Mac .app projector oddities

Hello.
I have a project that was working fine with the .hqx
projector files on the Mac. We'd drop them onto the Mac to unstuff
the file and the resulting player worked great locally as well as
via a DVD. With Flash CS3, we do the same thing with the .app
folder, however, on the Mac (OSX) desktop, the app doesn't play
with several attempts. However, after burning the project to a DVD
with Toast, the app works fine on the desktop. It only works after
the DVD is burned, however.
The only explanation I could find from Adobe thus far was due
to the path requirement on a Mac needing to be colon-based
(drivename:path:sub-path) versus slash-based
(drivename\path\sub-path). I'm assuming that isn't a requirement on
the DVD but doesn't explain why the app doesn't play on the desktop
initially and then works fine after the project has been burned to
DVD.
My biggest concern is with older Macs and if the .app process
will play fine from DVD on those computers. Is there a minimum
system requirement for this new projector? (e.g., Intel-based, OS8,
etc?) And, if there is any problem with older Macs, will I have to
drop my files back to Flash 8 to export an .hqx file to fix that
problem?
Thank you for any assistance with this.

Some additional information that I found out...
The .app file seems to be corrected somehow when a DVD is
burned. We tried Intel-based and pre-Intel-based Macs with no
difference in the ability for the original .app playing. However,
each time the DVD is burned, the player on the Mac desktop works as
expected. So, I'm trying to determine at this point what would
change to allow the project on the desktop to be playable. It works
for the duration, even with the DVD out of the drive. When the
project is removed and a new version is dropped to the desktop, the
new version won't play.
We never had this problem on previous Flash versions because
the .hqx file was unstuffed on the Mac. I'm thinkin' the current
problem is due to the fact that the original project was published
on a PC, put up on the network and then dropped to a Mac.
Anyone else experienced this?

  • Where put the files in Mac .app projector bundle?

I just read a technote in the knowledgebase on considerations for creating a Mac projector bundle. For OSX, the note seemed to suggest that you should place them in the Contents folder.  The example they give has the executable in the MacOS and a file called example, dir in the Contents folder. I am trying to test a bundle I created in Windows Dir 11.5 on a PowerBook running Mac OSX 10.5.  My executable called launcher was automatically bundled into the .app/Contents/MacOS folder   Then I copied my dcrs into the Contents folder, the first of which menu.dcr is the first one the launcher goes to, but can't find it.  I tried placing the content in the same folder as the executable first, but that didn't work so I read the technote.  Now placing them in the Contents folder does not work either.  That technote seems a bit old so I am wondering where the app files go now and if the launcher can use a gotoNetMovie "menu.dcr" to find the first file of the app?  Everything works in Windows, but every single app I have tried to convert to Mac has required major adjustments so I expect the same here?

    Thanks Rob,
I actually found that thread last night while looking for a solution from someone - I saw it on the right side of my question listed as - More like this, but have been waiting for one of my studnets to tell me if the test file I placed on the web worked or not. My PowerMac G4 can't handle these 11.5 .apps without crashing on sound and fileio etc etc. You also have to be careful not to forget to add the xtras to this new starter movie or script errors will occur.
It is really amazing that the placement of files in a bundle was changed in D11 and Adobe did not include this in their documentation or in the help file. In MX 2004, linked files would logically go in the same folder as the executable /Content/MacOS.  Now the bundle has no idea where the linked files are and you have to create this stub movie to tell Director where to search. Cross platform application development is still a very important part of Director development and so this change should be documented and there should be a chapter in the Using Director explaining that creating a Mac .app from your Windows project will likely not work without a lot of tweaking of paths, fonts, sounds, net commands, fileio, etc. etc.  You should also be able to type ".app" or "bundle" into the help search system and get something other than topic not found.
I will give you credit for your reply though - thank you!

  • How to download Mac .app projector made w/ Win Dir 11.5?

