Mac and Windows on same iTunes Library? NAS?

I moved my mac iTunes library to a NAS, hoping that all machines in the house (Mac and Windows) could access and update the library (but not at the same time because of file locking).  So I moved the .itl and .xml files over to the NAS as well but some machines can only see parts of the library.
Is this not a supported configuration?  How could I set up such a sharing library with update capability?  Thanks in advance.

You don't need any software installed on the windows PC. Just plug it into the Ethernet port on the router to the Ethernet port on the NIC card. If you want the Fios software installed go to activatemyfios.verizon.net and click configure another computer and enter your fios user name and password. If you are having connection problems go to verizon.com/connectionwizard and install that software.

2 Mac’s sharing the same itunes library?
I would like to use the same existing itunes music folder I have on a external drive, connected to one of my machines?
I can share without any problem the drive from my laptop and can share/view the other machines itunes music through itunes on my laptop, but can not set the music folder on my laptops Itunes to be the same as on the machine that the external drive is connected to.
I have heard and seen this operation before but how do I do it ?

You lost me on which machine is which and where the library is stored. If the library is on an external drive connected to Computer 1 and you want to access it on Computer 2 then:
    1. Connect to computer 1 using the Finder on Computer 2 and mount the external drive
    2. Open iTunes on Computer 2
    3. Select iTunes -> Preferences
    4. Select the Advanced tab
    5. Select Change next to iTunes Music Folder Location
    6. Navigate to the folder where the music is stored.
    7. Quit iTunes
    8. Open iTunes with the OPTION key held down.
    9. When prompted navigate to the Library file on Computer 1.
That should do it. As always, back up the Library file before you start this process. I would also recommend you back it up regularly as if you have a network issue while accessing the library file remotely, it could corrupt it.

  • Share files between Mac and Windows in same iMac with boot camp

    Hello,
I am new in using Mac and recently I buy a IMac 24" model.
I used to use PC a long time with a lot of old document.
I want to install Windows XP with boot camp.
But I also want to share my documents, music, video files between Mac and Windows in same iMac.
    How can I do this?
    Thanks in advance,
    Eric

Hi Eric and welcome to Discussions and the Apple world.
Mac OSX can read and write from Windows partitions (like the BootCamp Windows partition you are about to create) when using FAT32 as file system for Windows.
However with FAT32 you are limited to a partition size of 32GB.
Mac OSX can also read from Windows partitions that uses the NTFS file system, but it can not write to them unless you use a third-party helper like either Paragons NTFS for Mac http://www.paragon-software.com/home/ntfs-mac/ or NTFS-3G http://www.ntfs-3g.org/
Windows can not even see or use a Mac OSX partition without additional help by MacDrive http://www.mediafour.com/products/macdrive/

  • Is there a way for me to have two Macs work with the same iTunes library?

    Hey all,
I am replacing a G5 tower I have with a MacBook and I am of course going down in HD size. This means I will be using an external HD connected to a AirportExtreme BaseStation so all of my Macs can utilize it.
I plan on putting my iTunes library on this external drive (roughly 90GB in size), and I would like to be able to rate/edit music from either of my two laptops; is this possible?
If so, how would I go about doing that? And what, if anything, should I be mindful of? I don't want to lose my ratings or other info.
    Thanks in advance.

Sure. Hold down the Option key when you open iTunes, and iTunes will allow you to select the iTunes Library file of your choice. So, you can select the same library file from both computers. The iTunes Library file can be on either computer or on the ext HD, next to your music folder.
An iTunes Library file can only be accessed by one user at a time. That's the only limitation, though it may not be relevant to your intended use.

  • IPhone and iPod on same iTunes library

I'm interested in a iPhone 3G, currently have a iPod classic. I need to have my iTunes library stored on both. The iPod is used for the car. Because the connection for the iPod is in the glove box, I have to have both to be able to easily use the phone in the car. Is this possible?

I ahve both an iPod and an iPhone, bith synce to the same iTunes libary, granted the phone cannot sync everything given it's 16GB limitation, but you can certainly use both without a problem.

  • Licensing Acrobat Pro Mac and Windows on same Mac

I have a large number Macs in our business running Creative Suite 6. A number of those operators also have a need to run LiveCycle Designer, which is a Windows only product. At present we buy addtional 4 GB RAM, VMWare Fusion and a Windows 7 licence in addition to purchasing a standalone copy of Acrobat for Windows. Is it really necessary for us to buy an additional licence for Windows Acrobat or would we be OK utilising the existing Mac Acrobat Pro licence?

If you're buying the perpetual license version of Creative Suite 6, you would have to buy separate licenses for Macintosh and Windows versions. If you're getting Creative Suite 6 through your subscription to the Adobe Creative Cloud, you can mix your two eligible copies, and download both Windows and Mac versions.

  • Mac and Windows on Same System. Having glitches. Help!

Hello, I have my laptop set up to a router with the main computer being a Mac.  It basically works fine, but I have been noticing some glitches especially in trying to play media, such as YouTube files and other streaming videos.  I can never get them to play at the right speed, even though I have it set to automatic.  Do I need to set this differently?  I also cannot print PDF files, have tried just about anything, but that may have nothing to do with FIOS.
When we set it up, it was just configured to my system, with the network code and I downloaded the network adapters.  It looks like there is another step here -- configure Windows with either the info from a flash drive or a disc, according to the Verizon website.  But, how can I configue Windows if the main system is a Mac.  Confused.  Thanks for any info.

