
How old is the PC and does it use gigabit.. with gigabit you do not need crossover cables.
However the two computers can get confused about negotiated speeds.. so set exact speed on each computer.
Set both to gigabit. Full duplex and see how that goes.. assuming a good quality it cable it should work.
If the max speed of the PC is 100mbit then reduce the speed in the Mac to the same.
If you do this kind of setup you also need to set static IP in the correct range .. but you need to NOT set gateway and DNS in the PC.. in the Mac on the other hand I have found they tend to like the gateway and DNS set.. but you use the same one as the airport extreme uses.
1- Is there any latency added when computers are communicating to each other, in my case a Mac and PC, via the airport extreme ?
No, the latency on ethernet networks is tiny.. and transfer speeds on gigabit are identical .. using the router is much easier than messing about with direct cable connections.

  • Connecting Mac and PC to Airport Extreme

Trying to migrate some files from a PC to a Macbook and am having trouble. After many failed attempts, it seems to me the best way is to connect both the PC and the Mac directly to the Airport Extreme. I am asking if this is possible, will it work to move the files from the PC to the Mac and how to set it up correctly? Below are details on setup now, problems and various solutions, although just showing me how to attach both a PC and a Macbook to the Airport Extreme, is my primary need now.
NOW - The PC connects directly with Ethernet Cable to Airport Extreme. Airport Extreme connects directly to the ISP provided Cable Modem. The PC also connects directly to a Printer with a printer cable.
The Mac connects by Wireless to Airport Extreme (and Internet) and to to the Printer.
This arrangement is a result of the PC, more or less, falling apart. The PC wireless connection usually will not connect or fails, therefore I opted to use the Ethernet connection. By necessity, a D-Link is used in place of the two broken USB connections on the PC. Due to condition of PC, I prefer to leave everything as it is since it's working so far.
POSSIBLE OPTIONS - When I looked at various ways to move the files from PC to Mac, it seemed best to use an external hard drive, but I've not tried that yet since I am not sure how to change the drive's PC format to the Mac format without losing, in the process, all the files copied from the PC. I bought a new external drive that is supposed to work on a PC or a Mac, except that, with this PC,there is no assurance the drive will work. Two others I used as backup drives no longer can be found by the PC.
I tried to set up a network with the PC and Mac, but never succeeded.
Also, tried the file sharing instructions and never succeeded in that. In both cases the Mac just did not show up on the PC network places, nor does the PC show up on the Mac, despite my following instructions as well as I could.
That is why I would like to take what seems to use a more direct route to get the files I want from the PC to the Macbook.
Thanks in advance for any help you can provide.

  • Shared Libray between Mac and PC via Airport

Hello, I'm new to the forum, and apologize if this has been posted before (thought I couldn't find any existing topics).
I've had my iTunes library on an external hard drive directly connected to my Mini for some time. I recently purchased an Airport and hooked the hard drive up to it to share the files between the Mac and an HP running Windows 7.
I've gotten iTunes set-up on the Mini, and can view the Shared Library on the PC. However, if I try to open the library on the PC, I cannot see the library when opening iTunes. If I browse to the hard drive through My Computer I can see the library, XML, PDF export of albums, etc. It's only when I open iTunes and select Choose Library that I can only see the folders.
I'm assuming I can do this (maybe I'm wrong), but don't know how. Can anyone help? Thanks in advance.

I suggest you post your question on the Microsoft Mac Office forums as that's where the Office gurus hang out...

  • Sharing ONE iTunes Library on TWO Macs (Mac and MacBook) Using Airport Extr

I did put this thread in the Airport Extreme forum, but I have moved it here on advice.
I realise that this has probably been answered a million times on this forum, so I apologize in advance. I recently bought an Airport Extreme and connected to my wireless home network, my internet speeds have increased (don't ask me why because I don't know) and I am really happy with the results, I have just one issue which I am hoping to resolve.
I have a iMac in my study, and a MacBook which I use all around the house. I have an external hard drive connected to the AEBS which has all of my files on, including my iTunes music. The problem is, I download music on both computers, and if I download a track or a movie onto the itunes library of one, it doesn't appear on the other computer, even though both iTunes apps are pointing to the same folder on the external hard drive.
The question I have is, how do I make both itunes libraries share the same library, so if I add a song on my mac it will automatically appear on my macbook when i use it next.
Both macs are fully up to date, and running Leopard
    Many Thanks
    JC

This is really an iTunes question. How do you configure a remote library which updates properly for all clients?
I suggest that you ask in the iTunes discussion area.

  • Setup wireless network for mac and pc with Airport Express?

    Mac Mini/OSX/10.8.2/Airport Express
    Question,
I have my AIrPort Express setup for my Mac Mini and I have dell computer that I want to share the wireless network. Is it possible to setup a wireless network with my mini and the pc using only the AirPort Express? Is the Airport Express a wireless router?
    Thanks,

If your Mac Mini is connecting to the Express using wireless, then this confirms that the device is working correctly.
The Express is a wireless router that can support up to 10 wireless connections, so your Dell computer should be able to connect assuming that its wireless card is working correctly, and the Dell indentifies the network and enters the correct wireless network password.
If you are having difficulty with the Dell PC connecting, this Windows troubleshooting document might help:

  • Found a fix for printing from Mac and PC using Airport Express!

