Mac beach balls for 30 sec before printing

When printing form any mac program ie) word, textEdit, safari the program locks up, beach balls, and uses about 90% CPU. Only after it does this for *about 30 seconds* the print dialogue box comes up and asks me to confirm the print, and then prints fine.
Any ideas on how to solve this? Might using the repair option on the system disks help?
A few other notes:
1. Can print fine on the Windows side via VMware fusion
2. I have run repair permissions and disk repair in disk utility
3. Running the most recent version of Mac OSX Leopard
4. The printer is hooked into the Mac via ethernet

When you say "Reset the printing system and add the printer queue again" do you simply mean remove the printer form System preferences and then re-add it again?
No. To reset the printing system, you open Print & Fax and move the mouse over the Printers list. Then, hold down the Control key and click. The 'Reset printing system' pop-up will appear. Click it to reset.
This will delete all your printer queues so you will need to add the queue/s again, but your driver software will still be on your Mac so you will not have to install the driver again.

  • Spinning beach ball for 45-60 seconds, then fine

For several months now, I've had the spinning beach ball issue on my Macbook Pro. Within the first 5 minutes after boot up, the spinning beach ball will occur, seemingly at random (no specific app or action), for 45-60 seconds. While this happens, the system becomes completely unresponsive. But after this occurrence within the first five minutes after startup, it never happens again and everything is fine - until I reboot of course.
I am running Snow Leopard and this problem was happening before I installed Snow Leopard, so that's not it. But one thing I did do, which I am semi-convinced is the culprit, is I replaced my hard drive with a Seagate 500 mb Momentus drive. The actual model # is SEAST9500420AS. I don't know for sure, but that's around the time this issue first started. I know there is/was a spinning beach ball problem with the newer Macbook Pros and they were attributing it to the hard drive which just so happens to be the same hard drive I now have in my Macbook Pro. There was recently an EFI update that seemed to fix the problem for the newer models, but mine is the first generation right when they went to Intel chips (bought mine in April, 2006). Problem is, if it is my drive, this new EFI update that fixes the issue on the new models won't install on mine.
I also did a verify disk and repair disk permissions, but that was no help. Another thing I found going through the discussion groups was that the problem could happen because both the Macbook Pro and the Seagate drive have anti-shock technology that could conflict with one another. So if you disabled the anti-shock on the Macbook Pro, it might solve the problem as it seemed to for some folks out there. But I did that and it didn't help either.
I'm thinking it's my hard drive, but don't know how to fix it. But it could be something I haven't looked at yet or thought of. I've been trying everything the last several months with no luck and it's been driving me batty! What's really strange is it only happens once and always within the first 5 minutes after start up. Anybody have any suggestions? Thanks.

I just finished doing lots of different tests to try to solve my problem. Didn't resolve it, but I did manage to eliminate some things and narrow it down further.
First I removed all my login items and restarted my computer. That didn't fix the problem.
So then I thought it might have something to do with Safari since that's one of the first things I open up when I start my computer and there are numerous reports in the discussions of spinning beach balls with Safari 4.0.3 which I have. So I purposely did not open Safari after startup. Problem still happened.
So then I thought maybe it has something to do with my internet connection. So I disconnected my internet connection and rebooted. Then I only opened programs that don't use online access. I leisurely opened up a program, did a few things in it, closed it, and then did the same thing with another program. Did some things with Finder. Purposely did not rush things. Waited 4-5 seconds after every operation's completion before executing another task. Never had more than one program open at any given time to eliminate any issue with two many resources open. You guessed it - the problem STILL happened. Not that it matters, but it happened when I hit Command-I on my hard drive icon to get the info pane. A fairly innocuous task. Froze up with the spinning beach ball for at least 45-50 seconds. Tried clicking a few other things while this was happening, but nothing. Once it freed up, a few things I clicked on previously suddenly became active and everything was fine again. Tried Command-I for a lot of different things with no problem. Response was instantaneous.
It pretty much happens 3-4 minutes into a session and then never happens again. And I think my test here eliminated several possibilities. Very frustrating. I hope this helps someone come up with a possible solution. Thanks.

