Mac Book Air Startup Memory Almost Full

How do I free up memory if I already:
emptied trash
keep most everything in cloud storage (dropbox)
unchecked all movies in itunes
Thanks

You can clear out your downloads folder, and your Mail Downloads folder.
You can also uninstall any apps you aren't using.

Is it possible to add more flash memory to my Macbook Air? I'm filling it up fast with machine embroidery files.
    Thanks

You can upgrade SSD with several "do it yourself" packages, though it's fairly expensive.

  • After 10.8.5 update on Mac Book Air; startup fails during spinning wheel

The 10.8.5 update was applied and now startup fails during the spinning pinwheel. Initially the screen shows a Gray apple logo and an empty progress bar for a brief (1 sec). Then the spinning pinwheel appears for a few seconds and everything shuts down. I have tried resetting the PRAM, booting from an external drive which allows me to run disk utilites but no help.
    Any ideas.

    Shut down your Mac.
Wait about then seconds then restart your Mac while holding down the Command + R keys.
From there you should be able to access the built in utilities to repair the disk and restore OS X using OS X Recovery

  • Mac book air.  its startup disk is jammed full.  frozen

my assistant has a mac book air.  its startup disk is jammed full.  I was able to access iphoto so she could delete some files.  The computer wont load the dock so i can empty the trash.  what can I do to free up space and get the machine running again

Then you're in luck. Start the MBA in target disk mode and connect it to the MBP with a Thunderbolt cable. The internal drive of the MBA will mount on the MBP as if it were an external drive. Copy some of the files, then delete the originals. You should have at least 9 GB of free space when you're done, preferably much more to allow for expansion.

how do i get more memory on my mac book air? is says that i can add 2 more gig ??? or wat files can i delete

Macbook Air memory is soldered to the logicboard.
You can only get 4GB or 8GB (2012 Models) in the Air when you order it that way.  Otherwise, you're stuck with 2GB.
Unless you're talking about hard drive space - then it is upgradeable - click HERE to see which one corresponds to your model.

  • Increase mac book air memory storage

    hello  to every one,
i got a mac book air running os x mavericks  13 inch and has an HDD of 128giga, is that possible for me to increase the memory or replace the hard disk?

The memory is not upgradeable after the original purchase but SSD (it has an SSD not a HDD) may be depending on how old it is. The following is a link to one reputable place that has SSD upgrades for older models: http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/SSD/OWC/Air-Retina

Memory? No, the RAM is permanently soldered to the Mainboard, and there is no proviso for expansion.
If instead, you are speaking of the 128 GB SSD, then it may be possible to i ncrease the storage. See macsales.com

  • I have a 2nd gen Mac book air with Lion. The hard disk has filled up even though i keep my data , music etc on hard drive . I used disk inspector to find where problem was and it is 20GB in the hidden files under the user directory can i resolve this ?

I have a 2nd Gen MAc book Air with Lion .  The 60GB hard disc has quickly filled up despite me keeping most of my data on a portable hard drive .  I used disk inspector to locate the problem but found that it was was in 20 GB of hidden files in my user directory .  Is this correct and is there anything i can do about it ? Using disk inspector you can not see individual hudden diretories or files. I did unhide them but there is a mass of diretories etc and so no way i could see if this is one or multiple files using the space. Library System and  Applications are at 4 3 and 3 GB respectvely.  The data I actually keep on there is 9GB    Thanks for any help

I think the problem is Quick Time Player. I am using OS 10.6.8 by the way.
    I tried it out again.
I had about 26 GB of space before I played an .avi video.
After the movie started to play (it was slow to load), I got a warning message that my startup disk was full. I opened Disk Utility and it told me I had no space left (about 20 MB or something like that was left).
I watched to the end of the movie.
    Then I quit Quicktime Player.
And I shut down the computer.
I turned on the computer and checked Disk Utility. I have about 26 GB of space.
I think for some reason Quicktime Player uses up a lot of the disk space when it runs movies that are problematic. This movie I was watching did not open with vlc.
I normally use vlc to watch movies.
Probably it doesn't use up this much space when the movie is OK.
I think there's a problem with this particular movie. It is about 50 MB so it's not that big a file. I watch .smi subtitles with it. The Quicktime Player automatically loads the subtitle file in this case because the subtitle file has the same name as the movie file.
I watched about 10 movie files from the same series that I downloaded together and did not have any problem watching them. I watched them on vlc. But this latest movie had problems I think (as I repeat). It did not load on vlc even though I waited for a minute, and normally movies load instantly on vlc.
So I think that movie file caused problems. It made QT player use up a lot of hard disk space.
I had better avoid watching that movie in the future. I don't want it to wreck my hard drive.
So to sum up, everything is back to normal. I have the hard disk space that I should have. However, I am scared of damaging my hard drive due to shonky movie files that eat up all the space when they are played using QT player, and so I will not watch those files in the future, as I do not know why the files do that.

