.mac Backup didn't restore (from iPhoto 05) properly (to iPhoto 06)

Here is my situation...
I had to do a clean install of my OS, so I backed up iPhoto using .mac's Backup software. I reinstalled the OS, so no iLife. I just got iLife '06 in the mail today, so I installed it, then ran backup and it said it was succesful. But when I opened iPhoto, there were no pictures in it! What is wrong? and please help me fix it! I think 95% of the files had been edited, so it would suck if I had to just re-import everything. Thanks.

Where did the backup place the library folder and what is the name of that folder? It should be titled "iPhoto Library" and located in your User/Pictures folder. If it's not and there's another folder by that name in the Pictures folder, then it's probably a new, empty folder. Move the empty to the Trash and the backup copy to the Pictures folder. Before launching iPhoto then, I would manually set the ownership and permissions on that folder as follows:
Setting Permissions for iPhoto Library Folder
1 - Select the iPhoto Library folder and type Command-I.
2 - When the Info window comes up go to the Ownership and Permissions section and make sure You have Read & Write permission and that the Owner and Group have Read & Write also. Others - Read Only.
3 - Then click on the "Apply to enclosed items..." button.

iMac crashed, trying to use Time Machine backup. In Restore From:it only offers Macintosh HD on ..... (grayed). There are backups listed below. When I click on a current backup and click on continue I get a "Select a Destination" with Searching for disk, but nothing comes up.
I am connected to my Passport if that helps, but I think that is where it is getting the backup list.
Any help on how to proceed?
    Thanks,

Thanks for your help on this. I was trying to restore from a new drive. The problem I have is that Time Machine will not let me do so, so far.
When I go into 'Restore from Time Machine Back up) I can access the Time Machine HD ok. But then when I go onto next page (Select a Back Up) the 'Restore From' option only has the greyed out name of my crashed HD (this seems wrong?). If I continue the process to erase starts and then stops, message says:
An error occurred while adding a recovery system to the destination disk.
it only seems to want me to back up to my crashed HD which I have no intention of using

  • Alum Mac Mini SLOW after restore from Time Machine backup of 09 Mac Mini

    Hi,
I bought a 2010 Alum Mac Mini (2.4Ghz/2GB/320GB/OS10.6.4) a couple months ago, and I restored it from a time machine backup from my old '08 Mac Mini (1.83ghz/2GB/OS10.6.4). All data moved successfully, but this machine seems 2x slower than my old Mac Mini.
    Issues I'm encountering include:
    iDisk sync extremely slow
    launching Apps slow
Trouble handling more than 3 or 4 open apps (Chrome, iTunes, Pages, Numbers)
Is it possible that this is an issue because of restoring from the backup?
    Thanks in advance!
PS - I'm a fairly intermediate-advanced user, no programming background, but solid on most other things.

    Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
If you still have the TM backup, I would suggest erasing the new Mac mini's HDD and doing a fresh install from its Install DVD and then do a migration of the TM backup rather than a clone. There is something in that clone that the new mini does not like.
You could also, as an alternative, try installing Mac OS X from the Install DVD over the top of the clone and see if it fills in the gap or corrects whatever the new mini does not like. This should not touch your data, just install Mac OS X Snow Leopard over the version already there. But you should always make a backup of anything that is not backed up.

  • I recently got a new iPhone 4 and finally plugged it into my Mac. I hit "restore from backup" and it deleted all of my photos. How do I get those photos back? My iCloud isn't showing them.

I recently got a new iphone 4. Before plugging it into my Mac, I had taken a ton of pictures with it. I finally plugged it in to update my phone and get my music from my Mac. In the process, I selected "restore from backup". After losing all of my new pictures on my phone, and not syncing my music, it seemed like the worst thing I could have done. Is there any way to retrieve these pictures? Any help will be appreciated.