  • Pages spinning beach ball for 2 minutes opening document

Every time I open a pages or numbers document I get a spinning beach ball for a very long time.
    Some examples:
36kb pages doc: 56sec to open first time; close, then reopen - 16sec.
    115kb numbers doc: 1min46sec to open;
    117kb pages doc: 2min29sec to open;
That's ridiculous, right? Or is it like this for everyone? This is after a FRESH install of lion on brand new SSD (everything else works great), and a FRESH install of iWork '09. It was the same with the migrated version of the app - I reinstalled it, including fresh plist files, thinking that would help. No difference. I routinely repair permissions as well.
    Here's my specs:
    Mac Pro 1.1 2.66 GHZ
    6GB RAM
    SSD Boot drive
Home folder on seperate drive (no latency with any other apps)
iWork '09 Up to date (pages 4.1 for example)
    Any thoughts are much appreciated.
    -FD

I have got the same problem, with Pages but also with "Password Wallet". There seems to be some problem with the "Mobile Documents" folder but I could not figure out how to solve it.
I tried to deactivate iClouds "Documents and Data" feature and thought this might solve the problem, but now I always get the spinning beachball - with "Documents and Data" checked or unchecked
Btw: I have a OWC SSD and wonder if the spinning beachball might have something to do with the SSD? But why does it only occur with some apps?

  • Spinning Beach ball for 1 hour after Lion X installation, pls help

I have the Spinning Beach ball for 1 hour after Lion X installation, pls help
How long is it going to take?
Using Mac Book Pro corei5 with all previous updates.
    Thanks

    This happened to me too.
I bought Lion and let it download and install.
I had to leave my computer while the installer was running and when I came back a few hours later it was disoplaying the mac equivalent of a blue sceen: "You need to restart your computer. Hold...".
I restarted and I get to the login screen, but as soon as I start typing my password I get the beach ball and then tha fans start working like crazy.
I upgraded from snow leopard and my home account is encrypted.
    What do I do?

  • Photoshop CC gives beach ball for a full minute during startup.

CC 2014 works fine on my iMac. However when trying to start key CC 2014 apps on my Macbook Pro Retina (current version of Mavericks), they hang during startup.
I uninstalled, ran CC cleaner tool, reinstalled, tried removing plugins, font files... I logged out of Creative Cloud and back in... I'm at wit's end, and have wasted way too much time trying to troubleshoot. Illustrator, InDesign load fine. Photoshop and Premiere Pro do not. Photoshop will eventually load, but after the interface shows up it will give me a beach ball for at least a minute or more.
I logged in as a Guest user and it started right up.
Has anyone else experienced this? Just wasted a night trying to get this too work.

I have the exact same issue... but haven't found a solution for it yet :-(

  • Mac beach ball problem.

    Hi everyone,
I have macbook pro mid 2012, i7 processor, 8GB of RAM, 750 Harddrive. It was running perfect, I partitioned the disk into two, and made one partition full with movies. Before it was OK, it start becoming slow so, I think it might be because of no disk space on one of the partition. I bought external harddrive and transfer all movies to that harddrive. It was still slow so I formatted the harddrive, made it one partition and install mavericks. It still shows the beach ball problem. I did hardware test, RAM test. All was fine. I tried to recover to mountain lion but the internet was slow so it could not be downloaded, also my wifi automatically disconnects after some minutes so l have to reconnect my wifi and start the download. Please guys help me, what is the problem with my mac?.......

I followed to step two, it was slow. The same problem continued here also. No beachball in Safe mode, but yes there was beachball problem in safe mode too. The internet connection disconnects frequently.
    Console message might help you.

