Mac and Windows showing different hard drive space remaining?

Hello Guys,
I am using my 1tb hard drive with mac and windows and while checking the space remaining, my mac says roughly 600gb left and my windows comp. says about 500gb left. I am just wondering which one of the storage remaining statements is correct and why they both show different numbers (by 100gb)? If it helps, this also happens to my 16gb flash drive. mac says 10 gb left, and windows says less space left (dont remember actual number, but was roughly 6-8).
Just asking becuase I want to know why such a big difference in size remaining. Could it have to do with the way each OS sees what defines the harddrive as full?
if it matters, my hdd format is MS-DOS (FAT32).
Thanks a lot,
krm1897

haha its been 2 years. And no, i didn't figure it out, but i speculate it may have to do how Mac OSX and Windows reads the FAT file system (my tb hdd was FAT formatted so i could use it on both OS) and calculates remaining space.
That may be right, or it may be completely wrong lol

  • Mac and Windows shared external hard drive - possible?

Our set up is a Windows XP pc and iMac 20" and I hoped that we could back up both computers using one external hard drive - that way if the Mac failed we could still use the pc to access the files and vice versa. But having looked into buying one I'm starting to get doubts about whether it is possible. I just don't understand all the technical stuff. Can anyone help in layman's terms how we go about it?
    Thanks
    Jane

Try iFelix's excellent guides for Windows to Mac networking (link). I understand that he will do Vista versions as soon as possible.
A FAT32 formatted drive in a NAS Enclosure like this one (link) should suit you needs. Remember that a NAS drive will not have the performance of a Firewire connected drive so you do need to consider your intended usage.

This is a Mac question not a Photoshop question, and I am a Windows users, but I can Google and this might be what you need to do:

  • Mac, iPad and iPhone show different iCloud Drive content

I'm getting mad about iCloud drive.
For hours I try to get all my devices in sync. But they all show different content. In Finder I can see only 4 app folders containing the documents (actually pages, keynote, numbers and pdfexpert). Browsing the iCloud drive on the iPad for example using the pages app I can also see a GoodReader folder and some more. Some of them are empty folders (maybe empty folders are hidden on mac by default?) but some of them contain folders and files which obviously won't download to my Mac.
There are also some folders related to apps I removed from all my devices. It's ok if these app's iCloud folders stay in the cloud if they contain any documents but they stay there even if they are empty and there seems to be no way to remove these folders manually (even the web interface of iCloud greys out the trash when such a folder is selected).
When I use OS X Preferences to remove some old app's iCloud content I can do this for some of them but then (all of a sudden - can be after two of ten removals) the list on the left side shows only "Backups" (or sometimes "Backups" and an unspecific "Documents") and you have to close the Preferences and reopen it a little later to see the complete list again. And showing the app icons seems to be a problem too (including the iPad / iPhone preferences -> iCloud) - some of them are shown, for some of them there are only placeholders.
Am I doing it wrong or are these common problems?

Same problem here – specifically, the CONTENTS of "iCloud Drive" are different when accessed:
    A) in the Finder on Yosemite
    B) on the web at iCloud.com
    C) on an iOS device
The MAJOR problem for me is that my Goodreader folder only shows up on the iOS device, making it impossible for me to access my Goodreader files. This is a huge issue for me as my workflow depends on having access to those files.
In general, however, it's ridiculous that you can copy data to iCloud Drive on your iOS device and then you cannot read that data anywhere else.

  • Mac Bootcamp cause lossage in hard drive space

I was trying to install windows on my mac using bootcamp, but because the process took way too long, i deceided to stop the process. My hard drive is approximately 700-800 GB and the space I actually use is about 200-250 GB but it is saying i use up to 400 GB or hard drive. I used to Disk Inventry X to try to find where this extra 200GB are coming from and it says about 200GB is from "other files and folder". I am suspecting that the windows partition was created and hidden, because I can not find it in disk Utility either... If it helps i am using boot camp version 10.0.5 i think and was installing windows 7. I also have a 2012-2013 Macbook 13'. PLEASE HELP!!!!

