Is it possible to use an interface somehow to wire up an xbox or freeview box or other av equpment, so basically using the laptop as a portable tv/ screen?

Apple will gladly sell you a color coordinated and texture matching external SuperDrive to go with your Retina'ized MBP for about $80 bucks.
Note that those models are completely sealed with no serviceable or upgradeable parts inside. So if you decide to bite the bullet, be sure to customize its guts to your heart's content from the get-go as no further change will be possible. This means CPU speed, amount of RAM and size of the solid state drive. Other external options, like the Superdrive, can be added later.

8 GB RAM will be sufficient for photo editing. The 15" display would be superior in both size and resolution when compared to the 13". The best approach is to test both in an Apple store.

If you need to run Appleworks 6 to export some data (for example a database, which cannot be opened by any other program):
a) If your Mac will still boot into Snow Leopard, partition your hard drive (or add an external hard drive) and install Snow Leopard (and the optional Rosetta) into it and use the "dual-boot" method to boot into Snow Leopard and run Appleworks 6; or
b) Install Snow Leopard Server into Parallels and run Appleworks 6 concurrently with Lion, Mt. Lion and Mavericks:

Try using OpenDNS servers:
System Preferences>Network>Advanced>DNS.
Click on the + in the left side column and add the following:
208.67.222.222
208.67.220.220
Click OK, then click Apply
BTW one post is sufficient. Two clogs the servers.

Purchased Mac Book Pro 2.7 GHz, 16GB RAM (upgrade), 512 FLASH (upgrade) 14 days ago - but new MAC Book Pro announce today (10/22). Did I Overpay? Any discounts or reimbursements for non-needed upgrades?

I recently (14 days ago) purchased a Mac Book Pro 15.4 and increased the processor to 2.7 Quad Core Intel Core i7, increased memeoty to 16 GB 1600MHz DDR3l SDRAM, increased the storage to 512 Flash Storage. Today (10/22) an New Mac Book Pro was announce and release for purchase. This new laptop has 16 GB RAM and 512 Storage as defualt options without having to pay a premium.
After contacting the customer service I was presented with two options - since the customer service representatives/ supervisors/ leads could not locate the price differences they could not tell me how much the credit should actually have been.
1. Return the computer, have the monies returned to me and repurchase a laptop with the new standars (aproxx 2 -3 week process).
2. Take a $150.00 credit
I can say that the memory was probably $200.00 and the storage was probably $300.00.
Is there a way to get the full refund for hardware configurations that are now default?
If I had waited another 2 weeks I could have save some money and get a better video card and processor. The release of the New Mac Book Pro was not a known/ planned event.
Can you help Apple?

You have also posted in the Mac Pro forum and not the MacBook forum. You may find many other similar experiences there. For future reference it's worth noting forthcoming upcoming Apple events and checking out some of the Apple related websites. You will then be able to make an educated guess re what is about to be updated and what is likely to remain the same. It's now a good time to buy an iPhone and all those recently updated MacBook Pro and iPad models. Less good time to buy iMacs.More detailed info here.

Internal camera no longer working on multiple Mac Book Pros after updating to 10.8.5. with third party software. (Smart Board, Bridgit ) Camera does work with Skype.

I have several Mac Book Pros that I am responsible for. They will no longer recognize the camera in SmartBoard and in Smart Bridgit since updating to 10.8.5. One of the machines is even running 10.9 and it still won't work. I have teachers who are very frustrated because they wish to use the Bridgit Software in their classrooms. Skype appears to be working fine. It is just the Smart Board Software.

It sounds like you need help troubleshooting the built in camera on some of the computers there. I want to recommend the troubleshooting steps outlined in this article named:

Built-in iSight cameras
These steps are for iSight cameras that are built into a computer, such as the iMac G5 (iSight) or later, the MacBook, or MacBook Pro.
See if the issue is application-specific.
Try another application (iSight works with applications like iChat, PhotoBooth, and iMovie HD 6) to see if the iSight camera exhibits the same behavior in all applications. If it only happens in one application, try reinstalling that application.
See if the issue is user-specific.
Test your iSight camera in another user account. If the issue only occurs in one user, the issue would be isolated to user settings.
Find out if the computer recognizes the iSight
Check System Profiler (in the Utilities folder, inside the Applications folder). Under the USB header, check to see if the iSight camera is detected.
Reset SMC or PMU
Reset your computer's SMC or PMU, and then check System Profiler again. (SMC reset instructions for iMac G5 (iSight), Intel-based iMacs; PMU reset instructions for MacBook and MacBook Pro.)

I am thinking about buying a mac book pro for college this year, but as i have never owned a mac I have a few questions. I play game's on my laptop from time to time, Starcraft II, Diablo 3, Lol, games like that. If I bought the mac book pro 13in, 2.5 GHz for example, what kind of performance should I except? Also, is it possible to upgrade the hard drive/ RAM memory myself? or can I only upgrade when I buy it?

Those games - while playable in the Macbook PRO 13 inch, will cause your Macbook to heat up quite a bit since the processor had to work hard to drive the built in graphics.........
Yes, you can do your own RAM and Hard Drive upgrade.....
Maximum RAM you can install is 16GB DDR3 1600MHz...
If you want your Macbook to perform well playing those games - with the RAM and SSD upgrade...

Mac Book Pro with 2 or 4 core?

I use Lightroom a lot and am looking at getting a new Mac Book Pro to speed things up and to replace my Mac Book (I need a laptop for location tethered shooting)
Will I see a big difference between a 2 or 4 core model, or is the processor speed more importand? I've also read on another Adobe Forum that Hyperthreading is not fully implemented on LR 4.2.
Does anyone have recommendations for a Mac Book Pro model; preferably a 13" (for size/ location) unless you think the dual core will be too slow?

Multithreading in Lightroom is not as efficient as it could be so you are unlikely to see a 2x speed increase from going from 2 to 4 cores. Probably more like 1.4x or so depending on what you are doing so it is possible that higher clock rate will make up for fewer cores. I have a 4 core i7 Mac Book Pro retina and it is very fast in Lightroom but I have no frame of reference to compare to a dual core with the same level of processor. The retina display is gorgeous with Lightroom even though retina is not fully supported yet by Lightroom (in the Library module you get partial retina support), so I would recommend that machine in 13" if you have the cash especially since Adobe has already promised support in LR 4.

Mac Book Pro switches off when you open Safari!

Hi people.
I am new Mac Book Pro user, have had it for a few months now and all is good, however I have an issue and that is that everytime I open safari and open a new tab the machine switches off! To turn it back on I need to wait for 30 seconds or so and then power it on. An error report is shown upon login and it happens again when safari opens.
Any ideas??