You don't need any software installed on the windows PC. Just plug it into the Ethernet port on the router to the Ethernet port on the NIC card. If you want the Fios software installed go to activatemyfios.verizon.net and click configure another computer and enter your fios user name and password. • How to prevent iTunes for Windows from "Updating iTunes Library"? (Library is on a NAS and managed by iTunes for Mac. Now getting update wars between Mac and Windows versions of the player.

How to prevent iTunes for Windows from "Updating iTunes Library"?
My library is on a NAS and managed by iTunes on a Mac. I can connect from wife's Windows laptop using iTunes for Windows but every time I do, it Updates iTunes Library. Next time I log in from my Mac it Updates iTunes Library in return. It appears I'm experiencing "Update Wars" between the Mac and Windows versions of iTunes. I would like to allow my wife to stream iTunes songs to her new laptop but I don't want any updates from this source... prefer to manage the library from my Mac and not allow Windows to do any thing other than listen to existing playlists.
    Thanks for any help/suggestions.

Connect the PC to the library on the NAS. Wait while "updated".
Under Edit > Preferences > Advanced make sure the media folder is correctly pointed at the media folder on the NAS. If not correct, close iTunes, wait a few moments, then open iTunes again.
Close iTunes on the PC. Do not open iTunes on the Mac.
Copy the library files, iTunes Library.itl, iTunes Library Extras.itdb, iTunes Library Genius.itdb, sentinel and the folder Album Artwork into an empty iTunes folder on the PC, for example C:\iTunes.
Click the icon to start iTunes and immediately press and hold down SHIFT. Keep holding until prompted to choose or create a library. Click choose and browse to the copied .itl file, e.g. C:\iTunes\iTunes Library.itl
The library should now work properly on the PC, however check the setting for the media folder. If needs be correct, close iTunes and reopen.
Open iTunes on the Mac. It will update again, but that should be last time.

  • Use same external drive for itunes in mac and windows?

    Hi,
I have a Macbook Air that has bootcamp and I use 99% of my time under Windows 7.
All of my music and movies are on an external hard drive and I have a problem using
it for iTunes under Windows and the Mac at the same time.
Is it possible to have both versions point to the same external drive?
I tried almost everything but it fails as the file paths are stored once and for all in
    the iTunes library file.
When booting under OS/X and opening iTunes, it loads the .itl file and shows all music
but of course it doesn't see anything since the path under OS/X has nothing to do with
    the one under Windows.
My iTunes lib was created under Windows and all files are stored in a variation of:
    J:\Private\My Music\iTunes[Rock | Classical | Soundtracks]
Under OS/X of course the path is totally different:
    /Volumes/DRIVE_J/Private/My Music/iTunes/[Rock | Classical | Soundtracks]
Now if I reimport everything in iTunes for OS/X it will change all the paths and then
Windows will not be able to fetch the files.
Isn't there a way to have relative paths so both the OS/X and Windows versions
of iTunes work flawlessly without caring at all about which OS is running?
    This is driving me nuts.
I'm not talking about Sharing an iTunes library over a network. I want to share the
same physical folder between Windows and OS/X
    Thanks for any help.
    Steve

  • Windows can see iTunes Library, Mac can not see Windows library

    All,
I'm having a bit of a dilemma here.. I think the following issues are sourced by the same root cause.
First i can't not get my iphone remote.app to be recoginized by my Mac OSx desktop, it works fine with my windows desktop(they are plugged into the same router and settings look good here so I'm discounting the router as the cause). Yes I have made sure to give access to itunes in the Firewall settings
Second, My windows machine can see my Mac's shared itunes library, yet my Mac machine can see my window's shared itunes library.
Any suggestions will be appreciated!and thankyou!

I had this problem recently, and it was because I had both the XP firewall enabled and the firewall included in my F-Secure client. Check your Windows machine to make sure you don't have such a firewall conflict.

  • HT1535 I own an iPhone4, an iPod 3rd generation and an iPad 2. I use the same iTunes library but unfortunately synced iPad with a different computer before syncing to my own. Do I risk losing the films/apps I've downloaded onto my iPad if I sync with my i

I don't want to sync what is on my iPod to my iPad. (I have a 32gb iPod but only 16gb on iPad. The iPod I use mostly for music.) I can't seem to add the films I have downloaded onto iPad to iTunes. If I could do that, I could erase them from iPad to create more storage.
    This is intensely confusing, sorry.

    Question.....
"I own an iPhone4, an iPod 3rd generation and an iPad 2. I use the same iTunes library but unfortunately synced iPad with a different computer before syncing to my own. Do I risk losing the films/apps I've downloaded onto my iPad if I sync with my iPod?"
    Answer.....
Yes you will lose the films that you downloaded to the iPad when you sync with your own iTunes unless you transfer the purchases into your own iTunes library. Were these movies that you purchased? If so, you might be able to download them again for free. Do you have multiple computers that you sync from or is this someone else's purchased content?
You can select whatever you want to sync to all of your devices in iTunes, you do not have to sync the same content to all device.
