Mac/Apple TV Connectivity via ethernet connection problems

I am having a connectivity issue with my Mac and Apple TV. I am connected to the internet via cable modem and ethernet lines. I have my Mac, Apple TV and cable modem all connected via a Netgear 5-port ethernet switch (10/100 Mbps). I am able to connect to the iTunes store (internet) with either my Mac or Apple TV by unplugging my cable modem and reconnecting with one device "on", but in order to switch from Mac to Apple TV (or vice versa) it is necessary to sleep the one device, and reconnect with the other. I am unable to communicate from the Apple TV to my Mac iTunes without a direct ethernet cable between them.
I suspect there's something in the system preferences that I'm not doing. All devices seem to work OK in isolation but not together.
Any ideas?

cuatro,
welcome to discussions.
Your issue is with the Netgear switch. It needs to be a router and also provide DHCP and NAT. It might be able to do this by re-configuring. In fact, as you describe it as a 5-port switch, it's very likely that one port is on the WAN side (internet) and the other four are LAN side (local). Which model switch is it ?
The issue start with the cable modem, which will only provide one Ethernet port and one IP address to access the internet. Your Netgear should really then put up a firewall and provide up to 4 local IP addresses (a LAN) for sharing access to the internet. It looks like it's not doing this, but just sharing the one IP address (supplied by your cable ISP) amongst all the attached devices. This can be a nightmare, as you are finding out.
Let us know about the Netgear and we can help.
Just in case the Netgear is unable to do what we want it to, does your G5 have more than one Ethernet port ? Is it physically possible to connect the cable modem directly to the G5 ? (are the cables long enough?) Is it physically possible then to connect the AppleTV to the G5 ? If not directly, then via the Netgear ?
It may be that you will have to spend about £30 on a router with firewall / DHCP / NAT / etc, or £40-£50 on a top-of-the-range wireless-n router, which your AppleTV will love. I'm almost certain that your existing Netgear is sufficient though.

I want to transfer files from a Win XP PC to a Mac using Time Capsule via Ethernet connection.  Is this possible?

Sure.. the PC connects by SMB.. the Mac connects by AFP or SMB..
But you can simply share SMB directly from the Mac.. there is no need to copy files through the TC. Go to system preference, sharing, and turn on SMB for the folder you want to share files to / from on the Mac.
Make sure you have a common username and password also helps.
If you have a TC already can you copy files to it via the windows machine??

  • Mac mini, bluetooth connection problems

Hi, My mac mini (latest model) has recently got problems with the bluetooth connections to the keyboard and the mouse.
It seems to be some kind of interference to the wireless signal that makes the KB/Mouse to lose connection, and then
    connect again.
I assume that it was one recent update that caused this as it worked without any problems for months before it
    started by itself.
    Any tips?

  • Pple 24" LED and Mac Pro usb connection problem

    Hi,
I'm having issues with my Mac Pro 8 core (2008) connected to an Apple 24" LED. I have a Radeon HD 4870 graphics card installed in the Mac so I can use the Apple LED  mini displayport connection. The video works perfectly fine but to use the built-in speakers and iSight in the Apple LED I have to use the USB cables and connect them to the USB sockets of the Mac Pro. This is where the problem seems to be as after a time using the Mac it crashes in a strange manner and I get a few lines of coding and the Mac shuts down on its own. I've used Dr Botts extension cables to extend to reach of the USB cables which I thought maybe the issues and taken this off and I've also unplugged any devices plugged into the extra USB sockets on the Apple LED. I think it's something to do with using the speakers as playing video seems to crash the Mac also but once I unplug the USB cables the video plays fine, but without speaker sound. Has anyone had similar problems and have any solutions?
    Thanks in advance.
    Alec

I have had no problem at all.

  • Apple TV connection problem + Time Capsule

Hi there, I seriously need your help because I don't know what else I can do.
Here's the situation: if I want to sync a single movie (let's say about 1.3 gig in size) to my Apple TV (connected via wireless to my Time Capsule) from my iMac (also connected via Airport), everything goes wrong. I just click on sync in iTunes, see the progress bar slowly going up and as soon as it reach 40%, it just stops sending the data. I check iStat in dashboard just to realize my computer is neither sending nor receiving any data! I then open Safari and not a single web page will load. I then switch back to iTunes, click on the little X to cancel the sync and after 30 seconds, the Apple TV dissapears from the list and the only way I get back my internet is by going to my Time Capsule, pull the plug and reset it. I then get back my internet but I'm still not able to sync my movie to my Apple TV.
I tried reseting my computer, reseting the Apple TV, repair permission, trash itunes preferences nothing seems to be working. I don't know what else to do.
    Thank you for your help!

