Mac Book Pro 17" or Mac Pro?

Not sure which one is right for me. I am a photographer and graphic designer (print & web). I want to upgrade from my old iMac Power PC G5. Was thinking that I could get the Mac Book Pro with a separate display and use that for my retouching and InDesign files. That way I can also be mobile on photo shoots and use Capture One for tethered shooting. How can files be backed up by time machine on the MBP without an external hard drive? Is the MBP equal to the tower in capacity for hooking up external hardware such as drives or camera equipment? Is the MBP processor (2.66GHz Intel Core i7) as fast as the tower (Two 2.4GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon “Westmere” (8 cores)? Is 8MB of memory enough on the MBP? Please point out any other pros or cons for either computer to help me make a decision.
Thanks!

That would work, but there are distinct differences. Quite honestly, the MP is much more capable than the MBP for heavy duty work such as yours, but as you know, at the cost of portability.
How can files be backed up by time machine on the MBP without an external hard drive?
You could partition the internal HD, but that would not protect against several things: if the HD died, both the main partition and the TM backup are gone; if the unit is lost/stolen/damaged, same thing. It's almost putting all your eggs in one basket.
Is the MBP equal to the tower in capacity for hooking up external hardware such as drives or camera equipment?
No, the MP has more connections and bays and potential for expandability.
Is the MBP processor (2.66GHz Intel Core i7) as fast as the tower (Two 2.4GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon “Westmere” (8 cores)?
In MacTracker benchmarks, the i7 MBP benchmark is 5423, while the MP with two 2.4 Quads is 12942, so the MP is more than twice as fast.
Is 8MB of memory enough on the MBP?
Given the limitations stated above, 8GB of RAM should be sufficient.
Please point out any other pros or cons for either computer to help me make a decision.
You covered many of the salient points, but potential for expansion is a big one for some people, maybe someday adding a BR burner, adding multiple HDs, etc. I am not familiar with current MPs, but I suspect that given the huge speed advantage, it's going to handle the same tasks much, much faster without breaking a sweat, while the MBP is likely to run rather hot even while lagging far behind.
I think the big decision is speed and expansion vs portability. Good luck to you.
(Was just browsing the MP specs some more; wow, that is one serious machine!)

Adobe programs don't do well with migration. You should uninstall them, run the cleaner tool (CS Cleaner Tool for installation problems | CCM, CS6, CS5.5, CS5, CS4, CS3), and reinstall from the original installers, but you also need to be aware that many older programs are not supported on newer versions of OSX so this may not go smoothly.

  • HOW CAN I RESTORE MY ITUNES BACKUP FROM MY MAC BOOK TO MY DESKTOP MAC?

HOW CAN I RESTORE MY ITUNES IPHONE BACKUP FROM MY MAC BOOK TO MY DESKTOP MAC? THE REASON IS BECAUSE I HAVE TEXTFREE TEXT MESSAGES THAT I NEED FOR MY ATTORNEY AND WHEN I RESTORE IT FROM MY MACBOOK IT DOESNT INSTALL THE TEXTFREE BECAUSE I HAD DELETED ALL MY APPS IN ITUNES FROM IT. I HAVE ALL THE APPS ON MY DESKTOP MAC BUT I NEED TO KNOW HOW TO EXTRACT ONLY THE BACKUPS FROM THE MACBOOK AND IMPORT TO MY MAC DESKTOP. THE DESKTOP MAC IS THE ONE THAT HAS ALL OF MY LATEST BACKUPS. PLEASE SOMEONE HELP IF YOU KNOW THE ANSWER. THANKYOU

Easy. Copy it from the old Mac to the new one.
There are a variety of techniques including Setup Assistant (as soon as you get your new MacBook Air, it will ask you if you want to transfer information from another computer), Migration Assistant (if you elect to transfer information later), enabling file sharing between the two computers, or copying your music to a flash drive or other storage device followed by importing it to iTunes.
iTunes: How to move your music from one computer to another
Once your music library and everything else you want to transfer from the MacBook Pro resides on the new MBA, sync your iPod to the MBA. Sync the iPhone too when you get it, and they will both have identical iTunes music libraries.

How can I remove iCloud from my Mac Book and iPad and Mac Book Air and then just reload back on the MB Air and iPad only, which have a different user with a separate Apple ID?

You have quite muddied up the waters, I'm afraid. Assuming you now have a single GUID partition formatted Mac OS Extended, Journaled, you should try reinstalling Lion:
Reinstalling Lion/Mountain Lion Without Erasing the Drive
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the main menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion: Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.

I tried installing Iphoto it said it was downloaded successfully. I still get the error messafe, and can not open any photos of program,  any suggestions?

What version of iPhoto do you have on the Macbook and on the iMac? What systems are you running on the Macbook and on the iMac?
Does the message only refer to "a problem" or does it specify what it is?