I hope this helps somebody else because it's taken me hours and hours of frustration to trip over this solution. I have a MacBook, Airport Express and a Windows XP PC. Internet worked fine but I could not print form the PC via airport. I tied all the various links from iFelix (thanks to him for what sure seems like a lot of work to help others) but they didn't work. Here's what did...
To setup a printer using the Bonjour Printer Wizard:
    1. Download the Bonjour for Windows installation package from the
    Apple site http://www.apple.com/macosx/features/bonjour/.
    2. Install Bonjour for Windows by launching the BonjourSetup.exe file from the folder where place it was downloaded.
    3. Start the Bonjour Printer Wizard either by clicking its icon on the desktop or by selecting Start -> Programs -> Bonjour -> Bonjour Printer Wizard.
    4. Follow the installation steps until the Install Bonjour Printer screen appears.
    5. In the Install Bonjour Printer screen, select Generic in the Manufacturer list and then Generic / Postscript in the Model list. This step is the same for any printer model you have.
    6. Follow the rest of installation steps.
The key is the Generic and Generic/Postscript settings. I also set up the Parallels program on my Mac. These instructions come from their documentation. It's the only thing I've found that works. Hope it helps some of you!

  • Annoying!: Sharing an external HDD to a Mac and PC via Airport Extreme

I use an Airport Extreme to connect wirelessly to the Internet. I have no problem accessing the Internet with either the house's Mac or PC.
I have an external HDD connected to the AE via USB and can access that via the Mac only.
I wish to be able to access the external HDD wirelessly via the PC. The external HDD has 2 partitions, FAT32 and NTFS.
Via Airport Utility I have found my way to File Sharing under the menu, Disks. I have just selected "Share disks over WAN".
Do I need to configure the Windows File Sharing also?
This problem has bothered for me some time and I have been unable to find anything on the Internet.

I wish to be able to access the external HDD wirelessly via the PC.
Please review the following Apple Support article: AirPort: How to mount an AirPort Extreme USB hard disk volume in Mac OS X and Windows
The external HDD has 2 partitions, FAT32 and NTFS.
The AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBSn) will only "see" the FAT32 partition as it will not recognize partitions formatted for NTFS.

  • Mac and PC to AirPort Extreme

I'm hoping you can help me out and explain to me what the heck i'm trying to do.
    what i have
    - desk top PC
    - MacBook Pro lap top
    - airport extreme
    - external hard drive
    - airport express
what i'd like to do is hardwire my desk top PC to the airport extreme and also have an external hard drive hooked up to the airport extreme
I'm hoping to do a few different things on the hard drive, first store all my photos and music on it and second use it to back up both the PC and the mac. WILL THIS WORK?
The other question I have is, how do you have one library of music (ie the hard drive) and have multiple computers run itunes from it?
if I do store all my music on the hard drive how does each computer run itunes from that one central spot ??? what about adding songs, or updates or syncing my ipod, does it need to be via one computer only or can i do it via both computers?
    thanks for your help

I'm hoping to do a few different things on the hard drive, first store all my photos and music on it and second use it to back up both the PC and the mac. WILL THIS WORK?
Yes. If you're using backup software, that software needs to be capable of backing up to a network drive.
how do you have one library of music (ie the hard drive) and have multiple computers run itunes from it?
Launch iTunes with the Option(Mac) or Shift(Win) key held down and point it there.

  • Connecting MAC and PC to Airport Express

We have a MacBook and an HP PC--
Is the AE print server compatible with an HP C3100 printer (didn't see it on the iFelix list)?
If so, will the PC be able to see it on the network?
    Thanks for your help--

Is the AE print server compatible with an HP C3100
printer (didn't see it on the iFelix list)?
The HP driver does not work, it may work on the Mac with another Gimp driver, but this does not always work.
    Use the process outlined here:
HP Printers (and others) not on compatibility list and Airport Extreme Printing
    http://www.ifelix.co.uk/tech/1300.html
Using the Gimp-Print drivers, you will need to choose another driver, start with the PhotoSmart P1100 and see if that works.
If so, will the PC be able to see it on the network?
Actually you may find it easier to print from the PC... and it may work from the PC even it doesn't from the Mac.

  • Mac and PC sharing airport express - help!

This is possible, right? I have successfully set up the airport express from my ibook, but now i'm trying to connect a PC with Windows XP to it and it's not picking up the wireless signal. Suggestions please?

