Mac and windows clients losing connection to Server 2012 Namespace

I am running Windows 2012 Standard edition on two HP Servers. Both are fully patched O/S's and all HP system updates are installed. Each is running a 10 Gbit NIC to a Cisco 2960 Switch fully updated. Both Network shares are on HP external Drive bays connected
through a Smart Array P822 card
All users connect to the primary server (secondary server configured not to take referrals at this time)
My Mac clients running OS X 10.9.1 connect using smb and the namespace. When the designers come in they usually have to reboot in order to connect to their server shares. We discovered today that if they change the IP address the reboot is not needed. We
have an archive server running on a Synology NAS. Their connection to the Synology is not impacted.
The windows machines will lose connection at random and not everyone at once. Usually no more than twice in a week. The fix is either a reboot or an IP change, sometimes both. None of the machines go to sleep or hibernate. All machines are fully patched
with windows updates, and HP system updates.
We run Avast on both the Mac's and PC's if this makes a difference.
Any thoughts?
thanks

thanks Shaon,,
1) IP address before is within our DHCP scope of 192..168.0.51/200. When we set to static we set it to 192.168.0.16/20. We then reset back to DHCP.
2) The error message is that it can not find the server if I try to map it.
3) Clients can still access by IP address and FQDN
We have disabled Avast on a few machines to see if it will make a difference. We then ran into the issue on a machine without Avast installed.
We did notice that our DNS server was not deleting old entries and we found many duplicate entries. We set it to scavenge and then I went through and deleted old records. Not sure if this would cause a problem or not.
thanks again for your help!

  • Network Drives Losing Connection from Server 2012 to Windows 7 64bit Machines

I have about 20 users at my facility and recently upgraded our server from one running server 2003 to one running server 2012. Since that occurred, I have had numerous issues that I did not encounter on the old server.
Lately, users have been losing connection to the shared network drives randomly and constantly. The drives will come back on-line on their own but it could be 2 minutes or 30 minutes before they do and when users are in the middle of working on a document
from the network, they are unable to save until the drive comes back. Manually disconnecting and re-mapping them works sometimes but then the problem will re-occur. I have tried re-doing the shares and security settings and run a couple of supposed hotfixes
on the client side and the server side to no avail.
Now our regional office is suggesting that I re-connect the old server and then rebuild the new one with server 2008 r2, something I would like to avoid if possible.
I feel like this is a simple setting that I am missing, no conditions have changed except for the new server.
The server is a Intel Xeon CPU E5-2609 2.40GHz with Server 2012 64 bit on it. All computers (except on on 32 bit) are running Windows 7 Enterprise edition 64 bit.
    Please help.

I made this change to the registry on the server and am waiting to see if I have any more drops.
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\lanmanserver\parameters
    Value:
    autodisconnect
    Data
    type : REG_DWORD
    Value:
    ffff (Hex)
There was a client side change suggested but I am missing that value for the client side change and others in the organization who don't have it are not experiencing this problem.

  • VPN -- different behavior between Mac and Windows XP clients.

    Hi,
    Background:
I have a Mini server serving L2TP IPSEC vpn with both Mac and Windows (all XP, so far) clients.
The mini sits behind a Netopia router/firewall/NAT box that port forwards L2TP traffic to the mini.
The mini has a public but unrouted address (unrouted in the public Internet, that is.) The same Netopia serves as the router for outgoing public connections. DNS is served by other servers.
The VPN clients are distributed addresses from the unrouted public address space.
Client <-> NAT <-> Public Cloud <-> NAT <-> Private (with public addresses) <-> Mini (VPN)
Mac clients work happily, accessing internal and external hosts.
The XP clients have a registry value set to allow NAT traversal:
under HKEYLOCALMACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\IPSec, AssumeUDPEncapsulationContextOnSendRule is set to 2 to allow dual Nat traversal.
The XP clients happily access internal hosts, but hang accessing some, but not all external hosts.
For example, most Google services are quickly displayed, whereas www.comcast.net or www.llbean.net hang. It appears to be more frequent accessing third-party hosts while processing the initial page. Some Google web services, e.g. some Google Map plugins do eventually hang.
An XP host internal to the network configured with the above registry key set to 0 (No NAT traversal)
exhibits the same behavior when using a VPN connection
Public Cloud <-> NAT <-> Private (with public addresses) <-> Mini (VPN) <-> Pvt. <-> Client
Same host without VPN works fine.
Clearing the XP checkbox that routes all traffic to the remote (VPN) router makes external hosts work
    as you would expect.
    So my questions are:
    a) What's XP doing?
    b) Can it be fixed? (besides routing public traffic away from the VPN.)
    Thanks Jonathan
p.s. MrHoffman, I almost asked this in the HP Forum as well, till I noticed you were here. (Assuming you are Hoff.)

