Mac and winxp pc file sharing

I have followed the directions from ifelix http://www.ifelix.co.uk/tech/3001.html about file sharing. When I put in the PC IP address in the mac it states I have the wrong password. I do not know when to put in the password, it had not asked for one, not really sure which password. For the router, the pc, the mac? Any help?

I am not able to get through. I wonder if the router is set up correctly. If I go to the router it tells me that a number ending with xxx.101 is the IP adddress for the pc and ending with xx.100 is for the mac, yet I used a widget to identify the ip address of the mac, it says it is the .101(for the mac). If I use anything else exept the .101 it does not respond,(keeps searching) if I use .101 it at least tells me it is the wrong name or password. I have tried the password I made for the identity, and several combinations of the name and has not worked.
Thanks for he help

I'm trying to share a folder between users on a single mac.  I want both users to be able to read and write so the folder stays current on both accounts.  I put the folder in "shared," set permissions on folder so other user can read and write, enabled file sharing, but can't find the folder on the second user's account.  Any help?

Did you log out of one account and into the other or just used Fast user switching?
Is the permissions set to anyone?
When you move data to teh Shared folder is it copied or just moved?
If copied then it's not a folder both can access, just a way station like a USB thumb drive that things are coped too and off of likely.
You can run this #5 on each user account to reset the user permissions once they are taken back out of the Shared folder

  • How do I clean up your mac and remove unwanted files?

Can someone instruct me how to clean my mac and remove unwanted files that slow the mac down?

this forum is about running Windows on a Mac.
    Hence, use Disk Cleanup
CCleaner works fine for both Mac and Windows - strongly recommend it for Windows
Uninstall background processes, less is more and you don't need most and definitely not two that are trying to monitor system and disk drives. If you need one setup a system just for weekend maintenance and emergency.
Allow more than adequate free space.

  • Windows 7 and Mac 10.5 network file sharing

I am having extreme difficulties sharing files over my home network! I have 3 PCs and one Mac. I have tried the Mac forums and the Windows forums, to no avail.
    On the Mac side:
File Sharing is ON, with smb
Users are set to Everyone with read/write privileges
WINS has the correct Workgroup name
Network Name has no spaces in it
Shared my Desktop, Public Folder, Documents, and Shared folders (just to cover root folders and specific ones too)
Mac gives an smb://xxx.xxx.x.x address and a local network accession "mycomputername.local," but I don't know what to do with either of these things. When I put the addresses into the Windows Run dialogue box or in Internet Explorer, they don't seem to recognize the path.
Firewall is set to Allow All Incoming Connections
Under the Shared location in Finder, I can see my router name, and if I click on it, I can connect. No password is required. I am connected as my account name. However, I can't see the PC or anything at all, in fact.
Under the Shared location in Finder, I can see my shared name for my Mac. But I cannot connect to it, probably because I'm connecting from my Mac.
It would be nice to use the smb://DNSname/sharename or the smb://IPaddress/sharename function in the Go to Server window, but I have no idea where to find this information on my PC. Or on the network. Or whatever this is referring to.
    On the PC:
Sharing is NOT password protected under Advanced Sharing Options
I am sharing my Desktop and My Documents with Everyone and Guest, and Windows 7 has provided a file://computername/Users/foldername path. However, when I put this into the Connect to Server or Connect to File window, there is an error.
I can click on my Mac computer name in the Network window, but I get the error message that it cannot connect (network path cannot be found, using \\MYMACNAME as the path). This is when my Mac says it is "connected" when I click on the router in Finder's Shared places.
Of course both the Mac and the PC have full connectivity to the same network.
Also, I have disabled the internal firewall in the Belkin router.
Also, my accounts have identical names with no spaces.
My Mac (10.5) DID successfully connect to Windows XP before I upgraded.
    Any advice? Thanks guys!!
P.S. -- I have also posted to the Windows people here: http://social.answers.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/w7network/thread/b5144e55-d024- 401c-85ae-1cf94226b786
In the hopes that I will double my chances of getting an answer.