    Hi AsianCraft,
You should be able to recover that disk space by deleting the Windows partition from within the Boot Camp Assistant. This should restore your disk to a single partition drive. There is more information about removing Boot Camp on Page 10 of the manual:
Boot Camp - Installation & Setup Guide (Mountain Lion)
    http://manuals.info.apple.com/en_US/boot_camp_install-setup_10.8.pdf
    Remove Windows from your Mac
How you remove Windows from your Mac depends on whether you installed Windows on a second partition or on a single-volume disk.
If you installed Windows on a second disk partition: Using Boot Camp Assistant as described below, remove Windows by deleting the Windows partition and restoring the disk to a single-partition OS X volume.
If your Mac has multiple disks and you installed Windows on a disk that has only one partition:
Start up in OS X and use Disk Utility, located in the Other folder in Launchpad, to reformat it as an OS X volume.
1 Start up your Mac in OS X.
2 Quit all open apps and log out any other users on your Mac.
    3 Open Boot Camp Assistant.
4 Select “Remove Windows 7,” then click Continue.
5 Do one of the following:
    • If your Mac has a single internal disk, click Restore.
    • If your Mac has multiple internal disks, select the Windows disk, select “Restore to a single
Mac OS partition,” then click Continue.
    Cheers,

  • Info showing incorrect hard drive space

Inside the finder the hard drive is showing about 23 gigs used after deleting user file (5g applications, 12 gig library, 6 gig system, 15 megs user) and creating new one (in order to sell) but get info on the hard drive icon is showing 52 gigs used... could this be right?
    thanks

    Hello,
Ok. I have a 750G SSD drive on a mac pro retina.  Finder says I have 605G available.  While I about this mac says 215G available.  I have tried to turn off timemachine so I can have the correct numbers.
10.8.3 osx is my OS, I have 16G of Ram and 2.7Ghz intel core i7.
When is apple going to fix this finder bug.  And from reading the thread i get the impression that someone at apple thinkgs this is the correct behavior for finder.  That is flat wrong, I am a developer and I can tell you that available memory should ALWAYS be correct.  I have run a verify on my SSD to get the disk on par.
As I no longer trust my apple disk my next steps are to back up and move to another machine.  And then start calling apple to have this fixed.
So when is this to be fixed??

  • I am new to mac and have an external hard drive question

    Hello
I am new to mac. I used a PC before and stored all of my files (documents, photo's and music) on an external hard drive. The new mac is communicating with my external and is allowing me to open word/excel documents into pages/numbers. However when I go to save the document to my external the mac tells me "your document could not be saved. you can duplicate the document or discard your changes to close it."
Is this happing because the external is formatted to PC and not mac? Will I need to get a mac external hard drive if I wish to continue to save my documents like this? or will I need to get Miscrosoft office for mac for me to continue to use my existing external? or will i need to duplicate everything to save?
    Please help.
    Thanks
    Janice

Is this happing because the external is formatted to PC and not mac?
    Yes that is correct.
Will I need to get a mac external hard drive if I wish to continue to save my documents like this?
If you no longer use a PC you could format this drive for the Mac. However be aware that formatting a drive will erase all the data on it. So you would need someplace to copy the data off this drive to while you did the re-format and then you could copy the data back.
You could get another drive, format it for the Mac and copy the data to it. Then re-format the original drive and use it as a backup drive. Always good to have backups.
Post back with the drive type and size of the current drive, if you are doing backups now and how and if you still need to access this drive from a PC.
    regards

  • IPAD 4 sync with ITUNES used up MAC OS 10.8.6 hard drive space

I just purchased an IPAD 4 last night and set it up through ITUNES as normal. It is replacing my first gen IPAD. Once Itunes was done syncing all the info to the new IPAD I got a warning that the startup disc was full and now all my HD space is gone on my Macbook. I checked my Iphoto and music folder and it looks like it may have duplicated everything that was in the folders originally on my hard drive. I now have only 2gb of space left on the hard drive out of 160gb.Is there anyway to correct this through Itunes without having manually going through all my pictures and music and deleting the duplicates and also why did it happen?  Thanks

  • Lightroom catalog and activity on different hard drive

New to Lr.  I have downloaded the 30-day trial and the process is so automated that I doesn't provide an opportunity to install on a drive other than the boot drive (C:\) . I have a very small solid state drive that I use only for my OS and other key programs.  I have a 2TB drive for data.
How can I force the program and catalogs onto the larger data drive?  If my only option is to work from the C:\ drive this will be a deal breaker for me.