I wish I had a solutipn for you... I am having a similar problem which started in the last two days with my playstation not finding the network from the TC, although the AT! and everything else in the house can find it just fine. The connection in the AT1 is spotty. I wonder if setting the TC to "internet robustness" will help or hurt? I just tried that and will let you know if it helps. Also, often, the syncing stops and does not complete between our iMac (i7 processor) and our AT1.

  • Wrt100 and apple macbook connection problem

We have a WRT100 and having problems getting the mac to stay connected.
No problems with a Dell laptop. 2 Sony PS3s, Tivo HD, but after a few minutes
online the mac just loses connectivity. Any suggestions?

I was having the same problem. This is what I did to solve the problem. Went into the Basic Wireless Settings and: 1. changed Network mode to G only. 2. Which disabled radio band and wide channel options 3. Set Standard Channel to 11 instead of Auto. Not sure which one of these fixed the problem but my powerbook stays connected now.

  • HT4262 Is there any way to extend my Apple Extreme Base Station using an Apple Express by via ethernet or does it only work via wifi and being in range?

From what I read, the only way to extend my Apple Wifi Network is via another Apple Airport Extreme or Express using overlapping wifi zones. If I try to connect my Apple Express to my Apple Extreme via Ethernet, then this is guaranteed to fail regardless of how I configure the Express. Is that correct?

It is certainly possible and better....in terms of performance.....to connect the AiPort Express to your AirPort Extreme using Ethernet to extend the network that way.
If you are having problems with this, then your setup is not correct....or....if your setup is correct, you may have a defective AirPort.
We can walk you through the steps to get things set up correctly if we can get some basic information to provide the correct settings.
What is the model number of the AirPort Extreme?
What is the model number of the AirPort Express?
if you are not sure, look on the bottom of the Extreme and side or bottom of the Expess. The model number starts with an "A" followed by four numbers.
We also need to know what operating system you are using on your computer. If you have a Mac, click the Apple icon in the upper left corner of the screen, then click About This Mac and post back with the OS X Version number that you see there.
We will likely have more questions about your current setup to understand things a bit better, so please be patient.

  • Sharing Mac internet with XP via Ethernet

    Hi
I'm having problems sharing a MAC internet connection with windows
    I've done, successfully:
    Internet <--> XP <--> MAC
but now I want to do:
    Internet <--> MAC <--> XP
Is there a simple guide somewhere?

On the PC in a browser try http://17.254.0.91
Doesn't find the MAC site - hangs
How is the Mac connecting to the internet (ethernet
for example), how are you trying to share it (airport
    for example).
Mac connects USB Speedtouch USB ADSL modem
Sharing via ethernet connection 192.168.2.1 255.255.255.0 - firewalled
Firewall on MAC and XP switched on - even with XP Fw switched off it doesn't work. XP = 192.168.2.2 via Gateway of 198.168.2.1 255.255.255.0

  • Connect Power Mac G4 to iMac via ethernet

I have a G4 Power Mac running OS 9.2.2 with 400MHZ, a whopping 40GB hard drive, with 320MB RAM. As well as an 27" iMAC running OSX Lion 10.7.5 with the 3.4 GHz Intel Core i7 processor, and 4 GB 1333 MHz DDR3 memory. The iMac is connected to the internet via a Netgear N600 WNDR3400v2 router.
I'm hoping I can connect the two MACs through my router in order to transfer some files from the Power Mac to the iMac, and am looking for step-by-step instructions to do so, if this is possible.

    BeavisORButthead wrote:
The OS 9 File Sharing - Apple Support document link you offered was what I was looking for, step-by-step instructions, however it did not work. I was interested in the "How to create a small network" link within that document, but it did not link to those instructions. Perhaps the link is nit supported anymore.
I have both my G4 and my iMac linked into my Netgear N600. The Netgear router LAN settings are setup so that the router can be used as a DHCP server.
When I select "connect to server" from the Go menu on the iMac and type in the computer name or owner name it fails to connect. When I browse to find a server, the only thing that shows up is a numeric name that connects me to my printer(?) because it contains a folder named "canon_memory"
When I select "chooser" from the apple menu of the G4 and select AppleShare, nothing shows up in the "Select a file Server" window. I then click on "Server IP Address" button and type in the IP address of my iMac, I get a reply that reads "No response from the server. Please try again"
Can you tell if I am missing any steps?
I'm afraid I don't have any OS 9 & 10.7 systems that I can test on. I think it was tricky to get Apple file sharing to work on OS 9 at least via TCP/IP. Apple do not support OS 9 now, so I do wonder if the 10.7 AFP server will work well with it.
You may want to try the following for the connection server IP address
    afp://[your-serrvers-ip-address]
    or
    afp://[your-servers-ip-address]:548
    or just
    [your-serrvers-ip-address]:548
Obviously you should check that file sharing works on another system to be sure that 10.7 is sharing correctly. I would also consider using a USB stick, firewire drive or Target disk mode until you can get it working.