    And my response:
Okay, so here's what I've done:
OS X: did the sharing thing, smb thing, and directories thing.
Win 7: Network sharing settings are correct for Home or Work (current profile). I left my Public alone, but verified that my network is recognized as a Home location.
User accounts exist in both the Mac and PC. Names are the same. Heck, passwords match and I'm logged into the same account on each computer, just in case.
Firewalls are scary to me, so I did the best I could. I went to my browser, typed in my router IP address, and went to the DHCP Client List. Both of the computers were listed with their assigned IP addresses. I "reserved" those IP addresses so they the router would always assign that IP address to that MAC address (so I could count on it in the future). It turns out that they are sequentially assigned, so I figured that if I added any more devices (my other PC, the PS3, etc.) those IP addresses would just be +1 to the last digit cluster in the IP address.
Then I went to Windows Firewall, because I don't have a third-party firewall. I confirmed that I was connected to the Home network, and then clicked Advanced Settings. Wow, there's a lot of rules! There were multiple File and Printer Sharing rules (both inbound and outbound), so I didn't mess with them. Instead, I created a Custom Rule (bot inbound and outbound) for all programs, any protocols and all ports, and added the IP address range (192.168.2.1 - 192.168.2.9, giving myself plenty of extra for future devices) I found from above to the local and remote IP Address boxes. I specified to Allow the Connection for Domain, Public and Private, and gave it a name that started with A so I could find it easily in the future. Finally, I set the Interface Type to be LAN and Wireless (my PC is wirelessly connected).
In OS X, in the Firewall tab of the Security preference, I set it to Allow all incoming connections. File Sharing (SMB) is the first name on the list, but I cannot click on it or modify it in any way. I don't know what else to do. Am I missing something?
I've shared My Music and Desktop on the Win 7 for Everyone (not just the Homegroup!), and shared My Documents and Desktop for Everyone to read/write on the Mac.
Okay, now I need to reboot on both computers. brb...
Wow, definitely don't reserve any IP addresses on your router! I took that setting off, restarted everything, reset the modem and router, and I can now connect both computers to the internet.
I can still connect to the Windows via the Connect to Server dialogue and smb://AJPC.
In Windows Network, I can now see my Mac user account name, but when double-clicking on it I get the error message "Windows cannot access \\ComputerName. Check the spelling of the name. Otherwise, there might be a problem with your network. To try to identify and resolve network problems, click Diagnose." Under "Details," it says Error code: 0x80070035 The network path was not found." When I diagnose, Troubleshooting can't identify the problem.
Any advice? Thanks for your help guys!
A side note: I just checked my router's DHCP client list, and my PC is now connecting at 192.168.2.8, which is definitely not sequential. Good thing I specified the IP Address range all the way to 192.168.2.9 just in case; apparently the router can't count.

  • Mac OS 9 AFP file sharing volume not visible under Mac OS 10.5

An old blue-white PowerMac G3 running Mac OS 9.2.2 with file sharing on is not visible on the network for a MacBook Pro running Mac OS X 10.5.5. – However, a PowerBook G4 with Mac OS X 10.4.11 perfectly shows the G3.
Connecting to the G3 works on the new MacBook Pro with OS X 10.5 if I use the server's IP-address (afp://xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx) but does not work if I use the server's name (afp://<servername>).
All other shares on the network are visible for both the MacBook Pro running OS X 10.5 and the PowerBook G4 running OS X 10.4.
Why does the MacBook Pro with Mac OS X 10.5.5 not show the G3?
Why can't I connect to the G3 using its AFP name?

I think this is because there is no AppleTalk on Leopard.
    Ah, I stand corrected........
    Go to SystemPreferences > Network
Select your connection in the left column. Advanced > AppleTalk
    Enable AppleTalk for your connection.

  • Mac OS X Server, File Sharing, Permission

    Hi All,
I’m trying to use Mac os X server Maverick in a small team within my
organization. I was able to successfully install and setup the server, which
resides in a local network. I did the following setup:
         1 )  Open Directory Setup
2 )  File Sharing ,  /Users , available for home directory over AFP
3 )  Created Network users with home folder pointing to /Users
4 )  Bound Clients to the server
5 )  XCode Server Setup with git repository
Users now can login using their own account and their home folder
is loaded from the server. Unfortunately there  are issues. Clients are having permission issues,
which we have never encountered on local machines before we switched to using XCode Server.
Here is a list of some of the issues so far
          Xcode issues on client computer:
               a)   When creating a XCode project, it reports the error “Couldn’t not find build module Drawin” when clicking create
button.I found online a workaround fix that supposedly works, which is to set "Enable Modules (C and Objective C)"
to No. But we didn’t have to do this before using XCode server.
b )  When committing to git repo , the following error happens “fatal: Repository has been updated ,
but unable to write to new_index. Check the disk is not full or quota is not exceeded ,
and then "git reset HEAD"   to recover”  Another work around we found online is to do on the client,
cp index backup ; mv backup index
We don’t want to have to do this every time we create a project, what could be wrong with the setup?