    Mike
Rather a late follow-up, but I'm hunting for clues.
I'd be interested to know how you managed to enter 26 hexa characters for the password. I have an XP machine I'm trying to connect to an ABS. I first tried entering the 13 char Ascii password. It entered, but didn't produce the connection. Then I got the 26 char hexadecimal version from Aiport Admin, and tried to enter it. I got to 13th char, then the password field refused to accept any more characters. I thought for a moment the keyboard had died. No. The password field just refused to take more than 13 characters.
So, what's the secret to getting all 26 in as a hexa password? In which window/screen could you enter the password?
Problem machine is running XP Home with SP2.

    Ken

  • O2Broadband,  iPhone and a Mac and also an airport

Just received my new 02 wireless box. One (and only) problem was to get it to talk to my iPhone correctly. It found the wireless box OK but the WiFi just seemed to keep dropping off.....
If you find you have the same issues then maybe try.......
    1) Open your Safari browser and go to your wireless box admin area (mine was http://192.168.1.254)
    2) Choose: Home Network > Interfaces > WLAN: O2wireless73F4D1
    3) Next, go to the top right of the page and click "configure"
    4) Go to the "channel" option and change it from "Auto" to "manual"
    5) choose another channel - I believe the factory default is "1" so I am using "11"
    6) Move down the page to "WEP Encryption Key"
    7) This is the password iPhone requires - enter it into your phone
    8) If you are configuring an airport, then I understand you need to add a "$" in front of the encryption key to make it work
    9) Hit apply
    10) Well, it worked for me!
    good luck

  • HT3728 No status light at all on Airport/Time capsule. I can plug internet cable directly into bac of my MAC and have internet access no problem. Is my Airport dead and need to be replaced??

I have NO status light on my Airport/Time Machine, I unplugged the internet connection from back of Airport and plugged directly into my MAC and am able to get to the internet just fine.
The Airport is almost 6 years old
Is my Airport dead and just need to get a new one??

Is my Airport dead and just need to get a new one??
Unfortunately, yes.  On the upside, your Time Capsule lasted about twice as long as normal.

  • I need to reset my time capsule/airport every day - time capsule has green light but I don't see any wifi signal on my mac and other computers.

as many of you do, I use time capsule as airport, too...
It worked fine for 6 months or so after I bought the new time capsule. (I bought it in September 2012.)
Since the beginning of this year, I had to reset, and power off and plug it in almost every week, then now I need to reset and power off and back on again every day...
When I first set up the time capsule, I followed the instruction with the manual.
But, now I am so lost and don't want to reset every day for wifi connection.
Anyone has problem like me or knows how to solve this issue?
    Please help..
I have MacBook Pro OS X 10.8.4 & my roommates have PCs. (just in case if it helps...)

For PC it is important the wireless has names that are compatible.. short.. like 10 characters.. but 2-20 is fine. no spaces.. and pure alphanumeric.
Use WPA2 personal only.. with pure alphanumeric password .. again 10-20 characters should be fine.
The latest firmware is a dud. Go back to 7.6.1
Open the airport utility.. click on the TC and holding the option key click the actual version number..
Go back to 7.6.1 is simple.. just select it and away it will go.. ignore future requests for upgrade.. you can also tell the utility not to check weekly for updates. You will need 5.6 utility for this I think..
    So do the firmware downgrade.
Then do a factory reset and follow the name information above.. for TC name as well btw.. wireless name/s and disk share name.. which by default is data and that is fine.
    So some instructions in...
    The Factory Reset.
    Power down the TC.
Hold in reset. and keep holding it in. Be Gentle! It is a tiny surface mount switch with a plastic lever.. Attempting to push it out the other side of the TC will not make the switch turn on better.
(I fix TC and have several reset levers bent over and jammed or broken off).
Power on the TC.. remember with the reset held in.. this needs three arms.. a friend or power switch you can get to with your feet..
Keep holding in reset for about 10sec until the front LED flashes rapidly.
Release reset and wait .. the boot will be slow as it deletes previous setting.. only from router side and pulls out the factory defaults. No files are deleted on the hard disk.. but the name of the TC may change.
How to load 5.6 into ML.
    1. Download 5.6 for Lion.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1482
Click to open the dmg but do not attempt to install the pkg.. it won't work anyway.
Leave the package open on the desktop so you can see the file. AirportUtility56.pkg
    2. Download and install unpkg.
    http://www.timdoug.com/unpkg/
Run unpkg on the desktop.. If your Mac refuses to run the software, because it wasn’t downloaded from the Apple store, go to security in preferences and allow other software to work.. this is limitation of trade methinks. You can set back later if you like.
Now drag the AirPortUtility56.pkg file over to unpkg.. and it will create a new directory of the same name on the desktop.. in finder, open the new directory, drill down.. applications, utilities .. there lo and behold is Airport utility 5.6 .. drag it to your main utilities directory or just run it from current location.
You cannot uninstall version 6 (now 6.3 if you updated) so don't try.. and you cannot or should not run them both at the same time.. although I have had no problems when doing so.
You can also load airport utility into a pc and get access to all the settings.  Untick the box for firmware updates.. it will still bug you occasionally.. regardless of the setting.. just ignore it..
You might still need to do the occasional reboot of the TC as well.