Just purchased Mac Book,   VERY  new to Mac world,   "ouch",,  I am looking to design my own website,,  is there a program built in that will allow this,  if so,, what is it called, and where can I find it???   Thanks,

There are many ways and applications that you can use to build a web site. Which will be best for you will depend on the site you want to build and your level of expertise. Many experienced web developers just use a text editor, often one with specialized features for web programming (BBEdit, for example), but there are programs that can offer additional help, up to and including "drag and drop". Without knowing more about your needs, it's difficult to offer specific advice, but here are some possibilities:
iWeb - came with your Mac. Easy to build but rather limiting in what you can do.
RapidWeaver - more flexible and capable than iWeb but harder to use; sort of an "inbetweener" application
Dreamweaver - powerful but expensive and a steep learning curve
There are of course a number of other options. If you can provide more detail about what you wish to build and your level of experience, someone can probably make more targeted recommendations.
    Regards.

  • Need Urgent help, I have made partition hard drive in my mac book and using OS mac

Need Urgent help, I have made partition hard drive in my mac book and using OS mac & Window8 seperately... for couple of days it works great for both window & OS mac But nowadays, my pc gets restart automatically while using window & even I cant access to my Mac OS...........  I got some error in window (error80070003) ...>>>>> Now how can I format whole drive & recover my Mac book OS.without boot disk.

I can't find that model. If you open System Profiler in the Utilities folder look for the Model Identifier over in the right hand display. What do you find for the model ID? If your computer supports Internet Recovery here's what to do:
Install Mavericks, Lion/Mountain Lion Using Internet Recovery
Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.
Boot to the Internet Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND-OPTION- R keys until a globe appears on the screen. Wait patiently - 15-20 minutes - until the Recovery main menu appears.
Partition and Format the hard drive:
Select Disk Utility from the main menu and click on the Continue button.
After DU loads select your newly installed hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed. Quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion. Mavericks: Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion, Mavericks and click on the Install button. Be sure to select the correct drive to use if you have more than one.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.
This should restore the version of OS X originally pre-installed on the computer. If Mavericks is not installed, then you can reinstall it by re-downloading the Mavericks installer.
You will need to use Boot Camp Assistant in order to create a new Windows partition, then reinstall Windows.

  • How do I transfer all the information in my iTunes on my old mac book to my new mac book pro so I can sync my devices to the new machine with erasing all the data my iPhone and iPad?

I have just bought a new mac book pro and want to use this machine as the main computer to which I will sync my iPhone and iPad.
How do I transfer the information within iTunes on my old mac book so when I connect the devices the new machine will not erase all my data?
    Thank you

Copy the entire iTunes folder within the music folder on your old Mac to the music folder on your new Mac.
You can use an external hard disc for the transfer, or you can connect the computers together using Firewire Target Disc Mode as explained here:  http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1661

  • Can not delete gmail emails, why on my new Mac Book OS x 9.4  pro

Can not delete gmail emails, why, on my new Mac Book OS x 9.4

    Hi,
First I uninstalled my old HP Scan application using uninstall in the same folder as the app.
Then I installed HP Scanjet Full Feature Software and Drivers for Mac OS X v10.6 from HP support page:  http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareDownloadIndex?softwareitem=sj-78355-5 &cc=us&dlc=en&lc=en&os=219&product=3236366&sw_lang=
Then I was able to make single scans using Image Capture.
    Does it help?

  • Mac book too old for mac store so how do i upgrade to osx lion?

hi guys i have just aquired a mac book pro and my soft ware is too old to even have the mac store so how else do i buy download and install the new operating system osx lion?

Head to the Apple menu > About this Mac > More information and give us the model identifier.
It looks like this "MacBookPro 4,1" also the RAM amount and your OS X version (like OS X 10.4 or 10.5)
From that information we can give you a idea of what or what not to do.
Except in the case of a Mac Pro tower, any Mac with 10.4 or 10.5 is typically too old to run the latest operating systems of 10.7 or 10.8 well, and since 10.9 is coming soon as well to deny even more older machines a OS X upgrade.
However OS X 10.6 is still getting them as 25% of Mac users is on it (not Safari or Java 6, use Firefox instead), so it's possible you may be able to upgrade to that and it allows you to still use the software on the machine, unlike 10.7 or later which won't use the older PPC binaries.
OS X 10.4/10.5 need to upgrade, 10.6.8 ok still

  • How do I install Creative Suite on my new Mac Book when my old Mac Book is broken and disc has been misplaced?

My old Mac Book is broken and no longer turns on. A couple of years ago I bought the Creative Suite from Apple and would like to transfer this to my new Mac Book. However, to make things more complicated I seem to have misplaced my disc. How do you suggest I can transfer the Creative Suite to my new Mac?
    Many Thanks,
    Jess

You would not want to transfer it even if you could.  Transferring doesn't work in most cases.  You need to install using installation files.  You can download those files (can only provide a general link since you didn't indicate the version)...
    Download and Installation Help -
    https://helpx.adobe.com/download-install.html
You will need your serial number to activate, which is normally on the disc case.  If you registered the software when you originally installed it then you might be able to find it recorded in your Adobe account online in the My Products section.