The pics are gone.  This is what a restore is.  You erased your iphone, reinstalled your software, then added back your settings from the date of the last backup.
You should have imported your photos to your computer as you would with any digital pictures, before any restore or update.
    Sorry

  • Intel Mac Mini crash.  Restore from TimeMachine failed.  Reinstall from DVD failed

I am at a loss.  My Mac Mini (Intel 2.53ghz, 10.6.7, 4gb RAM) froze today.  Mouse would still move the cursor, but nothing responded.  After letting it go for perhaps a half hour, waiting for a chance to get control back or to perhaps relaunch Finder, I gave up and turned it off by holding down the power button.  On reboot, it would not make it past the startup screen.  I inserted the restore DVD that came with this Mac Mini, it booted from the DVD and I tried reinstalling OSX 10.6 from the DVD.  It proceeded to around 30% install and crashed.  I turned it off again, started up again form the DVD, and went into Disk Utility.  I verified the internal HD and it had no errors and nothing to repair.  This time I went directly to a restore from my TimeMachine backup.  (I had actually installed one new program today, and in case that program was the issue I chose a restore from the morning a few hours before that new program was added.)  The restore progressed to 86.6%, then crashed.  I saved the installer log to an external drive.
I took a few hours away from it, but came back after a few hours.  I attempted to boot from the DVD again, and it would not get beyond the Apple sreen.  I turned it off by holding down the power button, unplugged the power supply, and searched online for around 30 minutes.  After finding little online, I booted from the DVD again, this time succesfully, and am currently running a TimeMachine restore again which I started after I began typing this entry because, honestly, when I started typing this I didn't think it would boot from the DVD again.  At the moment, the resotre is at 12.7%, but considering it crashed at 86.6% last time, I'm not too hopeful.
Any thoughts or advice?  I'm not totally freaked out as I keep all documents on two external drives and backed up, in addition to having a 2tb TimeMachine drive with this system, all connected by fw800.  But... it's not like I don't want to get this Mac Mini working again.  It's from November 2009 an I don't have Apple Care for it, which I suppose means they'll charge me a fortune if I take it in.   (I'm grateful to have this 11.6" MacBook Air to work on.)
Until Disk Utility told me that the internal drive was okay, I was thining I should try sticking a new hd inside and reinstalling from there.  Not sure what to do if this TimeMachine restore fails.  (at 18.5% now.)
My thanks to any who read this.

Thanks for responding.  I forgot to come here and delete this thread.  As it turned out, I switched from trying to use the OSX Install disc that came with the Mac Mini and instead used a Snow Leopard retail dvd.  That disc worked perfectly.  Pretty disturbing that the dvd that came with the computer would not work, while a store bought one worked.  Glad I bought a retail version of OSX to hackintosh a dell mini or I wouldn't havebeen able to fix this.

  • My apps didn't restore from time machine. Please help!!

I had to restore my iMac from time machine. The apps didn't install. What'd I do wrong please help!!

Were your applications excluded from your backup? How exactly did you restore from your backup? Did you do it using Migration Assistant?

  • I want to backup my 2012 pics from iPhoto to disk.

Should I export what I want to the desktop and then burn? I have them backup up to TimeCapsule and another external just want to be assured I have something. After completing this how do I delete the files? I'm trying to make room on my hard drive. Thanks in advance. Rick

Are you trying to back up to optical media? Then export
    File -> Export
to the Finder and burn with that.
    This User Tip
    https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-4921
has details of the options in the Export dialogue.
You then want to delete the files from iPhoto for space reasons? Why not move the Library to another disk - keep all your photos together?
Make sure the drive is formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
    1. Quit iPhoto
    2. Copy the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to the External Disk.
    3. Hold down the option (or alt) key while launching iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library' and navigate to the new location. From that point on this will be the default location of your library.
    4. Test the library and when you're sure all is well, trash the one on your internal HD to free up space.

  • Why is the item count in Photos for Mac significantly higher after upgrading from iPhoto?