I recently upgraded to Dir 11.5 and see that it creates Mac projectors differently than Dir MX 2004. Before it created a nice .hqx file that I could upload to a web site for my students.  Now 11.5 creates an .app folder that shows up as a single file on a Mac desktop or on a USB flash stick. Unfortunately, when I upload the bundle to the web it now shows up as a folder when the Mac browses the web folder /setup/mac/examviewer.app/  When I crtl click (rightclick), I'm given the option to download the folder to the desktop, but it comes down as .html and the Mac will not allow me to get rid of the html extension and make the content an .app.  Without using a Mac, how do I make an executable file on the Windows development computer that can be properly downloaded to a Mac as an executable .app?

Thank you Mike for directly answering my question. I asked how to do it on a Mac and did not realize that a Mac could open them natively and how easy it was for a Mac user to do it. The dmg was recommended to me before and through my research and experimentation, even if I could remember how to do it on a Mac I wouldn't. Here's why: a) I have asked students are you familar with a dmg archive and most say no. This is a minor issue because if they well I would just explain what they are. However, b) it was a pain to dig out the utility that creates the dmg on a Mac and if you aren't a regular Mac user doing this all the time, you won't remember how to do it - at least I don't want to spend the time to try it again. c) if you are doing this on Windows, a dmg is not even an option. But now for the most important reasons d) a dmg is usually much larger than the files you want to archive and it takes time to figure how to select a custom size dmg that will be large enough to take your files and there is undisclosed overhead. For example, if you have 7 MB of files and don't want to use the default dmg sizes which are like 10 MB 100MB etc and create an 8 MB dmg you will find when you start dragging the files into it that it's too big and you have to start all over again.  Then you start experimenting with sizes and wasting more time since you don't know how much overhead is added - I think it must be around 5 MB.  I don't remember exactly, but if I am archiving files I think I would much rather have them compressed, which is exactly what zip does.  First shot, I added the .app folder to the zip and it was done and nicely compressed to about 70%.  When I later downloaded it from my web site on a Mac to the desktop - I just doubled clicked it and it popped out all ready ready to go. If I tried the dmg approach, I would have no idea what the size requirement would be since it is hidden in a bunch of bundle folders. Anyhow, estimating the size would take time and it would end up being much larger than the original files after the overhead is added. My conclusion as a professor who does research is that the zip advantages far outweigh the dmg.

  • Why is D11.5 Mac App Standard Projector asking for Shockwave Player 11?

I have created an exam study aid for my students with D11.5 and have turned it into a Windows exe and an App for the Mac users.  I selected no compression in the Projector Settings and selected player type: Standard on the Projector tab. On some student computers the Mac App is asking them to download Shockwave Player 11.  First of all, I created the Mac projector with no compression or Shockwave and  so why is it asking the student to download the player.  Second, even when they download and install the new Shockwave Player, which is up to version 12 now, it still complains that they need to download the player and the App will not play.   What do I have to do to fix this so my students with Macs can use my exam aid?   Please help!

This maybe a little off the subject... but here is how I bypass the 'requires Shockwave 11' bug! - while building my hybrid CD's.
I build the master cd image on my MAC...
For some strange reason - my cd rom burning software, turns my working director made mac.app into a 'requires Shockwave 11' bug? - if I make an .iso image???
So this is how I get around it...
Create the director app + all the support files.
run the 'BURN' cd rom authoring software!
    set to DATA & <Mac + PC> format
    Name the CD
Now place all the files across into 'BURN'
burn the cd (DON'T make or save an image!)
    close burn
test the cd (on both mac and windows)
< Make sure that the shockwave 11 bug is missing!!! >
if the CD works… How to make the master image!!!
use the copy function within the burn software to save an image file!
drag the cd over to burn - then hit save - not burn!
    save the image
a (DCD/CD-R Master Image) .cdr format
this will now be the master image for making cd's
if the CD does not work...
using the mac disk utility to create an 700 MB New Image
    Format : MS-DOS (FAT)
place all your files into the FAT image.
    launch 'BURN'
    set to DATA - <Mac + PC> format
    Name the CD
Move all the files from the FAT image, across into 'BURN'
burn the cd (DON'T make or save an image!)
    close burn
test the cd (on both mac and windows)
< Make sure that the shockwave 11 bug is missing!!! >

  • Mac App Store Export

Is it possible to export for Mac App Store with certificate etc.?
    OR
Will it be possible in the future?

