.Mac Backup Program - Premature Launch

I like the simple-to-use program, "Backup" that I downloaded from my MobileMe account quite some time ago.  It allows me to create custom backups of various files/servers and store the backups at specified destinations.
Anyway, recently it has been launching everytime I restart my computer.  Not when I have scheduled Backup to preform, but all the time (and that's been a lot lately as I've been having quite a few issues post-Lion).
Any suggestions on how I can stop this?
Backup is not a login program.
Thanks for any assistance.

I'd advise you to drop Backup and start using something else.  There are a number of reasons for that:
With MobileMe coming to an end next year, the future of Backup is uncertain.  It's possible Apple may adapt it to the new iCloud service, but it's also possible they'll just drop it.
Backup stores your backups in a file that only Backup can deal with...  so if you ever lose the ability to run Backup, you can't access your backups anymore.  That's a major problem!
Backup has a history of not getting frequent updates.
Try some other software.  Perhaps Carbon Copy Cloner might suit your needs?  It's designed for cloning whole hard drives, but can easily be used to just copy selected folders from one volume to another, and can do its work on a schedule of your devising.

  • .MAC Backup Program

My version of Backup has gone haywire. I was using 3.0 and after a System Software Update Backup no longer worked properly. When I open Backup, non of the menu items such as "new plan, rename plan, remove plan, history, edit plan, backup now, restore, etc. are available for use. So, I downloaded the most recent version, Backup 3, Version 3.1 (v356). I still have no access to this program. When I open the Backup program a window opens showing my "Migrated Drive Plan, next backup schdeuled for April 7, 2006 at 3:00 AM." When I highlight this plan the radio buttons for "restore" and "backup" do not become active. Therefore, I can't do anything even after download of the most recent version. Thanks for any help, Bruce

It seems that you made a wrong turn on the main page of Apple Discussions & ended up in the forum dedicated to the word processing/page layout application, Pages. This is very easy to do with so many folders within folders. I think you'll get the best response to your questions in the .Mac Backup forum. The path to that forum is Discussions: Digital LIfe > .Mac Forums > Backup.

  • Moving to new laptop from .mac backup

My iBook (running Tiger) died last week, but fortunately I was able to quickly backup the entire hard drive using the .Mac Backup program beforehand. Now I've got a MacBook Pro coming (running Leopard), and I'm wondering how best to do a setup and restore. Should I...
    1. Simply restore the entire backup, replacing the existing Leopard install, and then reinstall (upgrade) to Leopard
    2. Expand the backup to an external Firewire drive, then use Leopard to setup the computer from that drive (assuming that's possible in Leopard)
    3. Partition the new hard drive and restore my old drive to one of the partitions (the primary initial problem being that my old drive has about 110 GB of data and the new drive is only 160 GB total)
    4. Restore in some other creative way I haven't yet considered
    5. Take my new computer to the Apple Store and let them figure it out.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated, since I'll be new to Leopard. I've got to get back up and running in the quickest way possible, but yet I don't want to do something that will cause me more trouble/work later on.

    Tim
I don't know anything about .Mac but I'd be surprised if it provides you with a full bootable backup.
You wrote <I don't want to do something that will cause me more trouble/work later on. >
That being the case I would strongly suggest that you procure for yourself a FireWire external drive, and on a regular basis make a complete bootable clone of your entire hard drive. It's the only real insurance for that rainy day when something horrible happens and your computer crashes.

  • Restore files to external hard drive from Mac's Backup program?

    Can anyone help me here?:
I'm trying to restore individual files that I backed up using Mac's backup program. I've selected the files I want to restore, but it wants to restore to my internal drive and overwrite the newer corresponding files.
I want to restore to my external drive and manage my backups without this program at all. I can't access any of the files I backed up with this program and it's taking up a huge chunk of one of my external drives.
Very frustrating, any help would be greatly appreciated!
    Josh

If you have newer versions on your internal drive, then why do you want to restore older ones in the first place? If you want to backup the newer files to the external drive, then you need to configure Backup to use the internal drive as the Source and the external drive as the Destination. I think you must have it in reverse - restoring from the backup (the external drive) to the source (the internal drive.)