  • Solution to iPhoto spinning beach ball for Book projects with too many unplaced photos

A few days ago I discovered the solution to this problem for a client using iPhoto 9.5.1 in OS X Mavericks 10.9.4.
    =====
TRIED ALL KNOWN SUGGESTIONS BUT NONE HELPED
My client had already tried repairing, rebuilding etc. the iPhoto Library, and I tried OS X's Disk Verify and Repair Permissions plus emptied the cache folder in system Library and in the hidden user Library folder (option-key "Go" menu, Library). None of this helped.
    CLUE TO PROBLEM
I noticed several of her iPhoto Book projects each had thousands of "unplaced" photos. In each of those cases, each Book project only had 10-50 "placed" photos used to order the book but thousands of "unplaced" photos. In a Book project, clicking on the bottom-right corner's "Photo" icon-button caused an extremely long lasting spinning beach ball making iPhoto unusable for long periods.
I discovered the problem by clicking once on an existing Book project's name in the left column of iPhoto, then letting go of the mouse with its arrow cursor hovering over the selected Book project name. Within 1-7 seconds, a little pop-up appears listing the total number of photos (placed + unplaced) in that Book project. For many Book projects, the total number was just several more photos than the number of "placed" photos, e.g., a Book with 25 photos showed "(37)" in the pop-up info by the hovering stationary mouse, meaning 37 total photos (placed + unplaced) are associated with that Book project.
    BUT...
...some projects listed over 5,000 (five thousand) photos associated with a single Book project that had only placed 20-40 photos in the final printed book. One Book project had 6,070 and several other small book projects showed over 1,000 photos. In each Book project with a mass of unplaced photos, clicking the bottom-right "Photo" icon-button caused a very long-lasting spinning beach ball, almost certainly because iPhoto struggled to build a huge list of thumbnails for the mass of unplaced photos.
My client didn't understand how to efficiently add photos to a new Book project and was clicking on the pull-down menu in the right column that appears after clicking the Photo icon-button within the Book project. From the menu she chose "Last import..." or other menu choice that added a mass of "unplaced" photos to the Book project.
She didn't realize that after creating a new Book project, she could simply drag an individual photo or multi-selected group of photos or an event or "faces" group from its respective library section and drop it onto the Book project's name in the left column, thereby adding only a small group of "unplaced" photos.
    USER SOLUTIONS
=====Delete mass of "unplaced photos" within a Book project
This works best for cleaning up smaller number of unplaced photos from completed Book projects.
    Problems with solution:
    - if the number of unplaced photos is huge, e.g., 6,070, the list of unplaced photos won't appear for a long, long time if ever.
    - even if the list of unplaced photos finally appears, there's no way to select more than one thumbnail at a time, i.e., command-a for Select All doesn't work, nor do shift-clicks and command-clicks for multi-item selecting. You must click one photo then tap the "delete" key on your keyboard repeatedly and fast for this to be practical (note: delete key presses are cached here (meaning accumulated until it catches up processing them later); tapping the delete key like mad then waiting for iPhoto to catch up takes lots of patience.
====Delete an entire existing Book project containing a mass association of unplaced photos
This is practical if you've already printed your Book project and no longer need it. My client chose this method for Book projects with a mega mass of unplaced photos.
    Problem with solution:
    - for incomplete Book projects in progress with a mass of unplaced photos, you'd have to start over after deleting the whole thing.
    NEED FOR IMPROVED IPHOTO FEATURE(S)
    (1) The existing "Clear Placed Photos" button within a Book project might be useful, but it'd be even better to also have a button to "Clear Unplaced Photos,” and this button should be available outside of the section that struggles to display thumbnails of large numbers of unplaced photos. Clicking "Clear Unplaced Photos" would do the trick.
    (2) An additional iPhoto behavior might help: iPhoto should warn with an option to cancel when adding a mass of photos to the "unplaced photo" section if the number of photos exceeds ??? (400??).
    (3) Add another choice to iPhoto’s special startup Administrative window (Repair, Rebuild, etc.): "Remove unplaced photos from existing projects. (Doesn't destroy any photos in Library)"
    Whew!