You need to run Server Admin and click on the File Sharing icon at the top. Then click on Share Points, and Browse. You then browse to the folder you want to set the permissions on.
You will see in the bottom half of the window the current permissions. While in theory you can use just POSIX permissions, Snow Leopard prefers using ACL permissions. So as an example to set a folder to be only accessible by members of a specific group and to deny access to everyone else you would do the following.
Click on the + symbol at the bottom
A window will open listing all your users and groups, click on groups at the top
Find the special 'Everyone' group and drag it to the ACL section
Find the group you want to give access to and also drag that to the ACL section but make sure it is above the Everyone group as higher setting override lower settings
Set the Everyone group to Deny Read permission, this will prevent them being able to access this folder
Set the group you do want to have access to Allow Read or Allow Read/Write, the first would let them only be able to read, the second also allows them to create files or modify files.
Now click on the Save button in the bottom right.
You might also want to click on the gear wheel symbol and choose 'Propagate permissions' if you want to apply these permissions to all the files and folders within this folder.

  • Mac 10.5.8 unable to connect to Mac 10.4 for file sharing purpose

I'm currently using Mac 10.5.8, when i tried to connect to my friend Mac 10.4. It just show connecting status only. My friend already turn on the file sharing. Firewall turn off. Restarted and tried again also no use. His machine able to connect to my machine for file sharing. Previously we able to do file sharing for both way, but now only one way work (his can connect to mine). This problem happen since 2 weeks ago.
I will appreciate if any Mac expect can give me some ideal how to resolve this problem.
    Thanking you in advance.

Are you doing this local or over the net(ports opened on router/modem?)? And try connecting by menu bar, Go, Network if you are currently trying by menu bar, Go, Connect to Server. And what does System log show by Console or Terminal. This is Leopard connecting by LAN to my Tiger machine:

  • Lightroom 5.6 cc for Mac and Canon 6D file corruption when adding to catalog

    Hello,
I was testing my newly purchased (August 5, 2014) Canon 6D camera shooting out the window of a moving car and also by walking around. I was using the Scene Intelligence Auto setting, shooting in single shot mode and continuous shooting mode. I used the kit lens Canon EF 24-105mm f/4 for the 6D. I've been using LR 5.6 CC to download the CR2 files into a catalog. Before downloading I check the images on the 6D camera's preview feature and all the images look accurate - full color and image. However, when using LR, as I'm downloading the CR2s or converting them into DNGs for my LR catalog, I notice on the thumbnail strip changes some of the images that are being imported into thumbs showing color shifts and/or blank white areas. After LR has processed the images as CR2s and/or DNG the processed are now look like these corrupted thumbs. Many images came out with sections of each image showing a rectangular area of negative imagery (i.g. the sky was rendering purple, the trees orange, etc. Also two of the images blank white expect for the a quadrant of distorted color and negative imaging.
When I try the Canon download software, the images are accurate so I know camera's memory card and probably the camera are not at fault. Any suggestions as to why I may be encountering this problem and how to resolve it?
I use a 2012 Mac Book Pro and have my LR catalog on a external hard drive.
    Thank you.

