Mac Book power issues.

My Mac Book Pro will no longer power up. What is the likely problem?

Hello there Radar47,
If your MacBook Pro is still not turning on, I would recommend you use the troubleshooting information in the following article to help isolate and hopefully resolve the issue here, named:
Troubleshooting: My computer won't turn on
If your computer won't turn on, try each of these steps:
Verify you have a good connection from your Mac to the wall outlet by confirming the power cord and adapter if present are securely connected and plugged in. To check if the wall outlet is working, plug in a lamp or other electrical device.
If the wall outlet is working and you continue to have no power try another power cord or adapter if available. If it works you may need a replacement cord or adapter.
Note: See Apple Portables: Troubleshooting MagSafe adapters for further troubleshooting with MagSafe adapters.
Disconnect all accessories that are plugged in to the computer, such as a printer, hub, or other mobile device.
If your Mac supports user-installable memory, solid state drive, or hard drive, and you recently installed any of these, make sure they are installed correctly and are compatible with your computer. If possible, reinstall the original memory or drive into the computer to find out if the behavior persists afterwards.

I recently moved my MacPro to a new building. Almost immediately it started taking a long time to boot. Twice it hung on the blue screen for approximately 10 minutes before continuing to the login screen. Problems were intermittent, sometimes it would boot fine. Then it started having trouble powering on at all. It would click and the light would turn on and off in less than 5 seconds. I took it to a different building: no powering on. I took it twice to the Apple store for the same problem, it turned on both times so I had to take it back with no help. Back at the original building, the computer turns on sometimes after leaving it unplugged overnight. I suspected an issue with the power in the building so I plugged it into a UPS. Initially it was only on a Surge Protector. On one recent occasion I accidentally nudged it with my knee and it powered down and back up. On another occasion I was sitting still watching a video and it powered down and back up with no intervention.
This will not reproduce at the Apple store. Each time it is there it has booted up perfectly using both my power cord and Apple’s power cord. Don’t know what to do next.
Any thoughts on what to try before replacing power supply and power cable? Is it possible this is not a power-related issue?

make sure to use something in 1000VA or better for your UPS and that it can support your system. May seem like $200 is a lot but then they work and give you adequate shutdown or to ride out a 5 minute power issue.

you don't need to nor is it that effective to leave unplugged over night or something.
hit the power on for 10 seconds while every cord and device is unplugged though.

  • Mac Pro power issue...

Wondered if anyone else had this issue. I have a Mac Pro from mid 2008. Recently, it has done the following:
    - From a 'cold' start, it will power up for 3-4 secs and then power off again. It will not reach the grey screen.
    - It will only fully power up after about 30-40 attempts...
Also, it will now sometimes just power off completely without warning.
Anyone else had these issues? It doesn't seem to be a graphics card issue.

Some more info on this problem, hopefully someone can help.
    More system details:
    Early 2008 Mac Pro
No extra memory or internal installations - just 2gb ram.
I found another thread which describes my problem completely....
"Problem 1: In the morning when I turn it on, on some occasions it will power on for 5 or so seconds, then power right back off again. Sometimes this happens after 5, 10 or even 20 seconds (right in the middle of OS X or Windows boot). The only thing I note is that if it can get as far as the boot selector (hold alt at boot) screen, it won't cut out at that point, only sometimes after I wait a moment then select a boot option. This can sometimes happen 10 or 20 times in a row before it will eventually turn on and function normally.
Problem 2: Random power cut off, sometimes at idle, sometimes while browsing, or using any other app. I can't pin it on any one particular function. I know it's not a temperature problem, I have temp monitors on my menu bar and as far as I can see it's been fairly stable in that regard. Most of the time, I can power up the computer again but very occasionally it will revert to what I described in problem 1.
I have run the apple hardware test, with no errors being produced, and have had the local apple reseller/service centre take a look, with their tech reporting no issues. (He referred to something called ARD being run on a cycle of 20 or 30 times with nothing indicating a problem) I've taken off every non essential piece of hardware, tried with only the stock ram - and the newer ram to no avail of my issues. The only thing that I can still suspect myself is a power issue, however there is another PC in the room that has not had any issues what-so-ever."
Needless to say I'll be soooooo disappointed if this 'top-end' machine has only got hardware to last 2.5 years. My pitifully power-less Dell has lasted longer.
    Any advice please...?

  • Mac Book Power Adapter, on MackBookPro?????

So my girlfriend is on a business trip and has a Mac Book. I have a MacBookPro. She took my power adapter by accident. I have her 60watt poweradapter. Is this fine? I am getting an X on my battery picture now instead of telling me how much time I have on my battery life. Does my MacBookPro not handle the charge?

If its powering it, and you have an X on the battery..
My guess is its powering the laptop, but not charging the battery.
Would def. bee a nice failsafe for apple, and users in cases like this.

  • Mac book power adaptor

My power adaptor will not charge my mac book while it is in use. When I shut down it will recharge the battery. This, of course limits the time I can use my computer as the battery discharges to zero while in use. Anyone have a remedy? I am not near an Apple store or service center. The computer is about 18 months old.

    Check out this program:

And inform them of the inconvenience of having to bring it in for repair.

  • Can I temporarily use the Mac Book Power Adaptor on MBP?