  • Skydrive for Mac crashes immediately after launch

Skydrive for Mac crashes immediately after launch
Hi and thanks in advance for your help.
Recently when I launch Skydrive on Mac 10.8.3 it quits 2 seconds after launch. If I disconnect the internet connection Skydrive won't quit but the icon remains greyed out and the app waits for internet connection. If I switch to Guest user Skydrive launches properly.
Below are the things I have done but none have solved the problem:
Deleted and reinstalled Skydrive (deleted using Cleanapp)
Cleaned up the Mac using Onyx
    Reset PRAM
    Repaired permissions
    Checked Disk for errors
Removed the Skydrive folder that syncs
Removed all Login Items under Users and Groups
    Disabled firewall
    Added Skydrive in Firewall Options
Installed the previous version of Skydrive
Temporarily changed all the privileges of the app to Read and Write.
And here is the error log:

    Back up all data.
Quit the application, if it's running.
Triple-click the line below to select it:
    ~/Library/Containers/com.microsoft.skydrive-mac.
Right-click or control-click the highlighted line and select
    Services ▹ Reveal
from the contextual menu. A Finder window should open with a folder selected. If it does, move the selected folder — not just its contents — to the Desktop.
The folder you're moving has a name that begins with "com." It is not the subfolder named "Data" or anything else.
Relaunch the problem application and test. If it works now, delete the folder you moved. Otherwise, quit again, and put the folder back where it was, overwriting the one that may have been created in its place. Repeat with this line:
    ~/Library/Containers/com.microsoft.SkyDriveLauncher
Caution: If you delete some or all of the contents of the selected folder, but leave the folder itself in place, the application may not launch. Deleting the folder will cause it to be rebuilt automatically.

  • How do I get my files from apple's "Backup" program onto my computer?it

I just upgraded to the new operating system on my Macbook Pro. I had Tiger on it, and things kept getting messed up. The people at the Apple store recommended doing an "erase and install" so that it clears out all of the old program info. Prior to doing this I used Apple's "Backup" program that used to come with .Mac account to backup my information to my external hard drive. Now that I have the new OS installed I want to use the backup that I created right before I erased my hard drive to restore things back to the computer (Iphoto library, Itunes, files, Mail settings, etc.) I went to the backups folder and all I see is a bunch of folders. Isnt there supposed to be some way to put them all in their original locations? I need to get my Mail settings and bookmarks back from my Safari settings. I am really new to all of this, and thought I did things the correct way... but I am getting extremely frustrated since it does not seem to be as "easy" as the employee at the store made it out to be. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Yes, you will need the Backup program along with the backups you created. Time Machine and Backup are not the same.
You can re-download Backup from your iDisk where you got it originally. It isn't available elsewhere.
See Mac OS X 10.5- When to use Time Machine or .Mac Backup to back up data.

  • IPhoto 6 & Restoring from .mac Backup

Thankyou to all of the experienced mac users who post to these forums, most helpful to people relatively new to mac's.
I have been happily using iPhoto 6.0.1 and the .mac backup utility weekly. last night I needed to reinstall Tiger, then iPhoto - which went fine. I used the .mac Backup software to restore all iPhoto files to the original locations - which also went fine. I can see the 'Pictures" folder contains all the iPhoto photos and data.
However when I load iPhoto I have no photos in my library. I have tried the Apple + Alt keys whilst loading iPhoto and have selected all the options, but nothing seems move.
    Q. - Could someone give me advice as to how to tell iPhoto to display the photos which are in the Data folder ?
Thanks in advance - Paul P
    Powerbook   Mac OS X (10.4.5)

    Hi Paul,
Is the library in the Pictures folder named "iPhoto Library"?
When you reinstalled tiger, did you use the same username and short user name?
Have you tried launching iPhoto with the Option key held down until you get a message window? In this window you can choose another library to open. You want to choose your library in the Pictures folder. It might even be already chosen in the navigate window so look at the screenshots to help you out.
When you launch iPhoto holding down the Option key this is the window you will get.
Create a new library or choose a library to open
Choose to create a new library if that is what you want to do, or choose a library to open by clicking the "choose" button.
If you click the "create library" iPhoto will open with a brand new library for you to import images to. If you click "choose" then you will get this window.
    Open library
Navigate to where the library is on your computer, highlight it, then click the "open" button.

  • OS update breaks "Backup" program

    Hi,
A recent OS update seems to have had a bizarre effect on Apple's "Backup" program. (To be clear: I'm referring to the Apple-made software named "Backup", NOT time machine. This program has an umbrella icon and was originally offered as a download to Dot Mac customers.)
Basically, the Backup program no longer backs up files outside my user home directory! In fact, I am no longer able to add files outside my home directory to a backup plan.
I'm not sure which update specifically caused the problem -- as this was a silent change to backup behavior --, but it was within the last few months.
Has anyone else observed this problem? Is there a solution?
    Thanks,
    Mike

Backup has it's own forum, well-hidden in the +Mobile Me+ part of the +Digital Life+ section.

It works fine for me. But there are some restrictions/recommendations here: [MobileMe: Backup intended for backing up files in your Home folder, but not your entire startup disk|http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1061].
Given the warning about restoring such things there, I'd not depend on those backups.
What version of Backup are you on? It was updated to 3.2 in April.
Where are the files in question?
If they're in places that ought to work, per that article, try it with some different files; and/or make a small Test plan with some small files from such places.
If the backup runs, but fails or omits things, take a look at the log. Double-click the Plan in the main window, select the History tab, and double-click the "event" in question.