Based only on  what you described seeing after  the previews were built and having not seen an example, it sounds like a corruption of the actual file. I have experienced this myself and have usually found a bad connection/cable between the card reader and the Mac or a glitchy card reader. Over the weekend I had issues trying to import images because the USB cable I grabbed was for my Garmin GPS and the my Mac didn't even recognize the reader was attached until I swapped cables. It is not a perfect system. When it is working, life is great but when it is not...
The suggestion to copy your photos to your HDD first (@99jon) is what I would also suggest. This has worked best for me and has caused fewer problems than importing directly from the card. I have turned off the option to automatically start LR when a card is attached so I can manage the offload myself. I never import directly from the camera either since that just adds another layer of complexity which brings it's own compatibility issues. Finally, never, ever let Lightroom or the Mac OS delete your files from your card after import. When you are ready to erase the images from the card, put it back into your camera and use the camera's format utility (it's in your camera's menu but I am not a Canon shooter so I can't tell you where to find it). The memory cards are very cool technology but, since the makers have no idea how they will be used or by what, they are not always reliable. People have reported memory card issues when they delete images from the card in the camera. Best to offload them with a copy (not a move since that implies an OS delete) and then reformat the card in-camera.
One last thing. The in-camera previews are actually JPEGS produced by software in your camera. The default is to make a high contrast and saturated version off what was recorded by the sensor. The RAW image is the data that is taken right from the sensor with almost no modification. The RAW image however is going to utilize the camera's full bit depth and will have a much greater dynamic range than the converted 8-bit JPEG that you see in the display. Also, those little blinkie displays in camera also apply to the JPEG image and not the actual RAW file which can often hold detail the JPEG can't. The point is, my RAW previews always looked washed out and over exposed immediately after import into Lightroom but as long as my exposure is not pushed up against the right side of the histogram, I know the image has as much workable data as I could get. As long as the highlight data is not clipped, don't worry about your previews not looking as good as your in-camera JPEGs. There are development presets to create the same look after import (Develop module/Camera Calibration panel/Profile drop down). There you will see profiles such as Adobe Standard as well as a set of Camera profiles (Faithful, Landscape, Portrait, etc.). Select one of the Camera xxx profiles if you want an in-camera JPEG look. Not perfect, but a really good starting point.

  • Airport extreme and HDD and windows 7 file sharing, Airport extreme and HDD and windows 7 file sharing

Hi there I simply could not launch files sharing at home using airport extreme.

The disk must be formatted HFS+ ie the standard Mac format or it has to be FAT32.. people mention FAT16 but lets face it.. no one is going to go back that far.
NTFS is not readable.. Strongly recommend using HFS+ so format the disk on a Mac .. once plugged into the AE you can access it from windows over network.

  • I purchased songs thru itunes and used a file sharing system to get other songs. when i went to sync it came up with error -69. just for the stuff i purchased yesterday and the free doownloads. whats the issue?

purchased songs thru itunes yesterday and also thru a free file sharing place. i added the songs to itunes yesterday & today i went to sync up and all the songs from yesterday have a error -69. what is the deal?

Usually a 69 indicates damage to a file ... but it's a bit suspicious that everything acquired in a short time frame is showing a -69. That has me wondering about disk damage.
Perhaps try running a disk check (chkdsk) over your C drive (or whichever drive you've got the 69-throwing content on).
XP instructions in the following document: How to perform disk error checking in Windows XP
Select both Automatically fix file system errors and Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors, or use chkdsk /r (depending on which way you decide to go about doing this). You'll almost certainly have to schedule the chkdsk to run on startup (especially if it's running on the C:\ drive). The scan should take quite a while (especially on the C:\ drive) ... if it quits after a few minutes or seconds, something's interfering with the scan.
Does the chkdsk find/repair any damage? If so, do the items still give you a -69 when syncing?

  • How to connect to desktop mac using iPhone. File sharing, ScreenSharing???

Can you please explain how can I connect to my desktop using my iPhone like ScreenSharing will do or file sharing.
Please describe step be step how to?
    Thank you,
A new iPhone user who want to get the most out of it

If by it you mean Mocha VNC, that is how it works. You can connect when you are not on your network but you will have to enable forwarding on you router if you have one.
What is it tha you want to do remotly?
This world of remote management is that of the IT tech. Mocha is for techs and people that get the technology they are using or are interested in getting it. It is not plug and play stuff. You have to be willing to learn a bit and then with that comes a lot of power.
If you just want to turn it on and have it work anywhere you won't find that. The reason ports are blocked form the internet is to protect your computers from someone else doing exactly what you are trying.
So if you want you can enable port forwarding for port 5900 on your router. The IP address VNC Mocha will need is now the IP address of your router. Create a second connection on the list in Mocha for this connection as it is different than the one that will work on your network. Your router will forward anything on that port to you computer. I have successfully done this. It isn't very fast i will say. The screen refresh is very slow. You need patience to get anything done. I needed a file from a PC i had at home. It took about 15 minutes to get that file moved on to my iDisk through running Firefox on the PC from several towns away using Mocha. I might have been on a slow internet connection too.

All Macs use the time capsule to backup.
    Problem:
I can't use filesharing from over the internet anymore to connect to my server.
Ports 139 and 548 seem to be reserved for the internal backupdisk of the time capsule.
The port mapping rule gets turned off.
How can i still access my files from the outside ?
If i change the filesharing ports to something else, how can i access it ?
    Anybody an idea ?