  • I have a TC which is connected wirelessly to my router.  I would like to connect a mac in another location via ethernet to the TC.  I can't seem to get it to connect.  Am I missing something?

I have a virgin Superhub which serves my wireless needs throughout the house.  I have a Timecapsule which connects wirelessly to the router with no issues.  I can backup my MBP over wireless easily.  I have now got another machine in a different part of the house that I would like to connect to the network.  It doesn't have wireless so ethernet is the only option.  I have a number of options 1) run cabling - not really possible  2) buy a powerline network system or 3) use the timecapsule to connect to the network/internet.
    I like option 3 because
    (a) - I don't have to spend any more money and
    (b) - my wife wont complain about cables also see (a)
Should using mixed wifi and ethernet clients on a timecapsule work?  if so is it a feature I can use out of the box so to speak?
    Thanks

No a TC cannot do what you want.. it is now in dumb stupid wireless join mode.. and it turns off the ethernet ports.. in case you want to use the TC as a wireless bridge to multiple clients which is plainly wrong.. (only airport express is allowed to do this since it has only one ethernet port).
Welcome to Apple. (The plainly wrong above is a figment of Apple imagination.. of strict network protocols.. but unhelpful for a home device. maybe also to encourage sales of expresses.)

  • Mac to Camera connection problems

I am a professional photographer and having an ongoing problem connecting my Canon EOS-IDS MKII camera to my MacPro (2x3Ghz Dual-Core Intel Xeon) running MacOS 10.5.5 for tethered shooting. I am using EOS Utility 2.4.0.3. I launch EOS Utility and then turn on the camera which is connected via a Granite Digital firewire cable (with LED) so I can tell that the connection is good. I then get an error message that EOS Utility 'Faiied to connect with camera. Check connections'
So far these the things I have done to troubleshoot the problem:
    1) downloaded and installed the latest version of EOS Utility
    2) tried each firewire port on my mac and the one on my 30" cinema display
    3) tried three different firewire cables including a brand new Granite Digital cable
    4) taken the camera to the local Canon service center, where they tested the firewire port on the camera and replaced the 'PCB interface' and '1394 connector'
Despite all of this the problem persists... Not sure if this is the best place to post this problem...or even if the issue is Mac-related, but any help on finding a solution would be much appreciated.

cool... I should add that I've been shooting tethered with this particular camera for over a year...without any problems... probably 2 or 3 sessions a week on average...with all the predicable strains on cables/plugs/ports. The connection issue only started to pop up (initially every now and then and then gradually with more frequency) a month or so ago... so on the whole I'd say set up has given me very good reliability/value for money. An extended warranty is definitely worth considering given that inevitably the physical strains on the camera/cable link will take their toll.... depending what you do with it of course...
    good luck

My Mac wireless mouse and my MacBook Pro works very well. The problem is that every time I start my computer, I must always pair and connect through system preferences. It rarely automatically connects. Is this normal?

Probably not. However, try clicking the mouse several times. That usually causes mine to "find" the Mac.

  • Time Capsule with Apple TV - Connectivity problem

I excanged my Airport Extreme to a Time Capsule. I copied all settings of the Air port Extreme as suggested by the installation process of the time capsule. Now my Apple TV does not work with eathernet anymore. Apple TV shows that it has a connection but the port on time capsule where the cable is connected to Apple TV is not illuminating. What is the problem?

You need to tell us a bit more..
But the whole network should be..
Modem---TC in router mode .. wireless and wired clients.
    or
Modem/Router----TC in bridge mode... wireless and wired clients.
    How was the Airport setup?
I recommend you redo the setup and not use the setup from the airport. Start again and run the setup so you have the TC in the right mode.
If you use Lion.. download and install the 5.6 airport utility (just ignore v6.. the two can live side by side).. 5.6 is a real utility.. a tool. .v6 is a toy.

  • Apple TV connecting problem?

I bought a Apple TV ( Part number: MD199X/A) and Kanex airplay mirroring for VGA V2-CAF (Part number: H9139VC/B). My TV has VGA input. I connected HDMI from Apple TV to VGA from TV. But the error message "out of range" was showed on the screen.
How can I fix this issue?

FYI: This is a user forum, you are not addressing Apple.
If you were told that it would definitely work then that isn't correct information. It may work, but there is no guarantee because Apple TV is only designed for HDMI (the requirements are stated on the box), anything else will not be supported nor guaranteed. As you see the other one, connecting with HDMI, is working.
Like I said, even if this unit (with VGA adapter) started to work you would be unable to use Apple TV to stream any protected content, and as it is not supported it could stop working at any time.