  • HT1175 will time capsule backup programs?

    Will Time Capsule backup Programs?

Great!  That answers one question.  Some of the "programs" are Mac and some are Windows but they are all in the Applications folder on my computer so I guess it will back them up.
Next question...I'm asking this because Apple is giving me a new hard drive because they have determined that my Seagate HD may have some issues so mine is being included in a voluntary fix.  I am performing a full backup and hope (and assume) that once I get the new HD installed, I will just be able to update my computer form the backup on the external HD and that my computer will be back to normal.  Is that right? OR, am I also going to have to reinstall all those programs on my new HD?

  • Can I delete a media cache file that has caused my backup program to fail?

There are 2 Adobe Premere files that are located under App Date, Media Cache files that are causing my backup program to fail. These files were created in August of 2010 and have been backed up successfully many times. However as of Dec 2011 the backup program has failed to complete and the problem has been traced to these two files. I have no idea what the files do but deleting them would be good if it isn't going to affect my Photoshop Elements or premere Elements or my picture files and their location. It appears that the files are tiny clips from music that I may have opened when creating a movie with music to go with the slides. The actual clip of music does not seem to appear in any of the movies I created, which is a bit baffeling. I'd appreciate any help on this. Thank you.

    Hi,
Can you share the name and path of the files?
Are you talking about Mediadatabase.db3 file present at: application data\adobe\Photoshop Elements\10.0Locale\en_US? If yes, you can delete this file. When you launch Photoshop Elements the next time, this file will automatically get created for you.
    Thanks

  • Restoring Pictures from .mac backup utility to a new G5

Does anyone know how to do this? The migration assistant would not bring all my iphoto library pictures onto my new G5. At the Apple store they tried to export the photos from my old G4 onto a external drive and then bring them into the G5. When I got a chance to review the photos in IPhoto 6 (I originally had approx 5,000 pictures on the G4) on my new G5, it was evident that many photos are missing. When I scroll through the Library there are now sections that show hundreds of white squares where photos used to be. The people at the Apple store said the restore function of the .mac backup utility should not be used to import photos onto a different computer because they are "tied to a different user folder" that resides on the G4 and not on the new G5. My guess is that I probably need to get these actually reimported into Iphoto 6 or copied into the dated subfolder that Iphoto 6 is "seeing" but which is empty. The funny thing is that my slide shows all tranferred but many of them also are empty. I almost wish that I didn't purchase the G5. Can any of you offer me suggestions om how to resolve this?
    Power Mac G4 and G5   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

    Polecat:
Do you still have access to the iPhoto Library folder on the G4? If so just copy it to the G5, either over a LAN or via Firewire and Target Mode into the Pictures folder on the G5. Then download and run BatChmod on the iPhoto Library folder with the settings shown here, substituting your account name for mine. You can either type in the path to the folder or just drag the folder into that field.
When you next launch iPhoto on the G5 the library should be complete.
    Do you Twango?

Thank you, "the-edmeister" -- You render a great service, one that lifts my spirits.
Your answer also taught me to be a little more persistent, as I had started looking at Preferences, and just didn't notice the icons (including Applications) at the top of that window that would have led me to my answer.

  • How to tell if program is launched from JAR?

I have a program that needs to launch itself at some point in the program. The class is called CalcSolidsWindow.
The only problem is that I launch it from Eclipse to debug, and it's not in a JAR. However, I pack it into a JAR to distirbute it. To do so, I put this into the code:
    if (runningInJar) {
Runtime.getRuntime().exec("java -jar [...JAR name...] [...arguments...]"); //JAR launch
    } else {
Runtime.getRuntime().exec("java CalcSolidsWindow [...arguments...]"); //Non-JAR launch (mainly debug...)
}The problem is how to set the runningInJar vairable. I've tried:
    File runFile = new File(CalcSolidsWindow.class.getProtectionDomain().getCodeSource().getLocation().getPath()).getCanoncialFile();
boolean runningInJar = runFile.getName().endsWith(".jar");However, that does not yield the correct result. After printing some stuff to the console, I realize that runFile is just the directory in which the program is running.
Is there a way to determine if a program was launched from a JAR or not? Thanks in advance for anyone's help!

  • My Mac Mail program no longer stores any files in my Sent folder.  When I try to send an e-mail it just spins.  What's up?

My Mac Mail program no longer stores any files in my Sent folder.  Moreover, the sent folder (off to the left) contains a highlighted "1" as if something is in there.
When I try to send an e-mail message, it simply spins.
This is new behavior for my Laptop of three years.  Usually, I have lots of messages in my Sent folder and can easily send e-mail.
I see no discussion forum for "Mail" or for "e-mail" so I raise this question here.
I would appreciate any help anyone might offer.
    Thanks.

Thank you for your reply.  Turns out, re-started my Macbook later and the problem disappeared.  Could this have helped?