    Hi
+"I can connect to my server using vpn but my workgroup shortcut in the sidebar of finder doesn't work"+
That's about right. Bonjour won't work over VPN unless you work at it. AFP548 has an article on how to achieve it if you want to go to the trouble.
+"Isn't there a way without manually connect using go?"+
You could drop desired share points into the dock. Next time you initiate a VPN connection simply click on the icon in the dock. Works for me every time.
+"Perhaps some tweaking on the vpn server side?"+
None that I'm aware of. Perhaps someone else knows a way?

  • My office uses windows based computers setup with a server setup. Can an apple server emulate or find compatibility with an apple server or apple computer linked to the server and allow full file sharing and printer sharing with pc's?

I have 11 computers all pc's linked to an old windows server and all used primarily for microsoft office and printer sharing as well as for internet browsing. Can an apple joining the setup cause compatability issues?

    HI,
grey-haired IT guy here, old enough to come from the counter culture. I ran (COO, including IT & compliance) a third billion dollar financial institution all on Macs 15 to 20 years ago.  All the "experts" had a long list of reasons it would be impossible, and it drove the examiners nuts, but it's only gotten better.
So your benefits are going to be mostly in ease of administration after the learning curve, less aggravating glitches, better overall reliability, and arguably better security.  And reductions in cost and improvement in time to implement changes.
In my current environment of mostly dozens of PCs, the moment I let the OS X Server be the domain master controller, the Windows network browser settled down and instantly showed network neighborhoods like it should have.  (We may have some forgotten pre-NT machines plugged in somewhere -- this is NOT a financial institution).
Couple anecdotes might explain the feeling of coming in out of the cold:  Putting a test copy of a web site from the cloud onto the Mac server, XAMPP or MAMP is pretty much already there. The site has a couple WordPress blogs, and they need .htaccess files, and Apache needs an option set to permit remapping URLs. After much searching far and wide to find why it didn't seem to be working, I found the checkbox right there on Apple's management screens.  Much easier than editing .conf from command line.  Linux web admins hate it.
Tale # 2:  We aren't fully Windows domain controlled -- just using the old network browser.  Need to upgrade that, and I Googled quite a while trying to understand what needed to be done to use Apple's Open Directory instead of setting up an Active Directory on Windows -- both SLDAP3.  Turns out one reason I couldn't find much is there isn't much to say:  it just works.  Just join the domain from a Windows machine.
One more and I'll be quiet a bit.  We use the Wiki collaboration which is nice enough as far as it goes (no spreadsheets, fatal flaw) and it occupies the server's native web site slot.  So the test copy needed to be another site.  Easy enough -- site setup is all GUI and works fine, but WordPress could not handle a multiuser blog coming to a non-standard port (other than 80) so I needed a second IP multihomed on the server.  How do you do this?  Go to Network in the System Prefs, click on the Ethernet interface and select "duplicate".  Set your IP address.  Done.
In summary a Mac OS X Server is a better server for a Windows shop than Windows Server 200x.
My bottom line for choosing Apple:  lower blood pressure.  I SHOULD be money.  After all is said and done, it's about money.  The incredibly more pleasant experience is a free benefit.  You'll pay more for better hardware, but way less in time and trouble.  And you won't be hounded on a daily basis to update the system.  Not that Adobe or Firefox are any better about it on a Mac, but the Apple approach to updates stays in the background.
Think different.  Simplify.  Focus.  Enjoy your work.

  • I killed my MAC due to the file sharing

I know you guys would want to kill me after you read this... here is what happened.
I was trying to share files from a PC to my MAC through my airport and everything worked perfect 'til I realized that from my PC I was able not only to access to my public folder but the entire HD and and my user name, so I went to the Sharing (Sys Pref) and I pulled the HD and while I was trying to denied the access from the PC I deleted the Administrator access, Obviously it denied the access but when I want back to my MAC I realized that this change wouldn't allow me to get into the System preferences or any other thing so I forced my mac to reboot and now all I have is a light blue screen after the gray screen with the logo... I have try to repair it with the instalation disk and didnt work.... PLEASE HELP!!

Ah, you are not the first, jj78, and probably won't be the last. This looks like a problem I asked about a few weeks ago (not mine, someone I know) and this was solved really quickly using the link in the thread.
    Hope this helps.