    Hi soccerdude21490-
    +Is this possible?+
Theoretically yes. However, it would be up to the school to allow you access through their network.
The first step would be to contact the school's IT department and ask them if they will allow such a connection, and if so, could they please provide you with the settings (ip address etc.).
    Luck-

  • I have partitioned my time capsule, but I can't get it to work as a Time Machine back up and permanent media server for both mac and PC. What format do I need to partition the drive to so that it works for both mac and windows and so that it will be visab

I have partitioned my time capsule, as I want part of it to act as a media server for both mac and windows. However I don't know what format that I need to partition it to. I also can't make it a permanently accesible drive. I want to restore the drive to the original format (which I don't know) and start again and re-partition the drive in a format that can be used for media by both mac and PC and for time machine back-ups and make the media part of it permanetly accesible so I can add and acccess my files.
    Thanks

You are mixing up a couple of things here.
The TC drive cannot be partitioned without removing it.. did you do that?
If you partition it you must use a Mac disk utility and use the HFS+ ie standard Mac format. And GUID partition table not windows type.
You can select erase disk in the airport utility.. that will take the disk back to original format. No partitions. TC is deliberately not partitioned as it is not a media server.. it is a backup device for TM. Over time .. the disk will be filled with TM backups so you have a long history of file changes to your computer.
There is no media server in the TC.. it is merely disk storage.. you can serve files from it to a media device.. but the TC itself is dumb as dumb.
Now the actual format of the drive is irrelevant to the PC.. The TC offers SMB file services to the network. You can copy files to and from the TC as if it was a local disk without caring one iota about the format. The TC handles that .. it is not a local disk .. it is a network drive.
Although you cannot partition the TC. you can still copy files to it.. this does have implications for TM.. but as long as there is plenty of free space should not be a major issue.
You can create a disk image via the disk utility in a Mac.. and as stated you can create partitions if you do it on a Mac with the disk directly connected which means breaking warranty if any exists on the TC.

  • Connect SQL Server 2012 from Windows Server 2003 with native client 9.0

    Hi,
I currently have a setup where ETL tool Ab Intio, running on a Linux server, connects to the SQL Server 2005 through a passthrough Wintel server with Windows Server 2003 OS using SQL server native client 9.0
Now I have the requirement to upgrade the SQL server from 2005 to 2012.
My question is, will it be possible to connect to SQL server 2012 through Windows Server 2003 with native client 9.0?
As per the specs, I need native client 11.0+ to fully support SQL Server 2012, but then, as per specs, native client 11.0 doesnot run on Windows server 2003. OS upgradation is currently not on the cards.
So will it be possible to the run the basic queries we use currently, if we can connect SQL server 2012 through Windows Server 2003 with native client 9.0/10.0, without updgrading the OS of the Wintel server?
    Thanking you in advance!

    Hi Soumya,
Yes, you can use the SQL Server Native Client shipped with SQL Server 2005 to connect to a SQL Server 2012 instance, and there is no need to upgrade the operating system.

  • Firefox no longer connects to internet on my mac, and windows machines, after v18. I've tried several solutions from Mozilla support and nothing works. Firefox

Firefox no longer connects to internet on my mac, and windows machines, after v18. I've tried several solutions from Mozilla support and nothing works. Firefox can't even connect to Mozilla for updates. Firefox just sits on the default search page and attempts to connect to websites by typing URLs, or by clicking on the links on the default search page don't work.