You don't need a special export, you just publish a regular projector. You then have to strip out any PowerPC code, and go through all the code signing and packaging that has to be done for any app.

  • Publish to Mac App Store

Is it possible to publish a Director Project/movie to Mac App Store? I know it is possible to publish to iOs, but what about Mac's

  • New Mac App Store Compatibility?

Can Flash CS5 AS3 be compiled for the new Mac App Store? It would be nice to use one code base.

There are going to be steps in the process that I don't know about, but the stripping out PowerPC part I know, although I gather there is an easier way that the one I'll now say. But at least it will get you going.
    Look at this:
    http://hints.macworld.com/article.php?story=20060609195046756
Open the DownSizer Automator app and point it towards your projector. You get another projector that is 9MB smaller. The copy has the minor drawback of not working, but if you go into the package’s resources, and copy the "en.lproj" from the universal projector into the same place in the Intel one, the projector will then work again.

My 10.8.3 update did not install properly citing an 'Unknown Error'. Now, my Mail and Mac App Store aren't working. What went wrong and how do i fix it ?

I tried this and still have the same problems. If I open Address book or the Mac App Store I get the library rebuild popup and a hang. I created a fresh user and then things are better apart from the printing issue. Its clearly some 3rd party software issue but the crash logs are meningless to me. I used the excellent Etre check app from http://www.etresoft.com/etrecheck so I have a list of what is being loaded and can compare clean and crashed user info but as I cant work out which of the startup items, launch agents, launch daemons etc that  are causing the problem.
I have eliminated Dropbox, Mac Keeper and Witness, and it isnt related to my exterrnal LED cinema dispay or my external thunderbolt drives, or any USB devices if thats any help to anyone else. Info from Etrecheck follows -

  • Unable to login in to Mac App Store using valid account.

I recently inherited a spare MacBook Air from my wife (who got a new one). I deleted her user account, and set up a new admin user account for me. The machine is running 10.7.5.
Now, I am absolutely unable to login to the App Store. I am using my valid Apple ID -- for example, the same Apple ID that I used to gain access to this very forum. System Preferences accepts my ID. iTunes accepts my ID. BUT the App Store will aboslutely NOT respond. It will not load. I get the red "connection failed" alert, and then after several tries it doesn't respond at all.
It doesn't give any option to switch users -- perhaps once the original owner has used the App Store, the computer will never again allow anyone else to use it? It doesn't say that there is another user logged in. There appears to be no way of deleting and reinastalling the App Store. There is no cache file I can find to be cleared. There is no preference option. There is no information. There appears to be no way of fixing this at all, short of wiping the hard drive and reinstalling the operating system. Is that what I have to do? WHY IS THIS SO HORRIBLY DESIGNED? And why is there no support short of the forum? I hate this about Apple (despite being a long-time Apple evangelist and OSX devotee).
    Thanks.