Like I mentioned in the post, corruption was probably ruled out by running all the Admin features at iPhoto startup (e.g., Rebuild, etc.). I also stated in my post that I also ran a Disk Verify and Repaired Permissions in OSX (via Disk Utility). I also emptied system Library cache files as I stated in my post.
I was paid to figure out the solution and am not getting paid to troubleshoot for Apple. The more unplaced photos there are in a Book project, the longer it takes to build thumbnails. It's an old general problem in computing when building lists on the fly.
The delay happened for all Book projects with lots of unplaced photos (almost*** certainly more than Apple imagined a user would use), and the beach ball delay was proportional to the number unplaced photos, which super large numbers of photos.
I very much doubt photos are corrupt. But Apple will probably figure it out. It was EASILY reproducible. Try it with different number of unplaced photos known not be corrupt (they display fine elsewhere and iPhoto's and Disk Utlity's admin Verify, Repair etc features show no problems).
    I'm done with this.
My client's iPhoto works well now and she knows how avoid placing exorbitant numbers of unplaced photos into her project. I'm not getting paid to answer all this, so good night.

  • Finder freezes (spinning beach ball) for minutes when in column view

Just in the last weeks, I get the spinning beach ball when I try to select an item in the column view. Doesnt happen with a folder, which just opens up another pane.
The beach ball continues for a couple of minutes, then it stops and the item is viewable.
This happens also when trying to open files from applications (in the column view)
    Powermac G4, Dual 1.0ghz   Mac OS X (10.4.3)

First, try using Disk Utility to repair your startup disk (hard drive) as shown in Dr.Smokes repair thread.
Doing the things in his link is a good start for a monthly maintenance program.
If that does'nt help, check out his Spinning Beachball link.
    Cheers!

  • P965 Platimum shut down for 2 sec before booting

    Hi hi,
    I noticed a strange problem...
My P965 Plat board will shut down for 2 - 3 sec before booting up window. Meaning, when you pressed the power button to start the PC, the fan will turn for 1 sec then everything stop for awhile and after 2 sec everything back to normal to boot the window.
Have anyone encounted this problem before. Apart from this everything is ok after the boot up.
    My build is:
    C2D E6400
    P965 Platimum
    2 GB 667Mhz RAM
    250 GB of HDD
    XpertVision 7600GS DDR3
    Artic cooler pro 7

I would like to know what is going on with this problem
Yesterday i assembled my new system
    P965 Platinum
    e6600
    2 GB 800
    2 HDD
    1 DVDRW
    7600gt
    1 floppy
    PSU HEC Windmill 385 18A/12V
When i switched on the system i noticed this peculiar behavior and then when the boot screen came up my floppy got fire.(we are talking a lot of smoke and the wire sheathing got melted for about 10cm from the floppy.
I have a suspicion that the floppy short circuited because the pin somehow managed to clip incorrectly although i am not sure because i have done it about 1 million times ( i am a technician and i have assembled a zillion machines) ,probably the floppy input has broken and the floppy power pin slipped.
I very much concerned if this is a grounding issue
I have checked the system afterwards with the same PSU and as far M/B CPU and memory seems to be OK (At least i got into BIOS and they seem to be in place .......one strange thing 800 MHZ ram (4-4-4-12) where shown in Cell menu as 533 MHZ does this mobo has detection problems ????????) ...but the strange switching on-off was there...
If there are groundings issues could these related to the fact that i have used for the first time plastic washer on the screws that screw on the standoffs
    I am going to purchase a new 400W enermax liberty ( 12 V1 ->20a , 12 V2 -> 20A ,Combined 30A....my wife is going to kill me.....   )
But if grounding is the issue i have to be certain that it wont kill something more expensive....:(
i am going to try to remove the washers but if this fail i don't know what i would do.....