  • Unmute mac book air?, Unmute mac book air?

My mac book air is stuck on mute. I cannot unmute it. No audio device could be found any more. I checked the earphone socket and cleaned it. There is no red light from ear phone socket. I restored the lion program to factory default and recovered it thought Internet. I also reset NVRAM / PRAM. No one helped.

Hopefully one of these steps should solve the problem.
    1. System Preference > Sound > Output > Internal Speakers
        Highlight  Internal Speakers / Headphones
Make sure that Mute is not enabled.
    2. Reset SMC.     http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
        Choose the method for:
"Resetting SMC on portables with a battery you should not remove on your own".
    3. Applications > Utilities > Audio MIDI Setup
        Audio Devices window
        Side Bar
        Click the Built-in Output.
Under Mute any of the boxes checked? If so, uncheck it.

  • Do you suggest a mac book air or a mac book pro for the college? bound student?

I'm going to be freshman in college in august and my HP lameness just died, and i want to buy a mac cause i love my moms. i went into the apple store thinking of going for the Air because im going to be commuting on my bike to class and the air is just so portable its hard to resist. I need a reliable model that i can do my itunes on, write papers, possible occasional powerpoint presentations, and a strong battery would be nice. The rep at the store told me within 5 minutes of explaining my situation that i should go with the pro. then told me all about this lightning bolt thing he was all pumped about, it didnt mean anything to me really. im not going to be downloading crazy amounts of data.
---so the two are close in price and i just wanted some input. anything would be great thanks.

First off, you need to wait and see, because there seems a likelihood of new Airs arriving. if they do arrive soon, there is a likelihood that they will have Thunderbolt, which blows the rep's recommendation right out of the water if Thunderbolt was the only reason he had for recommending Pro over Air.
Second, I disagree with both the rep and Allen. The 13" Air gives you up to 10 hours of battery life, that's more than any of the Pros, while the 11" gets up to 5 sometimes 6 hours which is nearly as much as a Pro. Both Airs come with SSD so riding on your bike won't cause any problem (you know how you're always told to wait till the disk stops spinning on laptops before packing them up? No spinning Disk with SSD. Much better for bike travel). Certainly if I were going to school with a pack on my back I'd want the lightest, slimmest machine I could get and that's the Air. More room for books, less weight on the shoulders or tossing you off balance around corners, etc.
Last, for what you're doing, I don't see any reason why the Air can't suit your needs. The only reason for wanting a Pro instead is:
    (1) If you need a CD/DVD drive
    (2) If you have a lot of movies/games and so need a large hard drive. How many gigs of disk space have you filled up? Music, photos, documents now take up very little--people forget that. It's movies and games and certain programs that still hog disk space. If all you've got comes to half-to-two-thirds of the Air's total hard drive (whichever one you're going for), you'll be fine.
    (3) If you're planning on going into a field, or studying in a field that requires a powerful computer with a large hard drive.
Otherwise, you don't need a Pro. You may not even need a 13" depending on how many gigs of hard drive you require--but don't go for the 11" until you've check it and the 13" both out in a store. Some people don't like the small screen.
Don't let anyone scare you into buying bigger machine than you need. With clouds, internet mail, and external disk drives, a large hard drive is becoming much less important. And the power of the latest Airs is more than equal to doing all you say you want to do on them unless, as said, you are going into certain fields that require laptop powerhouses. The only real drawback is that you can't upgrade, so don't skimp on what you buy. That would, IMHO, be the only reason to pick Pro over Air given your needs--that if you want to upgrade to more RAM or a bigger HD in two years you won't be able to with an Air, what you buy is what you have for the life of the machine. But if you get the latest and newest, that will probably be just fine for your college years given what you say you'll be doing with it.
And don't forget, you'll get a student discount.

  • Clone Mac Book hard drive onto Mac Mini

    Hi All,
I own a 2009 MacBook Pro and have very recently bought a Mac Mini.
I would like to clone the MacBook Pro's hard drive onto the Mac Mini, so that, when switching it on, the Mini is an exact replicate of the MacBook Pro, including all content, software and other bits.
I own an external hard drive that is large enough to contain all of the MacBook Pro's data.
Could someone help me in describing the detailed procedure for me to clone the drive as desired?
    Thank you.

Unfortunately, this will not work as you won't be able to boot the Mini because Macs cannot boot from an OS version older than what they came with (I assume the Mini is running Mountain Lion or mavericks?). You can, however, transfer your files, etc.
FWIW, please update your profile: you are not running iOS on the Mini as iOS is for iDevices, not computers.