The first thing you should do after acquiring a second-hand computer is to erase the internal drive and install a clean copy of OS X. How you do that depends on the model. Look it up on this page to see what version was originally installed.
If the machine shipped with OS X 10.4 or 10.5, you need a boxed and shrink-wrapped retail Snow Leopard installation disc, which you can get from the Apple Store or a reputable reseller — not from eBay or anything of the kind. If the machine has less than 1 GB of memory, you'll need to add more in order to install 10.6. I suggest you install as much memory as it can take, according to the technical specifications.
If the machine shipped with OS X 10.6, you need the gray installation discs that came with it. If you don't have the discs, order replacements from Apple. A retail disc, or the gray discs from another model, will not work.
To boot from an optical disc, insert it, then reboot and hold down the C key at the startup chime. Release the key when you see the gray Apple logo on the screen.
If the machine shipped with OS X 10.7 or later, it should boot into Internet Recovery mode when you hold down the key combination option-command-R at the startup chime. Release the keys when you see a spinning globe.
Once booted from the disc or in Internet Recovery, launch Disk Utility and select the icon of the internal drive — not any of the volume icons nested beneath it. In the Partition tab, select the default options: a GUID partition table with one data volume in Mac OS Extended (Journaled) format. This operation will permanently remove all existing data on the drive, which is what you should do.
After partitioning, quit Disk Utility and run the OS X Installer. When the installation is done, the system will automatically reboot into the Setup Assistant, which will prompt you to transfer the data from another Mac, its backups, or from a Windows computer. If you have any data to transfer, this is usually the best time to do it.
You should then run Software Update and install all available system updates from Apple. If you want to upgrade to a major version of OS X newer than 10.6, buy it from the Mac App Store. Note that you can't keep an upgraded version that was installed by the previous owner. He or she can't legally transfer it to you, and without the Apple ID you won't be able to update it in Software Update or reinstall, if that becomes necessary. The same goes for any App Store products that the previous owner installed — you have to repurchase them.
If the previous owner "accepted" the bundled iLife applications (iPhoto, iMovie, and Garage Band) in the App Store so that he or she could update them, then they're linked to that Apple ID and you won't be able to download them without buying them. Reportedly, Apple customer service has sometimes issued redemption codes for these apps to second owners who asked.

  • Downloads- Mac App Store

Though the App Store lists all downloads purchased or free; how can I automate the process so that all my Mac Apps downloads go to a folder in it self rather than showing on the dock or searching via Finder? Only choice would be open the App Store look at the download/purchased and use Finder to execute them.
I see no options in the App Store to divert the downloads to a separate folder?
    Any thoughts/comments?
    Azim

I think the Store app can track the downloads wherever they are. I have just downloaded from the Store an app I already have and which is located in a specific folder I created some time ago. The new download from the App Store got placed into that folder and NOT the normal /Applications.
So if it can work out that the app needed to be downloaded to a non standard folder, I'm thinking it can probably work out updates for an app wherever it is stored.
In any case, OSX is actually very good at finding apps wherever they are. You can store them anywhere and they will run - unlike another popular OS I can think of...

  • How do I use my Itunes credit on the Mac App store

I have a credit in iTunes which I wish to use to buy some apps on the Mac App store. However it doesnt seem to be taking that payment method. How do I solve this?

iTunes and the Mac App Store are the same account and credits redeemed for one are available for the other. The issue may be that you have not allowed for the sales tax that the US store applies in the final steps of a sale. US prices do not yet have the local sales tax added. If the credit does nt cover the total the sustem will ask for another payment method to cover the remaining balance.

  • HT203421 How do I get iphone apps in the mac app store? Also, my apps from my iphone will not sync to my mac. Why is this?

I've had my iphone 4 for a couple years, but I've recently purchased a new macbook air. For some reason, I do not have the option of syncing my apps from my iphone to itunes. I am currently running ios 6 on my phone, but I don't want to update until the apps are backed up to the computer. How do I resolve this? Also, is there a way to download and/or update iphone apps from the mac app store?

Connect the iPhone and iTunes will open automatically. Then, go to iTunes menu (on the menu bar) > Devices > Transfer purchases, and all the content downloaded from the App Store and the iTunes Store will be transferred to the MacBook. Note that in iTunes 11 you can choose the iPhone at the top right part of your iTunes window.
The Mac App Store is used to download Mac OS X apps, and the App Store is used to download apps for iPod touch, iPad and iPhone. You can't download apps for iPhone from the Mac App Store. Instead, you can download them from iTunes or from the iPhone

First things first: Pull down the Apple Menu and select "about this Mac" and tell us what version of OS X is currently on your computer.