Since upgrading to Photos for Mac from iPhoto, I've noticed the number of photos and videos in my library is higher than what I had before. Granted I imported some photos into the new app since then but taking that into account there's still a big discrepancy.
In iPhoto 9.6.1, the item count is 13,394 and I have since imported 95 new items into Photos for Mac. The total then should be 13,489 but Photos for Mac lists the item count at 13,626. That's a difference of 137 items.
Even taking into consideration that Photos for Mac might be including the 32 photos and videos that were in iPhoto's Trash (now Recently Deleted) folder, it still wouldn't account for 105 mystery items.
Does anyone have any insight into this difference in the number of items?

  • CANT GET MY BACKUP iPHONE TO RESTORE FROM BACKUP

I had to take in my everyday iPhone 3G 16G to get it replaced under warranty. I backed it up before I took it in,and then tried to do a restore from backup to my spare iPhone 3G 8G. It will transfer all of the contacts, text messages, calendar, and such, but it wont transfer my apps to the backup 8G iPhone. Some of the apps arent available anymore and I dont want to lose them. What can I do? I hear people have this problem a lot.
Also, how do I back up the iPhone im using to keep anything recent so when I do a restore to my new iPhone that I get back? Is this possible?
    Thanks!!!!

How does not being able to transfer the apps from your iTunes library to your spare iPhone equate to losing the apps?
People do not have this problem a lot. There is no device limit for the number of iDevices that can be synced with the same iTunes library and iTunes account on the same computer.
Which firmware version was your 16GB running and which firmware version is your spare iPhone running? That can affect the apps in your iTunes library being installed on the iPhone.

  • If I preformed a factory restore, and didn't restore from time machine, how can I access my files that were backed up?

I wiped my Mid 2009 MBP and decided not to restore from time machine backups but now I need access to a few of the files from the pervious backup, how do I access those files? The previous backups are purple and inaccessible from the time machine window.
Details: I use a G Drive to do my Time Machine backups.

While in Time Machine, press the key combination shift-command-C. The front window will show all mounted volumes. All snapshots should now be accessible. Select the one you want and navigate to the files you want to restore.

  • Can you restore from last backup, instead of restore from factory settings?

To make this short, my phone is having a few problems. They have been happening ever since my last sync. Is it possible to restore from the last backup, or do I need to do a complete restore? And if the latter, what will be missing after the restore- can I just restore and then put all my music/contacts/video/apps back on? Will I lose any content, such as pictures I have taken on the phone, text messages, calendar events? Is that not what the backup is for?
I believe this is a simple enough question to answer, so thank you in advance!

When restoring an iPhone with iTunes, there are 2 options. From your iPhone's backup, which is the default selection, or as a new iPhone or not from your iPhone's backup.
Your iPhone's backup includes data such as most iPhone settings, email account settings, contact info, SMS messages, notes, recent calls, call favorites, photos in your iPhone's camera roll, and 3rd party app settings and data created and stored by a 3rd party app. All other data transferred to your iPhone from your computer via the iTunes sync process should remain on your computer.
Photos in your iPhone's camera roll should be imported by your computer as with any other digital camera.
Contact info and calendar events is designed to be synced with a supported application on your computer. Not a good idea to depend on your iPhone's backup alone for this data and the same for photos in your iPhone's camera roll since your iPhone's backup includes other data.
When restoring, your iPhone will be erased and the firmware will be reinstalled. After the firmware is installed, you will be prompted to restore from your iPhone's backup, which is the default selection. This must be followed by a sync with iTunes to transfer your selected iTunes content including 3rd party apps, and any photos from your computer.
If there is a problem with your iPhone's backup or with the data included with the backup, restoring your iPhone from the backup will also restore the problem.

  • New mac died without backup of iweb, restore from mobile me?

So, my 2 month old mac hard drive died and i had not backed it up yet.  Not a big deal except I had just put the finishing touches on my website.  My question is can the settings and info from the actual iweb site published on mobile me be downloaded to the new hard drive?  I hope that makes sense.  Thanks for any help, Jeff

If you didn't have a backup copy of the file that iWeb uses to contain the elements of the site and publish it you'll have to start over from scratch.   However, Chapter 2.3 on the iWeb FAQ.org site has tips on using some of the existing files, image, audio, video, etc., from the published site in the recreation of the site.