    You could try the following:
    * Make sure your Internet security software is up-to-date (i.e. you are running the latest version)
    * Remove Firefox from your program's list of trusted or recognized programs, then add it back. For detailed instructions, see Configure firewalls so that Firefox can access the Internet.
Let us know if this fixed your problem!

  • When I pressed Apply button after autoupdate, i get window reading as connecting to server and it goes on for hours together and no end and no further message.

I proceeded to update automatically and the I got the window to apply. I clicked the "Apply" button. The browser closed and reopened immediately, and my antivirus asked me whether to allow the software. I clicked allowed. Then I got the window reading as "Connecting to server etc.". I was waiting for further development. But this window keeps on showing same message without any progress even after I kept the same opened for nearly1 hour.

If you have problems with updating then best is to download the full version and uninstall the currently installed version.
Download a fresh Firefox copy and save the file to the desktop.
    * Firefox 4.0.x: http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/all.html
    * Uninstall your current Firefox version and remove the Firefox program folder before installing that copy of the Firefox installer.
    * Do not remove personal data if you uninstall the current version.
    * It is important to delete the Firefox program folder to remove all the files and make sure that there are no problems with files that were leftover after uninstalling.
Your bookmarks and other profile data are stored elsewhere in the [http://kb.mozillazine.org/Profile_folder_-_Firefox Firefox Profile Folder] and won't be affected by a reinstall, but make sure that you do not select to remove personal data if you uninstall Firefox.

  • How can I make an icon that links to a webpage that works with Mac and Windows??

    Hi!
I burn CDs with my photos and send them to clients.   Besides the photos folder, I would like to include a file (similar to the .webloc files on the Mac Desktop) that can be clicked and it will be linked to my website - it will open up a browser window and go to my website .      Is it posssible to make one of these icons that works with both Macs and Windows machines?  Thanks!

    Now it works!  Thanks, Denico!
The reason I saved to text:   The first time I followed your instructions, it did not work.   I tried to figure out what I did wrong and saw that you wrote to "save as plain text."   I did not know what this means and there was no option available to save a plain text.  So I looked around and saw "save as stationery" and I guessed that maybe that was what you meant.   And after that, it worked!  But the next thing you know, the icons started duplicating themselves.
I guess I had made a different mistake in the beginning and I fixed it without knowing what it is.
    Thanks for clearing that up.
But just one question.  WHY does saving as "stationery" make an icon duplicate itself?

  • I have an external drive - WD My Passport FOR MAC. I want to format it to work on both mac and windows. Which format do you think I should use? Will either one cause damage to the files on the hard drive?

I have an external hard drive - WD My Passport FOR MAC. I want to format it to work on both mac and windows. I also want to be able to connect it to my TV and watch movies.
I read up and I think I am supposed to use exFAT or FAT32? I also saw MS-DOS. Which format should I should use? Will any of them cause damage to the files on the hard drive?
My little memory stick uses MS-DOS and it works on both mac and windows.
Please can you just tell me a little about each and suggest which one to use.
I know how to change it once you tell me so don't waste your time writing about changing it.

Will any of them cause damage to the files on the hard drive?
WARNING: FORMATTING A DRIVE ERASES IT COMPLETELY !!
If you need to carry large files (e.g., larger than about 4GB) back and forth, you may need ExFAT. Otherwise MS-DOS works for smaller files.
The Mac can Read, but not write Windows New Technology File System (NTFS) without an add-on program such as Paragon NTFS.

  • Mac and Windows on same iTunes Library? NAS?

I moved my mac iTunes library to a NAS, hoping that all machines in the house (Mac and Windows) could access and update the library (but not at the same time because of file locking).  So I moved the .itl and .xml files over to the NAS as well but some machines can only see parts of the library.
Is this not a supported configuration?  How could I set up such a sharing library with update capability?  Thanks in advance.

