MAC Authentication Bug in router firmware version 20.19.8
Since having FIOS installed a little more than a year ago, I have used MAC address authentication (filtering) in the FIOS router on my premises to limit wireless access to only the two computers in my home. While trying to diagnose an Internet access problem on January 17, Verizon tech support updated the router firmware to version 20.19.8 (Jul 2 2011). Since that time, I haven't been able to add more than one MAC address to the ACL (list of accepted MAC addresses). The configuration page appears to put two or three addresses in the list when I ask it to, but if I revisit the list after applying the change, only the first address in the list is still there.
I tried to report this to Verizon tech support, but was told that MAC authentication is an "advanced" feature and is supported only for customers who buy "expert" tech support. I'm not anxious to pay extra for the privilege of telling Verizon that they have a bug. Anybody have any suggestions? Is there a way I can report this bug to Verizon without being stonewalled by tech support?
ActionTec tech support replied almost immediately to my e-mail. Their response is that the router allows MAC filtering to be configured only from a wired connection, not a wireless one. I doubted this, since I've had no trouble in the past configuring MAC filtering from a wireless connection, and even now I can do so as long as I don't try to put more than one MAC address in the ACL. However, we dutifully hauled a computer down to the basement and reconfigured it with a wired Ethernet connection to the Verizon router. Lo and behold, in this configuration we could put two MAC addresses in the ACL without problem. Being on a wired connection does make a difference!
So, based on my experience, it seems that MAC filtering can be turned on or off and a single MAC address can be placed in the ACL from a wireless connection, but to put more than one MAC address in the ACL requires a wired connection to the router. This seems weird to me, but it's hard for me to imagine them doing this by accident. They must have designed it this way on purpose.
Anyway, I now have the MAC authentication configuration back the way I want it. I should be OK until the next time FIOS fails and Verizon makes me do a factory reset on the router before they'll believe the problem is at their end.
And I'll look into WPa, since the consensus of those posting here is that it's stronger than WEP, which is what I've been using.

Wrt160n v2 router firmware broken
Hi,
I just upgraded my router firmware to the latest version as found here: http://www.linksysbycisco.com/US/en/support/WRT160N/download Installing this version was really a bad idea though... My mac's could not connect anymore, after a lot of searching I finally downgraded like described here: http://audipages.com/router/. This worked but the connection is kind of unstable now.. I can not put the router in Wireless N only because then Mac's and Windows computer can not connect anymore.
Another thing is that the localized Dutch version of the site has a completely different firmware version of the same router: http://www.linksysbycisco.com/NL/nl/support/WRT160N/download....
So obvious question is: What is the preffered and recommended router firmware version for the WRT160N v2.
Thanks in advance,
LarsThe first thing is that it is not advisable to downgrade the firmware. It is recommended that to always use the firmware based on the model and the version no of the device..Area-wise the firmware does not differ a lot, however it is always preferred to use the firmware area-wise for the particular unit due to some limitation.
It is advisable to reset the router after upgrading the firmware. So reset the router for 35 seconds, power cycle the router and reconfigure the router from scratch. -

Folks, please be sure to check that ROUTER FIRMWARE is up to date.
After much time and effort with tech support on Verizon, Apple and AT&T, found that the iPhone wouldn't connect to my home WiFi, despite having my MacBook Pro connected wirelessly to the same router (DL 264/Verizon).
In my third follow up call to the Apple store---after being on the phone with Apple help for a longish hour or so---it was suggested that I check with my internet provider (Verizon) to see if my router's firmware was up to date.
I'll leave out the enormous PITA experienced and cut to the solution: it worked!

I was looking to see if Apple had updated the firmware version for my 2.7 because it has always been a little noisy. The fans kick up whenever you have the computer launch a big app like photoshop or garageband. It then winds down quickly and is pretty quiet. It has always done this. I looked at all the firmware versions for Power Mac G5's and could not find the one that my mac says it's running under system profiler. It says version 5.2.4f1 The one I have seen to download is 5.1.2f2. Is this a more recent firmware the number suggests that it is not and why is it that I can't even find the version I have. My computer is fine otherwise and I don't want to do anything that may damage it with the wrong firmware bu tif there is one that addresses the issue i would like to install it.
ANy help is appreciated. Thanks! I figured it was the case. It would be ok to slow down the processors because I am going to be using it connected to my HD tv for dvd watching ,itunes, and so on. So most of those things don't need the speed. And if I want to play games a little fan noise won't be noticed when I turn the speed to full.
Good tip. Even though I new about that option, I forgot that that would reduce the fan noise. With the ATI Radeon 800xt and their Ati Displays control panel you can scale the macs resolution to fit the hdtv perfectly without over scanning using the dvi connection. It's awesome. -