  • I sold my Mac Book Air.How do I remove my account from it?

I sold my Mac Book Air. 128 GB SSD. OSX 10.7.5 How do I get my name off it, and let the new owner register it so they can get all the upgrades?
    Thank you.

Follow these instructions step by step to prepare a Mac for sale:
Step One - Back up your data:
           A. If you have any Virtual PCs shut them down. They cannot be in their "fast saved" state. They must be shut down from inside Windows.
           B. Clone to an external drive using using Carbon Copy Cloner.
              1. Open Carbon Copy Cloner.
              2. Select the Source volume from the Select a source drop down menu on the left side.
              3. Select the Destination volume from the Select a destination drop down menu on the right
                  side.
              4. Click on the Clone button. If you are prompted about creating a clone of the Recovery HD be
                  sure to opt for that.
Destination means a freshly erased external backup drive. Source means the internal
                   startup drive.
Step Two - Prepare the machine for the new buyer:
              1. De-authorize the computer in iTunes! De-authorize both iTunes and Audible accounts.
2, Remove any Open Firmware passwords or Firmware passwords.
              3. Turn the brightness full up and volume nearly so.
              4. Turn off File Vault, if enabled.
              5. Disable iCloud, if enabled: See.What to do with iCloud before selling your computer
Step Three - Install a fresh OS:
         A. Snow Leopard and earlier versions of OS X
              1. Insert the original OS X install CD/DVD that came with your computer.
              2. Restart the computer while holding down the C key to boot from the CD/DVD.
              3. Select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu; repartition and reformat the internal hard drive.
Optionally, click on the Security button and set the Zero Data option to one-pass.
              4. Install OS X.
              5. Upon completion DO NOT restart the computer.
              6. Shutdown the computer.
         B. Lion and Mountain Lion (if pre-installed on the computer at purchase*)
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because
it is three times faster than wireless.
              1. Restart the computer while holding down the COMMAND and R keys until the Mac OS X
                  Utilities window appears.
              2. Select Disk Utility from the Mac OS X Utilities window and click on the Continue button.
              3. After DU loads select your startup volume (usually Macintosh HD) from the left side list. Click
on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
              4. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Optionally, click on the Security button
and set the Zero Data option to one-pass.
              5. Click on the Erase button and wait until the process has completed.
              6. Quit DU and return to the Mac OS X Utilities window.
              7. Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion and click on the Install button.
              8. Upon completion shutdown the computer.
*If your computer came with Lion or Mountain Lion pre-installed then you are entitled to transfer your license once. If you purchased Lion or Mountain Lion from the App Store then you cannot transfer your license to another party. In the case of the latter you should install the original version of OS X that came with your computer. You need to repartition the hard drive as well as reformat it; this will assure that the Recovery HD partition is removed. See Step Three above. You may verify these requirements by reviewing your OS X Software License.

  • Startup Disk Almost Full

I went to use my iMac last night and noticed that sometime between the time I last used it that morning to the time I used it in the evening I lost about 50GB and got a "Startup Disk Almost Full" error message. When I did a "Get Info" on the iMac's HD it said zero space available. I rebooted and did everything I could think of to see if it was just a glitch, but it still said zero space available. I ended up using the Leopard Install Disk to restore from a Time Machine Backup that was done about the time I had last used the iMac and somehow came out with 119GB of free space. At the time the back was made my HD had only about 50GB of free space so I am not sure where all the extra space came from. The good news is that it looks like Time Machine did a great job of restoring the Mac and I haven't discovered anything missing, at least so far. The bad news is that I continue to have a lot of problems with Leopard; this being only one minor one. Just wanted to see if anyone else has had this "Disk Almost Full" error and were able to diagnose it.

Thanks. I had already used Time Machine to restore to a previous backup and fixed the problem that way. Next time this happens I will try to figure out what files are consuming all the space and see if that helps me determine the cause of massive memory loss.

  • My MAC book air keeps shutting down alone, what could I do?

since yesterday my mac book air keep shuting down alone with full battery, why is that? what could I do? Im working on my thesis so I really need my computer.

If this is a new Macbook Air - return it and ask for a replacement. You seem to be having this issue (the one which I described) which is still ongoing and occurring with new Machines. Apple has (in the US) a <14 day return policy do not let it expire. Especially if it occurs while plugged into mains power.
If it is not a new machine one other sometime/part-time cure is an SMC reset or a PRAM/NVRAM reset.
    Resetting NVRAM / PRAM
    Shut down your Mac.
Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command (⌘), Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
    Turn on the computer.
Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys before the gray screen appears.
Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
    Release the keys.
There is also a Facebook Page about the problem