You don't need any software installed on the windows PC. Just plug it into the Ethernet port on the router to the Ethernet port on the NIC card. If you want the Fios software installed go to activatemyfios.verizon.net and click configure another computer and enter your fios user name and password. If you are having connection problems go to verizon.com/connectionwizard and install that software.

  • How to prevent iTunes for Windows from "Updating iTunes Library"? (Library is on a NAS and managed by iTunes for Mac. Now getting update wars between Mac and Windows versions of the player.

How to prevent iTunes for Windows from "Updating iTunes Library"?
My library is on a NAS and managed by iTunes on a Mac. I can connect from wife's Windows laptop using iTunes for Windows but every time I do, it Updates iTunes Library. Next time I log in from my Mac it Updates iTunes Library in return. It appears I'm experiencing "Update Wars" between the Mac and Windows versions of iTunes. I would like to allow my wife to stream iTunes songs to her new laptop but I don't want any updates from this source... prefer to manage the library from my Mac and not allow Windows to do any thing other than listen to existing playlists.
    Thanks for any help/suggestions.

Connect the PC to the library on the NAS. Wait while "updated".
Under Edit > Preferences > Advanced make sure the media folder is correctly pointed at the media folder on the NAS. If not correct, close iTunes, wait a few moments, then open iTunes again.
Close iTunes on the PC. Do not open iTunes on the Mac.
Copy the library files, iTunes Library.itl, iTunes Library Extras.itdb, iTunes Library Genius.itdb, sentinel and the folder Album Artwork into an empty iTunes folder on the PC, for example C:\iTunes.
Click the icon to start iTunes and immediately press and hold down SHIFT. Keep holding until prompted to choose or create a library. Click choose and browse to the copied .itl file, e.g. C:\iTunes\iTunes Library.itl
The library should now work properly on the PC, however check the setting for the media folder. If needs be correct, close iTunes and reopen.
Open iTunes on the Mac. It will update again, but that should be last time.

  • Setting up a small business network using mac and windows pcs

Setting up a small business network using mac and windows??

Ok that sounds great. What is your actual question as it relates to AirPort networking? Is it: Can I set up a wired/wireless network with an AirPort base station that support multiple Mac & PC clients? If so the answer is yes.
If, instead, it is how to I configure an AirPort network to support a small business you will have to provide more details on both your networking & computing equipment in order for any of us to help you.

  • 1 hd with 2 file formats for use between mac and windows?

Think this is the right forum...
I want to instal a program onto an external hard drive for use on both mac and windows. The program supports both mac and windows.
My plan is to get an external hd and partition it in half. One half i will format mac os extended and the other i will format ntfs. I'll instal the mac version on the mac partition and the windows version on the ntfs partition.
This should work i'm thinking, yes? I.e. when i plug it into windows it'll run the windows installation no problem and when i plug it into the mac it'll run the mac installation no problem?
    Thanks.

An easier solution might be to just connect the drive to a Windows PC and format it as FAT32. Both Windows (98 and higher) as well as Mac allow full read/write access to FAT32 formatted drives. No need to download any drivers, etc. It just works.
Yes, this solution is not perfect, but none are. The free NTFS drivers for Mac are not most efficient drivers for speed/performance, the HFS+ drivers for Windows are not cheap, and have their own performance issues, and FAT32 has the limit of file sizes over 2GB (or is it 4GB now?) not supported. No one solution is perfect, but for the many one is better than the others, but it all depends upon their circumstances which is "better".

  • 5g with Mac and Windows?

Can I use my 5g ipod with both a Mac and Windows PC? I've been syncing with my Mac but I also have a PC. I downloaded the Ipod updater for Windows XP and installed it. When I connect my Ipod I receive a message that the Ipod cannnot be read and needs to be formatted. Will this formatting erase all data and not allow syncing with the Mac? Thank You,
    Charles

Hi Charles, welcome to Discussions. You will need to reformat the iPod with Windows, then it work with the Mac. A Mac formatted iPod will not work with Windows. When it is formatted via the PC, you can resynch with the Mac, to upload your data. After this, set synch to manual, so you can use both computers.