Login into your router, go to Advanced, on the upper right is an option for Firmware upgrade.
To login into your router:
the address is 192.168.1.1
username and password are on the router label ...
A caution: others (myself included) have reported that the firmware update available at ...
https://upgrade.actiontec.com
... is not necessarily the latest version. E.g., my router reports the current version as 40.20.1 while the upgrade site reports the available "upgrade" as 40.19.36 ()obviously an earlier version). I once mistakenly forced the upgrade and messed up things, until I finally reverted to the prior version.
I seem to recall that the explanation for this is that the latest firmware is usually pumped by Verizon and not Actiontec, which means all you have to do is let the router itself handle the chores. Check this thread for more details:
http://forums.verizon.com/t5/FiOS-Internet/ActionTec-MI424WR-GEN2-router-firmware-upgrade/m-p/401761...
BTW what version are you showing at this time? -
Westell 9100EM Router Firmware - latest version?
I have a Westell 9100EM FIOS Router with firmware version 2.01.02.00 . As far as I know, it's never been updated since the install several years ago since my update setting has been set to "Automatic Update DIsabled" from the pull-down choices in the Advanced Upgrade Firmware section in the Router setup screen.
All is working ok, no problems, but I was curious if there was a more recent firmware version available for download & install.
I found a link here and downloaded the firmware file (haven't tried installing) but I wanted to see if this was the latest version as the version # appears to be an earlier version.
The downloaded version # is A90-9100EM15-10_1.02.00.04 which would seem, at a glance, to indicate an earlier version # than my existing Router version.
Has anyone updated the Westell 9100EM firmware recently with the above version?
Solved!

WRT54G, Firmware Version: 8.00.2, Stops routing after a day, requires a quick 10-15 second power cyc... work properly for a day or so before powering down again….
I was using for years the BEFW11S4 Model without any issues before it finally failed. Due to loyalty, I went out over a month ago to purchase the current model. The problems did not pop-up until month of December… The issue had me thinking at first was the internet connection…
Any advice on dealing with this issue… Is it a Software and/or Hardware? It appears to be a software related condition…
For those other WRT54G users that appear to be having similar issues, regardless of the firmware, it would appear we all seem to be facing the same condition of resolving the issue after a power cycle…
Is there anyone out there that has already resolved this issue (e.g. Configuration changes)? Does anyone have input that Linksys is actively working on this issue?
Although I am sure we will find a solution, having to cycle the power is a bit disappointing since my older model had no such flaws with my current internet connection…
Thanks for the support out there….If you have an Intel wireless card you can try this. I came across this link on the forum a days ago and it seems to help. The problem is that my problem was much more intermittent than some people are experiencing. It mainly seemed to appear when undocked the computer or if there was a power outage during the day. I would be interested to see if it works for you or if I'm just chasing my tail. I've seen other suggestions for changing the thresholds in the router which may be related.

MAC Authentication does not work
My MAC Authentication does not work.
I have a ACS 3.0 server set. the MAC address is set in the user name field and in the password field.
I can ping the ACS, I can ping my AP, I can ping my client.
I don't want WEP and I don't want LEAP just MAC. So I set my authentication to "Open with MAC" My client has WEP set to NO WEP and authentication to OPEN
I have the latest drivers for both AP and my 350 Client.
I see that the client is associating and disassociating back and forth non stop. My AP log is full with the following message:

New Safari 2.0.3 displays some Router Firmware pages as HTML Source text
Hello Safari users and gurus.
I installed the new 10.4.4 Combo Updater yesterday, preceded and followed by permissions repairs and other maintenance, including cleaning Safari Caches. Safari 2.0.3 works.
My problem: 10.4.4's new Safari 2.0.3 displays HTML source text after I click "Save" from within my Linksys (latest firmware) router's web based administration pages that worked correctly with the previous version of Safari.
When I check or change my router settings, the initial router settings pages appear as they did with the previous version of Safari. However, with 10.4.4's new Safari 2.0.3, as soon as I click "Save" to attempt to save a changed router setting, the confirming info from the router is displayed as HTML source code instead of the expected HTML page display.
If I wait for the router lights to indicate activity has ceased and then reload the router's opening admin address, the page opens again normally, and I can navigate to other pages and see that the changes have been saved. However, any click on any "Save" changes button in the router's pages delivers another page of HTML source text.
I will watch for future router firmware updates to see whether the issue is resolved from the Linksys side.
Does anyone have any suggestions for improvement now? All assistance will be appreciated.
EZ JimThanks glefand. As you suggested, I tried my old iBook G3 that is still running 10.3.9, and it works fine for me.
My G5 DP also worked normally up through OS X 10.4.3. My problem only began after I installed the 10.4.4 update. I think the Safari update included with the 10.4.4 update is what is causing the issue with the firmware pages on my Linksys router.
Hopefully a future router firmware update (or Safari update?) will restore proper operation. If not, I will continue to reload from the router's Start page. The need to work around this glitch is annoying, but the actual function of my router setup works without problem, even though the pages do not display properly.
Thanks again for your helpful suggestion,
Jim

BruceYes, I posted this same information in the Video Surveillance section a few weeks ago. it was actually a Partner on the
community who found this and brought it to our attention and we fixed it.
Thanks for cross posting here, since you are right in it also effected this router.
And a big thank you for taking the time to collaborate some very useful information with the community. I have noticed your recent posts and I think they are well writen, helpful, and well organized. I also like your idea of turning some threads into solutions documents and resource labs perhaps.

Sg300 - 802.1x NPS - mac authentication not working
I configured 802.1x on a sg300 switch. It is working very well with some Windows 7 machines and a Windows Server 2008 NPS server.
Now I tried to get the MAC authentication running, on a 3850X it is working without problems, but every access request sent from the SG300 is declined.
My current port configuration on the SG300:
interface fastethernet1
dot1x guest-vlan enable
dot1x max-req 1
dot1x reauthentication
dot1x timeout quiet-period 10
dot1x authentication 802.1x mac
dot1x radius-attributes vlan static
dot1x port-control auto
switchport mode access
On the Windows NPS server there is following error to see:
Authentication Details:
Connection Request Policy Name: Secure Wire
Network Policy Name: -
Authentication Provider: Windows
Authentication Server: myradius.local
Authentication Type: -
EAP Type: -
Account Session Identifier: 30353030399999
Reason Code: 1
Reason: An internal error occurred. Check the system event log for additional information.
There is compared to the message from the 3850 the authentication type missing (PAP) and a not very helpful error message displayed...Still not working.
I tried different settings and (also older) software versions on the SF302-08P.
Also started to change the settings on the NPS (though it is working with the 3850X!), without success.
The NPS reports following error:
Schannel:
The following fatal alert was received: 40.
EventID 36887
If I search for this error, every source is pointing to certificate errors, but there should not be any certificate involved?!
... is this a bug on the SF302-08P? -
WRT160N Router Firmware - Download page incorrect
I am trying to check if the firmware on my new WRT160N was the latest (I have 1.02.4-CA). I found to the Linksys Canada support page for the WRT160N (http://www-ca.linksys.com/servlet/Satellite?c=L_Content_C1&childpagename=CAen%2FLayout&cid=1153781111465&pagename=Linksys%2FCommon%2FVisitorWrapper&lid=1146512181N01) On that page I selected Downloads, then specified WRT160N and clicked on the link for "Firmware" which took me to http://www-ca.linksys.com/servlet/Satellite?c=L_Download_C2&childpagename=CAen%2FLayout&cid=1153781261058&packedargs=sku%3D1175241703067&pagename=Linksys%2FCommon%2FVisitorWrapper&lid=6105812181B01 There are 3 firmware versions on that page and the newest one (5/14/2008) actually downloads the 4.9.8101 version of the MAC install wizard! The next newest version (1/8/2008, 1.02.2) on that page downloads the file WRT160N_1.02.2_US_code.bin which I sure don't think is a good idea to use over my Canadian firmware! I guess the website folks need to fix that. It doesn't look like there is any update to the Canadian 1.02.4-CA firmware version on my router?
Well try upgrading the firmware of the router & keep on holding tightly the reset button in such a way that power light is blinking on the router & then do a complete network power cycle i.e., unplug the power cables from the modem & from the router & then plug in the power cable to the modem first once all the lights are solid green you could plug in the power cable to the router & check out it will definately work!! or else you could try downloading the firmware through ftp.linksys.com & you should be able to resolve the issue.