It's pretty easy to have the catalog file and photos on the 2TB drive, that's what takes up most of the space.
I don't know if you can install LR CC to a different drive, I never tried.

  • Disk utilities reports different hard drive space

I have a MacBook Pro early 2011 that's acting up.When I  repair the disk from disk utilities (separate drive and from recovery drive) it states that I have 100 GB available.  However, if I click on the first "Macintosh HD" that shows up in disk utilities it says I only have18 mb available.  How can that be? (Capacity 748 GB). I thought if I repair the nested version it would do the trick.  But, repairing the "main" drive shows this discrepancy.  Anybody have any ideas?
    Helga

The larger value is correct. The smaller one refers to the Core Storage logical volume group, not the startup volume.

  • Quicktime Movies that Open in Safari eat up hard drive space. Howto Delete?

I have a Mac Book Pro. The hard drive space is minimal as you probably know. Whenever I open up a Quicktime Movie in Safari the movie will open in a new Safari window. Some of the movies are rather large trailers and what not. I notice that my hard drive space goes down with each movie I open. Where are these movies saved? How do i clear up this space after i'm done watching? I hate needing to delete other stuff to open up quicktime movies.

If you've set the cache to 100 MB's that all QuickTime will use.
You're going to have much bigger issues with such little free space on your drive. Why not buy a cheap external drive and move large folders like Music, Movies and Pictures to it.
iTunes, iPhoto and iMovie can all store their files on external drives.

  • Hard Drive Spaces Vanishes, MacBook won't start

I am quite perplexed and sad because my MacBook is in a terrible state.
So, I normally have limited hard drive space remaining (1 - 3gb) on my drive, but earlier it started bothering me, telling me I had 400mb left. I then deleted some files and brought it back to 2.2gb left. Within a few minutes, I got another warning the hard drive was almost full. Suddenly, it was down to 146mb remaing, steadily decreasing (the only things open were Adium and Update). Then, it had 0kb left and started telling me to force quit applications. I eventually shut down, and now it won't boot. I turn it on, get the grey apple at the rotating graphic, but it stays there. Ironically, I can still boot windows.
Please, if you have any suggestions, I would very much appreciate help.
    Thanks

It sounds like you are building up excessive temporary files. What apps are you running? Have you installed apps lately? You should always keep at least 15% of your drive empty at all times.

  • Mavericks recovered hard drive space post-install

I had about 12 gig free on my 15" 2012 MBP pre install. Installed 10.9 and now I have almost 36Gig free. Ran HD checks and no issues reporting. I looked at my backup and checked folder sizes in my profile pre and post install and all the data is there. I have an OCZ 256GB SSD drive installed and I've heard the stories about SSD and potential data loss but everything looks fine and is present post-install. I've read nothing about 10.9 compressing files so I am really stumped. I don't backup system files so I can't determine if some older files were purged. Still, thats a lot of data to recover. I then installed 10.9 on a new 27" Imac and hard drive space remained about the same and no extra space recovered. I'm a certified Mac tech and even all the techs I work with have never seen behavior like this on any version post-install. Anyone ever hear of this or have a similar experience?  Thanks!!

Just installed Mavericks this morning and am surprised and alarmed in equal measure.
My MacBook Pro Late 11 750GB HG had:
    156GB remaining before installing mavericks
    It now it has
    415GB remaining post installation.
All my apps and files appear to be there so I am at a loss to work out what has happened.