Hi-- I'm on vacation and forgot my adaptor. But I have access to the Mac Book one. I looked up and they have different wattages--85 vs. 60 for the Mac Book. Can I use the 60 Wattage on my MBP meant for 85?
    Thanks for you help--Elise

Yes, but you're best off using it to charge the battery and run from that. The 60w isn't enough to charge and run the machine.
    Best of luck.

  • Mac Book Start Issue

My Mac Book no longer turns on, all I get is a blue screen and a folder appears on the screen with a question mark in it. Any ideas?

Try booting from your install disk by holding the C key down. Then when you get to the screen with a menu bar open Disk Utility and use it to repair permissions.
Your hard drive may have failed. You could also boot from your install disk while holding the D key down and run diagnostics on your MacBook.

  • Hello... mac book warranty issue

    Hello,
I'm not sure whether i'm posting in the right page... hoping to get a response. I'd purchased a mac book pro 4 months ago in UAE. I reside in UAE as well. I got the 1 year international warranty with it but did not take the local warranty. My laptop has got damaged. I went to the apple care store and they told me my laptop is not under warranty. I'm assuming they are looking for a local warranty which i don't have. But my question is can they not fix my laptop under the international warranty that i have or will it only work if my laptop was damaged in any other country and had to be fixed there?
    Thank you.

I would return to the store with your warranty documentation. No one here can speak for Apple as we are users just like you.

  • Intel Based Mac Mini - Power Issues and Resetting SMS

    Hello all.
My company has 15 Mac Minis driving LCD displays. The MACs are running MS Vista Basic and operate 24 hours a day except when they reboot (in the early monring). We have a sporadic issue in that we find the Mac powered off even though we have a power backup and the display is still on. Moreover, in order to turn the Mac back on, we need to unplug the power cord from the back of the Mac and then it will turn back on. I recently uncovered that this actually resets the SMS:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=303446
My question is do these shave a firmware update for the SMS (the systems were puchased in late 2006; don't know how to get the SMS version number from Vista). If so, is there a way to update the SMS firmware with only Vista installed (Apple firmwares usuaslly use the Mac OS Updater)? Finally, what casues the SMS to malfunctino and need to be reset? Could it be the power backups not regulating the voltage to the Mac?
    Thanks fo your help,
    Kevin

    Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
Just to be clear, you're concerned about the "SMC" (System Management Controller), not "SMS", right? The subject of your topic may confuse some folks.
There was an SMC update for the "early 2006" model Mac minis (see here), but it sounds like you have the later 2006 models. What is the processor speed of the Mac minis? If they could use the update, you'll need to start them up into Mac OS X to install it. This could be done with a FireWire or USB 2.0 hard drive and would not affect the software currently installed on them.

  • Mac Book Pro Issues

    w,Hey there!
This is pretty Random, Im hoping someone can help me.
My mac is abouuutttt 3 years old... its had a good long life and up until 2 weeks ago was working perfectly.
My charger died about 2 weeks ago, I ordered one online and it arrived all good. Ever since I've plugged it back in my computer has sooooooo many issues that its never had before. First thing is its now saying the battery needs replacing. Now, i totally get that its old, i used to work in an apple store and have always been really really good about not leaving it plugged in etc so it doesn't die, before my charger broke it was getting at least 4-6 hours charge still. Now its barely making 2, and once i get to about 30% it just turns off. Not runs out of battery the computer just turns itself off. Because i can then go and turn it back on without plugging it in.
The second issue is that the date keeps going back to january 1994. It has NEVER done this before charger died, not once. Now every single time my computer turns back on i have to  try and change the date and time back to today, Which is all well and good but System Preferences doesn't seem to want to open any more either... now i figure this is something to do with the date/time being all screwy but NO IDEA how to get it to stop doing this.
The third problem is the mouse pad thingie (can't remember what its called... Trackpad?) doesn't seem to click either.
As i said i get that its an old computer, But all ways been well looked after as i used to work for mac and as i said the day the charger stopped working is when i had all these issues. Can someone please help? Thank you!

Sooo If i just get the battery replaced then all the other issues will stop. Including the time date thing?

  • Ical iphone & mac book pro issues

    Hi there,
I'm running a iPhone 4S with iOS 7.1.2 and Macbook Pro with Mavericks. I recently had to do a full restore on my phone and since then I'm having trouble syncing events between the two devices on iCal. I moved time zones recently too so that might be part of the issue. I changed the time zone to the correct one in iCloud and on my Macbook itself as well on the iPhone though for the last two I'm not sure if there are special iCal settings relating to that. I kept noticing a one hour difference between events on my phone and Mac so I experimented a bit with the time zone support category in iCal advanced settings on my Mac and on my iPhone but now it seems like if I post a new event on my Mac it simply appears as a blank new event on my phone and at the wrong time. If I post an event on my iPhone it will appear at the correct time on my Mac. I'm also noticing some of my events on my Mac stating the time zone while others are not. I scanned the forums but didn't find a solution yet so I hope these details help and that it's a quick fix. I'm not sure if I have to connect my iPhone to my Mac via USB and change some setting in iTunes. Help would be much appreciated! Thanks

I have no idea but for some reason it now seems to be fine. I didn't change anything at all so I'm not sure about the solution or what the problem was in the first place.