  • Saving with Logic crashes (spinni9ng beach ball for EVER!)

The last couple of days have elapsed and ive been doing some heavy recording, i came back today to resume and every time i try to save my work, change any setting, or do practically anything, even record (toggling record button i mean) just brings up the spinning beach ball of death and it doesnt recover. Ive tried re-installing logic with no success. I can still transfer files between arrange pages so there is still some functionality.......
Now last night i was very very drunk and i messed about with a few thing i shouldnt have, but pretty much have no memeory of exactly what those things were. I figured a fresh install of the program would just revert me back to factory settings but im still having the same problems.
Any one got any ideas with this? Apart from 'dont drink and record' any suggestions will be taken on board very gratefully.
    Ewan.

OK, I was having this problem and it was driving me nuts, and finally I launched a bunch of Google searches and came up with a little article here:
    feed://docs.info.apple.com/rss/popular/logic.rss
So I realized that I have shapeshifter going and that it definately changes the UI, and even though the article was talking about opening files I thought it might apply. I was using the defaulty aqua setting on shapeshifter but I went ahead and added Logic Express to the exceptions in Shapeshifter and the fired up Logic. I had now further spinning ball issues, in either saving or opening or anything. So if you are using Shapeshifter or some other UI altering software, try disabling it or uninstalling it or having it ignore Logic. It might help.

  • Printing from adobe on win xp hangs for 3-8 sec before printing

On networked printers (any of them) Adobe will hang for a short time (perhaps while spooling job) then will continue with printing. While most users dont notice, We have had a few complaints. This happens while printing from the web or from adobe reader.

Problem solved. Does only happen with the Internet Explorer 32bit.
With Internet Explorer 64bit it doesn't happen.

  • Black screen for 45 secs before boot

Every time I start my computer, either cold start or a reboot, it takes 15 seconds before I hear the chime, and then it takes another 45 seconds before the grey screen with the Apple logo comes up. At about 43 seconds I hear the fan for my video card turn on. Once it's past that point, everything continues as normal.
I've only been noticing this for the last week. Perhaps that is because I just started using Boot Camp last week. Before that I only restarted for software updates, but I'm pretty sure this problem is new.
Here is what I've tried: repaired permissions on my boot drive; pulled each of my three hard drives from the tower, one at a time; reset PRAM; reset SMC; reinstalled factory memory.
None of these changed anything. Any ideas? I'm assuming it's a hardware problem since pulling the drives didn't change anything. Windows is on a different drive from the Mac OS, so I would think that if it was something with one of the drives, pulling them would have fixed the problem.

Have you tried running the apple hardware test, this should tell you if you have any issues with the actual hard drives themselves. Also diskwarrior to see if there's anything gone wrong with the OS.

  • Beach ball for 20 seconds near beginning of every track

Whenever I start a music track in iTunes, it plays normally for exactly ten seconds, then iTunes goes unresponsive and beachballs for exactly twenty seconds before becoming responsive again.
The music continues playing normally while iTunes is beachballing; there is not a single jump or stutter in the playback. I simply can't use the app between 0:10 and 0:30 of any track.
The same thing happens if I pause a track and then unpause it. If I pause it at 0:36 and then unpause it, it will play normally until 0:46, then freeze (while still playing back), then become responsive again at 1:06.
    Any ideas?

That is about when iTunes updates and rewrites its library database (unfortunately, iTunes does not use a real database, so has to re-write the whole thing every time it makes a change). iTuens won't let you do anything while it is writing its database. But that should not take 20 seconds.
Try opening Activity monitor, and watching disk activity. You'll probably see it writing while iTunes is hung. The question then becomes, why is it taking so long?
Activity monitor will tell you how fast it is writing to data to disk. With an SSD it should be over 100MB/s, but my guess is you are not seeing that speed.
